Chapter 1: the begining

Chapter Text

Chay was kept away from the spotlight. Anytime his family's presence as the rulers of the angel realm was needed he was told to stay home. As the second son he was kept inside the palace walls. He was not to leave under any circumstances. He'd snuck out exactly one time with his older brother Porsche.

They'd been caught quickly but the hour that they'd spent running around had been everything to Chay.

When Chays opened his door to his brother he'd smiled, Porsche had been gone for 6 months on a business trip. Chay didn't know what he did on said trip but his parents always said Porsche was important, and if he left Chay alone for months at a time all Chay could do was keep his loneliness to himself, his brother was working hard so Chay didn't have to. Chay sometimes wished he wouldn't.

"Hia! You're Back!"

Chay threw himself at Porsche and hugged him, the impact making Porsche stumble but only just.

"I missed you nong." Porsche ruffled Chay's hair,"How was it?"

Porsche let go and moved into the room as Chay resumed his position on his bed.

"The same as always. Nothing exciting ever happens to me."

Porsche grabs a bag out of Chay's wardrobe and sticks a shirt in it, then some pants.

"Oh, but there was a ball while you were gone! I didn't go. Well I did but I had to hide so people wouldn't see me. I mainly just watched everyone from the gardens. There were even some demons there! Why were there demons I thought we were at war or something? Anyway it was like um… Masquerade themed? So I did try to go in. I really wanted to dance and I thought a mask would help me blend in so no one would recognize me! And I mean no one did but… People kept trying to talk to me and I didn't know what to say when they started asking who I was and so I ran away after like ten min- What are you doing?

During Chay's story, Porsche had stuffed as much as would fit of Chays clothes into his bag, and then pulled out a small pouch which made clicking noises and stuck it on top.

"Chay… Have you seen Pa or Mae lately?"

Chay shakes his head.

"Chay, what I'm about to say I need you to know I wouldn't say it if I didn't think it was the only way, you understand I would never abandon or leave you right?"

"Hia, what are you talking about?" Chay didn't like where this was going. Why was Porsche suddenly talking about leaving Chay behind?

"Are you going somewhere again? For how long? You just got back! They can't send you away again! It's not fair Hia!" Chay started crying.

He loved his brother but he was left alone often if Porsche wasn't around, he understood why Porsche had to leave from time to time but that didn't mean it got easier being left alone. His parents often except to tell him to stay inside practically ignored him. He never blamed them for it. They had an entire realm to run. Porchay couldn't demand their attention as much as wanted to, what right did he have to steal it from others who needed it more than him? So what if he got lonely, he could manage it. He'd gotten used to it.

"Chay. Chay!" Porsche shook Chay to bring him back,"I'm… I'm not going anywhere… You are."

Chay sniffled,"Huh? What do you mean? I don't want to go anywhere without you."

Porsche gave a teary smile,"They want… Mae and Pa they… There's a war going on Chay, or at least there will be soon if nothing is done. The demons and angels, we've been fighting for centuries you know, but lately there have been fights breaking out. Angels found dead all along our borders, some even in the cities. Our parents, they have been talking with the demon King. They want to make an alliance between us."

"An alliance?" Chay had been kept out of not just the public eye but also out of the loop on any thing happening in the realm, locked in the castle all day it's not like he had any friends to gossip with.

He'd had had one, once. Ohm. A servant boy who had been nice to Porchay, more than just as a Prince he'd treated him like they were friends with no status in between them. He'd been sent away to accompany Porsche on a meeting and never come back. That was years ago now.

"They want a marriage, to strengthen our ties. If there's a union between our realms any wars will be quickly put down as we'd be united."

"Isn't that good though? No wars? Who's getting married?"

"No. Chay,” Porsche's voice cracks,"They want to marry you off to Prince Khimhant."

"Me?" Chay squeaks and his eyes widen.

Porsche kneels in front of Chay,"But I will never let that happen! I promise! I'll keep you safe."

"Can you tell me about him? Prince Khimhant?"

"It doesn't matter you aren't marrying him! I refuse to send you to him. He's a monster Chay, the youngest son of King Korn, everyone says he's the worst of the three princes, if he were to ever become king he'd become a tyrant and slaughter us without hesitation or mercy! I won't let that happen. I tried to convince our parents to send me instead but they refused. They said they wouldn't send me cause I was the heir and you were ex-" Porsche cuts himself off,"It doesn't matter what they said, take this bag. I put money in here. If I can't convince them you have to leave Chay. Please, I can't lose you. Please."

"Hia, I don't want to get married." Chay whispers, wiping the back of his hand across his cheeks.

"You have to leave. Come on, we don't- we don't have much time before they come and get you."

