“You’ll be okay after I’m gone, won’t you?” Spock blinks— whatever he had been expecting Jim to say, it had certainly not been that.
“Pardon?”
“You’re going to outlive me,” Spock’s mouth runs dry, “at least I hope so. I just…” Jim sighs, “want to hear you say it. That you’ll be okay.”
“I cannot.” Spock says quietly. Jim tilts his head to the side.
“Cannot what?”
“Say that I will be alright.”
“Oh, Spock…” Jim wraps his arms around his husband. He wants to argue, but he can’t; he knows the reality of having to live without the other half of his soul, after all. “Just...promise me you’ll try, yeah?”
“Jim—”
“Please.” He has never been able to deny him. Slowly, Spock nods.
“I will try,” he murmurs, and wonders why it is said that Vulcans cannot lie.
