Snow, Starlight, and Silver Dreams

Summary:

A collection of one-shots exploring Ash and Serena's relationship.

Notes:

Heyo, welcome to my late night writing drabbles that I shall call, “Vignettes.” LOL. In all seriousness, I discovered a list of prompts that I had copied and pasted into a note on my phone, and decided that it might be fun to write and post a few every now and then. I’m pretty sure they are collection I have accumulated from Tumblr, but I don’t think they’re linked to one specific post. I’ve been looking through my saved posts just to make sure, but haven’t really found anything. I’ll keep you posted though.

Anyway, I thought it might be good to just practice writing little things to maybe even reuse to some degree in other stories or to just keep the creative juices flowing. The little vignettes that you will read here take me anywhere from 20-30 minutes to write, which is much much different than a chapter from Paldea rn. Also, I’m not taking these as seriously. Even in “Life With You,” I feel like I’m digging really deep to make sure each one-shot is moving or profound to some degree. Here, I’m just having fun.

You’ll notice that sometimes the language changes between vignettes. That’s just me experimenting. Sometimes I like to get poetic and it doesn’t fit other stories. Other times, I want to indulge in flowery, cheesy fluff. So you’ll see that too. They're not super polished, so sorry about that. Again, quick writes.

Most of these vignettes are totally unrelated and some might not even match up canon. Some might even take place in an AU, so again, it’s all experimental and just a little look into my writing diary. Anyway, enjoy. 💕

Vignette #1 // You’re Freezing, Come Here

The snow was deep on the ground. Always the light fell softly down on this trail. Anemic sunlight. It flitted and disappeared into a shock of black hair belonging to a young man who walked slowly through the woods. The cold earth slept below his boots, sometimes rising in the wind in thick downy flakes against his cheeks, biting at the cold flush that spread across his tanned face.

The snow was beautiful on the ground. The young man trudged along the snow-covered path, his breath visible in the fading light. He glanced up at the trees lining the route, their boughs bending with snow, dark fingers slowly leaning into a bear hug of whiteness.

It was strange being back here, but with more light. More perspective. The weather, with its heavy gray canopy had once felt oppressive. He had felt stuck. Like all his dreams had been so far away. So at a distance. Like he would never reach them.

For the first time in his life, he had felt like giving up, letting the black wintry hedge swallow him.

“Ash.”

The young woman. Always the light fell softly down on her honey-gold hair. Her face held the morning’s light as she looked up and slipped her gloved hand into Ash’s, the warmth of love cutting through the chill.

“I thought I lost you back there.” She blinked through the wind, and snow fell off her lashes like little falling stars.

Ash’s lips quirked upwards. “Not this time, Serena.”

Her vivid blue eyes glowed in the glare of the snow as she studied him. “Good.”

They walked together, hand in hand, their footprints dissolving into the fresh snow behind them. The world around was quiet, save for the soft crunch of their boots and the occasional whistle of the wind that sent a flurry of flakes spiraling between the trees. Serena shivered as the frost crept through her coat, the wind biting at her collar and stinging her cheeks with its icy breath.

“I’m glad we left the Pokémon at the Center.”

Ash nodded, his warm eyes frozen to her lovely face. He gripped her more tightly.

It was really too cold. The route around Snowbelle City always was.

But the snow was beautiful on the ground.

At last, they reached the clearing. The trees opened into a wide, snow-covered expanse, the ground laid out like a pristine, undisturbed canvas. The snow stretched flat and unbroken, shimmering under the pale sunlight like crushed diamonds scattered over velvet—a soft blend of grays and silvers with a faint blush of pink as the dawn began to vanish. The clearing felt untouched.

The wind stilled. In the quiet, the air felt almost reverent, wrapping them in a fragile, crystalline silence.

“I can’t believe we’re back here.” Serena adjusted her pink scarf, staring out at the amazed iced.

"Yeah, me neither." Ash paused, feeling a fresh trickle of snow falling upon the clearing. "I wasn’t exactly myself last time.”

Serena’s eyes flickered with a gentle knowing. "You were going through a lot."

They looked at each other. The memory between them glowing golden against the gray winterscape, like a moon. Years melted off their faces, and the shadow of youth returned, if only for the barest of breaths. And love glowed off Serena’s face, even while Ash grew withdrawn and pensive again.

She shifted, her boots crunching in the snow. Her lips advanced towards his, preparing to appease, to call him back to the moment with the sustenance of a kiss. When her cold mouth covered his, Ash returned to her in vivid force. Only she had that effect on him. He was glad she didn’t hurry the tender act; in some ways, he had lived for waiting for her.

