New Mexico State of Mind

Work Text:

he sun glittered across the rocks in the fading New Mexican sun. In contrast, the wind whipped off the mountains and did its best to get into the bones of the townspeople. While the skies didn't quite say December, the temperature certainly did. Not that she wasn't used to the snappish cold. New Mexico's dryish cold had absolutely nothing on the damp winters of Britain.

Staring out the open blinds, towards the climbing hills in the Vista was Millicent Bulstrode. Millie, as people chose to call her, whether she liked it or not, was a fairly new transplant to the desert and found it to be a nice change from where she had been before. Millie was also freshly graduated from college back in England. Her quiet British accent just made her seem even more exotic to the people in the town. Millie just pretended not to notice the smiles or curious looks she received any time she spoke. She had come on the request of some distant relative. In reality, she thought her parents were just trying to help her.

She stepped out of the office building she had been sitting in. The reception area had been bustling that morning but then it had been a really slow afternoon. If she listened carefully, she could hear the high school band warming up for the town's holiday parade. Most of the townspeople were gathered on the streets to cheer on the participants and wave to a Santa covered in chili peppers. But, she was not feeling the Christmas spirit herself. She was thousands of miles from her family, friends and him. They had left off on good terms, or so she thought. He was also in the states, the east coast, but compared to New Mexico, that might as well be Britain. His job kept him there, but that wasn't a place for her. She missed his dark hair and bright blue eyes. She would remember the most mundane conversations that they had ever had while laying alone at night. They had talked about their future plans before he had to move, but the reality of the situation had her down.

Daydreaming a bit wistfully, she looked up into the sky and saw the first flakes of December begin to fall from the dark blue gray sky. The snow floated on the wind and swirled around Millie. She turned and walked back into the office and away from the chill. Shaking her head from the memories with a small, sad smile, she begins the process of closing for the evening when the door chimes sound. Turning, she opens her mouth but no sound comes out. Her eyes fill with tears of glee as she runs towards her main Christmas wish.

"Theo," she exclaimed, "what? How?""

"Millie, I missed you. And, well, I didn't want to spend Christmas, or any other day without you. I was able to transfer to an office in Albuquerque. So, what do you say Mills? Do you want to spend the rest of our days together?"

"Yes, Theo." She said quietly through her smiling tears. "Of course I do
