Chapter 1: A Friend

Chapter Text

Ever since you were 5, you lived at the Wammy’s house for most of your life. It was a special orphanage for gifted children.

However, despite the institution, you never really considered yourself smart or unique. You scored okay on tests and could solve some problems but honestly, you thought you were pretty average.

But just like most of the other kids, you didn't know who your parents were or where they had gone.

But honestly, you didn't really care about what happened to them. The orphanage was your home now and you loved it. Everyone was kind and welcoming and they became your new family.

Well, not all the kids were nice but a majority of them were. It was a lively and loving community.

But among the orphans, you heard talk about a peculiar boy. From what you heard, his name was Lawliet. He was older than you by 3 years.

There were rumors about Lawliet. Some said he was creepy, some said he was a genius, and others said that Lawliet didn't even exist.

After hearing these from your acquaintances and friends, you learned a pretty important lesson at an early age…

People can be unreliable when trying to figure out the truth.

So you decided to do some investigating on your own.

One of the things you noticed was that Lawliet was always alone.

He played by himself, ate by himself, even slept by himself.

None of the other kids seemed to really like him. Or they acted like he was invisible. But you always saw him.

You could tell he was pretty special. After all, he was really smart. He was always solving puzzles and got the highest grades in class.

You grew curious about him. Who was he? What kind of person was he? What were his favorite things?

And so you decided to approach him one sunny day.

After lunch, it was free time (or recess) so you decided to go look for Lawliet. He wasn't in the yard playing with the other kids so you wandered around the building before you eventually discovered him sitting alone in the dirt.

Tilting your head, you approach him with his back facing toward you. He was drawing in the sand with a stick.

“Whatcha drawin’?” You chirp with your hands held behind you.

Lawliet is startled and whips his head back with wide eyes. You've never really gotten a good look at him up close before.

His black messy hair was all over the place and his big black eyes looked innocent and pure.

You smile warmly until he stammers and hurriedly turns around to run off.

Your eyes grow big before you grab his leg. “Wait hold on!”

He falls with a thud before laying face down as you giggle and come up beside him. “Don't run away, I just want to talk.”

Lawliet lays there for a moment before turning his head to look up at you with a slight frown. “...why do you want to talk to me? Don't you hear what the other kids say? I'm…weird…”

He looks away as you stand there before pouting. Bending down, you smile at him. “hm..well that's pretty dumb. We’re all weird cause otherwise we wouldn't be at this place, right?”

Lawliet looks at you in surprise. Were you really only 5 years old?

You giggle at his expression before introducing yourself while holding out your hand. “I'm y/n. Nice to meet you.”

Lawliet slowly sits up before grabbing your small hand. “..I'm Lawliet.”

“I know,” you grin before helping him up, struggling a little as you do so. “You're pretty popular. I heard about you from the others.”

Lawliet immediately looks down at that. “Oh…yeah.”

Your smile fades and you start to regret saying that before you notice his drawings in the sand. “oh um, were you playing tic-tac-toe?”

“y-yeah,” Lawliet nods shyly while fiddling with his hands. He felt a little embarrassed since he was just playing by himself.

But you only pick up a stick and smile. “I'll play with you!”

“Huh?” he looks at you in shock. “y-you will?”

You nod and bend down. “Mhm!”

Lawliet stares at you for a moment before blushing and picking up his stick. “Okay..um, which one do you want to be?”

“x!” You giggle happily as Lawliet bends down beside you. A small smile tugs on his lips at your cheerfulness.

Strange…the world seems to have gotten a little brighter for some reason.

Ever since then, you followed Lawliet everywhere.

It's lunch time and Lawliet is sitting alone at a table until a plate is suddenly placed down beside him.

He jumps and looks up to see your warm smile. “Hi!”

“H..hi,” he mumbles while watching you sit down.

You pick up your utensil and immediately start to dig in as Lawliet watches. You eventually notice he's not eating and point it out.

“What’s wrong? Are you not hungry?” you ask with a mouthful of food.

Lawliet blushes, thinking that you look similar to a hamster, before looking down at his meal.

“Um..I just..”

Your eyes drift down to his plate and you spot that he ate the pudding but left everything else untouched.

You tilt your head before smiling. “Ohh I get it. So you only like sweets huh?”

You place your pudding on his plate, catching him by surprise. “huh? w-what are you-”

“You can have mine then!” You say with a giggle before resuming eating.

Lawliet stares at you in awe before poking his fork into the dessert and taking a bite. His cheeks turn a rosy hue from the sugar.

You watch his reaction from the corner of your eye and smile to yourself. It was cute.

Once it was time for bed, Lawliet climbed into his bed that was pushed into the corner away from the others.

Some boys did it but Lawliet didn't really care. He much preferred the peace and quiet anyway.

Once he's comfortable, he closes his eyes and sighs. A few minutes pass by until something lifts his blanket and crawls in.

Eyes flying open, he looks over in surprise to see you and immediately jumps back with a scream. “A-ahh!”

“Shh!” you hold a finger over your lips before smiling and snuggling under the blanket. “You'll wake the others.”

Lawliet stammers with a red face. “Y-y/n you shouldn't be here! You'll get in trouble…”

“It's okay if nobody finds out right?” You counter while lying on your side. “I just didn't want you to be alone.”

Lawliet is taken aback by that before relaxing slightly. He looks away while sitting up as the moonlight from the window illuminates him.

“Hey..can I ask you something?” He quietly asks after a while.

“Hm? Okay,” you agree.

“...why did you approach me? And why are you so nice to me?” The question has been on his mind for a while now. He just didn't get it.

Your eyes grow big before you sit up as well. “Why?”

Lawliet doesn't respond so you purse your lips and look down at your lap.

“Well…because I found you interesting.”

He looks back at you as you continue. “And..also cause I wanted to find out who you were for myself. Cause I didn't believe what the other kids said.” You explain honestly.

Lawliet’s lips part in shock until you lean over and gently grab his hand. “And I like you, Lawliet. You're nothing like what the others say. You're kind and brilliant and just a shy, sometimes awkward guy,” You giggle.

Lawliet’s cheeks flush an adorable pink before he averts his gaze nervously.

Your words were so genuine and heartfelt that he couldn't help but tear up a bit.

“Do you..do you mean that..?” he finally whispers while meeting your eyes.

You nod eagerly. “Mhm!”

Lawliet smiles happily before gently hugging you. “Thank you..”

He had finally made a friend. One he would cherish forever.