When she came away, her mouth red from the sudden warmth, Ash grinned. His arms slid around her waist, pressing her close against him.

“You always know how to wake me up.”

A smile blossomed across Serena’s face; the only flower growing in the frost. “Were you sleeping?”

Ash gazed down at her, her blue eyes still intensely brightened by the cold. Flakes of snow were stuck to her face and her hair. The last few years, he had been looking for her everywhere. Looking for her kindness, looking for her encouragement. It had just taken him a while to realize…

Serena let out a long sigh, her breath coming out like smoke. She looked around coyly, her hand slipping out of Ash’s as she began to walk forward in the growing wind. Her hands came together behind her back.

“You know,” her voice took on a singsong lilt, “I couldn’t just give you kisses before. What did I do to wake you up back then? I don’t even remember now….”

Ash raised an eyebrow. She was up to something. She always bit her lip whenever she had an idea forming in her mind. “Really…?” He folded his arms across his chest.

A noise cracked to his right. Ash whirled at the sound and saw a branch laden with snow fall to the ground off the nearby treeline.

Next, he felt something cold and hard break apart against the back of his face.

“That was predictable.”

Ash turned and saw everything that was best of dark and bright meet in the blue of Serena’s eyes.

Her smile grew impish. “Then why didn’t you see it coming, Pokémon Master?”

Another snowball, formed in the palm of her gloves, suddenly took to the air while her face gleamed with childish excitement.

Ash ducked low and felt the snow soar over his head. He stared at her, his grin slowly moving from his lips to the corner of his eyes.

"Oh, you’re asking for it now!"

Serena’s laugh made the world sing. She darted away, her boots leaving deep tracks in the snow. Ash quickly gathered his own handful of white powder, tossing it after her, his aim deliberately poor. The snowball exploded harmlessly against a tree beside her, and Serena whirled around, her smile as beautiful as the frost.

"Is that the best you’ve got, Ash Ketchum?"

Ash’s heart swelled at the sound of her laughter. He charged, feinting another throw before dropping the snowball and catching her by the waist instead. Serena yelped in surprise as Ash spun her around, both of them laughing, breathless as the world spun around them.

They fell into the deep, beautiful snow.

On the ground, Serena lay atop him. Her cheeks flushed from the cold and the happiness deeply rooted within her chest. “It wasn’t just about your battle and Wulfric.” She rested her hands on him, her sapphire eyes shining. “That’s not the only reason I wanted to wake you up.”

Ash blinked, lost in a hushed, ice-clear trance. "I know."

Serena leaned closer, her voice dropping to barely the sound of the falling snow. "I wanted you to see." Her glove moved to his cheek. “To really see.”

The weight of her words settled between them. Ash didn’t shy away. With his teeth, he ripped off one of his gloves and moved his hand over her face, brushing a few stray snowflakes from her hair, his thumb lingering on her cheek. "I know, Serena. I see everything now."

Her eyes grew luminous with something tender. Ash’s heart raced, but this time, it wasn’t the pressure of a battle or the weight of expectations. It was simply being here, with her, knowing they had come through everything—stronger, together. Seeing her. Only her.

Ash leaned upwards, the hand against her skin drew her down. The distance closed between them. Their lips met in a kiss soft as fresh snow. The world around them grew still, the cold vanished into misty smoke. His arm slid around her waist, drawing her as close as he could given their heavy coats. Their mouths danced and sighed against the other, leaving sweet and warm impressions.

When they finally pulled apart, Ash kept a strong hold on her. “You’re freezing.” He could taste the flakes on her lips and feel a shiver rack her body. “Come here.”

Serena was about to protest until Ash kissed her again. This time deeper. She exhaled painfully slow, her mouth growing warm on his and she shivered again, but not from the cold. She didn’t think she’d ever get used to this, to this kind of togetherness. To Ash finally seeing her.

Breathless, they came away. Serena rested her forehead against his, smiling. "Why don’t we go back to the Center to warm up."

Ash, still beneath her, moved his lips across her cold jaw—“I’m pretty warm right now”—and then down her neck—“what about you?”

Serena pushed him back down into the snow, eyeing him with a wicked glint. “I’d be warmer if we did this on a couch. Cuddling.”

His brows shot up.

“Good idea.”

Ash quickly shifted beneath her, his muscles tensing as he helped her up with almost too much enthusiasm. Serena let out a surprised yelp, teetering forward and tumbling back into his arms. Her laughter bubbled up again, light and musical. Before he could apologize, she planted a quick kiss on his nose, her lips barely grazing the cold tip before pulling back with a grin that lit up her flushed face.

