Work Text:
If anything, Yuuichirou wondered what in him made him trust Shinoa and Co.
Guren and Mahiru said they needed people who can work for them in the summer. They didn't mention it would be easy - but they would make cash.
Kimizuki and Yoichi were on board. The last month before their semester ended Shinoa successfully convinced Mitsuba and Shuusaku.
Yuuichirou knew that his father took the role of a director and supervisor of some summer camp for quite a couple years but Yuuichirou always turned him down with a fuck no because he had better things to do and better ways to spend his summer.
That exactly changed when all his friends decided taking the job couldn't hurt.
Moon Demon Camp was a small, family campus. Yuuichirou is sure they were desperate considering the chances of being automatically hired had no odds whatsoever due to connections and reference, which were torture.
The Amane-Ichinose’s and Hiiragi’s practically slobber their name all over and make it pretty damn obvious that they own it.
Narumi was just as unenthusiastic as Yuuichirou was, but as soon as he heard Shuusaku was going?
“I heard the pay’s pretty worth it and everyone’s gonna be there so I'm in.”
Everyone. Yuuichirou wanted to laugh. Such bullshit. But here he was, his second year as a counselor.
That was then.
Yuuichirou thought he would absolutely hate it. Considering Guren teased he wouldn't last more than a day and everyone tormentingly agreed.
They were wrong, however. And a year in Yuuichirou could describe his job as not bad.
He had the others as counselors to work with. They did somewhat have enough, but there was still room for more.
That's why Yuuichirou perked up in curiosity when Shinya mentioned that there may be new counselors coming in this year.
Mahiru and Guren were automatically on board. Speaking with the other supervisors, Sayuri and Goshi were more than ecstatic. The look of dread washed over Mito and Shigure’s faces.
“We already have enough.” Mito groaned. “Are you sure Kureto would even allow this?”
“Already talked to him about it.” Shinya waved it off. It’s remarkable Shinya was merely a connection to the Hiiragi family from Guren however he’s managed to get on their good side with charming smiles and polite mannerisms.
“What could be the hurt in hiring another counselor?” Mahiru convinced, “Before we had to drop to our knees to suck dick to drag people into working for us and now we have one of the best campuses in the joint.”
“The more the merrier.” Guren added.
“Wait.” Yuuichirou butted in, “Is this person also a connection or-”
“Mahiru and I were talking and we thought it would be nice if new counselors weren't family or friend exclusive to welcome some variety. Not that you guys aren't wonderful but irritable counselors, it would be nice for the kids to see a new face around here and not someone ugly.”
That was hurtful - though it was all settled after that. A new counselor was coming to Moon Demon.
They were scheduled to arrive during orientation a couple weeks later.
Every year the board organizes a scavenger hunt where all the campuses in the area come together to Moon Demon to sit together and play a few games.
They were hell - and Yuuichirou hated them because they were done annually and if you lost, well, you lost, and better luck next time. Absolutely no second chances.
“Mahiru says they do something new every year but our camp’s never won a single scavenger hunt.” Shinoa mentions, “That was back then when they had to jerk people off for more counselors.”
“Whatever it is,” Kimizuki mumbled, “We better win this time, we missed out on money and gift cards.”
“There are tons of easier ways to earn them.” Yoichi said sheepishly, “It’s okay if we don't win.”
“I want those gift cards so we better win.” Narumi countered.
The gymnasium was crowded at this particular time. Guren, Shinya, and Mahiru were happy to see them.
Guren was surprised that none of them quit a second year in. But that was good. A larger staff held more opportunities with recognition.
Seated by name of campus, the staff settled inside and gathered around.
“This is gonna be a load of baloney.” Mitsuba mumbled. Shinoa told her to lighten up, Yuuichirou chuckling. He rather somewhat enjoyed these to an extent.
He’s looking around from where he was seated only to catch a glimpse of somewhere new at their campus.
Golden locks that fell down to his neck. Eyes bright and blue as the ocean, a porcelain and slim figure. Gaze wandering aimlessly, almost as if he appeared helpless.
Yuuichirou couldn't take his eyes off the other.
He chatted a bit with Shinya before Shinya turned his heel to speak with the supervisors.
Yuuichirou sat up slowly, taking a deep breath before making his way over to the blond sitting cross-legged next to him.
“Hey.” Yuuichirou said smoothly, when those eyes met his own, they glimmered with slight bewilderment.
“Hi.”
“First year here?”
“Yeah, and I'm kinda nervous.” The blond laughs, and even if it was quite short - it was the most beautiful thing Yuuichirou has heard.
“Are you the new counselor?” Yuuichirou asked, “Because something is telling me that you might be my boss and I highly fear that.”
“Oh, no!” The blond shakes his head, curls that bounced and shifted. “I'm a counselor, only recently hired by Shinya.”
“Oh thank God.” Yuuichirou sighed. “We were told earlier that we were gonna have a new face and I was kinda hoping it was a counselor or they're not convinced to give you a higher position.”
“Don't worry, I'm not capable.” The blond jested. Yuuichirou chortled.
“What’s your name?” He asked.
The blond leaned in and frowned. “What?” He asked, barely they could hear each other when close because of the noise of all the campuses making chatter with their staff members.
“I asked,” Yuuichirou repeated, “What's your name?”
“Mikaela!” The blond exclaims, saying clearly in Yuuichirou’s ear.
“Mikaela.” Yuuichirou said back to him. “That's a pretty name.” He complimented.
Mikaela nods, his cheeks flushing slightly. “Thank you!”
“I’m Yuuichirou.” Yuuichirou raised his voice so Mikaela could hear. “I'm also a counselor, and most of the people sitting with me are my friends and family.”
“That’s nice.” Mikaela observed his surroundings, “Nice to meet you too!”
Yuuichirou wished to say more, but the host had appeared at the center of the gym. The host happening to be a director of a different campus.
The announcements weren't any different than the year before. An introduction and an explanation of what’s going on and why they’re all here.
The focal point of this all was to represent their campus. Points were earned by how many times a camp staff has won each game and in the end the winner earns a grand prize. However, prizes were earned throughout.
When the scavenger hunt began, the camps were told to huddle up within their campus.
“Okay.” Mahiru clapped her hands. “You guys know the drill. If you possess anything they ask for you have to run up to the middle of the gym and show them.”
“You gotta open your wallets, your purses, man-purses, backpacks, I don't care.” Guren advised, “Something’s gonna be opened either way so you might as well be prepared.”
“But if it's not something that you've put inside anywhere and if it's perhaps a clothing or accessory you're currently wearing please take it off.” Sayuri reminded.
“We have to take off whatever we have on?” Mikaela leaned in to ask Yuuichirou.
Yuuichirou shrugged. “If we’re gonna win we have to play hard. Those are the rules. Anything goes as long as it isn't too vulgar.”
“Don't worry, it highly depends.” Shinya intervened, winking.
The host, Crowley Eusford, announced the first quest.
As soon as all camps were actively listening he mentioned black and white sneakers.
Yuuichirou was wearing black sneakers, so he couldn't offer then up. Mahiru coaxed everyone to check their sneakers.
Yoichi’s eyes fall on Mikaela’s sneakers in the midst of the frenzied checking, Mikaela probably unaware that he was wearing the right sneakers.
“Look!” Yoichi shouted, “He’s wearing black and white!”
“What?” Before Mikaela can speak Shinoa casually grabbed his foot and looked at his shoe.
“MAHIRU! HE’S WEARING IT!”
He was told to get up there by everyone.
Mikaela turned to Yuuichirou, “Should I?” He appeared faze by the whole ordeal and all the pressure.
“Go!” Yuuichirou urged.
“Oh God.” Mikaela panicked, he untied his shoelaces and removed them completely. Narumi helped Mikaela up, Mikaela sprinting the minute Shinya pointed to the direction of Crowley where the other camp staff stood. Some having already beat them to it.
Moon Demon cheered for Mikaela, taking the points for that certain quest.
Yuuichirou’s aware of how ridiculous these quests were. As the next ones were told people would be up there with a single shoe on, the boys were even told to take off their shirts if it had something that matched what the quest was asking for. The quests were odd alright, but entertaining to watch everyone dig through for whatever suitable.
They made it in third place, after was followed by a series of games to determine the final winner.
It consisted of piggyback rides, the first thing Yuuichirou learned about Mikaela was that he was practically a feather on his back.
Though it came to bite them in the ass when they had to switch, Mikaela surprisingly made it halfway through before he accidentally stumbled causing the both of them to fall.
Despite that embarrassing moment, the other games had Moon Demon rather successful.
If it weren't for the girls’ half-assed attempts they wouldn't have been dropped to fourth place. As Shinoa claimed that she wasn't capable of a fast crab walk, neither was Yayoi, the only ones that had tried their best were Rika and Mitsuba. Thankfully during the races Shinoa could sprint fast and everyone counted on her to bring up their place in terms of victory.
Mikaela was also surprisingly good, often talking with Yuuichirou and both conspiring whatever plan that would help them get in the lead.
In the end, the final round of games were enough to help their camp catch up, bringing them forward to second place.
Again, they didn't win. Which was a load of bullshit.
Shuusaku said last year they made it into third place. Now it was second, so it was improvement.
Though everyone still sulked.
Better luck next time. They always say. At least the thought of knowing that everyone worked their asses off counts.
The rest of orientation was spent in a class organized by campus explaining more about their position.
Yuuichirou would've liked to speak with Mikaela, though he was dragged away by Narumi and Kimizuki, Mikaela wasn't exactly comfortable with the other counselors so he remained secluded. But for sure, he was friendly despite appearing reserved and seemed very sweet.
Mahiru congratulated everyone’s efforts. Groans filling the room when Guren calmly stated that everyone’s gonna have to come back next week to set up around campus.
Yuuichirou dreaded that the most. He already had to pack for he was staying in the cabins with the counselors however usually, having to haul shit around took a good two entire days.
Regardless, he does it anyway. Shinya promised that they'll be paid extra for the hard work.
It was until they arrived again next week when Yuuichirou saw Mikaela again.
There was also a new face, the others registering that they haven't seen them before either.
They gathered at the gym in a circle, Mahiru entering with Mikaela, one with graying hair and another a darker shade than Shinoa’s, and a brunette he failed to recognize.
“Everyone this is Mikaela, you may have seen him at orientation. He will be the activity counselor just like the rest of you and the dance coordinator along with Shinoa. And this is Akane, she's in charge of the art room and will be paired with one of you once we get to sorting out the divisions. These are Lacus and Rene and we’ll be figuring out where they’ll be assigned in a later time.” She explained.
In a family friend environment Shinya says it's important that no one is left out. Granting Mikaela, Lacus, Rene, and Akane a warm welcome.
Akane and the others aside from Mikaela weren’t able to make it to orientation - but thankfully, they was just as friendly as Mikaela was. Well, Rene was strangely quiet but calm and collected… however the four of them having seemed to know each other fairly well. Perhaps another well-known set of connections to work here on Mikaela’s behalf.
“Feel free to show them around and fill them in on the basics.” Guren stated dully. “The trucks are here, everyone needs to grab something, unbox them, and put them where they should be. We don't have much time to sit around and chat so if the new counselors need any tours while we’re at it be our guest.”
Shinoa, Mitsuba, and the other girls stole Akane the moment the group dispersed. Shuusaku offered to show Lacus and Rene around.
Mikaela seemed to be okay with it, Narumi, and Kimizuki simply shrugged and got to work, Narumi patted Yuuichirou’s shoulder and said, “He’s all yours,” - deciding that they’d follow Shuusaku with the other boys. Leaving Yuuichirou in the gym with Mikaela.
Yuuichirou shoved him away and exhales. Mikaela was alone now that everyone headed outside for the big trucks with their logo plastered on the back. Mahiru ordered a shit ton of supplies that needed be arranged before the day of camp begins so everyone had acquired what they needed.
He bravely walked up to Mikaela, donned in drawstring shorts and a collared shirt tied up at the waist due to the blistering heat outside that added to the torture of this early morning.
Mikaela’s eyes shined when he spotted Yuuichirou. “Hey, you!”
“Hey!” Yuuichirou grinned, he nods. “What’s up?”
“Very, very lost.” Mikaela brushed his bangs to the side. “Would you mind it if I stick with you? I would ask Mahiru or Shinya but they're all busy and I wouldn't want to bother them at the moment.”
“Don't be intimidated by any of ‘em.” Yuuichirou motioned for Mikaela to come with him, finding it adorable how Mikaela rushed quickly to walk by Yuuichirou’s side. “I'll gladly be your tour guide and all but you can ask anyone anything. They're all nice people, they just don't tolerate nonsense which we all do a whole lot. As long as you do the right things they'll be nice to you, especially my dad though it's hard to believe.”
“Guren’s your dad…?” Mikaela asked.
Yuuichirou sighed exasperatedly. “Well technically my parents are my bosses, Mahiru’s his girlfriend and also Shinya is their boyfriend so you get what we mean when we say family environment.”
