my story will be told when i am gone (cause you and i have brought about the start of a new dawn)

Chapter 2: Song #1 - Chasing The Unknown

Chapter Text

The following is an excerpt from Simon's lyric journal. Viewer discretion is advised.

*****************

Every Hole’s A Goal (that is a terrible joke and you should be ashamed)

Chasing The Unknown

The grass is always greener on the other side

Tries to keep you away with that pesticide (what the fuck am i a farmer-) (interesting rhyme though) (pesticide, less to hide, something mine...)

'Til you realize the folks there have got more to hide (FOLKS?? i'm going country, god help us all)

'Til you realize that... something something colorblind (...maybe) (i'm not even colorblind) (is this cultural appropriation)

THE ME AND ADIL SONG:

If you are the Earth

Then I am the sun

'Cause you're always orbiting you orbit endlessly

And all I do is ____

(run? the sun doesn’t move, you idiot)

(IT'S A SONG IT DOESN'T HAVE TO MAKE SENSE)

(why am i arguing with myself)

THE LOBOTOMY SONG:

Conversations with myself

Goddamn, both of us need help

I'm going slowly insane

Can I live with half a brain

(note: check if the sun moves)

(the earth is definitely the one that rotates, right?)

(shit dude i was in honors earth and space science how do i not remember this–)

(gailleo would be so ashamed)

(note: check spelling of galilleo) (galleleo?)

(GALILEO) (FUCK)

THE GALILEO SONG:

If everyone believes something

Does that make it true?

But everyone is no one

Compared to me and you

(“everyone is no one?” the fuck is this) ("if everyone believes something" blah blah blah- if a tree falls in a forest, is simon a shitty songwriter?)

THE ACTUALLY WORKING ON THE THING I'M SUPPOSED TO WORK ON SONG:

I dig and dig until my legs give in

Always chasing the next big sin

Dig and dig until my legs give out

something something it will amount? (but to nothing it will amount? maybe?)

endless ___ and endless drought

Chasing the gold rush in your eyes (cliché)

Bitterly choking back my demise Racing the clock just to check the time

Following you through the depths of night

Only to find out... something something light??

(following a light that goes out the minute you touch it. like the great gatsby. the green light represented the american dream or something, right?)

(FUCK AMERICA)

(or wait- was it god watching and refusing to intervene??) (it's been too long since english class)

(i only read the sparknotes summary anyway)

If god God  a god  my god is watching, out of spite

I'll kick dirt over his His her their Their green light

(capitalization. yes? no?) (do i want to be disrespectful) (who am i kidding i'm always disrespectful)

(is the narrator of this song pious)

(uncaring god: He/Him)

The light burns my eyes

Emerald sunshine

The light burns your eyes

Reflected in mine

(green eyes = jealousy?)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

(imagine if i went on genius) (imagine fans searching for meaning in these lyrics, like “oo there’s 31 a’s in here, and there were 31 deaths at the fucking… insert mass shooting here)

(did i seriously count the number of a’s just to make that joke) (that no one will ever read) (i suck)

(note: find out if calypso can metal scream.)

word cloud - sin, green, sun, earth, light, night, bright, uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh

word cloud - fuck, i hate this, why do i do this, i hate myself  i am worthy of love and respect, ARE YOU HAPPY IMAGINARY THERAPIST WHO SOUNDS SUSPICIOUSLY LIKE CALYPSO

sisyphus

journey not the destination - journey is all i've known

don't stop believing (that's already a song you idiot) (a journey song, no less) (journey makes no goddamn sense, why is there a midnight train that goes anywhere, is the train some kind of liminal space)

THE WHO FUCKING CARES SONG:

Liminal space, liminal space

Get out of my liminal face

(is it 3AM or am i on to something here)

digging own grave??

(you have to actually incorporate the title of the song in there you know) (what rhymes with unknown) (home, alone, moan, groan, stone)

(is this even abt the hole guys anymore)

(is this anything)

An excerpt from Simon's lyric journal, after a few more pages of incoherent babbling:

DRAFT 1 (CHASING THE UNKNOWN):

VERSE:

You were the earth that I tossed aside

And I was the sun you were trying to hide

I burn down your walls to watch what you've become

Standing my ground ‘til the ground starts to run

'Cause I am slowly, sloping, lower

Stopping to rest in Sisyphus' boulder

This journey's my home, destination to blame

This hole is my home and this hole is my grave

PRE-CHORUS:

I dig and dig until my legs give in

Always chasing the next big sin

You dig and dig until your legs give out

Drowning in sweat just to survive the drought

CHORUS:

And you’re always in motion

My gaze burns your eyes

An emerald sunrise

And I’m always imploding

Waiting for my demise

But each night in my dreams

I'm chasing that green light

And each time that I fall, it

Blinks a little more bright

VERSE:

The sun was pretty set in its ways

Until the tide rose high to sweep it away

The Earth has never worked alone

To spin me out of my comfort zone

The moon is calm and cold like ice

Monochrome in her pearly eyes

So if God is watching, out of spite

I’ll kick dirt over His green light

PRE-CHORUS:

You dig and dig until your legs give in

Always chasing the next big sin

I dig and dig until my legs give out

Drowning in blood just to survive the drought

CHORUS:

And you’re always imploding

Your gaze burns my eyes

Reflected in mine

And I’m always in motion

Running from the tide

But each day when I wake

I'm chasing that green light

And each time that I reach, it

Blinks a little less bright

BRIDGE:

So why am I running

Why does the ground shift

Why am I humming

A tune to the abyss

Why am I dying

As green light fades into my bones

Why does the sky shift

Sun and moon to earth and stone

And why'd I decide to go chasing the unknown

CHORUS:

And we're always eroding

The green fades to gray

The night into-

The world ends in slow-motion

Oceans into lakes

And I'll never wake, but

I'm chasing that green light

And those down below, will

Know I put up a fight

BRIDGE:

Yes I'd die for my sins

But I am not alone

My eyes fluttering

Shut, 'til I softly implode

Yes we died for our sins

Together in our homes

The destination

Was right under my nose

And the darkness can read it

Carved on my headstone

"Yes he died for the sin, of chasing the unknown"

(aaaand in the cold light of day, the verdict iiiiiiiiiis... *drumroll*)

(i hate this. burn it BURN IT)

(okay constructive criticism: the bridge is clunky. the words 'light' and 'bright' are overused. it sucks.)

(that last one wasn't very constructive, huh)

(like imagine me showing this to the band) (they'd ask what it meant and shit) (i can't deal with that)

(i should just tear it out and forget it ever existed.)

An excerpt from Simon's lyric journal.

*****************

(maybe i'll show it to calypso. just to see. y'know.)

(if it's anything.)

(probably not.)

(...maybe.)

Notes:

A little glimpse into Simon's (and let's be real, my own) songwriting process!!

Right now, my plan is to have a song every other chapter- each written by a different member of the band, of course. Maybe someday we'll get to see them performed, but right now I'm just flying by the seat of my pants tbh :p

In the next chapter: Calypso and Marly's piano lesson. Hope you enjoy!!