The snow was beautiful on the ground. Hand in hand, they began their walk back to the Pokémon Center. Every so often, Ash would glance over at her, unable to stop the grin that crept across his face. Serena smiled back, her heart full. They were together—hand in hand, and finally seeing each other.

Vignette #2 // You’re Cute When…

Ash sat on the edge of the small wooden bench, watching the sun dip low behind the trees. The gentle hum of the landscape surrounded them, quiet but alive. Serena sat beside him, legs tucked beneath her, watching the light dance on the forest canopy and spill onto the rural hills. The silence between them felt easy, comfortable.

Eventually, Ash glanced at her, taking in the soft way the sunset cast a glow across her face, the way her hair fell loosely over her shoulders. She always looked so serene when she was like this—lost in her own thoughts, at peace with the world.

Watching her, Ash felt words spill out of his mouth. "You’re cute when you’re thinking."

Serena turned, eyebrows raised in surprise. A soft pink bloom rose to her cheeks while her lips twitched into a small smile. "Oh? You think?" She tried to play along, but Ash could hear something wondering in her voice.

Ash shrugged, feeling his ears burn. He wasn’t used to talking about things like this—feelings, moments that made his heart race. But with Serena, it was different. She made it easy somehow. Or at least possible.

"Yeah," he continued, his voice a little quieter now, like he was testing the words on his tongue. "When you get all quiet and your face scrunches up a bit, like you’re trying to figure out the whole world in one go."

Serena’s smile widened, and she shifted closer, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I didn’t realize I made such funny faces when I think."

Ash stammered, shaking his head. "Not funny, just… I don’t know. Cute."

Serena nudged him lightly with her elbow. "You know, you’re cute when you get all flustered like this." Her eyes sparkled, bright and blue. Ash could feel his chest tighten.

"I’m not flustered!" He protested, though the heat rising up his neck said otherwise. He shifted awkwardly, rubbing the back of his head. "I’m just saying what I see."

Serena laughed softly, and the sound warmed him from the inside out. She leaned into his side, resting her head on his shoulder. "Well, I see a guy who’s a lot sweeter than he gives himself credit for."

Ash swallowed, his heart pounding a little faster now that she was so close. Her words, simple as they were, wrapped around him like a blanket. He felt her breath against his shoulder as she whispered, "You’re cute when you try to compliment me, you know? Like it’s the hardest thing in the world to just say how you feel."

Ash blinked, staring at the last sliver of the sun dipping below the horizon. His muscles tensing when he felt her sigh against him.

He let out a shaky breath, turning to look down at her. "I’m trying," he said, his voice quiet but steady. "Because you deserve to hear it, Serena."

Serena gazed up at him and pulled back. Her eyes softened as she tilted her head, her fingers reaching up to brush against his cheek. "I know. And you’re doing great, Ash."

Everything she said was so warm, and it settled something in him. Ash let his hand rest over hers, holding it gently against his cheek.

"You’re cute when you say things like that," he murmured, the corners of his lips lifting into a small, genuine smile.

Serena's breath was soft and she leaned in, her lips brushing his. She whispered against his mouth.

"I guess we’re both pretty cute, then."

Ash smiled into the kiss, pulling away to lean his forehead against hers. "Yeah, I guess we are."

Vignette #3 // Don’t Let Me Go

The ocean stretched out before them, glittering under the bright light of a high noon sun. Waves lapped gently against the boat, the water cool and inviting. Ash stood at the edge of the diving board that jutted out the starboard side, his eyes on the horizon, a grin tugging at his lips.

Serena stood a few feet back from the board, arms crossed tightly over her chest. She glanced nervously at the water, where Pikachu and Pancham splashed playfully, their joyful cries mingling with the sounds of the sea. Ash’s Rowlet was fluttering about the waves, seeming anxious to find a place to float. Even Sylveon, normally cautious about such things, had leaped in with little hesitation, ribbons waving as she paddled with surprising elegance.

Ash turned toward the honey-blonde, catching the way she shifted from foot to foot. His grin softened as he took her in—her hair tied back loosely, a few strands escaping and catching the sunlight, her cheeks flushed from the summer heat.

He took a step closer to her, his eyes gentle but teasing. "What’s wrong? You’re not scared, are you?"

Serena shot him a look, her lips twitching into a pout. "It’s just… the water looks cold. And deep."

"It’s not that bad, I promise."

