It Was A Bad Idea (Calling You Up)

Summary:

Life is unfair. Dazai would know that better than anyone. He was taught that fact the moment he could understand what words meant. The world is cruel and doesn't care what it takes from you.

He ran away from the Port Mafia in a panic, hoping that maybe he'd be allowed the happiness that had been robbed from him at such a young age. He has a new purpose now, a reason to keep moving forward. He joined the light to better himself and leave behind his past for his little Angel. An angel he would rather die for than see get hurt.

But as people like to say, it's only a matter of time before your past catches up to you. You can never truly run from your past. Everything he spent four years building starts crashing down around him quicker than he thought it would. Now he had to face his demons head-on, protect the one thing he truly cared about, keep the Armed Detective Agency out of his messy life as much as he could, and tell Chuuya to shove it where the sun didn't shine more times than he would like.

Dazai Osamu, Demon Prodigy and former Port Mafia Executive, will do anything to keep his bloody past from touching the one light in his life. He can't run away anymore, and funnily enough, that scares him.

Notes:

Hello readers!

This chapter is the backstory of what drove Dazai to leave the Port Mafia, as I changed a bit of the reasoning for the book plot! This chapter is pure angst, so be prepared for that, my fellow readers!

This book will be pretty angsty and eventually have more explicit scenes in the chapters, so if that doesn't float your boat, I'm sorry, but this book probably isn't for you. Also, tags will be added as the story progresses, as the story's progress is just as much of a mystery to me as it is for you.

With that all said and over this, enjoy the first chapter!

Chapter 1: The Beginning Of The End

Chapter Text

Dazai Osamu was an omega, believe it or not. He tried to hide it as best as he could because he never would have been able to fill the role of an omega properly. He was not your stereotypical omega to begin with, the ones that many betas and alphas alike salivated over. He was bony, tall, and did not possess the kind-hearted, good-natured personality that omega’s were described with. He was never taught to be loving towards others. He was not taught how to show mercy or how to care for those around him with a compassionate heart as omegas do. He was a monster lurking in the shadows, something that people feared, a fate worse than death. He was Dazai Osamu, the Demon Prodigy.

It had never bothered Dazai before because why would something as fickle as his second gender bother him when he had no reason to dwell on it in the first place? His second gender was something that Mori had forced him to look over, beating out any and every omega-driven instinct out of his system, so all that was left was a broken mindset and suppressed urges that most omegas had and acted on. He even went as far as to force Dazai to mate with another Port Mafia member, so his heats wouldn’t be a problem anymore as well. He had someone to take care of them for him, someone to make them more bearable and shorter.

Which brings Chuuya up, said Port Mafia member Dazai was forced to mate with. Much like Dazai, he contradicted what it means to be a stereotypical alpha. He was short, caring, and looked to fit a more omega role than an alpha one. Even so, Dazai had fallen for the short alpha, even if he knew his feelings would get him nowhere in the end. Chuuya did not care for Dazai in the same way that the omega did. They may have been mates, but Chuuya never saw the brunette as his lover. Even if they spent their heats and ruts together, at the end of the day, all Dazai was was his partner. They worked well together, covering each other's blind spots perfectly and moving together like a well-oiled machine. They were a fearsome duo, one dubbed ‘Soukoku’. Mori decided they would be good mates, too, dooming them to a loveless relationship that they would never be able to escape.

Why could they never escape this loveless mateship? Because they both bore the mate marks on each other's necks, bounding them together until one of them dies. No force could ever break that bond, no matter how bad the two might want it. You are stuck with each other until the very end. It was something that many people dreamed of, finding that special person whom they would spend the rest of their lives with, raise children with, and love with. It was human nature to want a companion, someone to rely on when the going gets tough. But you weren’t allowed to have those in the Mafia. It was seen as a weakness and something that someone could take advantage of. It was no place for love or pretend to play family in.

So when Dazai realized that he was pregnant, he didn’t know how to react. He stared at the pregnancy test as his hands shook with fear, his fingers turning white with how tight he held the piece of plastic. He was scared. That’s all he could feel at that moment, his blood rapidly rushing through his veins as he tried to process exactly what that meant for him, what that meant for his baby. His child would surely be used for the Mafia’s benefit because why wouldn’t Mori take advantage of a prime opportunity to make the Port Mafia stronger? This child would be a mixture of two of the most feared, dangerous members of the Mafia. It was perfect for Mori, training the child from a young age to surpass their parents and become the successor after Mori dies. They would be doomed to a life of heartache and pain, always wondering what was wrong with them as they stared out over a city that they only knew as cruel. They would be merciless and cruel, brought up that way by the sick bastard who only believed in power and control over others. This child might as well be the spawn of Satan itself.

