Work Text:

Sakura ignored the knocking on her door, quietly scribbling the formula that would form the basis of her thesis. She informed almost the entire hospital  that she was not to be disturbed and whoever it was would leave anyway when she didn’t respond. Plus, very few people were brave enough to face the anger of the Godaime’s apprentice.

She tapped the butt of her pen against her head, trying to figure out the next step in this solution when the twist of the metal doorknob caught her attention. Eyebrows scrunched up in frustration and she was ready to sermon whoever dared to disrupt her concentration when her eyes met playful black.

Shisui .

She sighed and buried her head back into the paper and drawings, snubbing the now pouting Uchiha.

Undeterred at the lack of greeting, Shisui leaned against the now open door, silently observing the room’s only occupant. From what he’d been told, she’s locked herself in this “research room” - what everyone coined the broom closet sized unused space that Sakura commandeered - for at least a week now, only going out for a quick meal and then a shower at the hospital’s employee shower rooms probably every few days.

“Not even a hello? After I was gone for such a long mission?” He feigned a hurt tone at the question, knowing distracting her from her research would irritate her further.

“You’re here. You’re not wounded. Welcome back. Goodbye.” The response was clipped and to the point laced with a hint of warning not to push his luck. But Shisui was never one to heed warnings. No, he was the type of person to continue poking a tiger when it was ready to bite off his head.

So he leaned over behind her and deftly pulled her pen from her hand while she was writing, putting a finger against her lips when she started forming his name in a shout.

“Now now...is that how a respectable medic should act? After all, I’m only worried about your health.” Teasing smile and twinkling eyes clashed with fiery jade.

“Do you know who I learned from? You should be worried about your health by the time I’m through with you.”

“Ah, talking about your master, I was told to inform you that you are on vacation and not allowed in the hospital grounds for the next week. Starting Today. Effective Immediately.”

“WHA-”

The word was barely out of her mouth when Shisui took advantage of her shock, lifted her in his arms, and used shunshin to rush them out of the hospital. Sakura wrapped her arms around his neck to stabilise herself, squeezing it slightly tighter than needed as a warning so he knew what to expect the moment he let her go.

The scenery swept past them in a blur, whites and browns and greens all melding together in a sea of color until they suddenly stopped.

Sakura was carefully let down, feet lightly tapping against the wooden flooring. The familiar walls of her home surrounded her and the layer of dust tickled her nose into a flurry of sneezes.

“See. If you actually came home every once in a while, the place may not be this dusty.” Shisui chuckled, but had to wheeze after some particles made its way down his throat.

“You were saying?” A smug look made its way onto Sakura’s face for a while before she took a look around her. Patting down the crinkles on her clothes and re-doing her ponytail, she moved to the kitchen and grabbed herself a cup of water, taking out a can of iced lemon tea from the fridge for her kidnapper.

She drank from the cup, while pushing the bottle towards Shisui, nodding absently at his coarse “thank you”. She waited until he finished his drink and cleared his throat before asking a meaning-filled “Well?”

“Well what?” Shisui was ready to drag out this entire conversation for as long as possible but Sakura crossing her arms was a sign to quickly backtrack. It never boded well for the other party when she was pissed enough to do her “I will break your everything” pose.

“Yeah so.... Hokage-sama approved your vacation.”

“I never applied for vacation.” Uh oh, she was tapping her foot now.

“Okay…I asked for it and she approved. We’re off for the next week and are not expected back till the week after.”

“Shisui! You can’t just…” She couldn’t even get the words out. The audacity of …

“We’re going on a trip to the land of Tea.” Shisui blurted out before she could even think of forming fists to punch him with. “It’s the annual tea harvest, remember?”

That caused her to pause, harkening back to a cozy dinner out, a tasting at the quaint village tea house, and a softly whispered “I wish we could go one day” exchanged between the two of them.

The tension released from her shoulders and a soft smile flirted at her lips, causing Shisui to also relax and move forward to gather her in his arms.

“You should have asked me first.” The mumbled admonishment got caught in his shirt as she buried her face at the warmth of his chest.

“Where’s the surprise in that?” His goal was to tease but the words came out as a breathy whisper against her ear instead, making her shiver at the tickling sensation. Though it didn’t stop her from pinching him in rebuke. “Alright. Alright. I’ll ask next time. So, do you still want to go?”

She let him suffer for a beat, enjoying the tightening of his arms around her, before nodding against his shoulder.

“Sure. After all, it’s been a while since we’ve gone on a vacation outside of the village.” She reluctantly pulled herself out of his embrace and made her way towards the bedroom to pack, leaving him with one last line.

“Make sure to grab the scroll in my office, I want to be able to access it just in case.”

Shisui gave a resigned sigh and stretched, getting ready to shunshin back to the hospital. Who knew it would be so hard to get some alone time with his wife? But he wasn’t about to let her get the last word.

“No problem. As long as you shower before we go. Wouldn’t want to kill the animals on the way over!”
