Chapter Text

Kim Dokja looks around and finds his incarnation as he strides towards Lee Jihye, Lee Gilyoung, and Shin Yoosung, who are in a half-sphere of protection. He briefly hears the oldest of the three shout for Shin Yoosung to run with Lee Gilyoung on her back.

Kim Dokja swats the monster that was towering over the teenager and children. He yells for Lee Jihye to move and run with Shin Yoosung, but she’s just staring at him with a wonderous expression and a beat-up face. He reaches out for her as she sways.

Kim Dokja misses her as he calls her name, “Lee Jihye!”

Lee Jihye falls to the ground in a heap.

Kim Dokja sighs.

_____

“Ahjussi?” Kim Dokja glances behind him from where he finished setting Lee Jihye’s bones. He finds his incarnation with Lee Gilyoung barely hanging on her shoulder. She looks a bit roughed up, especially compared to Kim Dokja’s own shiny state, but what else could he expect from a child in the apocalypse?

[Your incarnation, Shin Yoosung, is looking at you.]

She sets down the boy on the floor—roughly, Kim Dokja notes—and sprints at him with all the energy she could muster to her Constellation; her father. “Ahjussi!”

She runs into his arms with a wide smile and tearful eyes. Kim Dokja smiles as he pats her head with his hand, almost caressing it how lightly he was touching it. “I’m sorry. I’m late, aren’t I?”

He feels strangely sentimental as he smiles at her. She cries out, “You are late by a whole week!”

Kim Dokja frowns at this, thinking back to how he had not intended to be waiting to revive for a week. He holds the crying child in his arms, thinking about his plans and how different they will be now that he’s a week behind.

Down the hall is Han Sooyoung, who is laying on the floor in the middle of monster carcasses. She glares at the ceiling, “Why is that bastard not back yet?”

[A hidden scenario has appeared!]

Han Sooyoung tilts her head, gritting her teeth slightly. “The fuck?”

Starting in five minutes....」

'What is this bullshit?'

Kim Dokja sighs as he tries to keep Lee Hyunsung away from him, pushing away the kneeling man. He glances behind him, uneased. The (wo)man is still there. Kim Dokja has a quiet thought, 'Pink kids... it should work if it’s the right one.'

_____

Han Sooyoung sits down, looking at the time on the scenario. 5... 4.... 3.... 2... 1...

Han Sooyoung tenses as she feels probability stinging her flesh. She stands up quickly, looking for any threats. She finds herself transported to a moderate room; it almost seems like a living room with how there’s couches surrounding a huge TV screen and snacks laid out.

One by one, Kim Dokja’s companions pop into existence, in various poses. Lee Jihye is lying down on the ground; she seems to be tearing up in her sleep. Lee Hyunsung looks traumatized as he stares at the floor with a faraway look in his eyes. Jung Heewon expression is of mild confusion before rage filters through Jung Heewon’s expression. The other two kids appear, the girl has tears in her eyes as she falls to the ground onto a boy about her size. The boy wakes up not too soon after.

Next to come is Yoo Joonghyuk, he looks around and finds little interest in anything but saying in a loud, irate voice, “Where’s my sister, you prick!”

「Incarnation ‘Yoo Mia’ hasn’t made a sufficient bond with Kim Dokja and his companions to take part in the scenario.」

「She is safe.」

Yoo Sangah appears with a fearful gaze. She looks ready to say something before she sighs quietly and stays silent.

And, of course, the man himself. “Kim Dokja.”

Kim Dokja frowns as he looks up from his phone. His face looks clearer today. At least, Han Sooyoung thinks that until he looks off to the side and his face blurs again. Said man smiles at the looks of devastation, happiness, and rage on his companion’s faces.

He looks up at the screen. And, like clockwork, the rest of his companions follow his gaze.

「Hello incarnations, and the lonely unnamed Constellation! Before we begin, would Kim Dokja-ssi like to be present during the broadcast or only hear it while doing something else?.」

Kim Dokja grimaces and Han Sooyoung realizes that Kim Dokja didn’t know this would happen. Kim Dokja sighs to himself and looks at his company with a grin, “What do you think, everyone? Should I stay with you, or should I just listen to it?”

Shin Yoosung and Lee Gilyoung almost at once protested about him leaving. Kim Dokja hums as he pats them on the head. His sword and shield protested as well, just a more adult version of it. “Don’t go, Dokja-ssi. Dokja-ssi just got here, doesn’t he want to stay for a bit?”

“Kim Dokja, we have to talk after this. I’m not leaving you out of my sight.” Jung Heewon said this with an angry tone.

Kim Dokja gives a small smile. “Ah, try not to gaze at me too hard, Jung Heewon-ssi. You might drive a hole into me.”

Kim Dokja looks towards the screen again and with a cold tone he says, “I’ll be staying here.”

The words change into a new phrase,

「Good choice.」

Kim Dokja frowns as he moves out of the kid’s grasps. “Might as well get comfortable,” He turns to them, looking over his shoulder as he walks towards the couches. “Right?”

Jung Heewon races to sit on the edge of one of the couches, just where Kim Dokja was looking to sit. Kim Dokja instead makes enough room to sit between his incarnation and Lee Gilyoung. They sit next to him happily, hugging his arms. The couch is three quarters filled. Lee Hyunsung goes to sit down next to Lee Gilyoung but Han Sooyoung sits there before him.

Lee Hyunsung looks sad but sits next on the couch next to Jung Heewon. He also puts Lee Jihye’s body on the couch he sits on, just on the opposite side. Yoo Joonghyuk sheaths his sword before sitting next to where Yoo Sangah sat. It was also coincidently on Han Sooyoung’s side. Han Sooyoung has half a mind to call everyone out for making Kim Dokja look like the leader of a mafia.

Kim Dokja crosses a leg over the other, before realizing that only seems to make Lee Gilyoung whisper-yell: “Look! His body is facing me, which means he likes me more than you!”

Shin Yoosung whisper-yells back, “Nuh-uh!”

Kim Dokja quickly makes his legs even, making sure his legs don’t touch the kid’s legs while doing so, but is unfortunately squished. He glares without heat at the two women on either side of him; Jung Heewon and Han Sooyoung.

He ultimately decides not to bother and just slowly untenses his body onto the comfortable couch. The words seem to darken into a darker blue; instead of their sky, neon blue.

