think about it twice

Summary:

Contrary to what Nobara and Megumi would say, Yuuji is not dumb.

Notes:

hii. i am not a writer and originally wrote this as part of a bday present which was a long google doc of many little vignettes like this one... it's kind of choppy but i think it's silly so it's staying up

Work Text:

Contrary to what Nobara and Megumi would say, Yuuji is not dumb.

Okay so he ate a cursed finger and is now the vessel of the King of Curses (trademark symbol obligatory), but it was an accident! He wasn't thinking much when it happened, except for a way to potentially save his friends.

Anyways. Yuuji is not dumb or stupid and he can tell that Nobara has a big fat crush on Maki, and that it’s obviously reciprocated.

The real problem is that neither of them will do anything about it.

Yuuji's had to watch them dance around each other for so long, it’s not even entertaining anymore.

It was really fun at first, seeing how much Nobara blushed when Maki did anything. Enough that Yuuji and Megumi teased her a lot, but now it's become so common to see Nobara grinning while talking to Maki that nobody even bats an eye anymore.

Ugh. Literally at this very moment while Yuuji is thinking about them, Maki has offered to go shopping with Nobara. No one likes going shopping with Nobara: she takes forever and makes you carry all her bags like some kind of personal assistant, so for Maki to offer to go with her is a sure sign that she’s in love.

Yuuji can see Nobara gesturing enthusiastically and Maki smiling at her. Gross. He’s about to get up from where he’s sitting against a tree to go see if Megumi died, or something, on his way to the vending machine and back, but he sees Gojo-sensei approaching.

He quickly sits back down and seriously considers pretending to be asleep or meditating while he waits for Megumi to come back or for Nobara to stop flirting with Maki, because they're out here to spar, and he’s technically not supposed to be taking a break.

Thankfully, Gojo-sensei doesn't even look his way, passing his resting spot and stopping by Maki and Nobara, so he relaxes again. When he turns he sees Megumi finally returning with their drinks, and cheers.

When Megumi reaches him and opens his mouth to speak, Yuuji shakes his head and shushes him, pulling him down to sit beside him and nodding towards where Gojo is speaking with Nobara and Maki. He doesn't want to miss the way Nobara and Maki will blush furiously if their sensei makes any kind of teasing remark.

Unfortunately, before any blushing occurs, Gojo-sensei calls Yuuji and Megumi over too, and tells them they'll be accompanying Nobara and Maki on a mission that will last a few days. He sends them back to their rooms to pack and makes sure to remind them they better not forget anything.

Because of the reminder, Yuuji makes sure to pack his toothbrush this time. He doesn't want a repeat of the last time they had an overnight mission when he forgot it and suffered.

Yuuji is second last to arrive when they reconvene. He's glad Megumi and Maki are the ones receiving additional instructions and information from Gojo-sensei, since it's always easier to understand when they explain it without all of Gojo-sensei's additional (and unnecessary) remarks.

When Nobara finally joins them, Gojo-sensei takes them to catch a train into the city and hands Maki directions to their hotel, reminding them to contact him or the school if something goes terribly wrong.

On the train, Yuuji sits down next to Megumi, and Nobara and Maki sit together.

The ride isn’t even that long, but Nobara must be tired, because after a few minutes she nods off and her head ends up on Maki’s shoulder. Yuuji wonders if this will be a step forward for them to realize their feelings for each other.

At the hotel, they all exchange glaces and rolled eyes when they realize that Gojo-sensei only booked them one room. At least it has two beds.

Nobara claims the one furthest from the window as soon as they walk in and says she’ll share with Maki. Yuuji and Megumi agree, they’ve shared a bed before, it’s whatever.

Since it's nearing evening, they decide to go out to eat something before they come back for an early night, and start their mission tomorrow. They find a place near the hotel and settle down. When he sees Maki and Nobara sharing some of the food they ordered, Yuuji decides that they must really be oblivious to how the other is feeling.

After they finish eating, they wander around a little before going back to the hotel, scouting out their mission territory and wondering if they’ll find any curses on the way.

Yuuji collapses on the bed when they’re back in the room, he says he wants to shower so everyone better hurry up getting ready for bed. Nobara smacks him with a pillow, but doesn’t take nearly as much time as she could.

He showers, gets dressed, and brushes his teeth, and he sees the other three already tucked in when he exits the bathroom. He’s happy to see that Nobara is asleep next to Maki and he's smiling as he turns the last lamp off and climbs into bed next to Megumi.

After a whispered goodnight, he settles down to sleep.

The next morning he’s woken up by the sun hitting his face. He curses whoever didn’t close the curtains yesterday and then remembers he was the last to lay down. Oops.

Oh well, as he turns and tries to get comfortable again, he catches a glimpse of Maki and Nobara, who seem to be tangled up in their bed. Maybe this will be the moment they finally get their shit together.

He’s too sleepy to think about it now though, and falls back to sleep for a while longer.

When they split up for a moment during the mission, Yuuji asks Nobara if she was nervous sleeping next to Maki all tangled up.

Nobara looks at him really weirdly, like she thinks he’s missing something.

He gets why when he hears her next reply:

“Uh, not really? She’s literally my girlfriend, so.”

Yuuji was wrong. Nobara is right. He is actually super dumb.
