Chapter Text

Common Sense (Doctors (And AFO) Hate It)

When Izuku was five, he was told he was Quirkless by a doctor who disappeared and was never seen again. A doctor he had never seen before that day, either. A doctor that no one in the doctor’s office knew or were familiar with, either, from the way he remembered the secretary looking at the name on his appointment. The day he was “Diagnosed”, while his Mama was crying in the living room, a suspicious Izuku sat at the computer and googled the pinky-toe “Fact”.

What he found were dozens of articles from years and years ago declaring it was a proven Urban Legend. There were several lists of both old and new Heroes and Celebrities that had the double-joint, even! Now more indignant than suspicious, he googled the “doctor” he’d seen…

And what he found was an article about a man who had lost his medical license twenty years ago because of early-onset dementia and medical malpractice.

“MOM?!” He called out through his open door. “I think we need to go to the police!”

This was the first time Izuku used his “Quirk”, according to the new Doctor that they ended up going to.

“Its most likely a mutation of your telepathy, Mrs. Midoriya,” Doctor Yamamoto informed his mother earnestly as Izuku stared at him, brow furrowed. “A part of your son’s brain that works just different enough that it doesn’t show up on the scans, but it’s clear he’s got a mental Quirk! You see, most children, especially at this age with their new Quirks and the new independence of Preschool and Daycare and such, they’re prone to little ‘Adventures’, right? Injuries due to Quirk accidents and tumbles are at the highest at this age, followed by puberty when hormones are interfering. But the ages between four and eight, when most Quirks appear, is the highest percentage of injuries and damage to property. With me so far?” Obviously confused, his Mama nodded along, anxiously wringing the handkerchief in her hands as she did. Izuku kicked his feet idly as he watched the Doctor, who was an actual doctor, he’d checked when his Mama hadn’t.

“And have you noticed Izuku-Kun here getting more bruises or scrapes?” The doctor asked knowingly, a small smile on his face. “Any notes from teachers about tussles or fights or rough-housing?” Immediately, Mama shook her head.

“They, um, they only noted that he s-seems really interested in books and, and playing quietly with his friends?” She told him tentatively, nibbling her lip. Izuku patted his pockets automatically and pulled out the tiny chapstick he carried triumphantly, handing it to her with a smile as she thanked him. Mama’s lips got chapped a lot, since she tended to chew on them. The doctor’s smile widened at the action, and Izuku blinked at him curiously.

“Exactly so,” the Doctor said warmly. “And, let me guess, his friends aren’t like that at all, right?” Mama shook her head immediately.

“His, um, his best friend, Katsuki-kun, just got his own Quirk, an, um, an Explosion Quirk? And his mother, Mitsuki-chan, has, um, already called me three times this week because of the little fires and burns and broken furniture it’s caused. She even had to get a new washer because her old one broke because of the residue build-up,” she admitted; Izuku wrinkled his nose.

“I told Auntie that she would have to get special soaps now,” he told his Mama earnestly. “’Cause Kacchan’s Quirk is caused by his sweat which means it’ll be in his clothes and blankets and towels! She’ll have ta get heat-resistant clothes too ‘cause if Kacchan gets too excited he could burn it all up!” Doctor Yamamoto’s smile was now definitely a grin as he gestured at Izuku, and Izuku’s Mama had a weird look of realization on her face, hands clapped over her mouth as if she was seeing Izuku for the first time, tears in her eyes.

“And that right there is a perfect example of your son’s Quirk in use,” the Doctor declared. “That level of perception is only usually seen in top-level scientists and a few Heroes and Inventors! You’ve got a special Quirk there, kiddo,” the Doctor informed him warmly, and Izuku blinked at him in confusion.

“But… It’s not a Quirk, I don’t think?” He said hesitantly, peering up at the Doctor. “It’s just.. Really obvious?” The Doctor chuckled and patted him on the head, making Izuku wrinkle his nose instinctively.

“Just because it’s not super strength or magic lasers doesn’t mean it’s not special, kiddo,” the older man admonished warmly, before turning to Izuku’s tearfully beaming Mama. “Let’s get the Quirk Registration squirreled away for you and get this on the road, shall we?”

“Y-yes, Doctor, thank you!” Izuku’s Mama chirped happily, sniffling, and Izuku handed her a new handkerchief when he saw hers was clenched too tightly in her hand, earning a bright, watery smile.

Adults were so weird.
