When Kara opens her eyes she finds herself under a red light similar to the one Rao emanated on Krypton, and she would be in awe were it not for the fact that her hands and ankles are bound with lead chains, she knows because she can't force them. Her vision is blurry, she only hears whispers until she can see clearly blinking a couple of times to discover that she is in Star Labs, but not with her friends around.
"Oh, the girl of steel woke up." She looks menacingly at Eobard who smiles mischievously.
"Where are my friends?" Kara asks in a low voice.
"Your friends are on Earth X." He replies smiling. "I wouldn't worry too much about your friends since they won't live much longer."
"Stop it Eobard." Kara's eyes widen in surprise as she recognizes that voice. "Don't annoy my patient."
The woman slowly circles the gurney until she stops in front of it, smiling mischievously. Kara cannot believe her eyes and for a moment she wonders if she is still unconscious. Standing before her is Lena, or a double of Lena. She is similar in every physical aspect, except for her green eyes that do not glow with innocence but they do show evil and of course the Nazi symbol on her chest, wearing a totally black outfit like the make up around her eyes and hair.
"Lena...." Kara says in a low whisper.
"Hello, Supergirl." This new Lena greets her smiling. "Ever thought you would run into a version of your Lena like me?"
"No, she would never do this." She mumbles and the other Lena chuckles.
"You're right, on Earth X the heroes are the 'villains.'" She makes a quotation mark gesture with her fingers. "It's confusing at first, isn't it?"
"Our General doesn't like delays." Eobard interjects and Kara sees this Lena roll her eyes.
"Our General appreciates nothing but their person, so make yourself useful and disappear, Poof!" She gestures indicating his super speed and Eobard sighs smiling.
"Just don't take too long."
With that said, he leaves the lab and the other Lena turns her back to her to start typing rapidly and the screen shows Kara's body in infrared. She fails to understand how a version of Lena could possibly be with the Nazis, Kara knows how much her friend hates that part of history, it's almost surreal.
"I can feel your heat vision on my back." Lena says and turns to look at her again without erasing that smile. "Do you have questions?"
"My questions would be absurd considering what I see." She says angrily. "But I just can't get my head around a version of Lena being with the Nazis."
"Right, on your Earth the Nazis lost." She fakes sadness and then smiles. "And you fell in the country that took all the credit for that defeat, now you wear their colors with pride when there really is no difference, Kara." Saying her name sends chills down her spine. "But you're not here for history lessons, though."
"No, I'm here because your general abused her power and now needs a new heart."
"Right." She walks gracefully to stand at her left side. "A few times I didbtell her she'd end up like Icarus, but the General is well.... you know."
"Arrogant, conceited, narcissistic, cruel and a Nazi."
"Excellent description." She laughs cooking her head to the side. "And now I have to cut your skin." She slides a finger across Kara's chest. "To cut your heart out and give new life to the mighty General."
"I sense a bit of disdain in the way you refer to her." Kara between closes her eyes and allows herself to smile. "You don't like your General?"
"I like that you smile even though you know you will die."
"Your deviation from the topic is a yes."
"I'm not really in a position to say whether I like her or not, she is the General thanks to the powers granted to her by the sun, for that reason the Führer chose her as his wife, she is so full of herself that she thought she was invincible and now here we are, wasting our time with you."
"So you had another solution, right?" Kara smiles with a frown as she sees her make a face. "My Lena always chooses the shortest and most precise path, so you must have suggested a treatment or something."
"You're not so stupid as they described." Her eyes show admiration and mischief. "How fascinating."
"Answer me, I'm going to die after all." She says in an amused tone and Lena snorts exhaling.
"Yes, Kara, I suggested something else." She leans toward her. "But as you now see, they opted for the 'cruelest' option."
"You should have suggested creating a new heart, one that didn't need any more spare parts, and yet she preferred to capture me to demonstrate her power, that's the reason you dislike her."
"Yes." They both glare at each other. "But now I think it was a good idea because I got to meet you, a different Kara."
"You could be different too."
"Like your Lena?"
"Yes, like my Lena." She replies with a nod. "She always helps those in need."
"Even when they don't deserve it, like you." Kara frowns. "Oh yes, I know all about your world, Kara and you." She points a finger at her. "You failed your Lena."
"No, I didn't..."
