Love and War

Summary:

Izuku and Katsuki were opposites in principle: A dragonborn fighter and a fae lover. While Katsuki was a caring, but grumpy and hotheaded alpha; Izuku was a peacemaking, cheerful omega. In their case, opposites attracted—and oh, boy, did they attract! Those two couldn’t keep their hands off each other. They worked as seamlessly in their life as in their den, and they couldn’t be happier.

They’d recently made a home in the middle of their territories, and they were betrothed, dreaming of finally sealing their bond, mating, and trying for some pups.

Everything was blissfully perfect...Unit the war, that is.

Work Text:

The war brought forth all their insecurities and differences into the open. Izuku didn’t want Katsuki to leave, and his omega refused to give up. Katsuki just wanted to protect his mate; he would burn the world to ensure it.

“I don’t care that you’re the alpha! I’m older, so I should go first!”

'Keep alpha safe; keep alpha happy. Alpha has to stay with us!'

“What kind of alpha sends their omega to the frontlines? Your kind isn’t allowed to anyway! Can’t you just stay safe for once, you idiot?”

'I don’t want you to get hurt. Please, just let me take care of you. I don’t want to lose you.'

“My kind?” Izuku seethed. “What is that supposed to mean? Omegas are just as strong as alphas!”

“Not that, dumbass! Fae. You know you have to stay near the forest!”

Izuku would cry without restraint, clinging to the alpha’s chest and scenting as much as he could. He didn’t want to eat, didn’t want to sleep, only wanted to watch and be near his alpha. Katsuki would pepper Izuku’s face with kisses and reassure him that everything would be all right; that their leader would end the war; that he’d be back safe and sound in no time, and ready to mate and begin their family.

All too soon, Katsuki was taken, and Izuku was forced to bear witness as a ‘volunteer’.

Over the next few years, the blond fought mercilessly and tirelessly with the promise of making it back to his omega. Praise was sung in every tavern and every camp about “Bakugou the Barbarian”; about the menace their army had raised; about how he was a master of explosions, going as far as to call him a god of explosives. With his prowess came a few raises, and he began to send food back to Izuku.

The omega worked near his lands, securing parcels and helping with deliveries. He would send pictures and scented items in hopes of keeping his alpha strong. He would gather letters from the fighters' families and friends in order to send packages; he needed to do something, but he didn’t know what else he could do. He felt utterly powerless.

At first, Izuku would help out with caring for the pups, but couldn't help the image of himself, mated, round with pups. The heavy emotion that choked him at night became stronger. The lack of correspondence from his warrior made the hole in his heart too wide, so he decided to distance himself from that line.

With some pleading, he was able to transfer to food distribution. It was there that he met a young mistress, Eri, a healer, and she told him about a new call for healers-in-training; that they would prepare the recruits and send them out into the field to tend to the alphas and betas in the battle.

Izuku, crafty as he was, tricked the person in charge of the transfers and gained access to the room where the papers were kept. As thanks to Eri, he had her sent over to her brother, Shinsou, while he found where Katsuki was being assigned and changed his destination to match, consequences be damned.

In a week, he was at the camp where his beloved fought. He yearned to search, but took a moment to adjust. His body thrummed with need to be closer to home, to his lands. He whispered a short incantation to tie himself temporarily to the new lands, in order to keep his body from suffering a loss it didn’t have. He would make it back—they would make it back.

A few nights in, it happened. The freckled omega felt the wind knocked out of his lungs the first time that he saw his mate; their bond drawing them together. Katsuki’s usually soft, lively spikes of light gold were dark and matted, his face devoid of emotion and caked with dirt and blood, his eyes darkened by his experiences at war.

It broke Izuku’s heart. He wanted to run into the warrior’s arms, but he couldn’t; the section leader had them prepare double the amount of cots as a wave of injured had just arrived.

“Save to win,” he reminded himself; he could see his mate after.

Hours upon hours were spent stitching up wounds; stanching the bleeding of bullet wounds; sealing the bodies of those that did not survive. Izuku was beyond the point of exhaustion, when he heard a whine by the entrance of the surgery.

Without a doubt, it was his beloved.

“Deku,” the man said in a hoarse whisper, eyes haunted, probably believing his lover to be a trickery of sorts.

Izuku’s eyes filled to the brim with tears, nodding as he ran, wrapping his partner in a crushing hug. “Kacchan!” He sobbed into the broad, warm chest. Relief coursed his being at the contrast from the cold of death he’d felt so frequently in his work

The alpha grabbed his face, searching for wounds, and kissed him until they ran out of air. They both held each other, tears streaming down their faces, whispering their names and reassurances like prayers to increase their faith.

“I missed you so much…”

“I thought of you every fuckin’ day…”

“I was so scared…”

“I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

Their reunion didn’t last much as another wave came in, breaking their bubble.

“Why did you come here, Kacchan?” Izuku asked. “I’m sorry, but I have to help out now.”

“My friend, another soldier. He has obnoxious red hair; his last name is Kirishima. Have you seen him?”

Izuku gave a sad smile and shook his head. “No, but I’ll keep an eye out.”

Katsuki pulled the omega into one last searing kiss before giving him an encouraging nod. “Save to win?”

Izuku grinned, eyes still shimmering from unshed tears. “As long as you win to save.”

“Always, bunny.”

With that Izuku left, his determination renewed.

It turned out that Kirishima—a shifter— had been brought into the operating room where Izuku assisted. It took hours of delicate surgery with moments where he really thought the guy wouldn’t make it, but the scales from his dragon form on chest had kept him from death. Surviving all those injuries, surely granted him unbreakable status—something they assigned to soldiers who lived through the worst ordeals. Izuku blessed a charm for the shifter and laid it upon his chest. With any luck, he’d be sent back to his family and given a rest from their living nightmare.

After he finished up with the dragon shifter, he sent Katsuki a message about the guy’s status and went to his rooms, collapsing on his bed.

Over the next few years, they had their ups and downs—though more downs than ups as often happened in war—but none of it mattered because the next Friday was the anniversary of their betrothal, and they had been blessed. Kacchan was given a day off and so was he.

Katsuki had seen too much over the years, and the war was dragging on more than either of them had thought, so they decided to complete their bond when they were given the opportunity. He would mate his omega, and his omega would mate him. They had both been ready for years, but were hoping to do so with a ceremony that included their loved ones. However, Izuku’s parents had died, his own were in a different camp, and their friends were fighting alongside them. No one knew what the future held; he wasn’t about to stand around any longer and lose his fuckin’ chance.

The moment of their mating was the happiest they’ve ever felt, the closest they’ve ever been, but the newly mated couple didn’t get to rejoice in their bliss for too long.

The day they returned, Katsuki was sent on a rescue mission.

It was supposed to be in and out, but they got ambushed. Most of the soldiers either died or were left to die—the enemy had a weapon that seemed unbeatable, and the prospect of freedom became bleaker and bleaker.

Katsuki was seriously wounded, pierced several times on the side and back. His breath became shallow and his lungs filled with fluids at a more rapid rate that he could cough it out. An enemy general found him bleeding out on the battlefield and gave him some water.

In a moment of lucidness, he grabbed the man’s hand. “Please...my mate...is nearby,” he managed between strangled gurgles, “I...need...to tell…”

He blacked out.

To this day, they’re not sure how it happened, but that general found the way to smuggle Izuku across enemy lines. Even though the enemy doctors didn’t think he’d survive, giving up on the alpha, Izuku gave it his all, cared for him, and saved his life.

Katsuki had never been more grateful for his talented mate, and Izuku couldn’t be more relieved that he’d left his land and chosen the path to become a healer.