「We will now begin. So, with that being said, buckle the fuck up and let’s have some fun.」

「First person up: 'Yoo Sangah'.」

Yoo Sangah makes little noise as her thoughts of Kim Dokja appear. Kim Dokja glances at her and she looks beet red and with a face full of realization. She seems to have caught him looking at her since she gives him a small smile. “Don’t worry, Dokja-ssi, nothing bad!”

Kim Dokja was starting to become a bit worried. 'If it’s not bad, then what would cause her to become embarrassed? Sure, her thoughts are being broadcasted, but nothing she can’t handle.'

He, of course, is wrong with that final decision, as he always is when it comes to feelings. The lights dim as the screen becomes bright with Yoo Sangah and Han Myungoh.

He gets a good look at his pathetic body from before the apocalypse. He realizes quickly that he and Yoo Sangah are at his old job at Minosoft. They get to hear her thoughts as she is approached by someone only a few remember.

'Han Myungoh is approaching me again. He’s not even in the same department as me.'

She’s then courted by said man. She talks easily, even if her thoughts don’t carry the same politeness. Past Han Myungoh speaks, “Your bike is lost, yes?” He has a grin on his face like he knows something about it. “Why don’t I give you a ride home?”

Yoo Sangah politely declines, “Ah, no thank you, Han-nim.”

Yoo Sangah turns from him to one of the four kitchens. 'Is there tea in here? Maybe I could put pepper in the coffee maker again...'

She runs into another person; someone she’s only seen around his own cubicle and barely spoke to anyone. He has helped her on multiple occasions, though. She smiles lightly, mostly due to genuine feelings, “Dokja-ssi.”

Kim Dokja barely glances up from his phone, his long eyelashes flutter. He pauses and looks up from his phone and cup of water that the company provides. He gives a small smile in return, almost nervous, “Sangah-ssi from HR.”

Yoo Sangah is unfortunately followed by Han Myungoh so he interrupts the peaceful moment. “Why won’t you give your senior a chance?”

Kim Dokja quickly looks away, back to his phone as he usually does. Yoo Sangah holds a small resentment towards it, as much as she is curious about what he reads. 'Dokja-ssi looks pretty today, with his slim figure and glittering eyes. I hope he eats enough, as he always seems to decline my invitations to get something during break.'

「Have a break.」

Yoo Sangah puts her head in her hands. Kim Dokja carefully avoids eye contact with everyone but the kids, who are desperately wanting to know when this was. Kim Dokja can pick out Jung Heewon’s confused yell, “Actually, Sangah-ssi isn’t wrong. Why does Dokja-ssi look so... pretty but ill in her perspective?”

Kim Dokja doesn’t say how he only ate instant ramen once or twice a day back then. He doesn’t say that he never looked so pretty as he seems to look from Yoo Sangah’s perspective. Kim Dokja levels a stare on Yoo Sangah and she seems to notice since she looks up with a mildly horrified look on her face. Kim Dokja sends a small smile, “I ate enough, and I didn’t think I had someone thinking I was pretty.”

The voice speaks up.

「It’s simply her perspective at the time. These can be altered at later times, but these have become more alike to core memories.」

Yoo Sangah hides her face again, “No comment.”

「Let’s get back to it.」

Past Sangah pops up again, just on a subway most of them were familiar with. Yoo Sangah listens to her thoughts being broadcasted to everyone.

Yoo Sangah smiles as she spots Kim Dokja, who’s reading on his phone again, on the subway. 'Better to sit next to someone I know.'

Yoo Sangah grins lightly as she speaks to him, “Oh my, Dokja-ssi is going to be sucked into his phone at this rate.”

Kim Dokja looks up, confusion tainting his expression. He blinks before replying, “H-hello.” His voice sounded like it hadn’t been used in weeks with the crack in his voice.

Yoo Sangah was curious, sue her. “Are you headed home, Kim Dokja-ssi?”

Kim Dokja replies with little hesitation, as if he had planned on just that, “Yes. Is Sangah-ssi heading home, too?”

Yoo Sangah nods, “Yes, I was lucky that my team manager was away on a business trip.”

She sits down next to him, and she notices the white and black text on his screen. 'Oh, so he is reading.' He physically flinches at her proximity. She pretends not to notice.

Yoo Sangah stares at him for a few seconds before he replies. She looks at his eyes filter to his phone after each sentence, as if he’s waiting for a message or a notification of some sort. He looks back at her, eyes shining with their depths. “Does Sangah-ssi usually take the subway?”

Yoo Sangah shakes her head, “No. I usually take my bike, but it got stolen.”

Kim Dokja’s gaze is curious, and she gets the impression that Kim Dokja is almost peering into her. A weird conclusion, considering Kim Dokja is notably not great at noticing things. For example, the looks he gets from women and men in his own department. Kim Dokja tilts his head, “Oh? You bike to work?”

Yoo Sangah smiles, “Yep! I’ve been working a lot of overtime, so I thought I could use the exercise. That and among a few personal reasons.”

Kim Dokja nods and stares at her for a few seconds, much like she just did. Yoo Sangah stares back in his eyes, taking note that Kim Dokja never once looked below her neck for any other reason but to look at his own phone.

「Have a small break.」

The lights become alight.

Kim Dokja hums, “An interesting observation.”

A few of his companions' glower at him, to which he sends a small shrug, “What? I meant of me being curious.”

Yoo Sangah seems to have recovered. Kim Dokja nods at her and she sends one back hesitantly. Jung Heewon throws an arm around him, over Shin Yoosung. It was uncomfortable for Kim Dokja. “Dokja-ssi, you jerk, you never told me that Yoo Sangah had a thing for you.”

Kim Dokja hears an embarrassed squawk, and he shakes his head. “Sangah-ssi was just analyzing me,” He looks at Jung Heewon with a glint in his eyes, “Does Heewon-ssi think I’m pretty?”

He says it with a teasing tilt, but Heewon lets go of him, and grumbles, “You’ll have to wait for my turn, then.”

Lee Hyunsung sends a look of protection to the duo. Kim Dokja is unsure who was going to receive that protection.

「Let's get back to it, incarnations and Constellation.」

Yoo Sangah looks amazed as she looks at Kim Dokja’s turned back. “Who are your favorite authors? Mine are Murakami Haruki and Raymond Carver!”

Kim Dokja did not look amused, and instead looked horrified at the idea of sharing the author he liked, “You probably wouldn’t know even if I told you.”