How would Chuuya react? He didn’t even love Dazai. How would he react knowing that the omega that he was forced to mate with was now with child? Would his child grow up in a loveless home, knowing that their father never wanted them in the first place? Would they be ignored by Chuuya altogether, always wondering why their father never even looked at them? The thought made him cry out in pain. Dropping the pregnancy test to the floor with a clatter, he wrapped his arms around his midsection as if he were trying to comfort the child in his womb, who really had no idea what was happening around them. They were but a fetus at this point. They only knew silence and peace, none of the horrors this world had to offer just yet. Soft cries left his throat, tears dripping down his cheeks.

He could get an abortion, but that made him cry out in pain once again at just the thought of doing that to his unborn child. He didn’t want to lose something so precious, even if that seemed selfish. He would surely be dooming this child to a life of pain, but Dazai had never been allowed to have anything of his own. This child would be Dazai’s. Dazai’s to raise and see grow up, Dazai’s to love and hold and protect, Dazai’s to teach about the world and show them the few beautiful and wonderful things they had to offer. Dazai wanted that, even if he knew it wouldn’t last long. Nothing he held dear ever lasted. Always ripped out of his scarred, broken arms and cast away. He looked down towards the pregnancy test with blurry brown eyes, looking at the two lines that surely changed his life forever.

He was selfish, and he knew it.

Dazai never told Chuuya. He never could get the courage to tell the alpha about the child growing inside him. Chuuya never seemed to feel the change in the bond, or how Dazai’s scent was slowly turning into that of a pregnant omega’s. His Cherry blossom scent slowly began to sweeten, now accompanying his original scent with that of the stench of buttercream. It was weird when Dazai first noticed it, but a smile formed on his lips as well, placing a hand on his stomach in the dark room he sat alone in at the time. It was the confirmation he needed to know for sure he was expecting. He wore scent blockers out in public more now, making sure that there was no trace of his scent on any of his clothes as he left for work each day. He still wanted to keep unexpected news to himself, even if he knew it wouldn’t be long before Mori figured it out.

After all, he started showing, a small bump forming just below his belly button. It wasn’t too noticeable yet, easy to hide, but soon it wouldn’t be easy, and he would have to come clean. He’d have to tell Chuuya that he had known and tell Mori he was pregnant. He dreaded the day that that would happen. He can see Mori now, eyes glinting with that look he held when he was scheming, his hands folding together as his elbows rested on the desk, a Cheshire smile forming on his face as he stared at Dazai. He still doesn’t know how Chuuya would react, but he knew it wouldn’t be good either way. He had hidden it on top of everything else, if he hadn’t been happy with the news of Dazai being pregnant initially, he surely would be furious to learn he had hidden it for as long as he did. He was reaching his three-month mark now, way past the time he should have told Chuuya.

Though he knew Chuuya expected something was wrong. He hadn’t had his heat in that time. He’d catch the red-head giving him worried looks when he thought he wasn’t looking, his eyes scraping across Dazai as if he was looking for something that looked out of place, something that could explain why Dazai had skipped almost three months worth of heats in a row. Mori, like usual, watched from a distance, but he knew he was also curious about the answer, waiting for it to reveal itself when it was time. Neither ever approached Dazai and asked what was wrong, so Dazai would keep his lips sealed for as long as he could. He knew it wouldn’t be long when Akutagawa approached him about it, the two training in an abandoned warehouse much like every other time Dazai decided to train his prodigy.

Akutagawa had been kneeling on the ground, his head lowered as he took raspy breaths, blood dripping off his forehead from when Dazai forced his head to make contact with the concrete floor below them. He looked up, his silver eyes slightly teary and uncoordinated from the pain he was feeling, silently wiping the back of his shaky hand over the corner of his mouth where more red liquid was escaping. “Dazai, I have a question for you, if you will allow me to speak.” His voice was timid as he spoke, barely reaching the older of the two, who only stood a few feet away. Dazai stared down at him from where he stood before the kneeling teen. He had his arms crossed, his eyes blank of any emotion as he stared down at the young omega. The brunette was silent for a long time, only staring into Akutagawa’s eyes and tilting his head to the side, watching the fear and wearyness fill them. When Akutagawa finally looked away from him, he spoke, his voice echoing in the space around them.

“What is it.” It wasn’t a question. It was a demand. A demand for his subordinate to hurry up and spit out whatever it was he wanted to say to him. Akutagawa flinched at the voice, his head once again bowing to him as he stared at the reddened concrete below them.

