Chapter Text
I entered in the hogwarts express not very happy, but still kept a smile. My parents looked at me as the doors closed, my mother with a raised eyebrow telling me to do what she had entrusted to me, well, not to me, to fate and to all the gods that exist and to anyone that listened to her and could do something about it.
I came from a family not very different from the rest in the day, the only difference would be that they (my parents) did not bother to hide it, like the sweet Malfoys.
And no, it's not sarcasm, they were really sweet, except for Uncle Lucius who always seemed to have a pencil stuck in his anus, who, however, treated me well occasionally, what child does not love sweets or the newest toys on the market?
aunt Narcissa always played with me and we took walks in her large gardens. Draco did not like that I was so close to his mother, he felt that he was being displaced...or so my mom used to say, explaining why he did all those things with him too.
Yeah, I never called him Cousin Draco, it was forbidden. Turns out Uncle Lucius was obsessed with a pure and medievally lineage between the Malfoys and my parents, the Whitemarks, plotted for us to marry and have children totally and completely pure. Aunt Narcissa said that we would not be rushed as she was sure that eventually I would fall in love with her self-centered and spoiled son, organizing games outings, classes together and friendly competitions. They only made us form a somewhat shaky friendship.
I was walking down the train aisle with my eyes fixed on a book I bought a week ago, trying to find an empty seat. I saw one full of other boys and girls reading, I decided to enter and only two of them looked at me and a whispered:
“Hello?” said a brunette girl “are you coming to read?“ I nodded and she smiled “What's your name?”
"Jolene Whitemark, nice to meet you," I smiled at her as I held out my hand.
“You know? I don't think there's enough room here, you should go to the next car”
I did not tell her that there was enough room for me and two more people, even though I was a little smaller than I should, I understood that they did not want me around. Whitemark. A lot of money, a lot of connections and also a lot of fear.
I walked, looking for another wagon where I was moderately accepted, and met Draco halfway.
“Get out of my way” I saw him tell me, no taller or wider than me, from below.
“you just asked me to get out of your way, you say? "I raised an eyebrow, grasping him by his blemish-free robe and smashed him against the nearest wall “repeat it”.
Draco looked up and smiled at me as well, tried to sneak out of my grip and I let go as I rolled my eyes. He wasn't going to apologize, a cheap copy of his father, who could never do that. He only knew how to growl and try to bite anyone who came near him. I had several things to teach him.
"Sit with me, we'll meet my friends," he offered, and I denied.
“Your friends smell like Willa's poo”
“I'll tell them to leave, it'll be just us, we'll try my acid pills, I've been saving them for...”
Daddy's spoiled boy had always loved to share his sweets with me, I had the privilege of being the only one he let get into his room, use his toys, see his books and eat his sweets. But I wasn't in the mood, and I needed to make more friends, not just the ones who went with us to play dates three years ago.
“Pass, Malfoy, I'll see you when we get there”
Harry Potter at hogwarts, wonderful, I heard that. That rumor was rumbling through every wagon, while he was talking to a Weasley like he wasn't famous. Naive. I saw how Malfoy wanted to befriend him when they bought robes, but he politely refused. And now, after Weasley laughed at his name I angrily got close and tried to push him down the stairs, which act a nice green-eyed boy interrupted.
“Hi, I'm Harry”
I looked him from up and down.
“I know, I'm Jolene Whitemark, nice to meet you. I hope you're not as big-mouthed as your friend here. I know your brothers, Fred and George, they're good boys and also good friends of mine”.
“You tried to push me, Jolene Whitemark, down the stairs”.
“know that too, klunk, but past trodden, it won't happen again...unless you want to laugh at Malfoy again, Draco is not easy to love, rather, he loves to insult people and only does not go around beating people because he is Lilliputian, but still, with my family nobody messes around, I guess you understand that” Harry nodded, and I looked confused, at least he did not reject me. I could feel Draco's look on my back, I could almost hear what he was thinking and that was probably one of his witty insults to the human race. Fraternizing with blood traitors, he might say in his Nazi language, but all I did was make friends with interesting people. Ronald Weasley also looked like a good boy, he looked at me with certain judgmental eyes, with time I would prove to him that I could get along with anyone.
But then I was in the big dining room, and it was my turn, the hat, or cheap singer or wise guy or whatever, was gonna send me to a house. My mother used to say that this moment would define my future, my friends, my classes, my legacy. I had no preference for any particular house, but my parents did, and everyone in this place knows what it is. Whitemark.
The hat was starting to talk. It felt like thirty minutes, but actually it was almost four, almost four minutes of him saying that I'm smart, cunning and with a big heart. Certainly flattering things, Aunt Narcisa had already told me that I was special, but that a hat spent four minutes telling me all my qualities lifts the spirits quite a lot.
“Slytherin!”
“At no time you said ant Slytherin qualities, and you took an infinity, you hat piece of...”
“I'm always right" he interrupted me, while a teacher in strange attire called someone else.
I walked confused to Slytherin's table, where people with smug faces greeted me, while others sincerely smiled at me. Among those Draco.
“Now can we try my pills? I heard a kid got his tongue pierced once with them”
After that and a long and boring introduction some headpeople lead us to the common room where we started to spend a long time, specially between classes.
“Snape is nasty I bet he doesn’t even shower, Peeves is annoying and so is Filch. I hate them almost as much as the disgusting hat he put on me here” I told Draco one day in the common room “why would I want to be in this room? Besides, I have to go to flight classes on Thursday! First of all, I can't swim and second of all, the heights make me panic, I should choose them just like I should have chosen my wand see this little piece of stick my hand is way bigger and I’m small as a bug”
Draco rolled his eyes, watching me walk from side to side, the puddings he had tucked into his robe pockets seemed to grab his attention too much; enough to not want to agree with me.
“This was the house of our fathers and also the most powerful magician of all time and...”
“The most powerful magician of all time, Malfoy, is Dumbledore, even with his stupid long beard wich probably has pieces of bread stuck in there since the day Jesus Christ was resurrected” I sat next to him and took the pudding out of his hands “and his need to make us have flying lessons! The only thing that saves me from my misfortune is that I will see that class with Harry, he’s very friendly”
“If auntie heard you say that would cut your tongue, I don't do it myself because otherwise you wouldn't be able to say if you want to marry me when we grow up. Potter did not know how to choose his friendships, much less his enmities. He's not gonna have a good time with me, Whitemark, you just stay by my side and see”
“what shall I see? Will I see what an idiot you are? I will never marry you, you are disgusting and only your mommy will be next to you, because even Lucius is disgusted to see his cheap copy” I yelled at him.
I watched his little friends with a bodyguard complex get up, pull out my wand and point them at it. I did only two or three spells well, otherwise I was considerably bad, I excelled in potions rather than enchantments, but I was an expert at making people believe that I knew more, using extravagant words and with a smug home learned face which only indicated that I was about to dominate the world, it didn’t look so threatening now that I think about it and it was probably really funny, but at that time I thought it was great.
Draco settled into his seat, knowing that my 11-year-old self well enough to be aware that my only power greater than everyone else was my right hook.
“I won’t bother taking my wand out too, much less getting up, but I hope you know that they won't have it easy, much less Granger's mudblood, and that after all we're still friends, you and I, and we know each other very well, you know that you don't have to believe everything I say. I don't believe everything you say either, Whitemark.”
“A lot of things I say are serious, stop talking nonsense. I better go to sleep now, I hope the trolls will eat your toenails at night, Malfoy.”