Yoo Sangah looks at Kim Dokja as he looks at his phone. He looks zoned-out. Yoo Sangah has a worried tone in her voice as she calls his name, “Dokja-ssi?”

Kim Dokja turns to her with a small smile, “Come to think of it, it's already been almost a year since we started working at the company,” He looks at her with a blank expression and Yoo Sangah stares back, looking at his features. 'Long eyelashes that were surprisingly fitting with his slender frame. During Spring and Summer, it was even more highlighted without his blazer. His eyes seem to hold the sky in them. Truly, a night sky as they twinkle.'

Yoo Sangah is brought back by his flinch and mildly surprised smile. “Time sure does fly, doesn’t it?”

Kim Dokja smiles back, “We didn’t know what we were getting into back then, huh?”

「Take a break, incarnations and Constellation.」

Kim Dokja had a light flush on his cheeks before 「The Fourth Wall.」 took it away. Yoo Sangah wasn’t fairing much better with her head in her arms. Han Sooyoung tries to tease Kim Dokja relentlessly but is only met with a mild look of annoyance

Lee Jihye woke up sometime in the middle of the memory. She is rightfully confused.

Words pop back up again.

「Would Kim Dokja’s Company like to continue watching Yoo Sangah or would you like to watch someone else?」

Yoo Sangah feels a wave of relief wash over her. Perhaps it was a little too soon, as she is met with a few people—namely Jung Heewon, Han Sooyoung, and surprisingly Shin Yoosung—begging to continue the onslaught of her thoughts about Kim Dokja.

Kim Dokja looks down at the children in his arms. They look back at him with matching smiles. He smiles back at them as he pokes both of their noses. “Have you two been thinking trash about me?” He says it with a teasing tilt, and they protest.

“How could ahjussi say that?!”

“Hyung!”

Kim Dokja taps their arms and heads before letting them both hold onto his arms. He looks up at the screen, “Ah, seems that they came to a decision.”

「We will continue with Yoo Sangah then.」

Yoo Sangah sighs into her hands before looking up with a small smile, “I’m both quite grateful and embarrassed.” She glances at Kim Dokja and Kim Dokja, already looking at her, smiles and nods to her. She smiles back, more genuinely than the last.

A few of Kim Dokja’s companions have moody auras as they glare at the screen and Kim Dokja (un)respectfully.

「We will continue, then.」

Yoo Sangah feels a stone in her stomach. “Was everything planned from the beginning?”

Kim Dokja looked passive as he looked from Kang Ilhun to Yoo Sangah. “I thought there was a high probability. As soon as the station opens, two groups will unite and attack. It was a prior promise.”

His face looked innocent, even as he said such dark things. Yoo Sangah couldn’t help but slip something out, “Saying things with such a good face...” She mourned the shy Kim Dokja who couldn’t present for the life of him.

'It’s truly too bad that it wasn’t a real alliance. Why did only some of my alliances stick? Dokja-ssi for example...'

Yoo Sangah frowns. Kim Dokja seems to notice. He looks at her, but Yoo Sangah can’t see his face clearly. “Did you want the alliance?” He seems to know her answer before she even processes the question.

Yoo Sangah responds honestly as she admits, “...A little bit.”

Kim Dokja’s expression doesn’t change from its neutrality. “Don’t believe in people so much. Things won’t be as easy as you think in the future.” If Yoo Sangah had to put a word to the expression on his face, it would be ‘careful neutrality’.

Yoo Sangah clenches her jaw minutely, “I know.” And she does, truly, know. “Stil... if possible, I wanted to believe. I was able to get this far because I believed in someone.” She makes sure to look directly at Kim Dokja.

She felt all sorts of things for the man, but a few stick out. She feels kindness, in its most cruel form. She feels like if she tried hard enough, she could see the genuiness in his eyes again. She feels care and loyalty towards the man who supposedly saved her multiple times on accident.

「Memory ended.」

Kim Dokja is glad for the loyalty but not so much for the needless analysis. He 'knew' she was talking about him.

Jung Heewon looks close to bursting of unanswered questions. Yoo Sangah looks at Kim Dokja pointedly. 'Kim Dokja', her face seemed to say, 'be honest.'

Kim Dokja isn’t sure what he should do in this circumstance, so he stays silent, letting his companions think or speak of whatever they want.

They do, as usual. “Sangah-ssi is very trusting.” Jung Heewon grins cheekily.

Yoo Sangah smiles albeit awkwardly.

「Starting memory.」

Yoo Sangah was watching as Kim Dokja, Jung Heewon, and Lee Hyunsung talked to each other and spoke of plans. Kim Dokja was wearing different clothes, but that was neither here nor there.

Anyways, Kim Dokja was carrying a marron flag. Jung Heewon and Lee Hyunsung were asking if Kim Dokja had a title. “Should I call Dokja-ssi his Majesty now?”

Kim Dokja at once seems to disagree with the idea if his response was anything to go by, “Why would I want that? Surely, you’re joking?”

Jung Heewon laughs at him, finding humor even in the apocalypse. “Well, your majesty, if what the hidden scenario is saying is true, we should be trying to take over a station right now.”

Jung Heewon looks over at a window, unseen to everyone else. Dokja-ssi follows it, as if he knows exactly where it is and what it says. “If you value your subjects... we should get going.”

Kim Dokja glances disinterestingly at the man tied up by Yoo Sangah’s ‘wire’. “We should learn about who attacked us first. We’ll head for Dongmyo right away,” Dokja-ssi glances back at Jung Heewon and Lee Hyunsung. “Would Heewon-ssi and Hyunsung-ssi mind coming with me?”

It’s obvious that Yoo Sangah deflates at her lack of mention. She tries to involve herself, “Then I-”

Kim Dokja cuts her off with a blank expression, one she found different from his prior blank expression. It’s as if he had come across an acquaintance from grade school. It saddens her, but she listens anyways. “I want Sangah-ssi to stay here.”

Yoo Sangah deflates even more, “Oh...” She tries to give a smile, “Yes, that would... be a-” She cuts herself off, embarrassment wafting from her in waves.

She watches his expression as it becomes a small frown, as if he realized something. He steps closer, just a bit. It seemed like he was trying to comfort her but didn’t want to come too close. It seemed mocking, but Kim Dokja has slightly furrowed eyebrows and seems to want to mention something to her. “Sangah-ssi.”