"Lex Luthor showed up and told her who you really are, and now she hates you." She says taunting and Kara's eyes sparkle with sadness. "And seeing me, you fear this is what she might become, she will always be a Luthor for you, won't she?"
"No!"
"As Supergirl you distrusted Lena and sent her asshole boyfriend to open the vault in search of more kryptonite, he didn't do it because he respected her, how ironic isn't it? The man who was judging her ended up defending her against the one who was fighting for her innocence."
"I didn't..."
"Accept your mistake Kara!" She exclaims smiling. "Accept that you don't trust your Lena and fear that she will become like me! Come on, do it!"
"I don't distrust Lena!" She shouts with tears in her eyes. "She would never be someone like you."
"I thought you were different, but you're
just like the General, you don't accept your mistakes." She leans toward her again. "You looked at me with surprise and pain because you think of her, the Lena you have failed."
"And you?" Kara rebuts. "Do you really support the Nazis?"
"Why wouldn't I?" She frowns in amusement "You think I'd be better off with the inept rebels under Schott who sets up a dumb machine to take us down, which I can destroy in seconds?" she laughs wrinkling her nose. "Don't be delusional, Kara."
"The only delusional here is you, who forces herself to follow a cause she doesn't support."
"I like you, Kara." She turns her back and turns around to pick up a vial of red liquid. "You know you're the first Kryptonian to try to convince me to do what you people think is right?" She turns with syringe in hand and the panel shows several Superman bodies. "Everyone you see on the screen were once my patients, we captured them hoping their hearts would work, on their worlds there is no Supergirl, but we finally found one."
Kara looks in horror at the bodies belonging to different versions of her cousin, all without a heart and frozen in strange cylinders. As she turns her gaze back to Lena she feels fear, mostly because she doesn't know what that red liquid in the syringe might do to her.
"Scared, Supergirl?"
"How could you...?"
"Do it?" She crosses her arms, holding firmly the needle. "It was simple, they exhausted me with their simple hero words, so I quickly opened their chest as I listened to their screams of agony."
"You are evil."
"No, Kara, I'm just a doctor doing her job." She says in a loving tone. "What's wrong for you is right for us and seeing you try to make me see through your hero eyes is absurd, because we grew up on different Earths, suck it up already and stop seeing your Lena in me."
"I can't" She mutters. "I can't see you being what you hate." She says in a broken voice. "In what you think I think of you in, this is a fucking nightmare." She begins to cry and Lena glares at her. "I can't believe that such a Lena exists."
"There is an evil version of you, why wouldn't there be one of Lena?"
"Because she is... Lena."
Eobard advances through the corridors until he runs into Overgirl, who looks at him strangely when she sees him smiling so she raises her hand for him to stop, he sighs and does as he's told.
"Where's Lena?"
"Dr. Luthor is taking care of new patient." He replies mischievously as he sees her tense her jaw. "And she's very interested in Supergirl."
"I have to assume because of the similarity to me."
"I don't think so."
Eobard continues on his way and Overgirl hurries up only to meet Lena smiling genuinely at Supergirl. A heat of anger invades her chest and taking firmer steps she makes her presence known gaining the attention of Lena who rolls her eyes at the sight of her and before her back is turned she grabs her arm forcing her to look at her.
"What are you doing?" she asks angrily. "Are you playing with the vessels again?"
"If I didn't I'd be bored." She replies with a smug smile that elicits something she shouldn't feel. "She's the first smart Kryptonian I've ever met." She says this on purpose, so Overgirl uses more force in her grip.
"We don't have time for your mind games, Lena."
"She's not ready for surgery yet, she's too strong." Lena stares with admiration at Supergirl and as she turns her gaze back to Overgirl she disappears. "If you want everything to go as you wish, General, I suggest not fracturing my arm, just as an added measure." She grimaces in amusement and all of a sudden there's a scalpel is in her neck as Overgirl presses it there. "Wow, I didn't expect this, what will you do General? Kill me?"
"Don't tempt me, Lena." She growls applying more pressure.
"You know well I'm not afraid to die, General." Her smile fades to give way to coldness. "Besides Eobard can do my job, so..." She takes her hand. "Cut my throat."
