Breakfast in Bed

Summary:

Karlach wakes up to Shadowheart serving her a healthy breakfast.

Notes:

It is March and with that Multiamory March has started. I will work my way through the prompt collection with stories centered around either Halsin/Kantei/Tav/Astarion/Themberchaud, or in some cases the polycule of Wyll/Karlach/Shadowheart/Lae'zel/Nocturne. Because these characters need a lot more love, and the polycules deserve more love as well.

Prompt for today: Caring

This is yesterday's story. I did not get around to posting it due to being sent to the hospital by my doctor. It is just a short little story focusing on Shadowheart and Karlach, which I thought would be kinda sweet.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Karlach sighed, as she woke in a soft bed. It had been a darn while since she last had. Sure, she didn’t mind sleeping on just a bedroll, but darn, a soft bed was real nice for a change. She stretched, allowing herself to doze off for another while. She did not even notice that she was alone in the bed – or rather the entire room. Nah, she only noticed that, when the door was opened.

Someone giggled lightly. “You’re still sleeping.”

Squinting, Karlach could see Shadowheart in the doorway. “I don’t know. Am I?”

Another little giggle. “You are silly.” Shadowheart came over to her, and only now did Karlach realize that the tray that her girlfriend was carrying was meant for her.

“Breakfast in bed?” she asked, surprised.

“Yeah,” Shadowheart replied. “I don’t know if you remember, but you got hit pretty good yesterday.”

Karlach tried to remember. Yeah, something that happened. Right. Some Sharrans had been attacking them. They had managed to fight them off, of course, but yeah, Karlach remembered that some summoned guardian bonked her pretty good over the head. “Darn,” she muttered. “That explains the headache.”

Now that she was thinking about it, she also had no fucking clue where she was right now. Or how they had gotten here. But another question was more important: “Where’s Wyll?”

“Don’t worry,” Shadowheart quickly assured. “Wyll is downstairs. We are with some farmers. He is helping out just a bit.”

“And we… randomly got here?”

“Kinda,” Shadowheart replied. “I healed you, but you were kinda delirious, so we looked for a place to stay. We came across this farm. The people were kind enough to let us sleep here.”

“Huh.” That kinda explained a lot, Karlach assumed.

“Well,” Shadowheart said, kissing Karlach between her horns. “I made you breakfast.” Then she paused and winced. “Alright. No. Not quite. The grandma here made the breakfast, but I cooked down some apples.”

Karlach smiled, looking over the tray. It was mostly just some porridge with some apple sauce over it, as well as some tea. But it was nice. It was homey. It kinda reminded her of that old home that had been destroyed even before Gortash had gotten to her.

“Thanks, Squirrelheart,” she whispered. “This is… surprisingly nice.”

Shadowheart grinned. “Surprising?”

“I mean, I expected to wake up in some cave or something. Not in a nice bed, and with some breakfast served to me by a hot cleric.”

That got an outright laugh out of her girlfriend. “Well, aren’t you glad you took me along?”

“Of course I am!” Only after a moment another thought came Karlach. The thought that Shadowheart felt probably real bad for the entire Sharran thing. Because those Sharrans had probably been after her, as that stupid goddess of night, shadow, or whatever had declared her like the public enemy or something.

“You know,” Karlach said, “for you I would always jump in front of some assholes.”

Shadowheart sighed. “I know. Because that’s the kinda woman you are, aren’t you?”

“Exactly,” Karlach replied. “Come here.” She pulled the cleric close to press a kiss onto her forehead. “I love you. And it turns out that the fact you came travelling with Wyll and me had been like one of the best things about this entire thing.”

For a moment, Shadowheart struggled against the hug, but in the end she gave up, leaning against Karlach. She did not speak, but Karlach could feel the woman relax against her.

She noted, that both of them could probably use a good bath. Given it was winter and they were travelling, their last proper bath had been a few days ago, and they both smelled kinda sweaty. Maybe those nice folks who owned this place would allow them to use their bathtub.

“You should eat, while the porridge is at least warm,” Shadowheart finally said.

“Do I get some cuddles afterwards?” Karlach asked.

Shadowheart looked at her, one eyebrow raised. But in the end she gave a long sigh, smiling again. “Yeah. Alright. We can cuddle a bit. But afterwards at least I’m gonna look what Wyll is doing, alright?”

“Yeah,” Karlach gave in. “Sounds fair.”