She tilts her head, disappointment settling in her gut. She tries not to show it. “Yes?”

Kim Dokja has gotten rid of his prior expression for one that’s more blank. “Not everyone is good at the same things.”

Yoo Sangah nods. “Yes.”

His gaze filters towards Jung Heewon and Lee Hyunsung before settling back on her. His gaze is nearly recognizable as his eyes soften before he speaks, “Do you remember what I said in the subway? I have my reader life and you also...”

He wants her to respond, Yoo Sangah realizes a second into the silence. “I also have my ivory life...” She remembers something as she 'almost' gushes out, “Yes, I do. I even have it saved on my phone,” Yoo Sangah tries not to add the pride she feels. 'Dokja-ssi is amazing with pep talks!'

Kim Dokja’s eyes become less soft at this, as if he can’t discern why she would save one of quotes. His face obscures more. He responds with a nod, “You’re needed here.”

Yoo Sangah almost interjects before he continues, “We can’t leave Gilyoung here alone and we also need someone to watch over Gong Plidu,” Then, with thoughtful eyes, continues, “And we need someone to lead the anxious group of people.”

Yoo Sangah can’t even say anything without feeling Kim Dokja’s persuasiveness rolling over her as he continues, “We also need to defend ourselves against Hoehyun since they could come at any time. While we do have Gong Plidu, it’s never too bad to have your skills.”

They were all silent for a moment, feeling Kim Dokja come to a decision. He smiles minutely and Yoo Sangah blinks in confusion as he says with finality, “I would like to give you a title,” He addresses Lee Hyunsung and Jung Heewon with his next sentence, “What does Heewon-ssi and Hyunsung-ssi think?”

Yoo Sangah can only utter a bewildering, “What?”

Lee Hyunsung responds seriously albeit happily, “I don’t have any problems!” Yoo Sangah glances at him and he looks to be almost shining at Kim Dokja. Yoo Sangah keeps this to herself.

Jung Heewon grins as she bows. “Your majesty... your word is my command.”

Yoo Sangah looks at Kim Dokja with a confused expression as she watches his expression of mild annoyance at Jung Heewon’s antics dissipate into a small smile as he looks back at her.

Kim Dokja holds his hand out to her, and she hesitates as she accepts. “I don’t deserve this...”

[Chungmuro’s leader, Kim Dokja, has shared their authority with Yoo Sangah.]

[Yoo Sangah has become the vice representative of Chungmuro station.]

As Kim Dokja let’s go of her hand, he sends a glance around the room, as if expecting something. “I’m only doing this because it’s you.”

Yoo Sangah flushes as she has a thought. 'I hope Dokja-ssi continues trusting me. I don’t want to part from his party.'

She looks at Jung Heewon’s and Lee Hyunsung’s grins at her and sends a determined grin back. “I will do my best!”

「Take a small break.」

Yoo Sangah has a relatively calm atmosphere around her, especially compared to the previous ones. Lee Hyunsung has a small flush on cheeks. Kim Dokja wonders what for but doesn’t ask. Jung Heewon was staring at Kim Dokja and Yoo Sangah in wonder. Han Sooyoung licks her lemon candy before putting her legs across Lee Gilyoung and Kim Dokja. Yoo Joonghyuk seems passive as he stares intensely at Kim Dokja. Lee Jihye stared blankly at the screen.

Kim Dokja looks down at the children and finds that they are asleep. He squeezes their arms and mutters to them as they stir, “If you’re tired, you should go sleep where Jihye is laying down. I promise it’s comfortable.”

The kids simply don’t move after that, just lying there, blankly staring up at Kim Dokja. Kim Dokja gives a small smile, “Okay.” He sits crisscross and sets the kids’ heads on his legs. They curl up against him as Han Sooyoung moves herself to sit facing the armrest. This means that he must bear the weight of Han Sooyoung as she leans on him, legs kicking over the side of the couch.

He sighs momentarily as he feels Jung Heewon lean on him too, just with her arm around him, over Shin Yoosung’s legs. He doesn’t even respond to it as he stares squarely at screen.

「Back to the show.」

Yoo Sangah wakes up to the smell of meat and two voices speaking. She listens to them, realizing that one of them is Kim Dokja, “You have to drink this before eating the stem of the Yanaspleta.”

She hears an alto voice moan in delight as they spoke with a voice as if what they’re talking about is fact, “This is amazing. You could start your own restaurant.” 'Han Sooyoung,' she realizes. She almost frowns but stops herself to continue listening.

Kim Dokja replies in a mildly exasperated tone, “Slow down, will you?”

There’s a small silence and Yoo Sangah has a small hope that Han Sooyoung left so that she can eat something. Han Sooyoung replies to her disappointment. “Is it alright if we leave Yoo Joonghyuk with that woman? She’s the poison beauty. Can we truly trust her?”

Kim Dokja has a finality in his tone as he responds to her, “The poison beauty isn’t a bad person at heart. It’s because of the parasite that she’s like that.”

Yoo Sangah can feel someone glance at her, and by the lack of malicious intent, it must be Kim Dokja. She barely stops herself from jolting at the calling of her name. “Sangah-ssi,” A pause as she holds her breath. “I know you’re awake, come have some.”

She can feel her stomach start to growl and she barely contains it. Another pause before Kim Dokja hums. “She must be asleep.”

He doesn’t sound as genuine as she knows he can be when he wants to. Yoo Sangah can hear the shuffling of clothes. “There won’t be any left for you then,” Then, an ingenuine sound of appraisement comes from him, “Wow, this part tastes like short ribs.”

Yoo Sangah is so hungry. She springs up as she looks directly at Kim Dokja, “W-wait!”

Yoo Sangah flushes as she stares at the duo, her stomach growling. Kim Dokja sends a look she can’t see at Han Sooyoung. He speaks rudely to her, especially compared to when he speaks to Yoo Sangah. “If you’re done eating, you should get up.”

Han Sooyoung sends an unimpressed look back. “Why?”

Kim Dokja doesn’t hesitate to shoo her away. “Do I really need to tell you?”

Han Sooyoung gets the message as she takes a skewer with her as she leaves, “Whatever, you sure are annoying. Leave me some for later, would you?” 'No articles or names. Are they close?'

Yoo Sangah sinks her teeth into the meat and feels her soul ascend into the stars at the taste. So much so, that Kim Dokja sends her a look; not that he can see it. “Slow down.”

