Work Text:
A late night spent sitting on a rooftop was nothing new to him. The boy sat on the edge of the roof, legs dangling over the edge. Looking over the rooftops. The lights of the city. The distant noise of the people far down below. It all blurred together with the passing time. A lonely boy in his bubble.
“Fly”, they said. “How high?” he asked. Everything decided for them. Every breath. Every move. Every decision. "Train hard”, they said. “You will accomplish great things one day.” “You will be a hero, a winner. A prodigy, a powerful man.” The man was just a boy. A lonely boy in a room too big.
Two boys forced to grow up too soon, to take on the weight of the world. Two lonely boys in a big world. A world that wanted neither of them.
Well, they didn’t want the world either.

"Dude u know ur going to get caught if you do something that reckless again, right?"
"I’m not gonna let you be alone ever again!”
"Aww so you do care about me, Kuro!”
“You can't promise that dummy. The world doesn’t work that way.”
"Kid, I’m being serious. One more of those stunts and you’re never seeing the light of day again, and that’s if they don’t kill you first.”
“I don’t fucking care, I’ll make it work that way!”
“Don’t ya worry about me, I can take care of myself.”
“I sure hope you do, Kaden.”
--
“This is an important mission, nr.13, so no mistakes. Do you understand?”
“We loners gotta stay together, a’ight? That’s the only way we can survive. So. Together?”
“Yes, Sir. No mistakes.”
“Forever. Pinky promise?”
“Good. Your duty is to kill the woman named Yonaka Tsuki, alias Saigai.”
“U know it boy!”
“Yes Sir.”
“Leave now. You will find the details in the files Lieutenant Garoff gave you. I expect perfect work, Raijin.”

A dark-haired teen was running through the backstreets of the city, turning corners and jumping over walls like they were born for that. He in fact was not born for that, but they did grow up on the very same streets.
The boy gave a triumphant grin, just to turn a corner only to face a brick wall. It was a dead end. As the boy turned around another teen rounded the corner and crashed into the dark haired one. They both toppled over, and the newcomer crashed on top the dark-haired teen.
“Well look at that”, said the dark-haired teen with a sly grin, “looks like you fell for me-”
Before he finished the sentence the other teen with white hair slapped him lightly on the arm. He rolled over to sit next to him and glared at the other.
“Don’t flirt with me, Kaden. I’m still mad at you for stealing my doughnut.”
“Aww, is the birdy mad I stole its worm? You're so cute, Rai”, the dark haired, Kaden, laughed. “I’m a literal criminal, what else do you expect me to do?”
“Well not to steal my doughnuts when you have ur own!?” the white haired –Rai- said, exasperatedly waving their arms around. Kaden grinned and sat up next to Rai, giving him a sly grin.
“Well, how can I make it up to you?
Rai didn’t answer. Instead, he quickly got up and hid his face from Kaden.
The dark headed teen laughed and stood up.
“Well birdy, we better get going if I want to be on time for the deal with Scope. I’m assuming you don’t want to come?”
Rais expression darkened in to a scowl.
“Yea. Let’s go.”
He turned around and started walking. Kaden quickly walked after him. They fell into step with each other and walked in silence for a bit. Rai got more anxious by every step, and a bit finally spoke up.
“I’m sorry.”
“It’s a’ight Birdy. Not ur fault.”
Kaden gently took hold of Rais hand and smiled at the other. Rai gave a hesitant smile back and squeezed their joined hands.
“Hey, let’s go on the rooftops!” Kaden suddenly exclaimed and began to drag Rai towards the nearest fire escape. Rai rolled their eyes but followed the teen to the roof.