“I-I’ve noticed your behavior as of late, Dazai, and I would like to ask if you are okay.” He paused, but he didn’t dare look up at Dazai. His eyes were glued to the ground. If he had looked up, he would have noticed Dazai’s usual dead-looking eyes shocked to life, revealing his fear and frustration. Dazai didn’t know why he reacted the way he did to the simple question, but before he knew what he was doing, he raced forward, pulled his gun out, and pressed it to the top of the teen's head, pressing the end of it against his skull in a threatening way. Akutagawa made no move to defend himself, staying put on the ground and not daring to look up at his mentor. The only indication of how the younger omega felt was the slight tremors and the way his breath slightly picked up. He was trying to control himself, keep himself from freaking out, and lashing out against the executive. Dazai couldn’t pull the trigger, though, his index finger sat snugly against the trigger, but it never squeezed it. He couldn’t force himself to squeeze it. He stared down at Akutagawa, the two deathly silent in the barely lit room.

He took his gun away after a few long seconds of standing, his instincts forcing his actually to think of his actions before they played out, how he would actually hurt if he killed Akutagawa if he pulled that trigger right now. He blamed his hormones for this in his head, let a long sigh leave his lips, and pulled the gun away. “It’s inappropriate to ask people of higher rank to your own such a sensitive question, Akutagawa.” He spat his name out, watching the heavy flinch it earned him. “Next time, you will die.” It was eerily silent, the raven looking up towards the omega with a tint of fear now present in his eyes, but he simply dumbly nodded, not daring to do more. Dazai had left after that, not sparing the younger a chance to do anything else but that. He didn’t look back, letting his true emotions flicker through his eyes as he left the warehouse.

He knew he’d have to be better at hiding his secret if he didn’t want anyone to know yet. Akutagawa was young, barely in tune with his instincts or what certain instincts even meant. Because of this, Dazai was assigned to him. Mori believed it would be easier to ‘erase’ his second gender instincts if another omega did it, leaving Dazai no choice but to use physical violence and harsh words with the teenager. Even so, you could never truly suppress instincts and it showed in Dazai now and even Akutagawa. Akutagawa knew something was amiss, he knew something was wrong with the other omega because he himself was one. Even if he didn’t realize it yet, his omegan side had figured out what was going on, and it was only a matter of time until he put the pieces together. He’d have to try harder at acting like nothing was wrong because if a young omega could figure it out, it was only a matter of time until the others did too.

But of course, there was one man that he couldn’t keep any secrets from, someone who seemed to be able to read Dazai like a book. Oda Sakunosuke, or Odasaku as Dazai preferred to call the older beta. He took one look at Dazai and squinted his eyes at him, looking him over with those hazel eyes that seemed to know everything, and when Dazai ordered a virgin drink, Oda looked at the young omega as if he had grown two heads. “Okay, what’s going on.” Oda turned towards Dazai, his eyes still squinting at Dazai as he looked him over. “You’re acting strange.” Dazai must have looked like a deer in headlights at that moment, his hands stopping from messing with the bandages on his wrists to look over towards him with huge brown eyes. He quickly smiled, forcing any shock off his expression for that of the laid-back personality he usually used.

“Whatever do you mean, Odasaku?” He leaned back in his seat, throwing his hands behind his head as he crossed his legs under the bar. Oda only raised a brow, not looking impressed.

“You can’t fool me, kid. I know something’s up. You ordered a non-alcoholic drink and came in here not acting a fool- You not ordering a non-alcoholic drink alone is unheard of. Still, you coming in here calmly and not wailing about how Chuuya is being unfair to you or how Mori had doubled your work for tomorrow on top of that is just terrifying.” Odasaku pointed a finger at him as he spoke as if trying to make Dazai understand why he looked suspicious to him. Dazai nervously chuckled, leaning forward so his elbows landed on the bar.

“W-Well, I haven’t been feeling like myself lately.” Dazai quietly says, a soft smile forming on his tired face. Oda stayed quiet for a moment, his eyes looking over the younger's face, probably for some type of clue as to why Dazai was acting the way he was. Dazai looked over towards him, his eyes surely devoid of any emotions in them, a blank look that shook most people to the core. But Oda only scooted closer, not away as most would, his chin falling into the palm of his hand as he stared at Dazai.

