Work Text:
Stephanie’s never properly celebrated Easter before, at least, compared to how others do. Her dad never cared much for the holiday, claiming it was a bunch of Catholic nonsense. Her mom tried to make it fun for her, but with the small amount of money they had it was hard. Her mom would find old plastic eggs from her own childhood (there weren’t very many) and would fill them with what loose change she could find, and even candy if she could get any, and hide them around their small apartment. When Stephanie was ten she started taking her to Robinson park for the Easter egg hunt the Wayne’s would set up for the people who couldn’t do a normal Easter. It was fun and all the eggs were full of the most expensive brands of candy, but her mom couldn’t always take her.
And that’s what made this first Easter with the Wayne’s so interesting. They’re all in the kitchen standing at the counter, from left to right it’s Dick, Damian, Tim, her, Cass, and Jason. Babs is sitting by Bruce, and Helena filling up Paper mache eggs with confetti while Alfred and Kate work on dinner (Jason had wanted to help but Alfred insisted that Jason did what Jason had called the “childrens activities” with his siblings”. It’s been about a year since Bruce was returned from the Timestream, and he’d decided to do some Easter things for “family bonding”, and Dick almost cried when Stephanied had mentioned how she used to celebrate (prompting Cass to say: “I guess brother does not want to hear how I did”).
So here they are, dyeing eggs. She has three bowls in front of her, purple, blue, and yellow (her colors plus two of the original Batgirl colors) Dick has blue, red, and green, Jason has red, orange, and blue (he said it was the colors of his friends plus himself, prompting Tim to ask “what friends”) Tim has yellow, green, and red (Robin’s colors, how original) Cass has purple, blue, and black (God only knows how you make black food dye) and Damian has blue, black, and green (he’d said it was the colors of “the only respectable people here”, and “black is Pennyworth’s, not yours, Father” RIP Bruce).
“Wow, Steph! Your eggs are coming along great!” Stephanie almost screeches as a loud, deep voice sounds from behind her. “Dick!” She groans. “Don’t scare me like that, I almost spilled this!” Dick laughs and throws an arm around her shoulders. “But ya didn’t!” He responds cheerfully. “I will smash this egg on yer head.” She warns, holding up a purple and blue egg for emphasis. Dick puts his hands up in mock surrender before going to bother Jason.
She huffs and goes back to her eggs before she feels a small jab to her left rib. She snaps her head towards the only person who could’ve done it–Tim. “Go easy on ‘im.” He says with a light tone. “He’s just excited, it’s your first proper Easter and Dickie just wants to make it count.” Stephanie smiles at that. “I know, I know, ‘s just… a lot.” She admits. “I’m not used ta such… excitement, or doin’ so much. As you know I’m used to just doin’ egg hunts ‘round my small apartment.” Tim shrugs and holds up a red and yellow egg, examining it. “I understand, the others can get pretty overwhelming during holidays, especially if it’s your first time celebrating it–or properly celebrating it.” Stephanie blinks in surprise. “You’re rich! How could you not properly celebrate a holiday?” He laughs. “My parents were never ‘round long enough for that, sure they’d wish me happy holidays but I couldn’t properly celebrate most on my own. Which is why Dick and Bruce went all out for my first Christmas.” He leans in towards Stephanie as if about to tell her a secret, she does the same. “Even if Christmas is harder to celebrate after watching Santa die.” He then moves away to resume dyeing his eggs as if he hadn’t just made Stephanie bluescreen.
Before she can even finish processing… that, Cass is shoving an egg in her face with a big grin. “Sister egg.” She announces proudly as Stephanie takes the black and purple egg. She looks at Cass with a grin only to see her holding up a blue egg with yellow parts (she’d seen Cass go over to Damian earlier, but hadn’t thought anything of it till now) “Big sister egg.” She says, placing it down on one of her egg holders. Stephanie places her own Spoiler themed egg from her pseudo sister on an egg holder as well.
Stephanie looks at the assortment of food items in wonder, she’d never had so much food on Easter–or ever! Alfred seems to notice her excitement because he hands her a plate first with the encouraging words of “Go ahead.” which is all she needs to hear to start piling up her plate with all the food her pseudo grandfather and pseudo aunt had made for them all.
She sits down between Damian and Cass with her piled up plate–although her own mountain is nothing compared to Cass’. The siblings’ decorated eggs all sit as decoration on the table, going down the center with all the decorative plants, and such. She looks to her side to see Damian without the scowl permanently affixed onto his face, instead a more calm look, showing his guard is for once let down. Across from Damian sits Dick, who has Jason on one side and Babs on the other, and at Babs’ side sits Kate, who has Renee Montoya next to her. By Cass is Tim, and by Tim is Helena. At the head of the table is–of course–Bruce, and at the other end is Alfred. The atmosphere is calm, for once, and everyone is exchanging peaceful conversation, throwing jabs at each other and interacting as a real family would, because they are a real family, something Stephanie has come to learn. A family that will only keep growing, and she can’t wait to be there as it happens.
