Chapter Text
Texas couldn't or wouldn't look at her, He knew that the girl that he cared for was gone or she made him believe she was gone. When Texas looked at her, he could only see the pains of they're passed and it killed him. The girl was no longer the little child who looked up to him for guidance and support; she looked at him with anger and grief, she couldn't fathom that the man sat right in front of her.
Texas was known for his short temper though many knew that only a few people could calm him down enough to explain himself, those two people being his siblings Florida and California. Before they were part of the United States of America they were Mexico's children. While they had different fathers Mexico raised them equally or so Texas thought. You see Florida's father was from Spain while Texas and California's father was from the United States, they were raised completely differently, while Florida and Texas were raised to be wild and free to a degree, California was not she was Mexico's daughter which meant the rules were a little stricter.
Texas and Florida remember California very differently from one another but they both share one thing in common which is that California was very motherly with both of them to the point that when they became states they didn't see her as their sister but more as a second mother.
Since Mexico had so many children, California, even though being the youngest of the three, took the role of a mother figure for them, It left her without much time for herself. One day she decided she would go and have some time alone riding a horse, so she left early in the morning before the sun even rose. Both Texas and Florida remember their time with Mexico very differently but when they would always reminisce about their childhood, but one topic never seemed to leave their minds and that was their sister.
One memory in particular is probably the only clear one that Florida remembers is that he had woken up to a letter from Cali saying she would be back , that she was going to take a trip on her horse and to not panic since she would be bringing supper from her journey. He remembers waking up in Texas having breakfast then going to the family farm and milking the cows and feeding the animals, he didn't even remember Mexico saying she wouldn't be able to get the eggs since she would be leaving for a meeting, In hindsight he should have known since California wouldn't be in the house till later that everything would be going to hell. When Florida made his way to their house he found Texas on the verge of tears and one of their many siblings laughing at him. He should have also known that since Cali wasn't here all hell would break loose since she kept everyone in check, even her father. Thinking of Cali and Texas's father he hadn't shown up for a few weeks, Texas looked a lot like his father while California looked like a mix of both, America had long black hair that reached his back when it was braided when it was lose it was near his thighs, his eyes had a downcast look to them that gave him a softer look from his sharp features. He also had tan skin with tattoos on his arms depicting different things, on his back were two of the largest scars on his whole body, he said that he had gotten them from before he was part of the colonies. His eyes were a mixture of different colors depending on the person he was with, when he was with Mexico and his children his eyes were a mixture of blue, green, and brown. When America was with the colonies his eyes would be red, the red of all the lives that the king took. Texas's eyes were a light brown with hints of dark blue like the night sky while his sisters' eyes were gold with hints of blue like her dark waters.
Mexico was a beautiful woman by many standards and everyone knew that. Mexico had dark brown hair that reached her knees when she let it down from her braids, her skin was the color of mocha, and eyes as beautiful as the Continent itself. Many people even believe that Mexico had gotten her beauty from Spain but only the ones who knew her like America would know that her beauty came from her mother and her people. Mexico's mother was said to have eyes that could change into anything they wanted whether it may be like lush green from her mountains or the colors of her flowers, Mexico's eyes had the same effect so it was no surprise that her children would be able to have the same eyes as their grandmother right?
Wrong, only two of Mexico's children had their grandmother's eyes and those two were also America's children. While Florida never took into consideration that his siblings were different their other siblings did, which in turn led to many fights about how they should have had their grandmother's eyes since they were the firstborn, but genetics don't work like that. In the end, it caused a huge rift between Texas and California with their siblings.
Back to the topic of why Texas was on the verge of tears one of the younger children decided that early in the morning was the best time to start a fight which led to stuff being thrown at Texas. Texas being one to anger, threw a spoon at their sibling(for some reason). This led to their sibling talking about California and how if they did something they would not help them, which mind you was wrong since California defended Texas as if he were her child to the point that when Florida thought back to that memory it reminded him of how she reacted when someone insulted Big bear and Sacramento.
Looking back on that memory it also reminded him of another time when Miami had visited the state house and ran to Cali as if they had not talked for over a decade. It was like just seeing their aunt made everything, every hurt they had endured made everything go away.
Florida thought it was better to just forget about that memory in general since it just brought some old hurts that he never wanted to talk about…. Or maybe it was who to talk to.