Yoo Sangah realizes she hasn’t given praises yet, “It’s delicious.” Kim Dokja has a complex expression on his face as he doesn’t respond. Yoo Sangah takes a moment of self-reflection. She glances around at the ruins. She has a sad tone in her voice as she continues a few moments later, “We... we can’t go back to how things were, can we?”

Yoo Sangah feels tears in her eyes as she chews. Kim Dokja glances at her before looking back at the blue fire. A stretch of silence fills the air, along with the crackle of fire before he responds, “It’s not your fault, Sangah-ssi.”

Yoo Sangah startles before looking back up at Kim Dokja’s slightly blurry face, a face that wasn’t blurry before the scenarios. She feels tears roll down her cheeks as she stares at the man before her.

And apparently, Kim Dokja isn’t done as he says it again, “It really isn’t your fault, Sangah.” She barely acknowledges the lack of articles as it makes the affirmation sound all the more truthful.

Yoo Sangah leans forward, meat forgotten as she leans over it. Her tears fell to the ground and meat, moistening it further. She seems to only show this vulnerability with Kim Dokja, because of course she does. Kim Dokja doesn’t say anything further, and neither does he do anything else, just letting his words hang in the air.

「Have a break, incarnations and Constellation.」

It’s silent. Kim Dokja peers at his companions and finds that most of them have an expression of shock or of sadness. Yoo Sangah smiles at Kim Dokja and he nods back with a small smile.

Kim Dokja pats the kids’ hair. He considers who might be going next when he feels Han Sooyoung shift next to him, staring at him. Kim Dokja arches an eyebrow at her. She clicks her tongue before just continuing to stare at him. He lets her do it and he is nearly startled as she touches his neck. He looks at her with an inquisitive look.

Everyone lets the silence eat at them before their salvation breaks the silence, “It’s none of your faults.”

Kim Dokja receives multiple looks of desperation and hopefulness. The only people who give him a separate emotion is Han Sooyoung and Yoo Joonghyuk, who give him bewilderment and annoyance, respectively.

He chuckles and he leans back with a smile. “Truly, do not blame oneself,” He looks up at the screen. “Blame Constellations.” They do not comment on how he, too, is a Constellation.

「Back to the diving into Yoo Sangah’s private thoughts.」

They had defeated the disaster and, to celebrate, drank alcohol. Kim Dokja and Yoo Sangah sat together as Jung Heewon sat with Lee Hyunsung, and the children; Lee Gilyoung, Lee Jihye, and our new addition, Shin Yoosung sat together. The children, of course, got juice and soda.

Kim Dokja smiles wryly, which makes Yoo Sangah internally suspicious before she feels guilty about assuming something was wrong in such a nice setting. Kim Dokja looks up towards happily talking companions, “Good job, everyone,” he says it in a somehow monotonous voice and mildly proudful tone, “You really did...” he seems to think carefully about his words before he continues, “...an amazing job out there.”

Jung Heewon smiles down at her soju for a moment, as if fully basking in the praise. It seems sad too, for some odd reason. Lee Hyunsung was staring down at the ground, past his soju. He had a light frown on his face. Contemplating, Yoo Sangah assumes.

Lee Jihye breaks the small silence with what Yoo Sangah assumes is praise, “Never mind that. You were so cool beating up that dokkaebi earlier. You looked a little cooler than master today,” After finishing her drink in one sitting, she looks back at Kim Dokja with a grin. “Didn’t know you had it in you.”

Kim Dokja blinks at her, almost in confusion, Yoo Sangah realizes. 'Does he believe his sacrifice means less than Jung Heewon’s and even my contribution?'

Lee Hyunsung is next to sing praises, much to no one's surprise other than Kim Dokja, “She’s right. You were amazing.” He looked so genuine that Yoo Sangah almost wondered how he was soldier with his soft heart.

Jung Heewon adds to him with a small grin, “I felt good just watching you.”

Yoo Sangah smiles at Kim Dokja. “You did good too, Dokja-ssi.”

Kim Dokja smiles. Yoo Sangah wonders briefly if his eyes match his smile. Yoo Sangah misses his sparkling eyes that twinkled, but she quickly notices that Shin Yoosung, who is now Kim Dokja’s incarnation, is plopping herself next to him. Kim Dokja seems to have a softer spot for her, as he doesn’t flinch away from her like he did with Yoo Sangah. Instead, he simply pets her head, almost like a doting father.

Yoo Sangah enjoys his interactions with people he likes. It has the appeal of his affection in his smile as he talks to them or displays trust in their actions. Yoo Sangah cracks another bottle of soju open and pours herself another cup of it.

Yoo Sangah blinks and wonders what time it is as Jung Heewon slurs drunkenly, “So what I did was...” She seems to stop to think for a moment before continuing with renewed vigor, “I taught him a lesson!”

Lee Hyunsung was laid down next to her sitting form, groaning as he spoke, “I can’t drink anymore.”

Lee Jihye was holding a soju bottle as she laid down next to the sleeping children and Yoo Sangah considers telling Kim Dokja about it before electing to zone back out again.

Yoo Sangah sips her cup of soju from her fourth bottle. Kim Dokja glances at her and seems to do a double take as he looks at the empty bottles. She explains herself before the question even comes, “I’m a heavy drinker.”

Kim Dokja hums. Yoo Sangah assumes his eyes have a comptemplating look in them. Yoo Sangah remembers it from the company days. Specifically, when he looked up from his phone and stared at the computer in front of him in his cubicle. She always assumed something interesting happened at home or to someone he knows. Yoo Sangah supposes she was half right.

Yoo Sangah feels sadness overtaking her as she thinks about her late teens and early twenties. Specifically, about the men around her. “I can’t afford to get drunk like that.”

Yoo Sangah feels the look from Kim Dokja is blank with a strand of understanding. Yoo Sangah smiles at him. “But I should be fine today, right?”

Kim Dokja glances away with a slight awkwardness to the motion. He clears his throat, as if the conversation had taken an odd turn. She’s not able to say anything when lightning strikes her cup of soju.

They look at the spilt soju forms a sentence with curiosity. Well, Yoo Sangah looked in mild horror, slight anger, and a tad of curiosity. Kim Dokja simply smiled as he looked in what seemed to be curiosity.

