Work Text:

they're at a little trinket store. jungkook's living room can accommodate the whole store. it's crowded with shelves lining all the walls and arranged in rows on the floor, trinkets on every single available surface. nothing's dusty, however. it's all well maintained and the air is clean. jungkook's thankful that he can breathe at the very least.

the only reason he's here is because namjoon had asked him to come along, anyway. otherwise, he hates small spaces.

namjoon has this… fascination with odd little trinkets, and so they hunt down little stores for him to buy stuff from. stuff, which included a practically useless crab figure he'd gotten just because "it's tiny and it's a crab and therefore i must have it." and another tiny porcelain teaset because "it's so tiny, jungkook! it's so cute and tiny and it'll be perfect for my little crabby to have tea with."

namjoon says he's too irresponsible to raise an actual living creature. jungkook tells him he's raised jungkook just fine. namjoon gives him a smile bright enough to knock him out.

today though, he seems dead set on getting one specific thing.

jungkook has no clue what it is, but it's amusing seeing namjoon try to fit his beanstalk self into tiny spaces to dig around in the little baskets and to look around on the shelves to find a particular something. jungkook stands back and makes small talk with the owner of the shop, a delightful old man who shows jungkook his grandchildren's photos as a greeting.

about twenty minutes later, namjoon emerges victorious, one hand raised in a fist. he asks jungkook to wait as he pays (as if jungkook hadn't been waiting already). he doesn't show jungkook what it is that he was so keen about getting, but jungkook just shrugs that off, deciding namjoon would tell him if need be.

and sure enough, he does. two weeks later, he does.

"remember that time a few days ago when we went to the store with the grandpa?" namjoon asks jungkook as they're walking along the busy road.

it's a winter evening. people are returning home from the dreadful cold outside to warmth, whether it be of love or of a heater.

"yeah?" jungkook looks up at namjoon- and oh. there's snow caught on his lashes. jungkook's hands itch to reach out and dust it off, but he lets it be. it's pretty.

"what i bought was actually for you." namjoon's cheeks seem to be dusted pink from reasons other than the cold.

"oh?" jungkook breathes. "for me? what was it?" he tilts his head to a side, curious.

"here," namjoon says as he hands jungkook a little drawstring pouch. "it's this."

namjoons dimples comes to light as he flashes a smile. jungkook's hands shake in excitement as he opens the little bag and shakes its contents into his hand. two little seashells tumble onto his palm.

two little pink seashell earrings.

"oh," he breathes, again.

"you mentioned missing the sea, and i thought the soft pink suited you because it's kinda like the color of your aura- wait that's not coherent enough-"

"i like them." jungkook grins. "they're cute."

"oh." namjoon inhales. "that's good then."

jungkook and namjoon wear matching dimples as they walk home. jungkook puts in the earrings the next day and decides that yes, these are indeed the cutest things he owns. they remind him of home- both old and new. old being the comfort of the ocean, new being namjoon and his warmth and kindness.

his heart soars a little.