Overgirl's jaw quivers and she stares at Lena with fury, but also with something else. And if it weren't for Kara's laughter they wouldn't stop glaring at each other. Overgirl puts the scalpel away and looks at Supergirl who smiles mischievously.
"So you like Lena." She cocks her head. "Are you jealous of me, General?"
"What did you do to her?" She asks Lena who smiles in amusement.
"I injected her with red kryptonite." She crosses her arms in amusement. "What? She was smothering me with her hero monologues and now she's funnier."
"If you let me go we can have some fun, something that your General would never be able to bestow." Kara uses a deep, sultry voice.
"You have courage for a vessel." Overgirl grabs her by the neck squeezing it, but Kara just laughs. "Your heart will serve me, even if you're dead."
"You know better than that." Lena interjects. "I need her alive, if you want to live General."
"Listen to the lady." Overgirl uses more force. "Right, you don't listen to suggestions."
"You told her about the artificial heart." She looks at Lena who shrugs.
"I couldn't resist her cleverness."
"And to my charm."
Kara winks at the brunette and Overgirl releases her to approach Lena again, grabbing her arms to drag her away from Supergirl. Lena smiles looking at Kara, but Overgirl grabs her jaw making her look only at her earning another distasteful stare from her green eyes.
"She's just a vessel carrying my new heart, you shouldn't pay attention to her."
"And why not?" She questions coolly.
"Lena." She articulates her name at length angrily.
"Don't interfere with my work." Now she can leave the formalities aside. "And with my entertainment."
"You like her?" Lena laughs and Overgirl shakes her. "Answer me!"
"She interests me." She watches Kara play with her fingers. "It's really fascinating how much she loves her Lena and if I can have fun using my face to confuse her, then I'll continue in my work until I cut her heart out for you, General."
"Lena, I..."
"Dr. Luthor." Oliver and Eobard appear and they must separate.
"Führer." Lena salutes.
"How's the procedure going?"
"In about half an hour everything will be ready for surgery."
"Yeah, she'll slice me up like ham." Kara says with amusement and Oliver looks at her curiously. "Why do all Oliver's lack facial expressions? I can't tell if you're happy, angry or constipated." She lets out a laugh and Lena has to restrain herself.
"What did you do Doctor?"
"Red Kryptonite, she's more tolerable that way." She replies smiling when she sees Kara wink at her. "Besides, it'll keep her heart stronger for your wife." Overgirl kept silent looking at her with anger and something else
"Good." Oliver says and walks over to his wife. "In half an hour you will be reborn, stronger."
"Like the phoenix." Kara intervenes
And he wants to kill her already. "It's very fitting since your wife is emanating too much sun radiation."
"I'll leave with Eobard and come back when the surgery starts." Overgirl nods. "I love you."
"I love you." She replies as well and Kara snorts.
"Gag her."
He orders Lena before leaving with Eobard who has noticed the tension, but decides to say nothing. Overgirl walks back to sit down, the red light is starting to weaken her too so she has to walk away, even though she doesn't want to. She can't stand to see Lena smiling at Supergirl like she's the most wonderful thing in the world, not when she used to look at her like that before, before she married Oliver and their relationship ended forever. Her useless heart aches, it hurts too much but not because of the radiation.
"You're really going to gag me?" Kara questions with amusement.
"Not until he gets back." She winks smiling. "You're good at talking with no inhibitions"
"Although now we have an audience." They both look at Overgirl. "You know, I may not have inhibitions, but one thing I'm very sure of, Lena X."
"What's that?"
"Lena will avenge my death." This gets Overgirl's attention. "She may want to hate me now, but despite all that anger she feels… she also loves me as I love her, and she will not rest until she sees your Earth destroyed."
"You're so confident that the woman you lied to for years and judged as Supergirl will avenge you."
"My Lena is like that, and I suggest you increase your security systems." She smiles smugly. "Because she could destroy them in seconds, all just for me."
Lena and Overgirl keep quiet analyzing Kara's words. The confidence in her voice tells them that she is not lying and they look at each other again feeling the danger, but also recognizing that, even though they hate each other, they will avenge each other. Overgirl averts her gaze, clenching her fists tightly, feeling weak and useless in every way, while Lena just smiles, pressing the button to knock Supergirl unconscious.