Yoo Sangah looks to Kim Dokja, who is looking at something past the sentence. She assumes it’s someone from the nebula that is supporting herself, considering the rise of anger she feels that she knows isn’t from her. She reads the sentence, 'Dionysus wants to talk to you.'

She knows who it is too, [God of Alcohol and Ecstasy], or Dionysus. She watches mildly fascinated in the way the soju simply seems to form above the ground, as it didn’t leave wet splotches on the dirt and grass. She squints at it, “I think he wants us to drink more.”

She has a sudden thought, one not of her own, but of one of her supporting Constellations, Of course he wants them to get drunk. The bastard.

Kim Dokja follows the order easily, which surprises Yoo Sangah, as she had thought Kim Dokja would never think of following what anyone, especially a Constellation, says, “Let’s get to then.” He looks up at Yoo Sangah with a slight frown. “You shouldn’t drink, one of us one should stay sober.”

Yoo Sangah glances over at Kim Dokja, he was still drinking his first cup of soju, which was probably warmed by his hand. She hums, 'perhaps Dokja-ssi is a light drinker? Makes sense why he never went to company gatherings.' Yoo Sangah slips out a question before thinking about it too much, “Can you not drink a lot, Dokja-ssi?”

He taps her soju, which he had poured for them both. “I’m a bit of a light drinker.”

A bottle later, and Kim Dokja’s face is a bit clearer, making his face easier to read. He looks flushed, and Yoo Sangah doesn’t feel the effects much. She glances down at the split soju pointing at the full bottles. “He still wants us to drink more.”

Kim Dokja is clumsier with his mind clouded with alcohol. He taps his cup harsher than they did a few drinks ago. Yoo Sangah smiles down at her soju, leaning on Kim Dokja more as the night continues. “It’s good to have someone to drink with. I was getting lonely.”

Kim Dokja glances at her with hazy eyes and flushed cheeks. His dark eyes look at her with unclear realization. He seems to have realized their proximity. The soju floats, she barely notices. The soju has finally taken its toll on her. “Dokja,” She forgets the article at the end of his name.

He answers quicker than she thought his clouded mind would, “Yes?”

She leans closer to him, almost without realizing it. Kim Dokja leans into her too. At least, that was before he jolts and flinches away from her. He shakes her, gently but firmly, “Sangah-ssi, get a hold of yourself.”

Yoo Sangah blinks, she’s a bit disappointed that Kim Dokja’s face is blurred again. She feels like she woke up from a dream, “What? Oh,” She blinks up at Kim Dokja, “Huh?”

Yoo Sangah stares at his face for a moment before turning away, holding her flushed face as she realizes her clouded mind is clearing. “Oh my. What was I doing just now?”

Kim Dokja sounds almost embarrassed, “Why don’t we stop playing? We should start discussing things.”

The floating soju stops before resuming with a skill being applied to them both.

[Personal skill, 'Other World Interpreter LV. 5', has been activated.]

Yoo Sangah reads: You’ve spoiled the fun.

Yoo Sangah almost reads it out loud before Kim Dokja responds to the message, ignoring the lighting and thunder, “If you’re that confident, why don’t you appear before us?”

The split soju moves again. I hate those dammed tentacles.

Yoo Sangah reads it out loud, mostly to herself in wonder as she reads it, “I can’t be bothered to fight them. Also, you’ll all be dead if I go down there myself.”

That’s how my father killed my mother.

Yoo Sangah’s mind is slightly cloudy, making it hard to think through his legends, so she simply asks the one next to her, “What does he mean by that?”

Kim Dokja replies like it was a normal Tuesday, which in this new world, it might as well be, “He must be referring to legend of his birth.”

Yoo Sangah blinks as her mind clears, “That’s different than what I know. His mother isn’t the princess of Thebes from what I’ve read.”

Kim Dokja glances at her with a small frown before it turns into a smile, one that’s more formal than the ones he was showing prior.

I see you know quite a lot about me.

Kim Dokja ignores the statement, “Which one is true? Is your mother the queen of the underworld or the princess?”

Is that so important to you?

Kim Dokja frowns but continues, “It is. I need that prior version to be true.”

Insolent human.

There’s a rapid flow of messages in succession of each other:

But I like rude humans. I knew someone who was as reckless as you... He was exceptionally good with the Lyre.

But things didn’t end well for him either.

Kim Dokja is firm with his response, “I will be different.”

Yoo Sangah hears rumbling of anger in one part of her brain as laughter in the other. She barely catches all the messages in the split soju.

I can open the gates of the underworld for you.

Father of the Rich Night doesn’t like me, but the goddess of the underworld will grant my request.

However, it is extremely dangerous there, and I can’t grantee that you will come back alive.

Kim Dokja is quick to answer, much to Yoo Sangah’s just as quick dismay, “That’s fine by me.”

Yoo Sangah watches as the soju floats in the last few messages: Good. I also don’t like desperate incarnations. Remember, you will only have twelve hours while there, if you don’t make it, you’ll get stuck and never be able to get back to the scenario.

Yoo Sangah gasps as Kim Dokja holds his head in pain, a small groan coming from him. She reaches for him as he falls, much like one dying would do. Kim Dokja says one last thing, as if his last words, “Sangah, wake up Yoosung and Gilyoung... and the others.”

Then, he faints. Yoo Sangah barely registers the lack of article as she yells out towards him, which wakes only Shin Yoosung, “Dokja!”

Yoo Sangah sends a regretful look towards the last message from Dionysus: I hope that Father of the Rich Night takes a taking to you.

「Let’s take a break, lol.」

A few are sitting in shock as they watch the events unfold again in their minds. Yoo Sangah flushes a light red in her hands before thinking about what could be next on the deep dive of her feelings. She hums before glancing at Kim Dokja, briefly thinking of his fate. She saddens considerably before looking towards the others.

Han Sooyoung blinks. “You almost died several times after I left?”

Kim Dokja corrects her before he thinks about it, lifting his hand enough for her attention to go to it, but not enough to wake the children. “Actually, I did die after you left,” He pauses before continuing, “Rat.”

Yoo Joonghyuk stares at him with a glare. Jung Heewon stares at him with an unreadable expression. Lee Hyunsung looks sad as he stares at his face, mumbling something that Kim Dokja can’t hear. Lee Jihye looks away from him, staring squarely at the screen. Han Sooyoung hits his stomach, and he stops a wince from escaping.

Han Sooyoung leans on him heavier than before as she stares back the screen. “Bastard.”