“I think I see the resemblance.”
“No you don't.” Yuuichirou groaned. Mikaela giggled.
“Everyone says that we look alike and no one understands I don't want to look anything fucking like him.”
“But he's your dad.”
“I'm not gonna get started with that shit.” Yuuichirou said quietly, “So I’ll show you around?”
Mikaela’s still smiling. “Yes of course.”
On campus, he told Mikaela where the classrooms, art room included were. Where the staff came to carry in desks and chairs. That was where the campers were stay in briefly during the day.
There was the gym, where activities were spent indoors - the mess hall where only the campers had their lunch. However, all counselors had their breaks in the staff room down the hall, it was much smaller and breaks were assigned at a schedule time for half an hour.
Downstairs was the arcade, a fairly medium sized room with consoles and board games. The other rooms in the basement were space left for dance activities.
“This is where you and Shinoa will be.” Yuuichirou presents, “It kinda smells like shit considering it's the basement and it's empty because we haven't brought anything in here yet, but bring in some Lysol when you move into the cabins and you’ll manage. Shinoa does it.”
“What about speakers and music?” Mikaela laughs shortly, looking around.
“They should be left in the storage, Goshi should handle that if you need any equipment.”
“And Shinoa?”
They left the room, making their way back outside.
“What about her?”
“I'm new here and I wouldn't want her to hate me since we have to spend a whole summer working together…” Mikaela says timidly.
“Don't worry about Shinoa either.” Yuuichirou snorted. “She’s gonna love you. She's hyper and she might do… certain things but, she’s tolerable. You should be able to keep her in check.”
Yuuichirou skimmed through the rules, as those are common sense and self-explanatory. Guren and Mahiru would have someone’s head and balls snatched from them if they do anything vulgar or inappropriate in front of the children, with the children, (said things made Mikaela grimace considering they were very odd) or engage in said activities while they're on campus grounds.
Yuuichirou says that they still camp out when the kids are asleep to have a beer or two and other things, but as long as they don't get caught - a little can't hurt in breaking the rules.
Everyone is asleep anyway, so anything goes.
“Oh yeah and, horror stories aren't allowed.”
“You can't be serious.”
“For the safety of children we can only play games and sing songs around the campfire if we go camping or hiking.”
“Sounds ludicrous.”
“Right?” Yuuichirou rolled his eyes. The trek to the cabins was several minutes of a walk, to the dock where swimming and kayaking activities lied, then the field - before heading back into campus.
“Lemme tell you something fucking awesome.” Yuuichirou said. “The best way to get out of duties is working at the front desk. Everyone’s in and out most of the day and if you offer to help any visitors that drop in it's considered a good break from all shit we have to endure for a whole day.”
“You guys are such rebels aren't you?” Mikaela jested, “How long have you been working here for?”
“A year, but it's pretty amazing how I know all these things.”
Mikaela chuckles. “Thanks for the advice.” He joked.
Narumi found them later on telling them that Guren needed them both at the truck. That was where Goshi and Mito were inside the back lifting supplies out of the truck for the staff to carry.
Yuuichirou ignored the smug look on Narumi’s face when Yuuichirou lead Mikaela to the truck.
Anything that was too heavy Yuuichirou immediately opted to carry for Mikaela - due to the first time Mikaela tried to carry a fairly large microwave for the staff room he nearly dropped it on his foot.
“I’m really sorry!”
“No, it’s okay.” Yuuichirou breathed. Mikaela opened the door to the staff room, the two of them entered to place the microwave on the counter.
“These are where snacks and a coffee machine’s gonna be kept. Also, we’ll have to bring a mini fridge in here which will be fuckin’ hell to carry.”
“How long does this all take exactly?” Mikaela folded his arms. Yuuichirou brushed his hair back, needing his clammy forehead to cool down.
“Hopefully Mahiru has things in control so we aren’t missin’ any shit and Guren having to drag us here for a second day of set up.”
Usually, Shinya assures everyone the faster they get things done then they can be finished by today. With the amount of supplies loaded in the truck, they were going to here all day it seems.
A few hours have passed by before they were finished, barely anything left from what was taken from the trucks.
But it didn’t help the exhaustion that overcame everyone. Surely, the increase in staff for the past year and a half was pleasant - because now more work can get done.
Guren never liked it when someone started to complain, because they’d have to withstand a long lecture about how Mahiru and Shinya had to do most of the work back where there wasn’t many of them.
Yuuichirou’s about done with Guren’s guilt tripping bullshit. Everyone’s just about heard it a billion times.
“You don’t know how grateful we are that you guys are here.” Mahiru acknowledged. After resting for a complete hour - with sore muscles and sweltering bodies, Shigure and Mito called everyone down to the gym. “Now that all the hard work is done you guys come back next week to get settled in before the campers arrive.”
It’s miraculous they’ve gotten all the shit out of those damned trucks in a single day. Yuuichirou recalled the last time it had taken a second day as supplies were a necessity for campers to engage in activities.
“We’ll talk matters of divisions when we get back.” Sayuri smiles.
As much as Yuuichirou wanted to collapse on the middle of the ground, he couldn’t do anything humiliating or embarrassing - not in front of Mikaela.
The supervisors and directors would be staying later to organize - so the counselors were granted the opportunity to leave early. Unless they would like to stay, as Guren tried to coax them into doing - the offer was tempting until he stated that they wouldn’t be getting paid extra for it.
Clearly, there was nothing else to do - the offer automatically turned down.
Waiting at the front doors where the counselors were chatting, Yuuichirou spotted Mikaela again - eyes fixated on his phone.
“Is everything good?” He asked.
Mikaela appeared slightly alarmed by his presence. “Yeah.” He smiled. When he reached to tuck a strand of hair behind his ear Yuuichirou spotted the bruise on Mikaela’s finger.
“How did you get that?”
“Oh, I-” Mikaela tucked his phone away, “When I dropped the microwave I think I accidently cut myself.”
“Let me see?” Yuuichirou knew he was overstepping personal boundaries lifting Mikaela’s hand to examine his finger, but the amount of time he’s spent around with people who were the definition of touchy - it was natural to be tending to any injuries in an environment such as this.
Mikaela appeared startled, but he allows Yuuichirou to do so with apprehension.
“I was gonna ask my mom when I get back to take care of it.”
“But does it hurt?”
“A little…”
Yuuichirou had some time to spare. After all, until Guren was done handling shit he realized that he’ll be here for a long while - Shinoa as well, due to Mahiru staying in the building she wouldn’t be able to leave with her only ride home.
“Come with me.”
“Y-Yuu, it’s fine-!”
“Not on my watch.” He claimed, grasping Mikaela’s hand and taking him to the infirmary. “I can’t tolerate an injury that was caused on my behalf.”
“It’s not your fault.” Mikaela countered, “Next time, warm me not to try and lift a microwave…”
He laughs nervously - though Yuuichirou didn’t want to act like a worried, nagging mother - he really was acting like a worried, nagging mother.
Mikaela’s pretty fragile and wasn’t able to lift most things - overall, by the end of this job it was going to make up for his lack of skills.
Yuuichirou retrieved a box of bandages, wrapping them around Mikaela’s index finger.
“Thank God we’re not comin’ here for a second day.” Yuuichirou sighed, “It’s not unusual for any of us to get hurt, I mean, I almost broke my back lifting that fridge.”
Another thing he learned about Mikaela was how easily entertained he was, making snide comments about his issues was something that humored Mikaela - not that he minded. Mikaela had a pretty smile.
The drive back to the cabins the next week was torture.
Shinoa honked the horn at the ass crack of dawn. Guren, Shinya, and Mahiru left the house God knows what time - but it was earlier and by the time Yuuichirou was still asleep, knocked out like a light bulb.
He had packed his things the night before, visiting to talk assignments and discuss where the counselors would be placed in terms of division.
They all planned to drive back to the camp for their stay and fit their shit in Shinoa’s minivan - of course, not everything could fit in the trunk. But they had to get it all inside.
There was a bit of - major bickering on where to put what and how - until Kimizuki blatantly decides that someone should hold their shit in their lap, therefore seating arrangements would have some readjustments.
It took a good hour before Guren called in yelling that they were going to be late if they didn’t get their asses to the camp.
“It’s far too early for this shit.” Narumi muttered.
“Are we gonna talk about why I’m inclined to hold your shit?” Yuuichirou grumbled, “It’s your bag!”
“I don’t have the capacity or stamina to bring anything.”
Yuuichirou was too tired to mention how that barely made any sense. But he was too tired to refute on any crap.
When they arrived, Guren didn’t give them a warm welcome. Most of the counselors were already there, Rika and Yayoi offered to help them take their things back to their cabins.
Arrangements were the same as last year, the girls and boys were divided. The same went for the campers in their divisions.
Yuuichirou tossed Narumi’s stuff back to him, if anything - the rules were the each of them were to handle their own shit.
He shared a bunk with Shuusaku while Narumi shared one with Kimizuki.
“So we agreed on who’s the one that’s packing the drinks?” Narumi asked. “Maybe like, weed this time?”
“Despite the amount of times we’ve gotten away with it, be grateful that Guren hasn’t caught any of you.” Shuusaku warned. Yuuichirou decided that he can unpack tonight, as much as he wanted to crash - Shinya needed everyone in the staff room for a meeting with all counselors.
“That’s all Shinoa.” Yuuichirou stretched his arms, sighing with alleviation to be in one place - he doesn’t have to worry about too much running around until tomorrow. “Don’t ask me, you know she has her ways.”
“She really brought weed or you’re joking?” Kimizuki questioned with qualm, “Ask me how the fuck does no one notice this shit?”
Yuuichirou sputtered out a laugh. “She’s Shinoa.” He shrugged. They were able to do most of the ‘activities’ they’ve engaged in last year all because of Shinoa. Narumi may have brought a drink or two - but no one else wanted to risk the chances of getting caught.
Mahiru treated everyone to coffee when they trekked back to campus, there was plenty - and to be brutally honest, Yuuichirou wanted to snag the thing for himself so he doesn’t knock out before the day ends.
Seated at the large tables in the staff room, two to be exact, Guren walked in - in all his tardy glory. Yuuichirou noticed that Mikaela was there talking with Akane, Lacus, and Rene - aware that they were the group that showed up early.
Yoichi said he’d be staying in a cabin with Mikaela, Lacus, and Rene - as for the girls, Akane was staying with Shinoa and Mitsuba, Yayoi and Rika had their own smaller cabin to share.
“You’re late.” Shinya teased. Guren clicked his tongue.
“I had some errands to run, Mahiru, back me up here!”
“You said eight-thirty on the dot.” Mahiru set her clipboard down, revealing the staff shirt she wore that had the logo of ‘MD STAFF’ printed on the front and back, the attire all members were told to wear everyday at work. She placed a hand on her hip, smiling sympathetically as she motioned to those present in the room. “We’re waiting on you.”
“Yeah alright, whatever.” Guren mumbled, “Did someone save me a damn coffee?”
“There’s a cup left on the counter.” Sayuri says, and it’s clear she’s the only one generous enough to save a cup of coffee for Guren.
He grumbled, muttering how there isn’t even much left pouring himself a mug.
“You should be the one to make more then.” Shinya says flatly.
“Does that look like it’s my fucking job?”
“So lazy.” Shinoa whispers under her breath. Yuuichirou snorted.
“That’s my shitty dad for you.”
The smile is wiped clean off the rest of their faces when Guren sends them a cold glare. When he turned away, their smiles return. Yuuichirou’s eyes meet Mikaela briefly, noticing that Mikaela was smiling in his direction as well. Akane and the others focused on the supervisors up front.
Yuuichirou figured he’d focus now as well, biting his lip to keep from smiling too much.
“We didn’t get to go over any rules the first three times we were here, now that the campers are coming in tomorrow, we might as well do so.”
Groans resound off the walls of the staff room.
“Yeah moan and groan all you want but we’re going to have to do this every year regardless, in case you don’t realize - they’re the rules. I’m your boss, and I tell you whether you like it or not. Any more groaning before I go over them?” He asked heatedly.
No one said anything.
“Splendid.” Guren took a sip of his coffee. He hears Mahiru sigh and roll her eyes, Shinya simply chuckles and Guren throws his hands in the air - deciding to ignore them.
“Profanity is a no-go as long as it’s not in front of the children. Wherever you are and it isn’t with campers, you can call each other thundercunts and piss buckets or whores all you want. Just somewhere a six year old cannot hear.” Guren began.
No fighting in front of the kids. Again, if it’s some playful roughhousing, do it somewhere where it’s not in front of purely innocent eyes. Real fighting, if someone fucked your boyfriend or girlfriend on camp grounds, settle it somewhere in the forest where none of us can see. Because we don’t care who fucked your partner behind your back or who made out with who in the janitor’s closet.”
“I have… a question.” Lacus raised his hand, Guren didn’t look very pleased.
“What?”
“We can do that stuff in here?”
