Life is tough in Greater LA. The sun will burn your skin off, anyone who doesn't live on the top levels has to scavenge and make do with synthetic substitutes, and the rich live in the lap of luxury above it all. Kate has scratched out a life down below, where she repairs and rebuilds any synthetic who might need a hand. One day she finds the still functioning remains of a very damaged and extremely expensive android, and repairing her will change Kate's life forever.
