“It reminded me of you.” A smile played over Deeks’ lips as he held out the necklace, showing Maya what he had gotten for her. The necklace was a simple silver chain, with a couple of charms on it, a running shoe, and a small rectangle with her favorite distance engraved on it. “And don’t you dare say something about it being too much and that you don’t need it.” He dropped the necklace in her hand, “you deserve it, you were awesome today, like all of your races, but today was different.” He smiled at her, as he closed her hand around the small piece of jewelry.
Deeks rolled on his feet, hands stuffed in his pockets, smiling at her, “and we both know that you wouldn’t have gotten anything from anyone else, at least not something like that.”
“Deeks,” Maya said, shaking her head, “we both know who you are talking about and he’s my coach when it comes to running and a coach doesn’t give you things after a race.”
“he’s also your dad,” he replied, “but that part isn’t exactly something he thinks about or acts like, so we can call him an asshole.” Deeks shrugged his shoulders, “and I know something about dad’s that are assholes, so if I say he is, then he is.” A small a laugh left his lips, “and also it’s not just from me if you think it’s too awkward for your best friend to give you something,” he said, “it’s from mama Deeks too. So let me help you put it on.”
He took the necklace from Maya, and took a step behind her, pulling the necklace around her neck, letting the charms fall around her neck, “and wear this during your races, it’s like a lucky charm, and me being with you even when I can’t actually physically be there with you. Okay?”
