So, you're dating the campus Frat Star?

Summary:

Charlie Spring finally settles on a university away from home, away from his past in Kent, hoping for a fresh start. And, to be honest, hoping for a man. His teenage years were filled with hardly a drop of romance, and let's be honest, there's only so much a teenage gay boy can bottle up. What he doesn't realize is that he's going to be surrounded by so many different, very attractive men in university, and that could have some consequences.

Nick Nelson, hoping to get his own fresh start after fizzling out at University of Leeds, heads for a smaller school. Unfortunately, his brother's reputation follows him around like a bad case of the clap, attracting requests from various organizations and fraternities to join. What Nick doesn't realize is that his pathway is about to collide with several others during his sophomore year, revealing feelings he has denied and kept hidden for the past decade.

We all know that Nick and Charlie are destined to be together, in any universe, but what will it take in this one?

Generally mature, but E-rate will be added to Chapter summaries that are bit more *graphic*

Notes:

This is semi-autobiographical, in the sense that I was in a Fraternity (not a social one) at University, and therefore things that I experienced will be added into the story for characters to experience. I will let you know when that happens, in notes, so you can laugh with me about the stupid shit I did in my youth. Is this a form of therapy? Also, this is definitely inspired in part by definitelystable's The Way That You Smiled Was A Promise, I Swear, BUT their Portland Punk life is infinitely cooler than my drunken uni shenanigans. Go read that one, ASAP, too. Features neo-Nazi punching and midwest Nick Nelson, highly recommend.

Because I am making a lot of stuff up and because I am adding non-UK things in (Greek Life), I am using this first chapter to set the scene about setting and some terms/roles characters will play in the story, plus terminology, mostly so you don't have to spend time googling icky Greek Life terms. Keep that browser history/cookie cache free. Actual chapters start on CH2 of this work.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Chapter Text

Location -- University of South Yorkshire (abbreviated USY) -- completely made up;  located somewhere in the middle of Manchester, Sheffield, and Leeds in the UK.  No specific town in mind.

Organizations:

Fraternities:  Lambda Tau Gamma (Beta Iota Chapter),  Delta Lambda (Sigma Alpha Chapter)

Sororities:  Sigma Alpha Phi (Omicron Chapter), Eta Epsilon Tau (Epsilon Chapter)

(I had some fun making these names -- if you use their Greek letters or pronounce things, you might see some of the puns)

Clubs/Societies:  Rugby Club, Rowing Club, LGBTQIA+ Society, The Yorkie Student Newspaper, Student Government, the Sapphic Vigilantes

Greek Terms:
Chapter - a Greek organization's local, university based unit that conducts business

PNM - potential new members

Brothers/Sisters - terms used for fraternities/sororities respectively to indicate membership in the organization

Bigs/Littles - a Big Brother/Sister is supposed to play a guidance role in the new member's life within the organization; they become known as a Little Brother/Sister.  People just say Big/Little.  Fully acknowledge, yes it is a bit weird.

Rush - a frenzied period of Greek time in which potential new members are courted by a number of different fraternities/sororities for recruitment, with a variety of events (especially meet and greets) conducted for Brothers/Sisters to get to know PNMs;  eventually, discussions and votings are conducted to offer bids to certain PNMs to join the organization.

Bid - just a fancy word for an invitation to join a Greek organization

Mixers - just as they sound, but usually it is specifically an invite only party between certain fraternities and sororities, usually 1 frat chapter and 1 sorority chapter, but can be larger.

Initiation - the semester that a PNM accepts a bid, they go through "education" about a Greek organization's ideals, history, symbols, etc.  This time period is frequently stressful and often subject to hazing, or "hazing-lite."  Yes, it is shit; definitely won't argue with that.  Yes, they also lie about "we don't haze."  If PNMs satisfy their educational piece and other organization requirements, pending final approval by Brothers/Sisters, they are officially inducted into the Chapter roll book.

Executive Board - a committee of officers (President, VP, Treasurer, Secretary, maybe others) that lead the organization, conduct meetings, and act as liaisons to the national organization.

Chairs and Committees - Chairs lead planning of various aspects - Initiation Chairs conduct rush/initiation events,  Social Chairs plan and execute mixers, other social events, etc.  Different organizations have different Chairs, but usually all social frats/sororities will have at least Initiation and Social Chairs, and probably even a philanthropy chair.  Committees are made up of non-Chair Brothers/Sisters that help the Chair carry out planning/execution of events.   Ultimately, not really different from some workplaces and other organizations that have similar things.

Greek Week - usually in the Spring after chapters have inducted new members, a week of general debauchery and campus-wide events for Greek organizations to celebrate together

(terms added as necessary)
