Watson's entries/narration here are lovely in their melancholy, and the images he sees and recounts -- first in writing, then aloud -- are incredibly evocative. i love the quietly fantastical quality sustained throughout the descriptions of Watson's visions, Holmes's music, the performance of Antony and Cleopatra, the places they're traveling toward and why -- all these elements are woven together in such a poetic and satisfying way.
the contrast drawn between Watson's past characterization of Holmes in The Sign of Four (the untouchable presence before his overawed self) and his current, real understanding of him (a man who deeply hurt his closest friend, who in his years alone composed a melody to call him home, who treats him with such conscious tenderness -- a man of infinite variety and infinite capacity) is particularly affecting. the two of them are so fragile and careful in how they move within Baker Street, how they share their lives now, in the aftermath; this fraught but tentatively hopeful stage of their mutual convalescence is beautifully written.