“No, there's more to it than just that.” Dazai let out a frustrated huff, rolling his eyes as he looked towards the bartender setting his drink down before him. He picked it up, taking a sip from it, before setting it back down and making eye contact with the beta again. He was still staring at Dazai intently, his hazel eyes looking over Dazai’s body language as if it were the most interesting thing to observe at that very moment. He paused at his midsection, his eyes squinting again as he stared. Then, his eyes widened, and they reached Dazai’s once again. Dazai quickly realized what he had been staring at, bringing his black coat closer to his body.  “Oh my god.”

“It’s not-”

“Oh. My. God.” Dazai let out a frustrated groan, slumping forward and letting his head hit the bar with a thud. He stayed that way, his arms crossed over his midsection and eyes refusing to open, squeezed tightly shut. Odasaku still sat beside him, completely silent, probably trying to find the right words to say to the young omega. “Dazai, please tell me I’m wrong. I’m wrong, right?” His words were soft as if he was trying to comfort Dazai as he asked his question. He felt a hand being softly placed on his shoulder, a small squeeze slowly grounding the omega. Dazai wanted to cry, curl up into a corner, and hide away from the chaos of his life. It seemed he couldn’t catch a break because no matter how hard he tried acting like everything was completely normal, he knew the people around him knew something was wrong. He knew they had their speculations, and he knew they wanted to ask questions, it was only a matter of time before he got approached and was forced to answer them. “Hey, Dazai, it’s okay.” Odasaku pulled Dazai into a side hug, trying to comfort the panicked omega from causing a scene in a public space. “It’s going to be ok.” Dazai numbly nodded, leaning into the olders grip to keep his mind from wandering to dangerous territory.

“I don’t know what to do, Oda. What do I do?” His voice was weak and small, his throat closing in on itself as the words left his mouth, his dead eyes staring forward as he leaned his head against Oda’s shoulder. The beta said nothing to answer Dazai’s begging question, only gripping his shoulder a little tighter as he laid his head against Dazai’s. Because who would know what to do in this type of situation?

When Dazai made it home, he was emotionally drained. All he wanted to do was curl up in his bed and let sleep take him away for a few hours before he had to wake up to the nightmare that was his god-forsaken life. But, of course, the universe decided to once again shit on him. It was dark and quiet when he opened the door to his shared apartment with Chuuya. He assumed that Chuuya wasn’t home, and it seemed the alpha was never home. It was just how it was. Chuuya never stayed the night in their shared apartment; if he did, it was very rare. An occurrence that only happened once in a blue moon. He slipped his shoes off, wiping at his tear streaked face after, before taking his coat off of his shoulders to chuck at the floor in frustration. He made his way to the kitchen, opening the fridge rather aggressively, might he add, and shoving some stuff around as he tried to find something decent to eat.

He hadn’t eaten dinner, too occupied with speaking with Odasaku about his pregnancy at the beta’s apartment, where no listening ears would have been able to overhear their conversation. He pulled out some jelly and peanut butter in defeat, shutting the refrigerator door behind him with his foot as he went to flick the kitchen light on. He wiped at his face one last time before flicking the light on and screeched, dropping the continents he had in his arms in the process, as he looked over and saw Chuuya Nakahara staring at Dazai with his arms crossed over his chest. He looked furious, his blue eyes piercing Dazai as he stared at the omega. “And where have you been all night?” Dazai only blinked at him, his brown red-rimmed eyes taking in the fact that Chuuya was home and staring at him with a disappointed look on his face.

“I-I-I-” Dazai didn’t know what to say, still blinking at the red-head with unbelieving eyes. Chuuya paused himself, looking him over and then letting his once-angry expression soften. He unfolded his arms, his brows furrowing as he took a few steps towards Dazai, a hand outstretched towards him, only to stop his movements and pull his hand back.

“Have you been crying?” Dazai’s mind went blank, staring at Chuuya with his mouth hung open, still unable to speak. It was as if his throat closed up, not allowing any words to enter the air around them. The omega decided to ignore the alpha’s question, instead leaning down to grab the two jars he had previously dropped, wincing when he realized the jelly jar had, in fact, been made of glass. The red jelly was smeared everywhere on the kitchen floor, the glass mixed in and surrounding the contents. He started picking up the mess quietly, hoping Chuuya would leave him alone if he kept quiet. How wrong he was. “Dazai, don’t ignore me.” His voice was firm, stopping his movements as he pressed his lips tightly together. He felt his hands tremble, his pieces of glass pressing against his skin, threatening to slice it open. Two hands came into his vision, grabbing him but his collar and forcing him up onto his knees, Chuuya’s face inches away from his own. The alpha looked puzzled as he stared at him, his dazzling blue eyes searching Dazai’s desperately, looking for something that he would never find. His eyes narrowed at the omega, the two orbs looking down at the shirt he currently was strangling. “Who’s scent is that on you, Dazai? Because I sure as hell know that’s not mine.” His voice dripped with venom, his hands tightening more around the collar of his shirt as he brought it closer to his nose. “Where you out seeing someone, Dazai?” the brunette’s eyes widened at the accusation, forcing his way out of Chuuya’s grip and onto his feet, the glass in his hands forgotten as he felt them tighten around the sharp objects.

