Creatures of the Night

Summary:

Everything in Yoko's life was amazing. She had amazing friends who supported her and whom she supported in turn. Even if she found best friend's girlfriend a bit creepy, she still supported her relationship and had seen that same creepy girl express emotions that Yoko had been positive she wasn't capable of feeling. She didn't have to worry about having hot food on her table or money. But by far the most amazing thing in her life was her girlfriend Divina. They were inseparable, and were known to be one of the IT couples of Nevermore.

Or at least they had been.

Chapter 1: When the Night is Darkest

Notes:

I saw a piece of art on twitter about Yoko wanting to date Wednesday after Enid broke up with her despite Wednesday being Enid's mate. I also read user EmilyWritesStuff's small oneshot on this ship and got immediately hooked. Not sure how long this one will be but updates will be very inconsistent at least at the start as I want to focus on my main story, but I had to get something written as this has been consuming most of my thoughts as of late. More notes at the End.

Chapter Text

Everything in Yoko's life was amazing. She had amazing friends who supported her and whom she supported in turn. Even if she found her best friend's girlfriend a bit creepy, she still supported her relationship and had seen that same creepy girl express emotions that Yoko had been positive she wasn't capable of feeling. She didn't have to worry about having hot food on her table or money. But by far the most amazing thing in her life was her girlfriend Divina. They were inseparable and were known to be one of the IT couples of Nevermore.

Or at least they had been.

Yoko was sitting in her outcast biology class watching as the seconds ticked by on the clock. The day had been a bore and the substitute teacher in charge of the class was the textbook definition of superiority complex. She clearly wanted to be viewed as the undisputed ruler of the classroom and any perceived threats to that idea were stomped out immediately. That would be fine with Yoko if she could chat once she had finished but any and all attempts at socializing were met with threats of relocation to the back of the classroom. She had finished the packet that was assigned to them over an hour ago but had seen what happened to the poor bastard that tried to turn it in first. Brent was widely regarded as the smartest kid in the class, so it was no surprise when he was moving to turn in his packet just twenty minutes after it had been handed out. For all his academic smarts it was clear that the boy lacked any common sense. Yoko had been like that once, top of the class always first to turn in her assignments, but unlike Brent, she had decades of experience to learn when it was best to wait it out and let someone else turn their packet in first. Watch what awaits them lest your speedy completion be rewarded with yet another packet.

So she waited, with little more to do than sit and twiddle her thumbs. To outsiders, it was often assumed that since vampires lived for so long waiting for an hour and a half would be easy. It seemed everyone talked about how much time seemed to move faster once they had grown older, and they were right it did seem to move at a heightened pace at least for the first few decades. After a while though it seemed time slowed back down to a crawl just as it had felt when she was actually sixteen. The thought of texting her girlfriend to pass the time had occurred to her, but the idea had been swiftly shot down by the substitute whose gaze was constantly scanning looking for signs of someone texting.

Not only that but Xavier had been removed from the classroom for focusing on drawing rather than his work. Yoko didn't sit close enough to the boy to know if he had finished his work and was simply passing the time or if he had elected to draw instead of doing his work. From his argument with the substitute, it seemed to be the former. So she waited with nothing to do. Eventually, her mind drifted from the classroom and the different genes that produced each notable type of outcast, from faceless to werewolves, and to the much more entertaining thought of her girlfriend.

Their three-year anniversary was in two months and Yoko was going to pull out all the stops to make it their most memorable one yet. She already had a dinner reservation set at the fanciest restaurant within an hour's drive and she planned to purchase tickets for a movie that Divina seemingly couldn't stop talking about wanting to see. Yoko was also in the process of renting out an Airbnb where they could spend the weekend before returning to school. She still needed to figure out what she was going to wear on the date but she had two months to decide and she planned on taking Enid out to Jericho to peruse the shops in search of a new dress.

Or a suit?  She would have to think about which she wanted to go with.

*ring* *ring*

"Fucking finally." She mumbled as she stood from her seat, the metal feet of her chair scraping across the floor.

She stuffed her notebook and binder into her backpack before making her way to the front to turn in her packet. The substitute had a disgusted look in her eyes when she noted the tattoo on her right hand.

"Isn't the female's uniform at the school supposed to have a skirt?"

"I hate skirts so they made an exception." Yoko smiled at her as she placed the packet into the tray.

Once she was finished she turned and headed out into the halls. Sadly her last period was on the complete other side of the campus to her dorm room meaning she had a sizeable walk in the sun before she could relax with her girlfriend. As she walked her hand fished around in her pocket searching for her phone.

"Hmm?"