“There’s actually supposed to be none of that here.” Mahiru assured gravely, “But we can’t help the fact that you guys are teenagers with raging hormones, so just don’t do it in front of watching eyes - such as maybe not a forest, or a closet.”
“In other words-” Guren expels, “You can fuck - but don’t do it where any of us can see. But don’t get too excited, these don’t apply for other rules. We want this place to be kept a family-friendly environment, so we don’t want anyone getting too carried away with their recreational leisure activities. You guys know damn well what I’m talking about. After dark? Only appropriate campfire activities are allowed.”
Yuuichirou stiffened, he surely hoped that didn’t mean Guren exactly knew. He can tell the others were likely thinking the same thing.
Guren resumed.
“We are all assigned duties to take care of earlier in the morning before the campers are up. You do those duties, and don’t make other people do them because you’re think you’re too better than everyone else and don’t need to do chores. Unless you want your pay deducted, do the shit you have to do. And please, dear God, do not make an eight year old do them. Chores are assigned to staff only. Yes that includes asking campers to rub your disgusting feet.”
Narumi coughed.
“All counselors are responsible for bringing campers their lunches in assigned divisions at the mess hall. Sending them to their cabins, assisting them, yes that includes whenever they need to take a fucking piss. Even if they just took a piss or a shit five minutes ago. Take ‘em again. Because all they do is piss anyway. Also, making sure to do head-counts for all activities. Know how to discipline, and don’t let them cause chaos wherever they go and tear the entire place down, or you’ll be forced to work overtime for absolutely no pay whatsoever. Be nice, be friendly. But don’t go too overboard or be too friendly. They must address you by Mister or Mrs.
If children are giving you a hard time, no, you can’t poison them, or poison each other if someone is getting too friendly with one of your kids. Even if the urge to beat their ass is tempting. Do not. Work with them the best you can. And don’t make them kill each other for kicks. That would be bad.” Guren skimmed through his clipboard, coffee mug in the other hand.
Activities, for such as swimming specifically, everyone has been assigned to an activity with another counselor. Mito is the lifeguard, however, it is important that someone else supervise the kids while they’re at the dock. Because you never know who could drown, and that would also be bad for us as a camp. Art room, we can’t have the kids drinking paint or shoving, or blowing a very inflammable or toxic substance in someone else’s face. Keep experiments to a minimal.”
“Okay.” Mahiru clapped her hands. “Now that we went over the more… anecdotic rules,” She raised her voice, emphasis clear as she side eyed Guren, “Let’s keep it more simple. Injuries, depending how minor they are - Sayuri is our lovely resident nurse!”
Sayuri waved with a smile, “Unfortunately you can’t take naps in our bed, only campers can for the majority of the day.”
“Well I’ll be damned.” Yuuichirou hears Rene say disappointingly. Kimizuki voiced in agreement.
“Communication is by far the most important in this camp.” Shinya added with redundant enthusiasm, “Don’t be afraid to ask someone for help. Ask someone to take over for you if you need to run an errand, talk to a camper when they need your help. Most importantly, don’t make your summer miserable. It may seem like a lot at first, but you’ll have a lot of fun here.”
“We don’t.” Guren deadpanned. He sipped his coffee, Mahiru glaring at him.
“As for where all counselors will be assigned and our schedules.” Goshi changed the subject.
Yuuichirou was going to responsible for the more active activities, adventure trails and hiking with Narumi.
Kimizuki and Shuusaku were in charge of sports, indoor and outdoors. Lacus and Rene, engage in indoor activities in the gym, periodically throughout the day counselors will take their kids to the gym for a round of games. Mitsuba, Rika, and Yayoi were responsible for swimming, assisting Mito, or bowling activities.
Mikaela and Shinoa took the role as counselors the majority of the day, but they were responsible and hosting all dance activities.
Yoichi and Akane worked together in the art room. However, when it came to trips - counselors were all advised that they be chaperones.
As for morning schedule, all campers gather in the gym for the morning assembly before the day begins. Something Yuuichirou has became accustomed to.
The rest of the day was spent getting settled in, but he took the free time he had to look for Mikaela - to see him in the staff room putting away his empty mug.
It took him quite a lot of courage, considering the others were growing curious of the amount of times Yuuichirou has been talking to Mikaela.
He just bluffed about wanting to show Mikaela around some more - but he was a terrible liar, Shinoa and Narumi definitely weren’t buying it. Waiting for his friends to disperse before catching Mikaela when he’s likely to be alone.
“Nervous?” Yuuichirou started the conversation, “For your first day?”
Mikaela laughs, “Somewhat.” He said diffidently. “You?”
“I’ve been doing this for a year. Consider me a veteran.”
“Then hopefully you can teach me a few things because, your dad’s kinda scary.”
Yuuichirou snorted. “How you holdin’ up?”
“Exhausted.” Mikaela folded his arms. “I’m gonna help the supervisors with anything they need because I just need to occupy myself so I’m not stressed. You have any plans?”
The question caught Yuuichirou by surprise.
“No.” He said earnestly. “I was actually just… walking around for a bit.” He lied. “But how’s your finger?”
“Better.” Mikaela smiled. “So do you wanna help me in the meantime? If you don’t mind?”
Yuuichirou smiled so hard he thought his cheeks would hurt.
“Of course.” He rubbed his chin, replying serenely - as much as he wanted to jump in the air and fist pump. He needed to keep it cool.
Though he knew what he was going to be doing for the rest of the day.
The official first day of camp, Yuuichirou did not want to wake up.
For some reason, Kimizuki decided to be a dick and set an alarm. Disturbing Yuuichirou from his dream he had, collapsing in exhaustion last night from offering to help the supervisors with Mikaela and a couple hours spent at the front desk - he swore that they spent more time together.
Unfortunately, it ended at a goodbye before they returned to their cabins, which fucking sucked. Now he nearly rolled out of bed hearing Kimizuki’s blaring alarm.
Narumi wasn’t as pleased to wake up to his ear drums being practically assaulted.
“What the fuck?”
Silently, Shuusaku woke from the top bunk. When Yuuichirou checked, Shuusaku didn't even seem to be affected by the noise at all. He plainly yawns.
Kimizuki does the same - ignoring Narumi’s vexatious outburst- or likely he had just woken up, the alarm blocking out any voice that tried to speak. He turned it off.
Yuuichirou didn't realize he was covering his ears.
“Once again I repeat what he said.” Yuuichirou croaked, “What the fuck?”
“Good mornin’.” Kimizuki sat up and stretched. He searched for where he left his glasses, somewhere shoved under his pillow.
Narumi chucked a pillow his way. Kimizuki caught it with ease.
“Rise and shine assholes.” He said impassively. “You'll thank me for it.”
“I'll kick your ass for it.” Yuuichirou sneered.
“I need another cup of coffee.” Shuusaku rubbed at his tired eyes, climbing down from the top bunk.
“Seconded.” Kimizuki agreed. Both Narumi and Yuuichirou desired to flop back on their mattresses more than anything.
Yuuichirou’s ears were still ringing, as he attempted to wrangle the numbing sensation in them. He’s surprised he hasn't gone deaf. Asshole.
Breakfast was served at the mess hall for the staff only. There Yuuichirou decided the first thing he was going for was coffee. Anything else he wasn't interested in, desperately needing the caffeine boost due to the sleep Kimizuki had snatched right from them.
“You look like shit.” Shinoa teased. Yuuichirou’s positive his mug was overflowing, taking a huge sip and closing his eyes waiting for the intake to gradually settle within his system.
“It’s gonna be my new look I'll be wearing everyday. Get used to it.”
“The bags under your eyes suit you.”
“Go thank Kimizuki for turning on the fucking alarm because his massive dick ego needs to be stroked.” Yuuichirou said with vehemence.
“Ouch.” Shinoa slapped Yuuichirou on the back with little show of pity. “You’ll live.” She snorted.
There was a breakfast buffet up front, but Yuuichirou would rather stick with his cup of coffee.
Mahiru came in not too long ago exclaiming excitedly about the new work day. Mostly everyone was barely sharing her enthusiasm.
The campers have arrived.
If anyone looked the shittiest - it was Guren.
Yuuichirou spent quite some time getting ready - so he dreaded that breakfast was over so fast, Guren telling everyone to get the fuck out, all seated at the tables rising from their chairs.
Fuck me. He groaned.
He had seating time in isolation briefly before everyone is getting ushered out of the mess hall.
He turned to the tables, frowning when he noticed that everyone dogged the buffet.
Isn't that just lovely.
“Um.” A voice stated when Yuuichirou stood up, fixing the cap placed on his head. “Yuu?”
Yuuichirou lifts his head to meet Mikaela’s gaze.
“Good morning.” Mikaela smiles beautifully. Yuuichirou returned it genuinely, but weakly.
“Mornin’, Mika.”
“Mika?” Mikaela laughs, “That's what my friends call me, but that's okay, I don't mind it if you call me Mika too.”
Yuuichirou grinned, “Sweet.”
“So.” Mikaela bounced, revealing something wrapped in tissue in front of Yuuichirou. “I noticed you came in late and I asked Akane if she can save an extra bagel for me to give to you. It's got cream cheese in it, though I don't know if you wanted butter or anything else.”
Yuuichirou blinked. “You didn't have to-”
Mikaela shakes his head. “No, you need it. Take it, please. Nutrients give you energy!”
Yuuichirou chortled, sighing in defeat.
Mikaela’s kindness was on another level. He accepted it, thanking Mikaela quietly. Both touched and grateful.
In the upcoming hours Yuuichirou’s boost in energy helped him welcomingly greet the campers when they gathered in the gym.
The kids were overjoyed to see the returning counselors. For daily morning exercise, they were taken to the trail, trekking across the woods for a run.
Midst of a path upward a steep hill, on the walkie Mahiru had informed that a group might have been missing a kid and Yuuichirou was asked to find them.
“I heard once we get to the top there's the best view from up there!” Yuuichirou grinned, he clicked on the button to speak.
“I'll be back down at campus for a bit.”
Narumi sighed, “Jesus Christ, something already happened?”
Yuuichirou shrugged, “You know the first week is always hectic just like the ones after.”
“Handling all these kids alone is gonna give half of them concussions, you know how wild they are.” Narumi hissed.
They started to ask where Mister Yuuichirou was going. Yuuichirou couldn't disobey Mahiru’s orders, sympathetically patting Narumi on the shoulder.
“Listen to Mister Narumi for the rest of the trip. I promise I'll catch up with you guys!”
The walk back to the campus front took several minutes, to make it shorter - Yuuichirou jogged inside, looking around.
He took the stairs to the nearby bathroom, as he roamed the halls - he started to hear footsteps, faint - causing him to halt.
He turned around. There was no one there.
Maybe someone just left the office or one of the classrooms, he thinks at first. Then he kept walking, soon, he hears it again.
To test the waters, Yuuichirou continued to walk. He noticed whenever he stopped and kept moving, the footsteps close in and they’d be more delayed in their halt when Yuuichirou waited for them to keep walking.
He was able to note two things.
One, the footsteps sounded meager, soft - compared to Yuuichirou’s resounding ones.
Yuuichirou whirled around. Just as he did - the figure tailing him scurried off.
So my mind’s not fuckin’ with me, eh? Yuuichirou narrowed his eyes. He lifted his feet and bolted for the direction the shadow had disappeared.
Whoever this little critter was, they were fast.
Yuuichirou found himself chasing them all over the premise, until he reached the storage room - he lost track of his pursuer.
At first, he assumed that they had ran off - mentally cursing himself because the situation will only prove worse if they weren’t found.
“Has the missing kid been found, Yuuichirou?”
Well shit. When it’s Guren’s voice, that means - an answer of negative doesn’t mean anything good.
“Workin’ on it.” Yuuichirou answered, “I swear. Just taking a bit of time.”
“Taking a bit of time?”
“I got it, dad, give me a lil bit.” Yuuichirou knew he couldn’t keep Narumi leading more than twenty preteen kids by himself.
Guren said a few more heated words - but Yuuichirou ignored it, hearing a box rustle in the storage room. Yuuichirou hooked the walkie to his khaki shorts, frowning.
...He supposes that they weren’t fast enough to sneak away from Yuuichirou’s sight after all.
Yuuichirou entered the storage room through the open door, lights were off. Squinting in the darkness, he flickered the switch - the lightbulb does the same, the brightness dim.
A box in the corner shifted. Whoever was in there, did not know how to be discreet in the slightest.
Yuuichirou approached the box, slowly - he bent down and lifted the box.
There a little girl sat, fear written all over his expression.
“Found you.” Yuuichirou grinned. “Thought you ran away from me, you’re really fast, you know?”
“...Am I going to get in trouble?” The girl asked, Yuuichirou shakes his head.
“Not at all.” He says, “But you’ll find yourself in a not so good situation if you continue to run away from me.”
Yuuichirou didn’t want to scare the young girl, setting the box aside. “What’s the matter?”
“Nothing.” She answers quietly.
“How are you liking camp?” Yuuichirou questions, “For me, it’s a bit of a hassle. But I like it.”