Kim Dokja shrugs.

Yoo Joonghyuk scoffs, but otherwise doesn’t say anything. Jung Heewon squeezes his arm and Kim Dokja sends her a small smile, “I think Sangah-ssi is almost done.”

Yoo Sangah sighs lightly, and Kim Dokja quietly relates as the screen changes.

Kim Dokja barely notices the heavy gaze on his face. Yoo Joonghyuk grits his teeth. 'Their ignoring the voice that appeared in the woman’s head. Fools.'

「Have fun with this next one, Constellation who has not yet have a name.」

Kim Dokja eyes widened. “Wait, are you talking about-”

「Starting now.」

Yoo Sangah was simply standing by the tent that Kim Dokja was in, hoping he was almost done and accidentally listens to his surprisingly loud voice, “-don’t sell off reality as fiction like you did!” She’s technically heard him from the beginning but hearing his voice this loud was... a humbling experience.

Yoo Sangah startles when Kim Dokja comes out looking bitter and almost bumps into him. He backs away and his expression becomes blank again. “Oh... I’m sorry, Dokja-ssi. It's just that you were taking a bit long.”

Kim Dokja stares at her for a moment before walking down the pavement. “How’s your hangover?”

Yoo Sangah walks next to him, passing other Korean citizens as she smiles at him, “I’m fine, I heard you carried me back here,” Her smile diminishes into a soft frown. “I’m sorry, I’ve been nothing but a nuisance again.”

Kim Dokja’s face was clearer like when he was tipsy. His face was getting blurrier by the moment, though. It brings a frown to Yoo Sangah’s face, but she digresses. Kim Dokja smiles at her, as if he hadn’t just yelled at the King of Wanderers, “It’s fine, Sangah-ssi. You were only trying to look after me.” 'He’s saying the article again.'

Kim Dokja’s smile seems genuine as he asks while looking forward, “Did Sangah-ssi hear it all?”

Yoo Sangah nods quietly, not wanting to speak up now. Hopefully, Kim Dokja can still trust her even if she did listen to a private conversation. Kim Dokja continues to talk to her, his voice quieter but still with a slight tilt. She’s just not sure if it’s an honest tilt or something different. “Sangah-ssi must’ve found it strange that a mother and son would talk to each other like that.” 'Mother and son?'

Yoo Sangah snaps to attention, not wanting Kim Dokja to get the wrong idea, “No, not at all!” Yoo Sangah hadn’t had a large dispute with her parents other than when she was applying for college, and she learned four languages.

Kim Dokja continues, as if she hadn’t spoke at all, “Would you like to know why?”

Yoo Sangah replies quietly, “...if it’s alright with Dokja-ssi.”

Yoo Sangah wonders if he’s truly okay with telling her as Kim Dokja smiles wryly but he replies easily, “My mother killed my father.”

Yoo Sangah looks at him in surprise. His voice carried little emotion as he shared his past, perhaps a little wonder was in his voice as he shared, “She served prison for it, of course,” Yoo Sangah makes little sound as he continues in the same tone, “I know it might sound harsh, but my father was someone who deserved it.”

Kim Dokja lists off his father’s crimes as if he was just telling her it was going to rain later, “Domestic violence, gambling, debt, and more. He beat us; my mother and I, while he was alive.” His voice now carried a bit of self-consideration, as if it wasn’t his life he was describing. Kim Dokja continues, his voice quiet yet carried easily to Yoo Sangah, “One day my mother mustered the courage... she ended up doing something about it.”

It’s live an invisible wall seperates him from us. From me.

Kim Dokja has a light frown as he seems to fast forward his late youth and early twenties, “I thought rumors had already circulated around work already. I suppose Sangah-ssi didn’t hear them,” His voice had a more careful tone as he continues, “Sangah-ssi must be even more confused as to why I would hate my mother when she did what she had done to end both my and her suffering. It puzzles Sangah-ssi, doesn’t it?”

Yoo Sangah 'doesn’t understand,' but that’s alright. If she tries hard enough, she could make sense of anything Kim Dokja does when not having to deal with scenarios. She replies hurriedly, “No, not at all! I may not be able to understand Dokja-ssi fully, but-!”

Yoo Sangah feels her face growing warm and Kim Dokja interrupts with a light hum, his voice carrying no inflections of him talking about something as traumatic as domestic and child abuse. “Sangah-ssi thinks I should forgive her for what she did, right?”

Yoo Sangah feels a flame of anger and anguish at the words being spoken; they were both so true, yet so untrue.

Surprising Yoo Sangah, Kim Dokja changes the subject, “Does Sangah-ssi know a novel called ‘A Murder’s Notes from the Underground’?”

Yoo Sangah lights up from the change in topic, 'A change in topic!' She smiles albeit awkwardly, “I think I’ve heard of it! It was a best seller, wasn’t it?”

However, she is not that lucky. Kim Dokja continues with a light smile and Yoo Sangah forever distrusts any smile Kim Dokja has during morbid topics, “It’s an essay a woman wrote while she was in prison for killing her husband who had abused her. It was critically acclaimed.”

Yoo Sangah’s face turns pale at this, even as he continues, voice flat, as if he had no take other than telling a story to a friend or a child, “The critics called it the ‘Notes from the Underground’. It’s been way over-rated of course.” Yoo Sangah cries internally, 'you’ve read it?! Dokja-ssi, please, don’t read things so morbid!'

Kim Dokja’s smile finally turns wry, dry as he stares at something at the pavement, “Yes, my mother wrote it.”

Yoo Sangah frowns but Kim Dokja’s voice becomes quieter, but still firm enough for her to hear. “I can still remember the reporters swarming around our apartment. Everyone was asking if the novel was true or at least based on a true story.”

Yoo Sangah can feel a faint, depressing aura around Kim Dokja now as he continues, “I even remember everything my classmates said. How my mother had sold her past to make money...” He continues after a moment, as if letting the sentence stick to her, “Even my relatives asked me... how my mother could allow herself to be in the papers like that when she’s a murderer.”

Yoo Sangah blinks, wanting to ask how old he was, but refrains from saying much. Thus, she puts as much genuine emotion she can muster as she says his name with no article, “Dokja...”

Kim Dokja ignores her call as he continues talking, staring at a crack in the sidewalk, “Things were a little difficult after that.” 'No shit,' Yoo Sangah cries internally.