She bit her lip, glancing between Ash and the rolling waves. She hesitated, her arms wrapping tighter around herself. "I’ve never been in water this deep before!"

Ash smiled softly, coming off the boat’s diving board and stepping beside her. He let his hand brush against hers, not grabbing it yet, just a light touch, reassuring. "You’ll like it,” he said, leaning down to kiss her cheek, “And even if you don’t, we can just come back on the boat. Either way, I’ll be right here and won’t let anything happen to you!"

Serena looked up at him, her eyes searching his, and for a moment the world narrowed to just the two of them. Ash watched as her nervousness slowly ebbed, replaced with a flicker of trust, of something deeper. He had seen that look before, back when she had stood by him through so many challenges, when she had believed in him even when he wasn’t sure of himself.

"Okay," she whispered, nodding slightly. Slowly her hands came away from her body, one sliding into his. "Just don’t let me go."

Ash’s heart did a small flip at her words. There was something about the way she said it—so soft, so certain—that made his chest tighten in the best way. He let his fingers slip through hers, holding her hand firmly now, his thumb brushing against her skin.

"I won’t," he said, his voice quiet but full of the confidence he knew she needed right now.

Serena took a deep breath, glancing once more at the ocean before meeting his gaze again. Ash couldn’t help but admire her in that moment—the way she always stepped out of her comfort zone with confidence, even when she was afraid. Her posture was still a little tense, but her trust in him was clear as day.

"I like your swimsuit," Ash blurted out, hoping that might make her feel better.

Serena’s eyes widened, and then she let out a soft, disbelieving laugh. "Ash!"

He shrugged, grinning at her. "What? It’s true." He looked her up and down as if to prove it.

Her cheeks flushed a deep shade of pink, but she didn’t pull away. Instead, she gave his hand a small squeeze, her smile returning, though still tinged with a bit of hesitation. "You’re impossible."

"And you’re brave," he countered, stepping closer to the water, pulling her gently with him. "Come on, let’s do this together."

Serena’s grip tightened on his hand as they approached the diving board. When a large wave crashed against the boat and sprayed the couple, Serena let out a small squeal, jumping slightly, which made Ash laugh.

"It’s not that cold," he teased, pulling her forward.

"It’s freezing!" she protested, though there was a spark of laughter in her voice now.

Ash kept walking, guiding her step by step. He felt her hesitate again, her fingers gripping his hand like a lifeline, but she didn’t pull back.

"You’re doing great," he said softly, looking at her. "Just a little further, and then we can jump in together."

Serena shot him a glare that was both playful and wary. "Jump in?"

"Yup," he said with a grin. "On the count of three. But remember, I’ve got you."

She took a deep breath, her eyes flicking toward the deeper water below. "Okay. Just…”

Ash turned to face her, his free hand gently brushing a damp strand of hair away from her face. "I won’t," he said again. "I won’t let you go, Serena."

Her gaze melted at that, and for a moment, she seemed to forget the cold water and the unsteady rock of the boat entirely. She smiled at him, her nervousness trickling into something warmer, something braver.

"Alright," she said, her voice rock solid now. "Let’s do this."

"One," Ash began, his heart pounding a little faster now, though not from the water.

"Two," Serena echoed, her eyes locked on his.

"Three!"

They both ran up to the board’s edge together—leaping forward, plunging into the water, the cold hitting them all at once. Serena gasped, but before she could panic, Ash’s arm was around her waist, pulling her up, steadying her. She surfaced, spluttering and laughing, her hands latching onto his shoulders, but her eyes were bright, her fear replaced by exhilaration.

Ash couldn’t help but laugh with her, his own heart soaring as they bobbed in the water together. "See? Told you it wasn’t so bad!"

Pikachu and Pacham splashed up beside them. They paddled with swift little kicks, sending droplets spraying in every direction.

Serena shook her head at them then looked back at Ash, her laughter bubbling over. "You were right,” she grinned, wrapping her legs around his waist, planting a salty, wet kiss onto his lips. And then her mouth went to his ear, “But I’m glad you didn’t let go."

Ash pulled her a little closer, the water swirling around them. "I never will."

Notes:

Okay! That’s it for now. Hope you enjoyed! As with everything else, not sure how much I plan to update this. It’s mostly just a place to write when I’m stuck elsewhere.

Here are a few other prompts from the list. If you want to see me explore one on the list or from a different list, just let me know! They don’t have to be dialogue prompts either, that’s just what I have rn.

“Is this for me?”
“Five more minutes...and five more minutes…”
“Where did you go?”
“You’re supposed to be with me.”
