Chapter Text
*rumble rumble
The low rumble of thunder surprised Junghyun as he exited the jewelry shop. He looked up and saw half of the sky was shining bright with sunlight, but the other half showed dark rain clouds slowly but steadily looming in. The weather had called for thunderstorms in the late evening, though it was only 2:00.
He hurried to his car as the wind had started to pick up slightly. Once safely in his car, he started it and turned on the seat warmers. Even though it was April, and it was a decent temperature outside, having the seat warmers on just helps soothe and relax him.
Before pulling out of the parking lot to go run his next errand, he pulled out the small velvet box from the bag of the jewelry shop he just came from. He opened it up and in it, 2 small silver rings started back at him.
Junghyun inhaled deeply, “Oh my god, I can’t believe I just bought these.”
He thought out loud with the feelings of nervousness and excitement swirling around inside him.
*rumble rumble
Junghyun looks outside his car window and sees the dark clouds are now almost completely over him. He curses softly under his breath. The storm was moving quickly, and he was hoping to be done with his errands before the rain hit. Driving in the rain always made him anxious.
Junghyun buckled his seatbelt, and then put the car in reverse. He looked to make sure it was clear and then backed out of the parking spot. Now that he picked up the rings, all he had had left to do was run to the laundromat and pick up his clothes and go to the store to pick up some food to make dinner tonight.
While driving, he pressed the voice command button on his steering wheel.
“Call Nari”, he voice commanded.
The car was then filled with the sound of the phone ringing. He was in the middle of changing lanes when he heard the phone click through.
“Hello?”
“Hey babe, what’s up?”
He heard his girlfriend shuffling through the phone.
“I’m just getting ready to go meet Hyejin and Chae for coffee. What are you up too? You’ve been out of the house all day.”
Him and Nari met in college and have been dating ever since. They moved in together last year and they are approaching their 5-year anniversary.
“Just running some errands.” He smiled smugly, if only she knew he has been planning on proposing the last couple months.
“I’m about to go to the grocery store to pick up some food for dinner now. Be careful driving, it’s about to pour down rain any second.”
“I will, don’t worry babe, you know I’m a great driver.” Junghyun could practically hear the smile in her voice.
“It’s not you I don’t trust Nari, it's other people. People are such crazy and insane drivers nowadays. Plus driving in the middle of a thunderstorm isn’t technically good driving weather.”
Junghyun turned right at the stoplight he approached just as it started to drizzle lightly.
“I know and I love you for worrying about me, but I promise I will be careful. I gotta go now though, I love you.”
“I love you too.” Junghyun smiled and the line went dead.
Nari was one of the best things that ever happened to him. He smiled every time he thought about her and was always thinking of ways just to see her smile and her beautiful brown eyes sparkle. Nari was truly his euphoria. He looked down at the velvet box and prayed she would say yes.
After the call with Nari, he suddenly had an idea pop into his head and decided to call his little brother. He pressed the voice command button again.
“Call little brother”
As the phone rang, Junghyun saw the stoplight he was nearing turn yellow and slowly pressed the brakes on the car as he knew he wouldn’t be able to make the light.
“I’m sorry the person you are trying to reach is unavailable, please leave a mess-...”
Junghyun hung up the phone and sighed. He was aware that Jungkook was wrapping up a tour right now, but he had just assumed that he would be able to talk to the younger a little before his concert. He’s not too upset or disappointed though, he will just have to call him later.
By the time he finished all his errands and returned to his apartment, Nari was still out with her friends. Junghyun exhaled in relief. This means he had some time to find a hiding spot for the rings.
He quickly unloaded and put away the groceries and set the clothes he got from the laundromat on his bed. He looked around the room, face scrunched up in thought.
“Okay, now where is somewhere I know Nari won’t look?”
He looked around their room. He doesn’t want to be cliché and hide them in his sock drawer. Plus, there is a chance that Nari could look there since they do each other’s laundry sometimes. He doesn’t trust any spot in the bathroom since Nari has stuff in all the drawers in there. He walked into their closet, looked around, and then walked back out when he heard his phone ding. It was a text from Nari.
Nari: Hey Hyunie, are you back home yet? I should be home in about 15 minutes!
Oh crap, he was running out of time. He ran his hand through his hair and BAM ! That’s when it hit him.
He ran to the kitchen and opened the utensil drawer and placed the velvet ring box toward the very back. He loves Nari with his whole heart, but she cannot cook to save her life. Although, she has gotten a whole lot better since they first met. On one of their first dates together, she had somehow managed to burn ramen. It’s a memory that Junghyun will always laugh at even if Nari always gets embarrassed by it.
Once the rings were in a safe place, he texted Nari back.
Jugnhyun: Yep! I’m back home. Come home quickly, I miss you <3
Since it was Saturday and neither of them had to work, they spent the rest of their day in each other’s arms. Nari attempted to help Junghyun with dinner, but when she nearly charred the fried rice they were making, she settled for just back hugging him the whole time Junghyun was cooking.
After they ate, they cuddled on the couch and binged watched a kdrama they both had recently gotten into. It was nearing 12:15am when Nari looked up at Junghyun from where she was snuggled into him with big pleading eyes.
“Hyunnieeee?” Nari dragged out his name in a cute manner as if she wanted something.
“What’s up hun?”
“You know how much I love you right?” Nari said with a smile on her face.
“Yes and I love you so much too babe.” Hyun said kissing the top of her head.
“Well…since you love me so much….can you please run to the store real fast and get me some cookies and cream ice cream?” Nari asked with big puppy dog eyes.
Junghyun fell for those eyes every time, hook, line, and sinker.
Junghyun chuckled lightly and nodded, “Sure, I could go for some ice cream myself.”
“YAYYY thank you baby I love you so much!!” Nari yelled excitedly while kissing her boyfriend on the cheek repeatedly.
“Yeah yeah, you're just lucky the store is only like 5 minutes away.”
Junghyun got up from the couch and made his way to the door where his shoes were and put them on. He took his keys and coat off the rack.
“Alright I’ll be back soon! Don’t watch the next episode without me!”
“Okay Love you!
“Love you too!”
Thankfully, since the storm had come earlier, it wasn’t raining anymore, but the roads were still wet and there were big puddles everywhere. Usually, the store is 5 minutes away, if you hit all the green lights on the way there. If you didn’t, it usually was about a 10-15 minute drive. And unfortunately, he was hitting every stop light. Nari was lucky this store was open 24 hours…and that he loved her.
It was when the stoplight he was approaching turned yellow he decided to try and call his little brother again and pressed the voice command button.
“Call little brother”
The sound of the phone ringing filled the car as he came to a stop at the red light.
“I’m sorry. The person you are trying to reach right now is unavailable. Please leave a message after the beep.”
A part of Junghyun knew Jungkook wouldn’t pick up, but he decided to leave a message anyway.
………..
The light turned green and he pressed on the gas.
“…call me back soon kook! I feel like we haven’t talked in a while and I miss you a lot…”
BBEEEEEEEEEPPPPP
Junghyun didn’t even have time to think when he looked up and saw a car speeding toward him.
CRASSHHH