“I’m too scared to talk to the other kids.” She confessed, “So I asked to go to the bathroom, but when I left everyone was gone.”
“Hey, there’s nothin’ to be scared of.” Yuuichirou says softly, “There are dozens of kids who feel the same as you do, but the whole reason of coming here is to make friends. You never know who would want to talk to you and play with you. The same goes for us when we started working here, only, as I started to warm up to the other counselors it made me feel more better and confident.”
Her eyes widened, sparkling. “Really?”
“Yeah.” Yuuichirou chuckles, “It’s gonna be fun here at camp. Some days may be miserable, or suck eggs, but I promise you you’ll enjoy it. Do you trust me?”
Tears prickling at her eyes, the girl wiped at her eyes. She nodded, understanding.
“Now it’s not allowed for campers to wander alone without supervision, so if you need to go to the bathroom - either you go with the other kids when your counselor takes you or ask them personally to do so.” Yuuichirou stood up, extending his hands.
“What’s your name?”
“Kei.” The girl answers, gladly taking Yuuichirou’s hand.
“And how old are you?”
“Ten.”
She must be in the division of the third and fourth grade campers in terms of age group.
“Do you currently have a class or activity you should be getting to? During the day no campers aren’t doing nothing or wandering alone, at least until sun down.”
“I was with the dance group I think…” Kei replies unsurely, “I don’t know where they went after I left the bathroom and I got lost.”
“I'll take you back there.” Yuuichirou offered, “It's no problem.”
Her eyes sparkled. “Thank you, er-”
“They call me Mister Yuuichirou. But Mister Yuu is also fine. I don't mind either.”
Yuuichirou would've ditched the act of polite mannerisms but it's camp rules. Just for the sake of following the code.
He took her down to the basement where music, recognizably as something kids would like - played from the speakers.
It was quite noisy. Making their way over, Yuuichirou is distracted by the enthusiasm that radiated off Mikaela and Shinoa, the jumping kids were ecstatic.
“We’re going to repeat the steps a couple times before Miss Shinoa and I let you guys do them yourselves!” Mikaela announced. He was smiling dazzlingly, hair that bounced as he went through them. Seems like they were warming up and adjusting in a freestyle dance just to get them wired up.
Shinoa was looking over the clipboard, walking close to Mikaela to speak with him quietly about something.
When Yuuichirou approached the group, they both appeared startled.
“There you are, Kei!” Shinoa smiles brightly, “We were looking all over for you!”
“I found your fan trying to hide from me in a box.” Yuuichirou gave her an assuring warm smile, coaxing her to join the group.
“Um, Shinoa please take care of her and everyone else for a bit.” Mikaela asked, Shinoa gladly obliged holding Kei’s hand.
“Oh my God.” Mikaela sighed. “We didn't realize that she left until we looked over our attendance and asked the others to look for her too whenever they were around, but she hasn't shown up - I had to tell Mahiru and she said you were pretty good at finding lost children?”
Yuuichirou rolled his eyes. “Of course.” He muttered. That was true, but also, it was quite an easy task for anyone.
Kids weren't that strategic when it came to wandering about camp. Going too far usually resulted in a staff search party and the campers were warned about that beforehand, which is why they know better not to roam too far.
“Thank you, and I'm so sorry.” Mikaela clasped his hands in front of his face. “I know you probably had a current class you were teaching.”
“Expert at finding lost children at your service.” Yuuichirou shrugged, “It’s no problem at all.”
“You're silly.” Mikaela clicked his tongue, rolling his eyes with a smile.
“So, Mika can I ask you a question?” Yuuichirou cleared his throat.
“Mhm!” Mikaela beams, “Whoa-” He startles, mouth agape when a child ran up to him throwing their arms around Mikaela’s frame.
“Mister Mika, Mister Mika!” Two more children come sprinting followed by the first one. “Is he bothering you?”
They stare at Yuuichirou menacingly.
Oh Christ.
“Please save me.” Mikaela whispered. “It's only been a few hours and they're already like this.”
“I was going to ask when you had your break…” Yuuichirou laughed sheepishly, “You know, we all come at a certain time while the kids are in the mess hall to have our lunch-”
They're tugging at the fabric of Mikaela’s shirt. Shouting over Yuuichirou’s voice.
“I'm talking to someone.” Mikaela scolds lightly, gesturing over to Yuuichirou. “I’m sorry!” He apologized timidly.
“Ain't a problem.” Yuuichirou just wanted a damn answer and those kids to go dance already.
Mikaela grasps onto a child’s hand, chortling. “Um I think Akane and I go to the break room the same time?”
“What time?” Yuuichirou grinned.
“Around fifteen after twelve.” Mikaela said quickly, “Now shoo to your class before my kids attack you.”
“I probably should.” Yuuichirou backed away, from the looks on their faces they weren't looking too pleased.
“Yeah! You probably should!” Shinoa hollered, Yuuichirou glared at her as Mikaela began to lead the kids back to the group.
“Don't push it, vixen.” Yuuichirou threatened, complying to Mikaela - he does exit before the children could get suspicious.
Yuuichirou earned a slap on the back of the head by Narumi by showing up later than anticipated.
“Stop drooling over Mika’s ass next time and do your fucking job.” He whispered with vehemence, a forced smile appearing on his lips when he turned to the kids.
Yuuichirou had no choice but to mirror the action.
He wasn't drooling over Mikaela. He denied. But yes, he certainly was drooling over Mikaela.
They took the kids across the nature trail and explained the history of the forest, playing a couple games and sending boundaries within the vast territory.
Everyone missed Mister Yuuichirou, and because payback is a bitch - Yuuichirou made it extra clear that he missed his kids as well. From a mile away someone can point out they favored Yuuichirou more than they favored Narumi.
Narumi found all the praise irritating. Aware he was the strictly stoic one while Yuuichirou could raise his voice to make the kids pay attention, but he was playful and during tag games the kids loved to chase him around, Yuuichirou intentionally slowing his speed to make himself appear inferior towards the kids’ skills in physical activity.
“Fix that frown on your face and maybe the kids won’t think you're Squidward Tentacles.” Yuuichirou teased. “Remember to watch out for ticks! We hope you're wearing socks under your sneakers!” He called out. Just in case, all counselors were supplied with a first aid kit designed as a small bag strapped to their hips.
“Can we race again, Mister Yuuichirou?”
“And you're supposed to be the complete opposite?” Narumi shoved Yuuichirou, who smiled smugly, rushing over to give all the kids high fives.
“When we reach the hill we’ll race back down for sure.” He promised, “Everyone did an awesome job today, thank Mister Narumi for keeping everyone safe! Thankfully no one got a concussion while I was gone or hurt themselves severely.”
The children cheered.
“What are you supposed to say?” Yuuichirou arched a brow.
They hesitantly turned to Narumi, with his arms folded - eyes broadening at the attention placed on him.
“Thank you Mister Narumi.” The responses are quiet, reluctant, and in terrible unison.
“You're welcome.” Narumi grumbled. Yuuichirou grinned charmingly at the children.
“See, kinda reminds us all of Squidward right?”
“Hey!” Narumi barked, everyone laughed boisterously.
The hike ended briefly after, the trek down was spent teasing Narumi, though Yuuichirou enjoyed his time with the group.
They were clinging to him, as he told them funny stories that made them laugh. Some of them wanted to play him in basketball after lunch like they had done last year, Yuuichirou knew that even though they were kids they were pretty good.
His muscles were sore by the time they reached the mess hall.
All the kids and the counselors gathered at the area, Yuuichirou seeing Mikaela midst the crowd, a handful playing with Shinoa’s hair and holding her hands. The same with Mikaela.
Yuuichirou supposed his kids were envious at the sight, because one jumped on his back scaring the shit out of him. Narumi laughed as he was bombarded like a dick.
He wanted to let the boy off, until he saw the smile on Mikaela’s face, Yuuichirou blushed a little - grinning sheepishly.
Yoichi and Akane had flower crowns on their heads, giving it out to the other campers. They had made them in art, and it was advised they keep it on at least until the end of the day and not to ditch it somewhere on the ground.
The staff room had air conditioning when Yuuichirou walked in, more than relieved to be in a room so cool compared to the two hundred degree heat hotter than hell weather outside, which was fucking unbelievable.
“I'm already ready to fucking nap for the rest of the day.” Kimizuki deadpanned walking in.
“I second that.” Narumi follows, Yuuichirou sat down and let out a loud groan.
“We’re gonna have to deal with this for an entire month.”
“Six weeks, precisely.” Shinoa popped in, Mitsuba instantly bolted from the door to make a break for the fridge.
“Oh thank God, my water’s still cold.”
Yuuichirou had forgotten the others have to stay in the mess hall, not everyone having lunch break at the same time depending on their schedules.
Mahiru and Guren liked to switch things around a bit, just to wear them out to death throwing task after task at their faces - so Yuuichirou hoped that this would be temporary for at least a while. Breaks were important to him.
And he’d definitely call out on the bullshit if he couldn't make it to any of his breaks. He hated when they were messed with.
Mikaela walked in, arms spreading wide - the cold breeze from the air conditioner hitting him.
“Oh my God.” He expels, “I want to marry that AC.”
“Not if I marry it first.” Yuuichirou teased. Mikaela walked over to Yuuichirou, reaching to ruffle his hair and shove it aside playfully.
“We can share.” He laughed.
“I bet Yuu would really like that. “ Narumi took out his snacks, saying it a mocking tone.
“Fuck off Narumi, I have profanity pass. And it's unlimited.”
“Since when?”
Chortling, Mikaela sat down in the chair beside Yuuichirou. “You both are silly.”
“Guys,” Shinoa spoke, “Mahiru put a bottle of diet coke in the freezer if any of you want some.” She offered, holding up the bottle.
Everyone rose from their seats, Mitsuba got the cups while the bottle was placed in the center of the table. Cap opened for everyone to pour themselves a drink.
Now that it was break, Yuuichirou went in his bag to retrieve the bagel Mikaela had given to him during breakfast.
“I didn't pack lunch.” Mikaela sat down, pulling a folded crumpled napkin from his bag. “Lacus rushed me out so I only had time to make do with the first thing I saw so I'll just snack on this.”
There were pieces of crushed cereal inside.
“I didn't know you were the type to eat cereal dry for lunch.” Yuuichirou said, “That's cute.”
“I'm hungry.” Mikaela answered, popping cereal into his mouth. “Plot twist.”
They share a laugh.
“The amount of times I'm called Miss Shinoa in a day? I can seriously be a sugar daddy.” Shinoa unzipped her lunch bag to munch on an unfinished pop tart.
“I have no problem disciplining little kids, but only if they listen.” Narumi says, “If they as much ask me if I'm Squidward again someone might get slapped. It's not controllable, the urge to is this tempting and Yuu, you're included because you're an asshole.”
“God,” Mitsuba dreads, “What happened?”
Everyone snorted, Yuuichirou doesn't fail to notice the way Mikaela covered his mouth to hide his own as he munched quietly on his cereal.
“I told the kids he looked like Squidward.” Yuuichirou confessed, “And now they've been calling him that ever since.”
“He kinda does.” Shinoa squints, Kimizuki and Mitsuba voiced their agreement. "Not as miserable as Kimizuki though."
“You guys are mean.” Mikaela scolded, though the smile on his face is evident.
“But you can't lie,” Yuuichirou shrugged, “Kimizuki, you look miserable as shit.”
The room filled with snickers as Kimizuki pinched the bridge of his nose, removing his glasses.
“You know what,” he began, “I'm way too tired to be having any of this shit today, Mika, welcome to Camp Moon Demon. Everyone here is an asshole, including Yuuichirou.”
Mikaela laughed, “I refuse to believe that any of you are.”
“We do this everyday.” Yuuichirou said without abashment.
“Could I get used to this?”
“Yeah, I think you can.”
“Careful Yuu-san, you're lookin’ like you're in love.” Shinoa joked.
“Shinoa-” Yuuichirou scowled, Mikaela just laughs even more shaking his head lightly and God damn it Yuuichirou told her once already not to fucking push it.
Yoichi walked in, followed by Akane - the two of them constantly running their hands through their hair - seemingly relieved to be in a cool room.
“Are we all venting out our frustrations? Because I have a lot to say.” Yoichi exhaled.
“Good afternoon everyone, not to take advantage of the privilege to use profanity but I'm fucking pissed.” Akane vexed, undoing the braid in her hair.
“Oh dear. She never curses.” Mikaela said with deep concern.
"Call controlling children a satanic form of birth control."
"I take that as something bad happened."
"Yeah." Akane sputtered out a laugh at Mikaela, "Intentionally making another kid drink toxins."
“Are you angry? Me too, girl.” Shinoa motioned for them both to sit at the table with their lunches.
“We all are.” Narumi adds dully.
“Let us commence the shit talking because I have so much more to say too.” Kimizuki agreed.
These were one of the reasons why Yuuichirou enjoyed break time.
("This kid was crying because he lost his sock, and I felt like telling him I do not fucking care."