Half an hour passes and Overgirl is already on the gurney ready for surgery. Oliver makes his entrance and after saying a few words to her, he takes her hand and watches her become unconscious. Lena puts on her gloves and is ready to make the first cut, however, she stops. The security alert serves helps her to pretend that is the reason why she did and she only sees Eobard and Oliver leaving to defend. Lena quickly removes her gloves and pushes the button waking up Kara who exhales in scared at the sight of her, but is shocked when she sees her untie her.
"Lena, what....?"
"Don't think I'm doing this out of kindness, I just want to get away from her."
"Okay." Kara nods and struggles to get to her feet.
"Relax you still don't get your powers back." She helps her walk and stops to look at the unconscious Overgirl.
"You love her, don't you?"
"She made her choice and I now I'm making mine."
They manage to get out of the lab until they stumble upon Alex who looks at them with astonishment. Kara tells her that there is no time to explain everything and they go with the others. When Lena is recognized by the rebels, they quickly point their guns at her, but Kara protects her, telling them that if they shoot, they'll regret it. The fight continues and Lena decides to stand back because she does not like Schott and when the heroes get the victory by killing Oliver, she knows she made her best decision and now Overgirl will lead this world as she always wanted.
Kara suggests her to go to her Earth and since she has no other option she accepts. When they show up at the DEO they didn't count that Lena from that world would be there, when the agents recognize the symbol on her chest they don't hesitate to point their guns at her and Lena X only emits an evil laugh and Kara touches her forehead exhaling.
"Does this bother you?" Lena X points to the symbol on her chest.
"Lena, please." Kara looks at her pleading.
"Fine." She rolls her eyes and presses a button to fade it out. "Happy, Supergirl?"
"Yes" Kara smiles and Lena X smiles too.
"What's going on here?" Lena walks up looking at her doppelganger. "Who is she and why does she look like me?"
"She is..."
"Lena Luthor, like you." Lena X replies. "Formerly Dr. Luthor in the service of the Nazis on Earth X where now her most annoying version must be leading." She points at Kara who looks at her indignantly "What? You're irritating, admit it."
"Why did you bring a Nazi?" Lena angrily questions.
"As far as I know you shouldn't be here." Lena X interjects again. "You shouldbbe planning to get back at Kara for lying to you, so your questioning is inappropriate, but I'll answer it." She confronts her and Lena doesn't let her guard down. "I'm here under Kara, Supergirl's protection, how about that?"
"You trust a Nazi, but..."
"Not me." Lena X finishes the sentence starting to laugh. "I can't believe how pathetic I am in this world."
"Hey." Kara groans and rolls her eyes again.
"Whatever, I'm not a threat, I'll just stay here some time before I find a place where I can live peacefully." She steps back, wrapping her arm around Kara's arm. "I want to try that weird food you mentioned on the way here to your world, so let's go."
"I don't like you ordering me around."
"Oh, sorry." She pouts. "Did I hurt your feelings?"
"Let's just go."
Kara mumbles blushing and walks with her to the balcony. Lena X looks back observing Lena's jealous gesture, and smiles wickedly winking at her to articulate without whispering
She's mine now.
Kara lifts Lena X in her arms and flies away from the DEO, leaving Lena hurt and exposed, she sees the looks of suspicion on the agents, but especially on Alex so she just walks away silently. Minutes later she finds herself in her lab reading the plans she made to get back at Kara and with the press of a key she eliminates them all, including Project HOPE.
She replays over and over again the words that Nazi Lena said to her and this leads her to gulp down the whiskey in the bottle and when she leaves it halfway down she throws it against the wall screaming. Staggering she goes to her room and starts searching until she finds the watch under all the mess. She presses the button and waits. Seconds later Kara lands on her balcony, but she's not alone, the other Lena is with her wearing Kara's clothes and this makes her blood boil.
"Lena, are you okay?" Kara hesitates to approach and this hurts Lena.
"No, I'm not okay."
"She's drunk." Lena X says to Kara. "And jealous."
"What?" Kara looks at both of them with surprise.
"The fucking Nazi's right, I'm jealous!" she yells making a still surprised Kara jump. "I'm the one that should be wearing your clothes, not her who you've just met."
"We've known each other for a week." Lena X. clarifies.
"Shut up!" Lena yells at her and she just laughs. "Why are you doing this to me, Kara?"