“What? No, why-”

“Then why is that beta’s scent all over you? I can smell it from here, wafting off of you. Were you at his place? Is that where you were this whole time? Were you getting railed at that beta’s fucking apartment while I sat here wondering where the hell you were?” Dazai’s mouth fell open, eyes as wide as saucers at the alpha’s words. How in any world could Chuuya believe that he would do such a thing? He knew Chuuya cared very little for him, but he knew the alpha knew he cared about him. He knew he was one of the few people that he allowed to wiggle their way into his cold dead heart. How could he accuse Dazai of doing such a thing? Was it any of his business anyway?

They were not romantically involved in any way, Chuuya happily ignoring that they were mates unless it was for ruts or heats. They ignored the mate marks, the fact that they were bound together for life, and how Dazai felt about the alpha. As if none of it mattered or existed in the first place. Dazai’s hands trembled as he stared at the redhead, who still stared at the brunette with so much hatred that he felt his eyes start to water once again. “How-” Before Dazai could even get a word out, Chuuya quickly began to speak again, his eyes holding so much fury it was beginning to scare the omega.

“That’s fine. You’re doing perfectly fine then, right?” Dazai paused, blinking at the alpha and finally managing to close his mouth. “I was going to talk to you, see what the fuck was up with you lately- because I thought you not having a proper heat in almost three fucking months was a cause for concern, you’re behavior for a while, has been concerning, but I think I understand now! You haven’t been spending them with me- you’ve been off fucking around with- with- WHOEVER THE FUCK THAT SCENT BELONGS TO!”  Dazai flinched at his tone, curling in on himself as Chuuya drew closer, once again getting in his face. “Do whatever the fuck you want, I don’t care. But don’t come to me for help anymore. I never wanted to be mated to a useless omega such as yourself. If I could, I’d leave you in a fucking heartbeat.” Chuuya paused, his eyes holding nothing but fury and disgust as he stared at Dazai. “Why don’t you go back to that beta’s apartment, huh? Bet he misses your ass already, wouldn't want to keep him waiting!” Chuuya turned away after that, making his way to the door and slamming it shut behind him, leaving Dazai once again all alone.

Dazai only bowed his head further, curling in on himself as he wrapped his arms around his midsection, his whole body shaking as he held back sobs that desperately wanted to be let out. He sat on the floor, holding his knees as he finally let go of the pieces of glass that had been in his hands, his bloody fingers digging into his pants and staining them. He stared ahead, tears sliding down his face as he stared in one spot, replaying Chuuya's words repeatedly in his mind. All he could think about was how he couldn’t tell the alpha about their child.

“Please, Odasaku, Don’t leave me,” Dazai begged, his forehead pressing into Oda’s own as tears fell off his cheeks and onto the older’s face. The beta held the back of the omega’s head, pulling him closer as his ragged breath slowly worsened. “I don’t know what to do. I’m scared. Oda, please. Please, tell me what to do.” The beta pulled away from Dazai, his hazel eyes meeting Dazai’s terrified pair.

“Go to the light, Dazai. If not for yourself, then for that kid.” His voice was ragged as he spoke, his grip of Dazai slipping. The omega stared down at Odasaku in shock, his brown eyes wide open as he processed just what the beta meant by that.

“O-Oda?-” A horrid cough ripped out of Odasaku, his eyes unfocused trying to meet Dazai’s again. He failed and instead stared up at the ceiling.

“You deserve better cards than you were handed, kid. I’m sorry I can’t be there to help you any longer. You shouldn’t have to go through this alone.” Dazai let himself cry out as he said those words, leaning more into Odasaku’s touch. “Get out of here while you still can, make a better life for yourself, live, and raise that kid right.”

“Okay, Odasaku.” His voice was small as he spoke, his tears beginning to blur his vision. As the light faded from Odasaku’s eyes, the smile he held did not. He stared at Dazai with so much hope it broke Dazai’s heart.  His grip on his head failed him, his hand loosening the bandages around his eye and pulling them free. He cried, holding Odasaku close to his chest, curling in on himself as he mourned the loss of yet another precious thing that was ripped away from him in this hideous, cruel world.