"Why would you have your shoe off during the day?"
"Why would you have your shoe off at all?")
By the next upcoming days that have passed - it's clear among the staff that Yuuichirou definitely had a crush on Mikaela.
But Yuuichirou couldn't see in how someone could be so darn perfect.
In the mornings he and Akane would say good morning and good afternoon to everyone, baking cookies for the staff - and because Yuuichirou tended to wake up late a lot - Mikaela had no problem saving him a bagel.
He felt bad - Mikaela was the sweetest thing ever and he was a fucking mess and the others would just ridicule him on it because they were dicks.
On the bright side, there's more to say - how the new staff members warmed up to the crew quite quickly in a matter of days.
A great number of field trips to the countryside and the city were exhausting - but if that meant sharing a cramped yellow bus with Mikaela, count Yuuichirou in. Their divisions were practically an age apart.
Yuuichirou had heart eyes whenever Mikaela vented about children of all topics, sometimes tending to walk into the staff room without saying a single word - and automatically, everyone knew what was up, slowly beginning to understand each other.
“I need a giant bottle of alcohol. I don't care if that's literally all I drink for breakfast, I would love whoever to death that puts one in the shelf for me.” Is the first thing he had said. Yuuichirou swore he’s never laughed so hard in ages.
He's not sure why everyone decides to be dicks instead of supporting Yuuichirou like normal friends would.
If that was bad enough - his kids had noticed the way he longingly stared at Mikaela and jogged up to talk to him during morning assemblies.
Mahiru would come in and shout out the camp catchphrase, “Hey! Ho! Moon Demon let's go!” and in terms of age division, Yuuichirou had been placed right next to Mikaela in the gym.
Shinoa said at this point Yuuichirou was making it pretty obvious.
How he waved to Mikaela first thing in the morning and how most of Mikaela’s kids would glare at him.
How Mikaela is the first to give him earthy hugs whenever he sees Yuuichirou.
During breakfast, the kids were making lanyards in art the other day and Mikaela had walked up to Yuuichirou smiling and placing a lanyard bracelet around his wrist. The color was blue, green, and white.
“It’s our favorite colors, I just used white to add some glamour but… Akane suggested it since I was freaking out on how I should make it for you.”
“You know this is the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me.” Yuuichirou laughed, “My coworkers don't even fucking like me enough to make me this shit. I always thought these were cool.”
“I can teach how to make some, when you don't have a class.”
Yuuichirou obliged.
It's in the mess hall when Kei asks, “Do you have a crush, Mister Yuu?”
Yuuichirou almost spit out all of his water.
“Shouldn't you be sitting down with your fellow campers?” He motioned over to the tables where they were happily chatting and eating.
“Guys!” He hollered, making the kids who bolted for the jug of grape juice for the week halt in their tracks. “No more refills! The more you drink the more you have to go pee and I don't have time to take ten kids to the bathroom at once, just wait until bathroom break.”
“Is it true?” Kei prodded, tugging on the fabric of Yuuichirou’s shirt.
“I don't know what you're talking about.”
“I'm talking about Mister Mikaela!” She pouts, “Miss Akane told us that Mister Mikaela made that lanyard for you and me and my friends spied on you guys and saw you walk to the cabins together last night after we went swimming.” She grinned, lightly snacking Yuuichirou in the arm.
“You have a crush.”
“No I don't.” Yuuichirou denied, he was going to murder Shinoa. “You guys aren't even supposed to be awake around that time. It's bedtime hours!”
Kei giggled. “Mister Yuuichirou’s got it bad!”
Taichi, Ako, and Chihiro made their way over to them.
“For who?” Taichi asked.
“He has a crush on Mister Mikaela-”
Yuuichirou pulled them all aside from the other campers, “You guys can't tell anyone.”
“What? That Mister Mika made this for you?”
“It's so pretty!”
“Promise.” Yuuichirou urged. But the four only giggled, Ako examining the lanyard on his wrist.
“Are you guys married?!”
She was vehemently told to shush but already, Yuuichirou didn't know whether to hate or love these children.
He had a feeling he wasn't going to be able to trust them with this secret, because soon - the way Yuuichirou’s campers were mooching off Mikaela and staring terribly discreet at whenever they interacted, whether it were games outside or in the gym.
It was observed how they battled against each other with their kids, often competing for kicks - with music playing on the speakers, the campers would be pumped to encourage both counselors to give it all they've got.
They also got front desk duty a couple times, and usually it was a drag - but Mikaela never made it boring.
The campers were undoubtedly up to something, for sure, on the other end.
“They're like six years old.” Narumi deadpanned. “They don't know shit about relationships. I mean, they thought a lanyard bracelet around your wrist meant that you were fucking married or something.”
“But that's not even the issue!” Yuuichirou exclaimed then, “I can't have Mika knowing you know - from fucking children, whether they're six, seven, or eight point two!”
“If I were you,” Narumi seemed to be finding Yuuichirou’s crisis amusing, “I would use this to an advantage. None of us think you have the balls to confess to Mikaela but you've got pure fresh bait practically hanging off you every single day.”
Narumi did have a point. Shinoa said she’d surely be plotting with the children, Yoichi and Akane thought it was cute. Mitsuba thought it was stupid - Kimizuki said he was fucked and well Mikaela?
Mikaela didn't have a single clue.
And as for Shinya and Mahiru, while Guren gave less of a fuck, calling Yuuichirou a coward - the two were encouraging him.
They were practicing kayaking and swimming, Mito on duty - as the counselors took the campers there for the afternoon when Mikaela came up to him while Yuuichirou had Chihiro on his shoulders splashing the kids, some clinging to him.
“Psst.” Taichi grinned deviously.
Yuuichirou glared at them, taking Chihiro off his shoulders.
“Hey Yuu-chan!” Mikaela waved, Yuuichirou perks up instantly upon Mikaela’s presence.
Even the scorching sun, Mikaela’s golden locks shone in the sunlight and his bright blue eyes sparkled - as if he were a deity that magically descended upon all of these lowly mortals, Yuuichirou himself included.
“Hey!” Yuuichirou grinned, “Sup?”
“I think I just put on an unhealthy amount of sunscreen.” Mikaela answered meekly. He was wearing a regular blue collared shirt sleeve with swim shorts, with small sandals - nails and toes painted the same color as his divinely hair. “Could we talk?”
“Yeah, of course.” Yuuichirou tried not to stammer, “Not about something bad is it? I know that the campers already pranked Guren again and he's not happy about that.”
They may have attempted to shave off his eyebrows and wreck the cabin he resided in, and Shinya refuses to take the blame - and Yuuichirou desperately hoped that Guren didn't think he had anything to do with the pranks, well not all - considering him, Shinoa and the others may have orchestrated one or two.
“If anything that's not my problem.” Mikaela jested, “I just wanted to tell you that the campers have been acting a little strange and for some reason, they come to the conclusion that we’re secretly married and won't stop asking me and Shinoa questions about you.”
Yuuichirou deadpanned. “Those God damn kids said they wouldn't say anything.”
Mikaela giggled. “They asked me when our honeymoon was and I didn't know what to say, I don't remember scheduling one.”
“Please don't answer to their questions, or say anything at all. I swear, they're just purposefully fucking with us.”
“I'm not saying I mind either.” Mikaela shrugged, “Maybe they were just curious as to why we’re wearing the same lanyard bracelets?”
The kids splashed around in the water, the other counselors keeping them in check and making sure they stay within safe boundaries in their surroundings.
“Just tell em maybe it's because we’re fuckin best friends for life.” Yuuichirou suggested. “You tell me how this equals marriage?” He gestured to the lanyard bracelet on his wrist.
“The location of the wedding is speculated.” Mikaela smiles.
“The forest where the mosquitos are slowly feasting on our flesh has gotta be the best spot then.” Yuuichirou played along.
He is fully aware they were flirting in front of all the campers but at this point, he could give less of a fuck that Mikaela didn't mind.
But his anxiety told him he was getting carried away.
Mikaela was only being sweet.
“Hi Mister Mika!”
“How come you aren't getting in the lake?” A kid asks, and Mikaela folds his hands in front of him - his shapely smile remains.
“I wanted to check on all divisions and see if everything's alright before I can go in the lake, only because I choose to.”
Yuuichirou realized his kids were gone from the premise. He didn't know when they got out of the pool, thinking they went for a water or bathroom break.
“You should come in!” Yuuichirou agrees, “Not guaranteed you won't get splashed though.”
“But I'll live, right?” Mikaela said with worry.
“What were you guys talking about?”
The question made Yuuichirou still, regardless- Mikaela chuckled.
He felt bad lying to children rather than saying he and Mikaela were discussing their secret wedding plans away from campers’ ears.
“Just talking.” Yuuichirou said more sternly, loathing their nosiness.
“Be nice, Yuu-chan.” Mikaela stuck his tongue out.
Yuuichirou was trying. Oh he was. Then he remembered Narumi’s words, and relaxed his shoulders.
“Would you rather come in the lake yourself or have us pull you in?”
The kids cheerfully, agreeing. “Swim in the lake with us!”
Mikaela backed away, slipping out of his sandals and brushing his hair back. “I'm not a fan of being thrown in freezing cold lakes so fine, I'll just sit and put my feet in.”
“LOOK OUT!”
The shrill voice came from Shinoa, as suddenly - all heads whipped towards the female sprinting from what seemed to be a good few of Yuuichirou’s campers mixed with her own and a couple others.
There was a duck floatie around her waist as she came rushing right into Mikaela, knocking him over - the weight of the children combined with her own.
Mikaela yelped, Yuuichirou scrambled to swim over to the edge and spread his arms open for Mikaela to fall right into them.
The kids were bustling with cheers and laughter despite the fact that Mikaela was close to falling into the lake against his will.
Arms looped around Yuuichirou’s shoulder, Mikaela making a shriek of a comment of how cold the lake is - the splash that followed by it wetting up the overjoyed children now that all the other campers, including Shinoa - jumped in the pool.
“Oh my God.” Mikaela breathed, and now they were face to face.
Yuuichirou failed to hide the blush on his face, muscles trembling and heart racing at how close Mikaela was to his bare chest, overwhelmed that this was actually happening.
“Sorry…”
“It's. It's cool.”
The kids high fived Shinoa.
“It worked!” She boasted a little too loudly for Yuuichirou’s liking, “I knew I could count on you guys.”
“Mister Yuuichirou is blushing!” Kei pointed out.
Yuuichirou deathly glared at them.
“Oh my.” Mikaela gaped, and he chortled at their predicament. On the other hand, Yuuichirou wanted to splash perhaps a handful of lake water in Shinoa’s face.
“Are you okay Mika? We totally didn't see you there, I wasn't looking when they were chasing after me. Right, guys?” She asked dramatically, her sympathy so fake Yuuichirou recoiled at her terrible performance.
“Do you need to give Mika CPR?”
“You're okay, right?” Yuuichirou ignored them, asking. Mikaela allowed Yuuichirou to lower him into the cold lake water after Mikaela nodded.
“I was pretty sure I was moments away from death but, I can swim.” Mikaela said reassuringly.
Yuuichirou was incredibly grateful.
Dare he say for the incident - though still, he wasn't letting Shinoa off the hook.
Narumi wondered if it was him or Yuuichirou’s kids have become ten times more annoying the following days.
Guren called a staff meeting warning everyone that the pranks needed to stop.
The pranks did not stop.
Matter of fact, Yuuichirou, Shinya, Narumi, Shinoa, Mahiru, and Mikaela planned another - replacing all the toothpaste Guren had with ounces of ketchup inserted inside and they waited next morning for him to realize he had coated his molars with layers of ketchup.
But it took him a while to come to that conclusion - thinking that he lost a tooth overnight and too tired to register that he wasn't actually bleeding massively from it.
It was the most hilarious thing ever.
Yuuichirou and the others, and the crowd of campers that lent a helping hand with ketchup jars stolen from the kitchen at the mess hall, bolted from the cabins at the ass crack of dawn screaming and laughing.
(“I'll get you crazy kids!” He shouted atop his lungs. Mikaela and Yuuichirou gave each other a high five. Then they did the same with Mahiru, Shinya, Narumi, and Shinoa, exchanging high fives with the campers
The campers didn't miss the way Yuuichirou held Mikaela’s hand when they all fled in horrible formation.
“Aww, they're holding hands.”
“That's so cute!”
“Would you guys shh and don't blow our cover?”
Yuuichirou remembered about the profanity policy and Mikaela can tell how badly he wanted to tell off these children, especially the way Shinoa and Narumi were whispering and conspiring like major dicks)
And yet, no one ever confesses to the pranks. During breakfast Guren walks in asking for coffee and is greeted by a saccharine sweet “morning Guren!” and he stares at everyone as if they've grown two heads, then he grumbles more as Mahiru makes him a coffee.
Mikaela and Yuuichirou laugh like teenagers, more like one oblivious of the crush the other has on them while munching away on pop tarts.