"I didnt......" She comes out of her astonishment. "I'm just helping her, she saved me from being used by the Nazis, they wanted her to cut my heart out to give it to my evil doppelganger."
"My General." Lena X says. "Or at least she was."
"Yeah, and I... I didn't think you'd want to see me again."
"Kara..."
She doesn't finish her sentence, a portal opens above them and out of it, Overgirl emerges landing in front of Kara throwing a punch that Kara easily stops since Overgirl is still weak. She is furious and her jaw is trembling with anger and pain in her eyes, she looks directly at Lena X who is just as shocked as Kara.
"Give me Lena." She snarls.
"No way!, so you can just kill her? Never." Kara pushes her away and shields Lena X. "Now you have the power in that world and you can heal your heart without being judged, what do you want Lena for?"
"Because she's mine!" she shouts and looks past them. "You already have yours, why do you want to have both?"
"Hey, I hadn't thought of that." Lena X jokes and Kara looks at her with a gesture of, 'Really?'
"What? I've never been in a threesome."
"Lena!" Overgirl fiercely calls out her name.
"Kara's right, what the hell do you need me for? You already have everything you craved, plus, I want to live."
"Because I love you." She finally says it and Lena X frowns angrily. "I love you and I can't live without you, the power I now possess is of no use to me if I don't have you by my side."
"You don't love anyone else but yourself." Lena X removes Kara's arm to confront her. "So don't lie to me just to take me and execute me as your trophy." Overgirl's eyes are red with pain. "LEAVE!"
"No!" SHe grabs her by the shoulders.
"Tell me...." HER voice cracks. "Tell me, what do I need to do to get you back with me?"
"Rip your heart out." She says it without thinking and alarm sets on her eyes when she sees Overgirl direct her hand to her chest.
"If that's what you want."
Kara, Lena and Lena X watch as Overgirl's hand vibrates from the speed. She doesn't take her eyes off her Lena at any moment to show her that she will do it. And just as it's about to pierce her skin, Lena X stops it from her wrist.
"What?" Overgirl looks weaker and weaker. "Didn't you say you want my heart?"
"Why is it only when he died that you profess your love? You're a coward, Kara." After many years she calls her by her name.
"Because we are now free to love each other and be leader in our Earth, I'm so happy these heroes did the dirty work for me." She smiles mischievously looking at Kara. "I want you to be my Queen,
Lena."
"I think you should give her a chance or you'll regret it like I do." Lena finally speaks and they both look at her. "Do you want to look pathetic like me?"
"Hell no." Lena X says with
distaste.
"Then go with her to that Earth of Terror."
"It's not that bad." Overgirl tells her smiling. "Maybe Supergirl can take you one day, I promise not to murder you."
"That's nice of you, but I hate Nazis."
"Me too." Kara says.
"Okay." She looks at her Lena. "So, you're coming with me?"
"Fine." She rolls her eyes and Overgirl smiles. "But on the condition that you accept the heart I designed for you."
"I give you my word."
"Perfect." She gives her a kiss and then turns to look at Kara. " Thanks for feeding me, I loved chatting with you."
"Me too, despite you being evil" Lena X reaches over to give her a kiss on the cheek. "Uh oh..."
"Goodbye, Supergirl."
"If you return to my Earth as a hero..." Overgirl says. "I'll give you a five-minute head start to run away."
"Geez, thanks."
They laugh and both of them cross through the portal to return to their Earth where as soon as they return they do the surgery to change her heart, now everything would be different, still with what heroes consider evil, but with more freedom, yes, it is somewhat confusing.
Kara and Lena are still on the balcony not knowing what to say until the brunette quickly moves to give her a hug and then kiss her. Kara reciprocates by wrapping her arms around her and when they separate, they smile and close their eyes, putting their foreheads together.
"Don't go looking for another Lena." She warns and Kara laughs as soon as they pull away a little.
"I promise."
"And now, kiss me again."
"But first I have to tell you something." Lena arches a curious eyebrow. "I love you."
"I love you too."
They kiss again and that's how that strange day ends, where Kara had to spend the afternoon with a more cynical, albeit evil, version of Lena. She will never forget that world, but something tells her that she will be better off now, just as she is better off kissing Lena on her Earth where she hopes to kiss her for many years to come.
