Friends Don't Look At Each Other Like That

Summary:

Elliot hated these damn meetings between Organized Crime and SVU, even Chief McGrath was there - god, he hated that man. They already knew everything they needed to do, they were briefed, they were ready. It was time to hit the pavement and do some real work now. He looked around the room, everyone else seemed invested in the meeting though so he did his best to keep focused. Who knows, maybe he would learn something new.

And the view was pretty fucking nice.

Notes:

Prompt: You have a crush on a co-worker. And that crush is somehow revealed during a company wide meeting.

Work Text:

Elliot hated these damn meetings between Organized Crime and SVU, even Chief McGrath was there - god, he hated that man. They already knew everything they needed to do, they were briefed, they were ready. It was time to hit the pavement and do some real work now. He looked around the room, everyone else seemed invested in the meeting though so he did his best to keep focused. Who knows, maybe he would learn something new.

And the view was pretty fucking nice.

Olivia looked hot in the Captain’s uniform she’d worn for the press briefing. He had never seen her in this particular ensemble and he couldn’t stop staring. When he learned that she had been promoted to Captain while he was away it had almost affected him physically, as if he were a teenager with his first crush. There was just something so fucking attractive about the way she wore her CO title. He had almost swooned when she had lit into him during their IAB interviews - it was difficult not to say ‘yes, ma’am’ whenever she spoke to him. He would be lying if he said the idea of calling her Captain while making love to her hadn’t seated itself in his fantasies.

“Stabler!” Sergeant Brewster called him, his voice loud with irritation.

Startled, he tore his eyes away from Liv and realized the entire room was looking at him expectantly. He had the uneasy feeling that maybe his name had been called a couple of times before Brewster had gotten his attention.

“If you could stop ogling Captain Benson long enough to actually pay attention that would be great,” Brewster said with sarcasm dripping from his voice.

Elliot glanced around the room to see everyone trying to hide the smirks on their faces. Everyone except Olivia herself who had narrowed her eyes at him right before she’d turned a disgusted look at Brewster.

“That’s an inappropriate reprimand, Sergeant,” she said. Fuck, it was even hot when she bossed around other people.

“Yes, Captain,” Brewster said without an ounce of apology. “But it would be nice if -”

“Let’s continue the meeting,” Ayanna cut in, earning Elliot’s gratitude as she moved the meeting forward. It didn’t keep her from glaring at him and shaking her head.

Elliot paid very careful attention to the rest of the briefing and didn’t let his gaze stray from the console displaying images and information about the case.

Once the meeting was over and everyone was dispersed to go about their new orders, it was with dread that he saw Ayanna walk over to him with a determined look on her face.

“Detective Stabler, a word in my office,” she didn’t wait for him to follow her. He could feel the tips of his ears burning and it felt like the whole room was looking at him.

He was sure to close the door behind him because he was certain he didn’t want anyone to overhear him being rebuked.

“Look, Elliot, we all know that you have a crush but - “

He looked at her startled. “I don’t have a crush,” he denied.

“But,” she said again, ignoring his protest, “I’m going to need you to keep your love life out of the squad room. As long as you are under my command I expect you to remain professional and I expect you not to spend debriefings staring at your superior officer’s ass.”

It wasn’t as hot when he was being scolded by someone who wasn’t Olivia.

“We’re just friends,” he argued. He felt like he needed to make the point clear. “I was just -”

“Friends don’t look at each other like that,” she cut him off. With an exasperated look she repeated, “Keep it out of the squad room.” She moved to exit the room but turned back to him before she did. “And for god’s sake when it finally does happen, please make sure you disclose it to 1PP. I am not dealing with the paperwork of a conflict of interest between a Captain and her subordinate.” Then she was gone and he was left with his jaw dropped open.

Thankfully, Liv and McGrath had already left the room when he returned but he really could have done without Fin’s shit eating grin or Brewster’s superior attitude.

“In all fairness,” Fin said leaning over towards him in a whisper, “there is something about an officer in uniform.”

Elliot could feel his face burning red.