Chay nods his head and stands,"How long will I have to leave for?"

"Just until I can convince them that this marriage is a bad idea. I promise the second it's called off I'll come get you. There's another thing. Just so you stay hidden, drink this." Porsche hands Chay a vial of blue liquid,"It will temporarily lock your powers so no one will be able to track you.”

Chay nods and takes the vial.

There's a knock on Chay's door,"Prince Pichaya! Your presence is requested by the King and Queen."

"Shit!" Porsche exclaims, he grabs Chay's hand and jumps out the window.

"Hia!" Chay exclaims.

"No time!" Porsche brings out his wings, grabs Porchays hand and jumps out the window, behind him he can hear Porchay's bedroom door being broken in and a shout for guards to chase after them.

Kim was playing his guitar when he received the summons. He hated family meetings. There was never anything interesting, the same old thing every time. So when he tries to avoid going he's surprised that his father specifically requests him.

As the youngest of three sons, Kims not all that important. Tankhuns the oldest, but with his… eccentricities his role as heir was passed onto Kinn who has taken to the position with ease. Which leaves Kim.

Kim had no real role in being a prince of demons. Sure he had the title but nothing else. He could spend his days doing nothing at all and no one would say a word. He could scream and attack the staff and face no repercussions. He got away with not attending important meetings or keeping up with the politics of the realms (He did but he'd never let anyone know, better they think he's just some lazy spoiled prince.) Except today.

“What are you doing here?” Tankhun eyes him like he’d never stepped foot in a meeting before, and well in at least the last 2 years he hasn’t had to.

Kim ignores the question and pours himself a drink.

Kinn gives Kim a small nod of acknowledgement but other than that makes no attempt at talking to him.

“Khimhant! How nice of you to grace us with your presence,” his father says.

Kim sits at the table, and takes a sip of his drink.”You requested it.”

“Well now that everyone's here, we can begin. The 'peace' between our realm and the Angels has been rocky for some time. I have been corresponding with the Kittisawasds for a solution to keep it, and we’ve finally reached an agreement. A marriage.

“Marriage?” All three brothers ask.

“Between… who?” Kinn asks.

Oh. Now Kim understands why he was asked here. Kinn is to be married and their father probably wanted everyone to celebrate.

“Well, it was decided that it would have to be between someone of high standing. But, it wouldn't be much of a peace treaty if it was between random high ranking officers would it? So we came to one conclusion. Only a marriage between our heirs would do.”

“So you offered one of us up like some trophy husband? Are we to just go there and live by their rules? I won't! It’ll have to be one of you two I refuse!” Tankhun screams.

“A marriage?” Kinn sounds pained, and the look on his face would make Kim think he’s
constipated,“But… If it's the only way… I understand, when is the wedding?”

Korn merely hums,”It's best to have it as soon as possible. No date has been chosen but I suspect sometime within the month.”

“A month.” Kinn whispers. Probably unintentionally.

“Less than, but yes, and you needn't worry. You’ll be staying right here.”

“They agreed to send their heir to live here? Not worried we’d treat their precious little prince like a prisoner?” Kim questions.

“No, I agreed to send someone. But it won't be Kinn. He’s too important, what good would it do to send my next in line? No.”

Wait.

“Well it’s not me either!” Tankhun screeches.

“No, not you either. Khimhant, you are to be married to Prince Pichaya by the end of the month.”

Fuck.

Kim tries to stand up, but his legs give out and he falls to the ground.

“Guards,” Korn says, and two demons haul Kim up by his arms,”Take him to his room. You will not be running away from this Khimhant. I suspected you’d try to run and hide so I drugged the whisky. You’ll be weak and without your powers until your wedding. As soon as everything has been finalized we will have the wedding and you’ll be sent to your new home.”

“What? I don’t even get to meet my husband? ” Kim spits the last word out.

“Can’t have you ruining anything now can we?”

Korn nods his head and Kim is dragged back to his room.

The guards throw Kim onto his bed and leave.

Kim screams, frustrated.

He lays motionless on his bed for half a day before he finally gains feeling in his legs again, the first thing he does is try to use his magic to leave. It doesn’t work. Kim paces the room trying to come up with an escape plan.

It takes him the rest of the day to remember something. A gift from his mother. A portal. She had died when he was still young and Kim had only few memories of her. She’d always tell him about her life before she’d met his father. Her life as a human. She’d tell Kim of how she’d like him to see the human world, and on his 8th birthday she had given him a portal to the human world, as a promise to one day visit it together.

She died before they could visit.

Kim digs through his wardrobe. All the way at the back is a box filled with small trinkets and mementos. An orb.

It’s a one time use. Once he leaves he won't be able to come back.

Kim smashes the orb on the floor.