Yuuichirou realized he's practically grown an army of encouraging kids that lingered the more closer he got with Mikaela, sneaking out to watch the counselors gather during late night bonfires to have a s’mores party and tell forbidden horror stories to scare them into going back to their cabins.
He had taken his kids with Narumi to the art room when Kei suggested they make paper bouquet wraps for the ones they've collected on the nature trail for Mister Mika.
“Aw!” Akane nearly teared up, turning to Yuuichirou. “That's so cute.”
“They were begging him to do it for ages.” Narumi was seated by the air conditioner. “As if they don't give Mika enough gifts.”
Yuuichirou scratched the back of his head. “That is true…”
“Are you planning on telling them they're from you?” Akane asked. “I'll tell Mika he's got a secret admirer.”
Yuuichirou turned to the children, excited at their seats to work on their makeshift wraps for what they’ve picked out of the fields.
“I've got a favor for you guys.” Yuuichirou had come up with an idea.
They got to work.
It's during campfire hours, Yuuichirou’s kids spent a good two days working on their bouquets when they send them to Mikaela.
There were notes placed in each and every single one of them.
He had to disappear from the marshmallow feast Shinya was hosting with Rika, Yayoi, Shuusaku, and the rest of the staff at the campfire.
The counselors were helping set up the tents when Akane told Yuuichirou Mikaela was in his cabin reading all of the notes.
Yuuichirou had his bouquet in his hands, deciding that he would give it to Mikaela last.
He knocked on Mikaela’s door, watching the fireflies that occasionally appeared and hearing the noises of loud children and Guren horribly telling jokes that made them laugh.
The cabin lights were turned on, including those in the forest area - some of the campers had flashlights as they played games within safe grounds.
Mikaela stepped away from his desk, door left open as he folded his arms - surprised to see that Yuuichirou had another batch in his hands.
“I thought I received enough today, these from one of the campers too?” Mikaela asked, “Not that I mind, these were all so incredibly sweet and apparently I'm one of the best counselors they've ever had. Forgive me for lamely tearing up. I finished reading through all of the notes and have gotten a love letter.”
“A love letter?” Now Yuuichirou didn't arrange that. “Not that I can blame them but, damn, they beat me to it.”
“Don't be jealous.” Mikaela held up the lanyard bracelet on his wrist, “We’re happily in friendship marriage.”
Yuuichirou snorted loudly, and he is positive he's got it bad.
“I can't help it.”
“Then looks like you've got competition.”
“Then maybe this would increase my chances,” Yuuichirou laughs, “These are from me. Hope I'm not adding too much to your plate.”
Mikaela placed both hands on his chest, mouth opening with a silent aww.
Yuuichirou flushed a little with a charming smile. “To the best and sweetest counselor in Moon Demon?”
Mikaela accepted the bouquet of flowers, noticing that Yuuichirou had picked out Hyacinths.
“They're blue, and they reminded me of you- also Narumi and the kids said I should pick em because I don't know shit about flowers but I think my dad used to garden these when I was a kid.” Yuuichirou explained, “you're not allergic to them right?”
Mikaela sniffed them, shaking his head. “No. They're pretty, thank you sweetie. You're just as good as the kids are. I'll thank Akane for making these beautiful bouquet wraps. I wonder who told them all to give these to me.” He laughed.
Yuuichirou winked, backing away. “I think you should read the note then.”
Mikaela hesitantly pulled out the note, Yuuichirou turned on his heel to walk away. Wishing he could see the smile that spread on Mikaela’s face.
He figures now he should join the kids, and plot for his next move to win Mikaela.
“Yuu-chan!”
Eyes widening, footsteps descend his direction and he turns around to be greeted by arms thrown around his shoulders - catching a glimpse of bouquet in Mikaela’s one hand, the free hand looped around Yuuichirou.
Stunned, it takes several seconds for Yuuichirou to return the hug.
“They’re beautiful. Thank you for sending these to me.”
“Hey, what are best friends in marriage for?”
Mikaela laughed, muffled in his shoulder. He pulls away, gently tugging Yuuichirou’s wrist to place his hand over it - their matching bracelets on top of one another.
They settle on balling up their fists and placing their hands beside each other.
“Come to think of it, this kind of looks like a wedding.”
“I think we’re doing the vows wrong.”
They share a laugh, eyes flickering to meet each other’s gazes.
As much as Yuuichirou opted to lean in… maybe just slowly - eyes scanning the assailable expression on Mikaela’s face, Mikaela beats him to it.
By gently smacking him on the forehead with the bouquet of flowers in his hand.
“Good night, Yuu-chan.” Mikaela simpered, Yuuichirou comprehended that Mikaela knew what Yuuichirou thought of doing, and held back from calling him a vixen.
“See ya tomorrow morning, Mika.” Yuuichirou softly rubbed his forehead, face wrinkling into a frown. God damn it. So close.
Mikaela whirled around once to sniff the flowers with a jubilant smile, bouncing as he turned around. His optimism never failed to be contagious.
It takes Yuuichirou a few days to think through his next move when Mahiru announces the annual color wars have started. A competition where the teams battle against one another, in this case - one against one and the same went for the other teams.
Still, it resulted in a battle royale regardless - and it’s one of the activities Yuuichirou didn’t dread a single bit.
The only part that surprised him was not the fact that declaring war against a team meant dumping a water balloon on a captain’s head, it was that a camper from the blue team had done it.
And Yuuichirou had been minding his own business, thoughts of plotting broken when said child had come up behind him and splashed water on his head.
Family tradition.
If a captain is attacked first - it automatically meant the very floor they stood on beneath their feet was a battleground. No matter where.
The look that Narumi gives him is all knowing.
Oh hell no.
This is war.
The culprit giggling, Yuuichirou dropped the drink in his hand in the garbage. He had just taken his campers hiking and they took a quick lunch break at the mess hall.
Before he had time to take cover, his kids warned him late about the army of kids that came to pelt him with water balloons.
He was completely outnumbered and unprepared. And if he didn't act now, he was fucked.
The children retreating, Yuuichirou shook the water out of his hair and ran a hand through it. He gave Narumi the signal to snap the kids out of it. Sitting there in shock.
The green team - the one assigned to Yuuichirou and Narumi - have been attacked.
“Everyone!” Narumi boomed, as the kids quickly assembled. “We need to get everyone on the green team to counter attack. They'll be coming back, which is why we need to gear up. Can't fight back without any weapons, or that means we lose.”
And of course, none of the campers wanted that.
Scattering from their seats, the mess hall will now be the battlefield, Yuuichirou and Narumi ordered the kids to gather the campers belonging to their crew.
“The blue team struck us first.” Narumi announced, “We’re coming for them.”
“Does that mean we’re against Mister Mika?” Kei asked worriedly.
As much as it wasn't anticipated - it had come to this. “Seems so.” Yuuichirou said.
When a competition started between teams- there was no fucking around.
The team grabbed their backpacks, following after Narumi and Yuuichirou.
They entered the art room, where water balloons were stored in the storage closet.
The kids ran to the sink at the back to fill them up and stuff them in their backpacks, using as much water balloons as their hands can carry.
“Everyone put on their war paint.” Yuuichirou went for the pot of green paint and smeared two lines on both of his cheeks. Narumi helped apply those to some of the children.
The kids complied - wanting to as look cool and badass as possible, backpacks on and of course, Yuuichirou reminding them to put on their angry faces.
Until the entire green team of kids assembled, some of campers now being swept into the fight, all of them scurried to Yuuichirou awaiting his command. Narumi the co-leader.
One thing for sure, he was prideful - despite how lame that sounded, they still needed to be fully prepared and to up their game and counter against Mikaela’s surprise attack.
“I know where we can get shields!” Kei suggested, “The boxes in the storage closet!”
There was no time to waste. They can be waiting in the mess hall any moment by now.
“Lead them there. The rest of us will wait here and finish filling up the balloons.” Yuuichirou retorted, “Be on the lookout for anyone on the blue team, someone grab a bucket to keep any extra water balloons for those who need extra ammo. We gotta be prepared no matter what. And where he stand? This is our base.” He explained,
"Stick together. We are all allies and protect one another at all costs. These are your friends among you. Understood?”
They all nodded.
“Understood?”
“Yes! Mister Yuu!”
“Who’s the best?!” Narumi hollered.
“The green team!” The campers echo in return.
“Go.” Yuuichirou motioned for Kei and a fellow campers, Taichi, Ako, and Chihiro to take their leave. “Make it quick!"
Ten minutes later boxes are distributed among the team, and so far - the blue team hasn't made their move.
They're waiting for Yuuichirou.
It explained the atmosphere that suddenly changed in the air all around the camp. Aside from those who casually weren't involved in the wars doing their own thing, the other teams included - the rest of them engaged in the plan to attack.
Yuuichirou lead his army of small warriors supplied with their weapons back into the mess hall.
Someone had turned the lights off.
“Fall out.” Yuuichirou said quietly, scouting the area. “Don't be afraid. Stay close.”
Entering with caution, Yuuichirou admitted that he felt chills run down his spine acknowledging how quiet it has become considering his campers and the rest of the green team was in the mess hall.
It's dead silent.
“We've been used as bait.” Narumi whispered, “Where have they gone?”
Yuuichirou put up a hand. “Any signs of anyone hiding?”
Briefly, the children dispersed to scope the area.
“We don't see anyone.” They reported back.
Marching in, Yuuichirou kept his eyes peeled. “Don't drop your guard down for a second. Once they come, we’re giving it all we've got.”
It could be now. It could be minutes later.
So they've arrived earlier than expected.
Knowing Shinoa and Mikaela, as from last year’s experience - he doesn't know what the two of them together could have up their sleeves. They work well with each other making a dangerous alliance.
But Yuuichirou refused to fear the advantages the enemy possessed.
For a moment, the only sound lingers is the whispers and jaded breaths.
“HERE THEY COME!” Narumi shouted, and Yuuichirou watched how they flooded in through the back door into the mess hall.
“Alright move out!” Yuuichirou exclaimed, the blue team and the green team clash at once.
Pelting water balloons at each other, the premise becomes covered with them being tossed in different directions.
Not all aimed attacks were precise, as most of them couldn't see as well in the dark. But that made neither teams at an advantage.
“SHIELDS!” Narumi yelled, the kids let out war cries, water balloons splashed against the boxes - wet splotches made the solid grow soggy, but they've done a good job at keeping them cover.
Chihiro threw a box at Narumi to hand to Yuuichirou. He had forgotten about supplying a shield for himself because he was too busy leading the children.
“Take it from Squidward! Captain!”
Some of the kids snickered, Yuuichirou included.
“Are you guys still calling me that nickname since weeks ago?” Narumi questioned dreadingly.
Yuuichirou ducked, “Thanks.” He grinned, taking the box and swiftly shielding himself.
Narumi glares, in the midst of the laughing kids - he warned Yuuichirou not to get himself pelted in the face. Balloons were coming everywhere.
“I'll handle Shinoa this time.” Narumi offered. “If I could find the little squirt.”
Just as he said that, Shinoa had come out of her hiding place - leaping from one of the tables - the kids staring at her with awe as she started chucking water balloons at their direction, and immediately - Yuuichirou sprinted and ducked out of the way, Narumi shielding them both with the cardboard box.
Shit. That girl was always up to something new.
Yuuichirou frowned, it was dark - other than the light coming from the windows - these kids knew how to stealthily keep themselves out of sight.
Shirt wet and clinging to his skin, where patches of built, tanned skin can be revealed underneath- Yuuichirou quietly dispersed from the group to find a certain co-captain of the opposite team.
Where could he be?
Yuuichirou opted to turn on the lights, searching for the switch and staying low.
Flicking on the switch, Yuuichirou should've told himself disturbing the battle that was going on was a bad idea.
As soon as he turned around he caught a glimpse of pure golden that came into view.
Yuuichirou gawked on the spot, as he lifted his shield. Mikaela had lunged at him to throw the balloon.
Neither hit.
Mikaela landed on the ground without staggering.
“So I finally found you.” Yuuichirou mused.
“You dare seek out to challenge the final boss?” Mikaela questioned, and dare Yuuichirou say he sounded intimidating - the aura radiated off him.
Mikaela and Yuuichirou’s campers rush to assemble with their respective leaders.
“So you've threatened the green team.” Narumi spoke.
“We hit first. You hit back.” Shinoa smirked. “Those are the rules of war isn't it?”
“I've never expected you and I to be enemies.” Yuuichirou added. He told his campers to cease their weapons, voice grave.
“All’s fair in love and war.” Mikaela played along, shirt tied at the side of his waist, as he held a water balloon in his hand.
“You've threatened our people.”
“Should you have attacked us first?” Mikaela’s lip quirked up, stepping forward until he was face to face with Yuuichirou.
“Careful, Mika. You're starting a war you can't win.” Yuuichirou kept his face solid as a stone.
“I never thought we would be putting our… coalition on the line.” Mikaela gestured to the lanyard bracelets. It's the cause for Yuuichirou’s brash smile. “Sure you wouldn't like to surrender, Yuu-chan?”