Kim Dokja has a considerable voice, as if he was recalling each and every memory of his past, “No, maybe more so than just a little,” Then, shocking to Yoo Sangah, he continues a bizarre line that could only, truly, belong to Kim Dokja’s lonely heart, “I could stand being the son of murderer.” Then, a considerably less bizarre line. “But having that story being sold off for money is a different story.”

Kim Dokja has a less-than-firm voice as he continues, “To think my life was being exchanged for money by someone else... is a completely different story.” Kim Dokja stops as he looks up at the stars, the Constellations, as he says this.

Yoo Sangah, in that moment, considers his face to be clearest it's been since the scenarios have started as he looks ahead, his eyes only the slightest bit hazy, making his eyes harder to read. He turns to Yoo Sangah, “Do you think I should forgive my mother?” His face had no smile, no significant happiness displayed like he was showing more often, just not now. It had simply been blank, as if his face had been wiped with some kind of emotion repeller.

Yoo Sangah wonders if that’s how Kim Dokja’s expression and feelings were like when the novel had just come out, when his classmates and relatives alike talked about his mother’s sins.

She’s rightfully surprised when Kim Dokja chuckles, a kind of dry humor showing on his face as his eyes close and a wide and too thin smile graces his lips, “I’m sorry. I was joking.”

Yoo Sangah frowns. She, too, knew it wasn’t a lie with how clear his face had been. Speaking of his face... it was blurring quite a bit now. A small mutter of, “What?” slips out of her lips.

Kim Dokja chuckles more, as if it had been a joke. Quite a bad one, if that was the case, “It was a lie, I got you pretty good, huh? How could such a dramatic thing happen in real life? Purely fiction. My mother and I are like normal families,” He walks past her, a small smile on his face. It wasn’t nearly as genuine as it had been when they were drinking, “And my father had been in an accident when I was younger.”

Yoo Sangah can’t stop herself from reaching out to his hand. She holds it carefully, as if Kim Dokja was made of the finest treasure. 'His hands are cold. Does Dokja have poor blood circulation?'

Yoo Sangah and Kim Dokja hold hands, well it more like Yoo Sangah was holding a corpse's hand, much to her mental displeasure and unease. He lets her, his hand loose, as if merely accepting. His hand doesn’t even twitch.

“Dokja-ssi!”

Kim Dokja swipes his hand back as if he had been burned and Yoo Sangah’s eyes widen at the same time her frown becomes more prominent.

「The show has ended... for now.」

Lee Jihye and the now awake children sob as they repeat what was already said. “It was just a joke?!”

“Dokja hyung! This must be a joke, right?”

Kim Dokja, for once, was unsure if he should lie about something trivial. Kim Dokja glances over at the protagonist before telling a half-truth, “That is what I said.”

Han Sooyoung levels a glare at him and Kim Dokja sends a light smile to her. This seems to only elevate her suspicions. Kim Dokja feels a tinge of how his incarnation is feeling and at the moment, he’s feeling burdensome and as if he was told the most heartbreaking thing.

Kim Dokja frowns slightly as his normally firm hands soften to pet his incarnation. Lee Gilyoung watches with an angry expression. He looked at Kim Dokja with an almost puppy-eyed look, and he pets him too, just as he did when Lee Gilyoung and he were in the station.

Kim Dokja huffs out a laugh, realizing something. He looks at Yoo Sangah, “Sangah-ssi cursed in her head? How funny.” To anyone who wasn’t one of his companions, he would’ve sounded mocking. However, he seems to truly view what he said as a joke, so Yoo Sangah smiles back at him, a flush on her cheeks.

Jung Heewon brings her arm around his neck instead of his shoulders like before and he simply looks over at her, giving her his attention. Jung Heewon mumbles to him, “Tell me honestly, what do you think of the castle owner. I know you know who that is, regardless of meeting them.”

Kim Dokja hums, glancing at the screen, “Don’t be fooled by appearances.”

「Time for a ‘Future Event’.」

Kim Dokja blinks at the screen, as do most of his companions. Kim Dokja mumbles, “Future?”

Jung Heewon looks wary as she glances at him. Kim Dokja doesn’t give her attention as he frowns at the screen. “...What future?”

The future.」

「’Future Event (80th Scenario)’ starting.」

“Dokja-ssi,” Yoo Sangah speaks through a moderate sized hole, just big enough for her fist to fit through. She was clouded in darkness, only light enough to read the numerous bookshelves somewhat.

Kim Dokja responds, “Yes?” It sounded clear but muffled at the same time.

“I’m not such a good person,” she says. She knows that Kim Dokja sees her as a good person and that she’s alike to a saint or a ‘heroine’ as he calls her in some of his memories.

Just like she knew what would happen, another book is written on his thoughts and emotions. She reads the new edition quickly, now able to read his thoughts. As she sees his confusion and reflexive thought of ‘how’, she says, “Do you remember the Breakroom Incident?”

Kim Dokja pauses for a moment before responding, a slight hesitation to his words, “...i remember.”

The incident where Yoo Sangah had sprinkled pepper into the finely ground coffee grounds. She had felt liberated at that moment. Yoo Sangah breathes in before saying, “I was the one who did it.”

Kim Dokja purses his lips just slightly before relaxing his expression, “Is that so?”

Yoo Sangah blinks. “...You aren’t surprised.”

Kim Dokja’s lips quirk, just slightly. “Thanks to you, the newcomers didn’t have to do any coffee errands for a while.” He almost sounded amused.

Yoo Sangah speaks of her mistakes, of her idiocy, and of her happiness in those moments as she goes through her life of ‘incidents’.

Despite it all, Kim Dokja smiles gently as she finishes. “Sangah-ssi.”

Yoo Sangah bites her lip, “Yes?”

“Thank you.”

「End of future event.」

Kim Dokja blinks. Yoo Sangah flushes. 'To think I told him everything.'

Jung Heewon hums, “Where was Sangah-ssi during this ‘future event’?”

「...it does not matter.」

Kim Dokja purses his lips. 'Bookshelves...could it be?' Kim Dokja looks over at Yoo Sangah. 'Could she have been eaten?'

「Number of participants who have gone: 1/8.」

Yoo Sangah seems to visibly deflate. “Oh my, I’m finally done.”

Kim Dokja smiles, and Jung Heewon tenses along with Han Sooyoung. “I wonder who’s next?”

「The next incarnation is Lee Gilyoung.」