There were no new messages which struck her as strange. Because Divina didn't have any classes after third and it was normal for Yoko to walk out of her fourth period with a sea of messages from her girlfriend. She couldn't describe why but she had a sinking feeling in her stomach. Her pace hastened as her mind swirled with scenarios and images of Divina laying passed out, or doubled over a toilet purging the contents of her stomach. Yoko was normally very laid back and certainly not one to speed through the hallways in an attempt to make it back to her room as fast as she possibly could. But not today, today she was sprinting through the hallway and slinging herself around corners in hopes to return to her partner's side even a millisecond faster.

Despite her supernatural speed and the blur of students and candles around her as she passed them, she felt sluggish as she navigated back to her dorm room. Ophelia Hall had never felt so far. It didn't help that the day was particularly sunny restricting her options to the shady paths built for vampires in the event of overly sunny days. She wished she had brought her umbrella with her so she could cut through the sunlight without it affecting her stamina or speed. The sun didn't outright kill vampires it just slowed them considerably draining their energy and giving them really bad sunburns if any of their skin was exposed. But by far the worst part about the sun was the effect it had on their eyes. Without particularly dark sunglasses the sun would fry their retinas in mere minutes leaving them blind for the rest of their lives. So she stuck to the designated paths despite it being the longer route.

As Yoko entered Ophelia hall she passed by a blur of bright colors next to a blur of darkness.

"Yoko is everything okay?"

She heard Enid yell out to her but she didn't have time to respond she needed to get to her room yesterday. She scrambled up the staircase almost crashing into walls and students more times than she'd like to admit. She let out a locomotive of apologies and excuse me's to all of the students navigating the staircase beside her. She put some real thought into transforming into a bat to make navigating the cramped space easier, but ultimately decided against it as she wanted to make sure her backpack and the items inside remained in her possession and she didn't trust a lot of the student body to not just take something that was left sitting by itself. She fumbled with the phone in her hand as she tried to call Divina in the hope the girl might pick up the phone and her worries could be cast aside.

Her phone rang and rang but no one picked up. It only served to worry the vampire more as she reached the top of the stairs and the door to her room came into sight. This was the only time she regretted asking for a room close to Enid's as it meant she had to ascend the entire staircase. There were many positives that came with the room like being mostly by themselves as not many students had opted to take a room so high up. Not only that but she had been able to comfort her friend on full moons and particularly hard days. Not that she needed to anymore Wednesday it seemed was in the position of comforting her friend now that they were officially dating.

Yoko barely managed to slow herself enough to not slam into the door as she fumbled with inserting the key into the lock. She finally managed to get the door open swinging it open harder than she intended to in a rush. Her eyes scanned the room until they fell upon her girlfriend sleeping peacefully in the bed. Her worry washed away in an instant as she smiled at the sight. Divina's bare shoulder was sticking out of the bed which Yoko found odd as the siren normally slept in an old T-shirt. She took a few steps forward placing her key onto its proper hook on the wall.

There was a strange scent in the air, one that reminded Yoko of the girl's locker room after a particularly hard gym class. Something was off, Divina wasn't normally one for mid-afternoon naps, but she did normally crash right after they'd had-. Yoko's eyes shot back to the bed. To her horror, there was another head peeking out of the covers. It was another siren one that Yoko shared a few of her morning classes with. Yoko's phone fell out of her hand its screen cracking against the hardwood floor at her feet. In all her wildest nightmares she never thought that there would come a day where she would catch her girlfriend in bed with someone other than her. She felt disgusted her stomach threatening to expulse her lunch, and at the same time, she couldn't stop staring. Her body was frozen and no matter how much she wanted how much she tried to walk away she couldn't, all she could do was stare. She stood there for a few minutes that felt like centuries she could make out the noise of Enid coming down the hallway and entering her own room. The noise of Enid's door shutting snapped her from her daze. She quickly snatched her phone off of the floor before turning and walking towards her door stopping one last time to look at the girl who had been the love of her life. As an act of rebellion, she slammed the door shut on her way out.

She mindlessly wandered back down the hallway stopping outside the door to Enid's room. She lightly knocked on the door hoping her friend would be quick to open the door before her soon-to-be ex-girlfriend came out into the hallway. The door swung open and Enid had a look of confusion on her face but stepped aside to let the vampire in.

"Hey Yoko what brings you-"

Yoko collapsed into Enid's arms sobbing. Her emotions finally won over the control she had over her body.

"Hey what's wrong?" Enid sounded worried.

"Di- Divina with. With another." Yoko cried the words out between her sobs, unable to bring herself to finish the sentence.

Notes:

I didn't realize how much I put myself into the shoes of my characters, but when I was thinking of this chapter and thinking about being in Yoko's place legit almost made me cry.