“Green team’s gonna kick your butt.”
“Not if we do first.”
“Then it's on.”
The way the campers stared at the two counselors with shock, added to the rising tension unlike anything in front of innocent eyes they've ever seen before.
“Only on one condition.” Yuuichirou proposed, with calm eyes - Mikaela’s eyes studied his expression, undecipherable.
“You may speak of terms.”
“Let my warriors decide what I should get as my reward if we win this war.” Yuuichirou answered.
“Reward?” Mikaela raised his chin, after some contemplation - Shinoa and Narumi agreeing to the terms, they waited for the campers to make a suggestion.
“A kiss!” Taichi exclaimed.
The attention turned to the young boy, Yuuichirou’s eyes broadening, bewildered.
Now he wants to take it back.
“A kiss!” Kei immediately agreed. Soon, all the kids were chanting it.
“A kiss! A kiss! A kiss!”
“You have to kiss Yuuichirou.” Ako smiled deviously, “On the lips!”
“Cooties!”
“Too bad! Those are the terms we agreed to!”
Mikaela exhaled a feted, “oh dear,” under his breath, and he giggled - completely breaking out of character and the austere tension had just faded then and there.
“My warriors have spoken.” Yuuichirou coughed.
Mikaela cleared his throat, “Very well.” He said. “I agree to their terms.”
“You knew they were gonna say that.” Narumi whispered in disatisfaction to Yuuichirou, who shut his eyes and nudged Narumi in the arm.
“This war isn’t over.” Shinoa broke the silence, as she had begun to back up. She screamed on top of her lungs, the kids echoing after her.
“One! Two! Three! Four! We declare color wars!”
Mikaela and Shinoa throw their balloons, Narumi and Yuuichirou dodge them.
The kids scream and start throwing their water balloons.
It was soon until the fight had moved to the outside, where the teams chased each other with a largely vast space for themselves.
As there was yelling that circled them, fast paced footsteps splurges of water and popped balloons - Yuuichirou wasn’t going to let Mikaela out of his sight this time.
He can admit, he was fast - but not if Yuuichirou cornered him.
The main battlegrounds, Narumi directed the kids to coordinate attacks on Shinoa - he was able to sneak away and catch Mikaela off guard.
“I have you now!” He grinned devilishly, arms encircling Mikaela’s waist slamming a balloon against Mikaela’s side.
Mikaela let out a shriek, the cold water wetting up the fabric of his staff shirt.
Around them - everyone hurled their water balloons at each other.
Yuuichirou turned Mikaela around, the two of them face to face.
“Any last words before the green team smokes the rest of you?” Yuuichirou said, tone dripping with brashness.
Mikaela’s lips hovered over Yuuichirou’s.
“Keep your head in the game. Wise guy.” He whispered with a hard shove. Yuuichirou barely registers he’s been made bait when Mikaela called for his team to attack.
It’s a matter of seconds before Yuuichirou is battered with water balloons.
Fuck. Yuuichirou let himself get played again.
Shinoa had gotten most of the green team, and Narumi was bombarded - but now that the leader has been hit, the game was over.
Mikaela and Shinoa’s team roared with cheers.
Yuuichirou lied flat on the grass ground, and his back slightly ached. It didn’t help the fact thaat he was completely drenched.
A hand was extended to him.
“Good game.” Mikaela bent down, a warm smile reappearing on his face. But when did Mikaela not smile?
“Thanks.” Yuuichirou rose, taking Mikaela’s hand.
“Oh dear.” Mikaela folded his arms, “We should probably take the kids back to their cabins to dry, we can’t afford to let them get cold.”
“Yeah, good idea.” Yuuichirou stepped over the fallen logs with flattened balloons and the remnants filled the premise.
“Everyone, you did a great job today! Even if we lost, there’s still plenty of more to come.”
Even though his campers are sulking - there’s a select few demon spawns that appear quite irritated over their loss.
“Now you don’t get to kiss Mika.” Narumi made a point, as Mikaela and Shinoa rounded up their campers. “But you still got to stare at his ass and see him in a wet shirt. That’s pretty boner inducing.”
“Boner?” Kei asked. “What’s that?”
“Oh Christ-” Yuuichirou expels, “God damn it Narumi-!”
“I thought my name was Squidward.”
Yuuichirou needed to go to the break room.
It’s just a kiss.
Just a kiss.
Over the past few days, they’ve gone back to back - all colors of each teams engaging in the wars, and each time him and Mikaela competing - they were either tied, or Mikaela managing to get in the lead.
They had gone from Shark and Minnows to kayak racing, both fairly a bit too intense than how normally these activities would be executed.
(“Maybe a way to win would've been saying, fishy fishy come into my ocean if your name is Mika.”
“Don't be a dick.”
“ Don't you admit I'm a genius?”
Yuuichirou stared at Narumi as he speculated the seaweed of children in the middle and the sharks waiting to attack their prey.
“Sorta.” He mumbled, looking at the cheerful, enthusiastic look on Mikaela’s face.
He wished he had that advantage.)
As a benefit, he had gotten to fish and kayak alone with Mikaela, a few times - taking a dip into the pool where Yuuichirou had the honor and the excuse to wet Mikaela up just for kicks.
Their campers continued to spy on them.
And even though it was competition - Yuuichirou promised he would avoid letting himself get frustrated.
The talent show Shinya announced next, Yuuichirou called himself silly for trying so hard.
He wanted to flip over a table finding out that the corny magic tricks he practiced with his campers landed him in third place, meanwhile the red team - Kimizuki and Shuusaku, beat them for fucking knock knock jokes.
Yoichi and Akane's amazing duet should've topped them both.
Mikaela and Shinoa were the spotlight of the whole damn thing, and he’s sure that Mahiru may have just teared up, and Yuuichirou may have just fell in love even more with someone so incredible that he couldn’t even win a kiss from.
They went with a cheerleader themed dance. Strutting to the stage with D.A.N.C.E on the speakers with cartwheels and flips that already had mouths instantly dropped open lip syncing to the lyrics.
The two choreographing together was unbelievably unreal - Yuuichirou may have drooled when Mikaela winked at the crowd, hips moving in such a way Mahiru absolutely did not give two shits on whether it was exactly appropriate on camp grounds.
They take the trophy in a heartbeat when they bounce backwards to allow the campers to enter the stage and bust a few moves, before they built various pyramids during the bridge of the song.
(“You look like you’re looking at a wet dream come to life.” Kimizuki jested. Yuuichirou was too immersed to come up with a remark in response.
“Yeah.”
“I dunno, but I admit, it’s pretty fuckin’ good.”
“Yeah.”
“That wink back there was probably, I’d go with definitely not for you.”
“Yeah.”)
Nearing the end of color wars, the last game was said to be capture the flag - and to kick back, there was a gathering at the campfire after dark.
Laughter filled the air, a few beers were shared and bottles clanked together.
Yuuichirou’s mind is buzzed up after his second bottle, talking about their experience at camp the past few weeks to talking nonsense.
Or, whatever they’re talking about - Yuuichirou’s not really listening. Staring at Mikaela speak with Akane intently about their favorite campers and how one of them liked to sit in his lap.
“She made me her first lanyard bracelet.”
“Really? That’s so sweet!”
“She always had trouble making them so I give credit to you for teaching her.” Mikaela held up the second bracelet on her wrist.
“She’s been practicing a lot.” Akane smiles. “Lord thank God you don’t have to deal with the little boys who make ones shittier than this.”
They both giggle.
Shinoa’s asking Kimizuki to tell more knock knock jokes, Yoichi scooting closer to feed him marshmallows - Narumi talking animatedly about something while Shuusaku silently listens with a smile. Mitsuba grumbles at her burnt marshmallow.
“I think you should stick to s’mores.” Lacus teased. “It seems like every marshmallow you roast seems to look like shit.”
“Seconded.” Rene agreed, as he ate his without complaint.
“This is stupid.” Mitsuba twirled her stick. “Why can't this roast properly without burning?”
“Let me help you.” Lacus offered.
Everyone talks.
Yuuichirou watches Mikaela gnaw on a s’more.
“That’s a pretty dope bracelet.” He complimented. Setting down his beer bottle. He noticed Mikaela looking at it as Akane scooted closer to the others to listen to Kimizuki’s knock knock jokes.
“I know.” Mikaela retrieved another s’more, “How come you’re so quiet? You seemed to be having a blast telling us about your magic tricks earlier.” He feeds it to Yuuichirou, who willingly opened his mouth to have a taste.
“I just think my dollar trick should’ve won first place.”
Mikaela’s shoulders shake, briefly - as he leaned on Yuuichirou’s shoulder. He bit into his s’more as well.
“That’s still a bonus added to your paycheck.”
“Not enough.” Yuuichirou quipped, “Just kiddin’, got somethin’ else on my mind is all. Sorry for spacin’ out.”
Mikaela hummed. “Homesick?”
“My family’s practically here. I’m bedsick.”
Mikaela cackled. “We have beds here.”
“All jokes aside,” Yuuichirou swallowed, “We’ve been back to back and something’s telling me I’m not gonna win that kiss, which would really fucking suck.”
“Yuu-chan, you’re a good fighter.” Mikaela assured him, “You know how to put up a good fight. And I really like that determination in you.”
“And you don’t think it’s silly that I’m moping over the fact that I’ll possibly fail to win a kiss?” Yuuichirou asked stubbornly.
Mikaela pushed the remainder of his s’more into his mouth, chewing. “If you want it that bad,” He swallows first, “You’ve gotta fight for it. All’s fair in love and war.”
“All’s fair in love and war.” Yuuichirou repeated, “And the demon spawns we call children.”
Mikaela downed his drying throat with beer. Choking on a laugh. “You’ve got a point.”
“They all we talk shit about, anyway.” Yuuichirou shrugged with a snort, “But thanks, Mika. That makes me really feel fucking great for my efforts, my campers really want that kiss, if that wasn’t obvious enough.”
“I think everyone’s does at this point.” Mikaela stared ahead of the smoldering fire before them, Yuuichirou notices the others starting clean up as it was getting late out.
“I’ll give you a peace offering,” Mikaela offered. “Out of pity.” He laughed.
“Yeah?” Yuuichirou quirked a brow, as Mikaela feeded him the last s’more.
“Walk me to my cabin first.” Mikaela proposed.
Their walk is a bit delayed trying to spot fireflies and swatting away at mosquitoes - grass crunching beneath their feet, but Yuuichirou still earns a cheek kiss.
“For your efforts.” Mikaela said that’s what they were for.
Sharing smiles, Yuuichirou desperately wanted a bonus, because he was selfish like that.
That’s when the bushes rustle somewhere in the distance, exchanging of a few words - Mikaela covers his mouth to stifle a laugh, both of their cheeks reddening when a few of the campers are hiding in the bushes, a glimpse of purple hair could be seen.
Yuuichirou picked up a stick and chased after them.
(“Good night, Yuu-chan!”
“Sorry about my dickhole friends. But I’ll see you tomorrow for sure.”
“No worries, just don’t kill them.”
“Oh yeah, I’m gonna fucking kill them.")
They're down to the final game.
It's apparent that the blue and green team were head to head. On the leading scoreboard, if either team had scored a final point to break their tie then they’d score victory.
“This game isn't like any other game.” Yuuichirou explained with sincerity. “If we lose, the title goes to the other team. And you know what that means?”
“Yuuichirou doesn't get his kiss.” Narumi deadpanned. “And to avoid pretentious sulking I would rather you do everyone a favor and get these two to smooch.”
“I would rather you phrased that differently…” Yuuichirou scratched his cheek, clearing his throat.
“But yeah, you've need to give it all you've got to represent this team. We all do.”
“We’re gonna win for sure!” Taichi said determinedly.
“Mister Yuu likes Mister Mika and Mister Mika likes Mister Yuu.”
“Well of course! They're married!”
“That's why we need them to kiss!”
“But we also should plan their wedding first!”
Narumi snorted. “Your campers are the wedding planners .”
“I didn't even agree to this, but!” Yuuichirou raised his voice, “Good idea! I'll let you guys leave it to that once we win! Now put all that excitement and high spirits to your motivation.”
“But first, we’re not gonna run into this blindly like all the other times.” Narumi huddled the group together. “Let’s strategize.”
Both teams had a good fifteen minutes to plan out how to take the flag from the other team’s base.
Narumi suggests a vote.
The campers settled on an ambush attack. As the blue team relied on stealth tactics, they had an upper hand when the game started.
Campers protected each base in the fields of their playing grounds, today - thank God - there was some breeze under the cool air, some shade under the trees.
“MOVE OUT!”
Screaming filled the air as the campers dispersed. Yuuichirou crept around the premise.
The first ambush hadn't gone well as the blue team’s campers were quick.
They had taken the first round catching them by surprise. So they needed to one up their game.
Shinoa and Mikaela were prideful.
“Ready to surrender?”
“Not to the likes of you.”
