Work Text:

Marcy checked her phone for the umpteenth time, making sure she had the time right. She didn’t want to be too late, but she didn’t want to be early either. The anxiety was about to swallow her whole.

Sasha had invited her to a game. Marcy could care less about sports and cheerleading in general, but Sasha, her best friend and definitely-not-crush , had invited her. How could she say no?

“Welcome, everybody!” The announcer said, Marcy sighing in relief. The voice narrated everything that happened, but that really didn’t help Marcy’s already limited understanding of sports. From what she gathered, a large group of boys run around the field, chasing the ball and knocking each other over. None of it made any sense, but Marcy waited it out until halftime when Sasha would perform.

When the time finally came, several girls filed out onto the field, all dressed uniformly. Marcy only paid attention to one. Sasha stood out with her perfectly done hair and sparkling outfit. The music began to play and the performance started.

Marcy was enchanted by the way Sasha moved, dancing and flipping effortlessly. Sasha finished with her hands in the air, breathing heavily. Marcy leapt up, cheering loudly. Sasha glanced at her and winked, and Marcy could have sworn that her soul left her body in that moment. Before Marcy could properly react, the group ran off the field, leaving her to anxiously wait until it was over.

After what seemed like forever, the announcer’s voice rang clear, “The scores are in, and the winner is… Saint James!”

Half of the crowd erupted into cheers and chaos as the whole team rushed out to meet their families. Marcy spotted Sasha waving her over frantically. Marcy ran as fast as she could, hastily apologizing to the people she had to push out of the way. Sasha met her halfway there and grabbed her hands, pulling her the rest of the way.

“You did amazing!” Marcy yelled.

Sasha looked down, rubbing her arms, “It really wasn’t. I messed up the flip, and I almost-”

Marcy put a finger over Sasha’s lips, “Shush. You looked perfect.”

Sasha sighed and wrapped her arms around her. Marcy squeezed her back, feeling the other girl bury her face into the crook of her neck. Marcy’s face started heating up, nervous giggles building up in the back of her throat. She swallowed it back down and tried to focus on the moment. Sasha was practically melted into the embrace, leaving Marcy to try and support all the weight. Sasha exhaled deeply, her breath tickling Marcy’s neck. Despite her efforts to stay silent, Marcy giggled quietly.

When Sasha heard, she joined in, releasing her grip. Marcy immediately missed the familiar weight and comfort. By now, their laughs were loud enough for anyone around them to hear. Sasha gazed into Marcy’s eyes with an unreadable expression.

Sasha leaned closer, placing one hand on Marcy’s waist. The other reached up to lightly graze Marcy’s cheek.

“Is this ok?”

Marcy leaned into the touch, giving Sasha full permission to do whatever.

“Words, Marcy. I don’t want to do anything that would make you upset.”

“Please.” It was only one word but it was all the confirmation that Sasha needed. They both leaned in, suspended in time. Holy shit, Sasha is going to-

“Hey Sasha! There you are!” A loud voice interrupted the moment. Sasha whipped her head around to glare at the newcomer. When she saw who it was, she wrapped a protective arm around Marcy’s waist.

“Dylan. What do you need?” She asked, fake smiling.

“Never mind me, who is that? Is she your girlfriend or something?”

Sasha pulled Marcy closer, “So what if she is?”

“Hm, I didn’t think that the star of the school would go for some nerdy trash.”

Before Marcy could think twice, she grabbed Sasha by the hand, tugging her down and into a kiss.

She felt Sasha freeze up, and nearly pulled away before Sasha squeezed her hand. Marcy smiled smugly against Sasha’s lips, knowing how uncomfortable Dylan would be. Marcy had never kissed anyone before, and Sasha knew this. She was obviously being gentle, not wanting to upset Marcy in any way. Her heart swelled with affection knowing how much Sasha cared. Using the hand that wasn’t holding her own, Sasha caressed her cheek. The simple gesture caused the rest of the world to fall away, leaving only Marcy, Sasha, and the burning butterflies in her chest. She could barely hear it when Dylan walked away, saying something about unnecessary PDA.

The first thing Marcy saw when she came back to the real world was Sasha staring at her. The consequences of what she just did came crashing down on her instantly. All the thoughts she had during the kiss were thrown out the window, replaced by crippling doubt.

“I’m sorry, he was just bothering me and-”

“Marcy.”

“And I wanted to put him in his place-”

“Marcy.”

“But I understand if I overstepped and I know that I shouldn’t have kissed you- holy shit I kissed Sasha Waybright. Sasha Waybright, the captain of the cheerleaders, the most popular girl in school, and also possibly the hottest.”

Sasha laughed, “Yep. And I just kissed Marcy Wu. Marcy Wu, the top student in every class, the coolest person I know, and definitely the cutest.”

Marcy looked up at Sasha, who had a devilish grin on her face. Instead of replying, Marcy took Sasha’s hand and intertwined their fingers.

“So… what does this mean?” Marcy asked.

Sasha hummed in thought, “Well, I would be honored if you were to be my girlfriend.”

“It would be my pleasure.” Marcy pecked the cheek of her new girlfriend

“This is great and all, but I am starving. Can my girlfriend treat me to some crappy game food?”

“Oh thank god, I’m starving too but I didn’t want to ruin the moment.” Marcy confessed. The two walked over to the food stands, hand in hand.

Looking back on the ordeal, perhaps Marcy could have handled it differently, but she wouldn’t change the outcome for anything. Having Sasha by her side was better than anything she could ever ask for.