There's still time. Mikaela sensed his determination and said nothing in response, smiling before he jogged back to his campers.
“Lets see if you can top us next round!” Shinoa challenged.
During the next ambush, before Mikaela or Shinoa could direct their campers to the base, Kei, Chihiro, and Ako busted through to grab the blue flag running as fast as they can away from the ambush back to their base, everyone from the green team cheering them on.
It's the final round where the teams clash, most were tagged and the flags were securely shielded.
Taichi had tripped to the ground in attempt to grab the flag, the blue team’s campers sprinting their way towards him.
“Come on! Pick it up!” The campers urged, this was going to be the final straw.
Taichi snatched the flag from the base, standing up on his two feet to make a mad dash for the green team’s base.
Yuuichirou coaxed him to keep running as Shinoa was tailing him, crossing the entrance to their base grounds.
Cheering in victory, they've won.
Yuuichirou felt his adrenaline pumping, elation that bubbled up with him as his campers ran up to both him and Narumi, tackling them with hugs.
Stumbling back, the campers huddle them up, tiny arms thrown around them.
“Good job, guys.” Yuuichirou is grinning so much that it hurt.
Shinoa and Mikaela opted to help them up and wrangle them out of the children’s grasps.
“Guess this calls for an immediate drawback into our coalition?” Shinoa offered, “We’re no longer enemies anymore as you've officially kicked our butts.”
“You guys know how to fight like true warriors.” Yuuichirou commended.
“Only learn from the best.” Mikaela removed his hand from Yuuichirou’s.
“Your campers are ninjas.” Narumi muttered, and that made the three counselors laugh. “When do the lessons start?”
“I wanna be a ninja!”
“You already are a warrior, there's no need to heed anymore skills.”
“But you're fast, Mika. I can give you that.” Yuuichirou says, Kei tugged on Yuuichirou’s shirt, holding onto Mikaela’s hand.
“Does this mean you guys are married again?”
“Why did you let him give you cooties?!”
“They're in love, kids.” Shinoa told them without hesitation. “No one cares about cooties when they're in love.”
Yuuichirou blushed furiously. Mikaela giggling.
“We can finally plan the wedding!”
“Oh?” Shinoa quirked a brow, smirking. “Now this is interesting.”
Laughing sheepishly, Yuuichirou admitted this was something arranged against his will. But Mikaela didn't seem to mind.
There was an after party at the conclusion of color wars. Outside.
It was evening time, after lunch, the campers were lead outside by the counselors. Bubble blowers were distributed for the smaller children, running about the grassy fields near the cabins and campfire blowing a copious amount of bubbles.
Yayoi said they were stashed away in the storage, Mahiru thinking it was the right time for the kids to use them, after all they had free time on their hands.
The directors and supervisors were having a picnic outside. The counselors were granted the privilege to play any free for all games with the children, this time - no competition between the campers.
As the smoldering campfire, sparks from the blaze rose into the air - they were followed by bubbles.
As much as Yuuichirou had fun engaging in fun activities with his campers, he noticed that Mikaela was all over the place with his kids dragging him everywhere.
Yuuichirou decides to let them play their own games as he watched the kickback unfold around him, speakers brought outside to blast the occasional pop music, a warm feeling filled Yuuichirou’s chest. Everyone jumping, dancing, and laughing.
He liked it here to some extent - but now, eyes landing on the screaming children, Shinya and Sayuri blowing bubbles together in Guren’s face, Mito, Shigure, Mahiru, and Goshi laughing their heads off - Kimizuki smiling as he chased after the kids, Shinoa giving a child a piggyback ride as Narumi and Shuusaku were tackled by their own.
He could get used to this.
He liked it here even more.
“Yuu-chan!”
Mikaela ran towards him, jumping and throwing his arms around Yuuichirou, and it's safe to say he wasn't cognizant of Mikaela’s presence in time - returning the hug regardless. Mikaela was always a hug person.
“Did you drink too much of the Apple juice?” Yuuichirou asked lightly, as he lowered Mikaela to the ground.
“A little bit.” Mikaela confessed, “But I can't blame myself, I'm just really happy.”
“Yeah?” Yuuichirou popped a nearby bubble. “I forgot to mention that we have pretty good times here.”
The games. The meddling kids. The pranks. Mosquitoes. And all the summer fun. “ This is where it's at.”
“This is the most fun I've ever had, everyone is so nice and lovely, I can't believe our time here's already ending so soon.” Mikaela looked around to watch the bubbles that floated in the air. Encompassing them.
“To us winning color wars, by the way.” Yuuichirou says, “Though, it's okay if you've forgotten about our terms.”
He was kinda bummed out to admit that.
“A coup de grace is enough to strength our coalition once again.” Mikaela stepped closer. “Therefore, I haven't forgotten about our terms, silly. I've agreed to them and kept an oath. But." He began.
"But?" Yuuichirou corked a brow.
"Only on one condition. For you earning it with your hard work.” Mikaela explained.
“What is it?” Yuuichirou asked, his heart pounding in his chest.
“You have to kiss me first.” Mikaela said.
Yuuichirou frowned. “But I thought you were supposed to give me the kiss-”
Mikaela shakes his head lightly, “Does it matter? Otherwise, you'd like to make amends to our peace treaty a different way.”
Yuuichirou shrugged. “Well then I'll be glad to oblige.” He smiled charmingly, stepping forward to lean in. Hesitantly, his nose brushed against Mikaela's.
Mikaela is the first to close his eyes, parting his lips. Yuuichirou followed shortly, their lips merely hovering before he closed the distance between them.
If anything - Mikaela’s lips warm and pliant against his, was the best experience Yuuichirou has ever had.
Their real first kiss, and it wasn't a cheek kiss this time, but it was awesome. Bubbles that breezed past in their surroundings, Mikaela’s body molded to his briefly to slot their lips together - hands framing Yuuichirou’s cheeks and Yuuichirou grasping Mikaela’s hips as he tilted his head.
It's kept innocent and chaste, as they both desired to keep it that way. Basking in the warmth of the new discovered feeling.
They're too caught up in the moment to notice when the campers start to cheer and applaud with delight, all of the other joining in at the sight.
At last, romance that sparked between them was in the air. Yuuichirou thinks he could sense it. Overjoyed.
Parting, Yuuichirou is the first to grin, returning Mikaela’s smile resting their foreheads against one another.
They're separated when the campers come rushing towards them to give them hugs, jealous they weren't getting any attention since they've snuck away from their campers.
Yuuichirou didn't mind it one bit, getting to see the bright smile on Mikaela’s face was surely worth it, as he ruffled their hairs and placed his hands on their shoulders.
Bubbles rose in the sky, looking up at the stars forming as the shrouded clouds were clearing out - Yuuichirou didn't want this night to end.
In a month and a half, the time to leave Camp Moon Demon has come.
It's hard to be aware of the many memories placed here when in the middle of living them.
There was a final night, a cheers and sharing of more beers at the last campfire.
In the morning was there tears and hugs were shared.
They all made lanyard bracelets to acknowledge the bond they've formed. Raising it in the air during sunset.
Everyone shouted "we are the crew of Camp Moon Demon!" - and it had felt incredibly good to yell out stupid things. In the spur of the moment, they were living life to the fullest, anyway. Or as Yuuichirou supposed, something like that.
Guren nearly said he considered the counselors as his children. That's when everyone started to speculate if he was exactly okay.
All the campers were so content with their stay surprisingly none had cried of homesickness, but if they weren't crying then - they were crying now.
Comforting them and their parents for pulling their kids from the premise was a rough time for sure. A lot sent the returning counselor gifts for making their children have such a good time here.
Yuuichirou’s own were small cellophane bags of candy placed in a basket, acknowledging him for being one of their favorite counselors.
They wouldn't regret the next summer and the one after that at Camp Moon Demon.
The registration desks were filled for the majority of the day, until sunset - after everything has been cleared out, it was time for packing.
Yuuichirou and Mikaela’s planned “wedding” was scheduled a few days before the last day of camp, where flower crowns were placed on their heads and a ring made of twig was placed on their finger with a dandelion replaced for a real jewel.
The campers threw flowers on their heads.
Shinoa orchestrated the wedding, of course. And it was nearly treated as if it were a real one.
(“Will you promise to wear your lanyard bracelets and faithfully love each other?”
“Is that even how it goes?”
“Do I look like the fucking wedding expert to you? Put the damn fake twigs around your finger and smooch each other already.”
“This wedding is a mess.” Yuuichirou whispered to Mikaela, who fixed Yuuichirou’s flower crown.
“As long as the kids are happy.” He says sheepishly.)
Guren teased suggesting Yuuichirou should give last words to Mikaela after he said goodbye to Akane - as the newlyweds needed their privacy.
Yuuichirou told him to shut up.
“So, this is it.”
“Yeah.”
“We won’t be able to see each other for two months despite the fact that we were just wedded by our campers.” Mikaela quipped.
“We can arrange something.” Yuuichirou promised,
“For sure, you just live an hour away, right?”
“I mean, this was all make-believe…”
“But there's still plenty of time to come down and see you.”
They held hands and kissed once during the final campfire. They're going at a slow pace, more like it was just kiddie love - but Yuuichirou enjoyed every second of it.
“You're silly.”
“I know, but I'm proud to be. Hopefully your mom likes me because I would very much like to meet her too.”
Mikaela laughed. “Then I give you permission to, though I don't know what she would think when I tell her that I got married at camp.”
“I’d be fucking ecstatic.”
Mikaela’s smile faded, staring at Yuuichirou with sentiment that pooled in his eyes.
He's silent.
“It's been really fun.”
“Hell yeah it has.”
Yuuichirou knew what was coming.
“Mika. Stop.”
Mikaela shakes his head. His eyes watered.
“ Stop.”
“No!” Mikaela refused.
Yuuichirou opened his arms. Rolling his eyes.
“Alright. Come on, reel it in.”
Mikaela enveloped him in a crushing hug.
“I'm gonna miss you guys.” He whispered. “You guys are so silly but I love you all.”
“Don't worry, though we’ll be seeing each other next summer - there's still plenty of time for us to hang out. Like this time, just us - no annoying spawns of Satan breathing down our backs.”
“Are you sure?”
Yuuichirou winced when Mikaela squeezes him tighter.
“Yeah.”
“Promise?”
“Promise.”
The horn honked. Alarming Yuuichirou and Mikaela.
“COME ON!” Guren hollered from the truck where everyone was seated inside. “I'm not opting to drive you all back to town for nothing. ”
“There's my dad. He's an asshole but, he's offering to drive us home since Mahiru and Shinya and the others already left.”
“Oh jeez.” They pulled away. Mikaela breathing out.
“Sounds like he's going to murder you if you don't go.”
“He won't do shit.” Yuuichirou bluffed.
“I'LL LEAVE YOU!”
“Oh and by the way?” Narumi opened the door to call out, “There's no space for you in here so you better take the last available spot quick.”
Yuuichirou gave them all the finger.
Another car pulled up, Mikaela turned around - them both catching a glimpse of pink hair, the window opening.
“I hope you packed your shit Mikaela!” Her shades are revealed when she shouted out, a lollipop in her mouth.
“Hi mom!” Mikaela exclaimed excitedly.
“I think I already want to be her son in law.”
Mikaela snorted, “Silly.” He ruffled Yuuichirou’s hair. “So I'll see you soon?”
Yuuichirou jogged over to the trunk of Guren’s truck, where their stuff were stacked on top of.
“Yeah, definitely!”
The truck started to move shortly after, Shinoa screamed out a second goodbye to Mikaela.
Yuuichirou sat back on an empty space, surprised when he sees Mikaela speeding back towards the truck.
He doesn't anticipate when Mikaela grabs Yuuichirou’s collar to softly press their lips together.
“I just realized I forgot to give my phone number,” He whispered quickly, retrieving a pen tucked into his pocket to grab Yuuichirou’s arm and write down the digits.
“Call me.”
“I'll make a note of that.” Yuuichirou kissed Mikaela’s hands, “I'll see you soon, beautiful.”
As soon as the truck began to pick up speed, the distance between him and Mikaela grew greater.
He watched Mikaela go into his car, and he waved wildly - staring at the written digits in beautiful handwriting on his arm.
Yuuichirou never grinned so wide that his cheeks were hurting.
Someone had blasted a music inside the truck, feeling daring - Yuuichirou stood up and climbed to the front of the trunk - throwing both of his hands in the air.
He screamed on the top of his lungs.
“ BEST SUMMER EVER!”
Shinoa and Narumi grinned, Yoichi smiling - while Kimizuki and Guren facepalmed. Shuusaku simply laughed.
“You better stop screaming and standing on my damn trunk!”
“Sorry!” Yuuichirou bent down, not that he could help it. The rush of the moment had his blood pumping through his veins.
He shifted to face ahead at the back of the truck, placing a kiss on two fingers and saluting out to the sight of their camp becoming smaller and smaller.
“We’ll meet again.” He promised, and he was sure of it. More excited than ever for the next summer.
