Work Text:
“Well, I’ve told I was planning for us to go out!” Asami said, glaring at her wife.
“You have?” Korra blinked.
“That’s your problem! You never listen to me!” Asami muttered. “Sometimes I wonder why do I even bother!”
“Die bi-“ the Triad thug shouted, jumping from behind a tree and sending ice shards at Asami.
Korra acted immediately, getting between the goon and her wife, deflecting the projectiles, but before she managed to strike back, Asami was next to him, dropping him with a well-placed blow to his throat.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t listening to your idea but I was just so excited to show you my…” Korra began but then two more Triad goons jumped out of the bushes. As they were summoning flames she quickly – and perhaps a bit too hard – airbent them against a nearest tree.
“So we have to go with your idea and ignore mine?” Asami said, definitely not sounding pleased.
“It’s not that,” Korra groaned scratching the back of her neck. “I just really wanted to waterbend you across Yue Bay tonight! Tonight the luminescent flying fish should be jumping out…”
“Long live Aaamoooon!” three chi-blockers – seriously that was so… well, not even last season – jumped down from the branchest of another tree.
Asami immediately blocked the first one’s blow, bending his hand in the elbow so that he shocked himself with his own shock glove. Korra immediately grabbed two more in a whirlwind and crashed them together and Asami was right next to them, dropping them with fast strikes of her elbows.
“It’s just that we can go to the restaurant on any day and the fish jump only one night per year! I actually had to use my waterbending every full moon to change the tides a bit so that this year this day falls on our anniversary!” Korra said.
“No, we can’t go on any day,” Asami groaned “because tomorrow I’m going for a two-week trip to Ba Sing Se. You know how difficult it was for me to arrange things so that I could spend even today with you! Or have you forgotten about that as well?”
“No, I haven’t forgotten about it!” Korra assured her. “It’s just…”
“What, I should put all my plans on hold for you while you keep going on your crazy Avatar adventures and saving the world?”
“No, of course not…”
“For the Dai Li!” two figures shouted, jumping from yet another bush and earthbending stone fists at Korra…
Fists that she immediately turned into dust and then watched Asami kick the asses of their attacker. But enough was enough.
Power poured into her as she levitated into the air, summoning elements to surround her.
“DOES ANYONE ELSE WANT TO ATTACK US?!” she shouted with a voice resembling thunder. “WE’RE TRYING TO HAVE AN ARGUMENT HERE, THANK YOU VERY MUCH!”
The only response was the sounds of dozens of figures running away. She landed on the ground and exited the Avatar State.
“Sorry for that, Sami,” she said. “Some people are just so inconsiderate.”
Asami smiled softly.
“Well, to be fair getting attacked on our anniversary is a tradition right now,” she said. “Much more than us arguing, to be honest.”
“Yeah,” Korra scratched the back of her neck, looking down. “I’m sorry for that. I don’t want to be arguing with you. Perhaps I really wasn’t listening enough to you but it’s always you who plan all those lovely things for us and for once I wanted to make something for you and I got so excited that I got tunnel vision and…”
Asami kissed her.
“Don’t apologize,” she said. “We’ll go and watch the fish.”
“No, really, if you already have the seats in the restaurant booked…”
Asami put her finger on Korra’s lips.
“You’re right,” she said. “The fish are only once per year and we can go to the restaurant when I’m back from Ba Sing Se.”
“Thanks, Sami,” Korra smiled. “You’re awesome.”
“You’re awesome, Korra,” Asami said. “And speaking of you being awesome, nice controlling of the Avatar State despite you being angry. It couldn’t have been easy.”
Korra smiled.
“Actually..?”
“Yes?”
“It was easy, very easy. I wasn’t really angry at you, not really,” she said. “Maybe a bit hurt, maybe a bit frustrated but I don’t think I could be angry at you. And just the thought that I might turn the Avatar State against you, was enough for me to immediately dismiss it. I’d never hurt you. You know that, right?”
“Of course I do,” Asami said. “I love you, Korra, and I trust you completely. As for me saying how you go on travelling on ‘Avatar adventures’, I really am not angry about it, but I wish I had more time to be going with you every time, just how we used to. It’s just there is so much work lately and…”
This time it was Korra who silenced her wife with a kiss.
“I get it, Sami,” she said. “I’d also prefer to have you next to me, but I know how important what you’re doing is. I guess we both try to make the world a better place, the best ways we know how.”
“But we need to do it together more often,” Asami smiled. “That’s when we do our best work together.”
They kissed again.
“Sorry, for ruining the anniversary,” they both said as one when they broke off the kiss and then also in unison laughed.
“You didn’t ruin it,” Korra said. “I don’t think you could if you tried.”
“Even if you caught me in bed with Opal?” Korra asked.
“You ass!” Asami chuckled. “But thank you, Korr. You know… I don’t want to say our anniversary is a day like any other… but perhaps we shouldn’t hold it to some unreasonable expectations. We will sometimes argue on this day, sometimes we even might spend it away from each other. But we shouldn’t put too much pressure on it, because…”
“Because there’s plenty of more anniversaries for us,” Korra said. “I really want to spend the rest of my life with you, after all.”
“Same here,” Asami said, then chuckled again. “Which, I believe, I mentioned in my wedding vows.”
“Here’s to many more anniversaries,” Korra said.
And they kissed again.
Someone cleared their throat.
“What?!” Korra snapped, summoning fire in her hands. “Long live who this time? Unalaq, Guan, Zaheer or who?”
“Yeah, what’s your problem?” Asami said adopting a fighting stance. “Do you creeps have our anniversary written in your schedule as ‘attack them there’ date?”
What they saw was an older woman, now completely pale.
“Ummm… I just… wanted to ask… the time…” she stuttered, turned around and limped away.
“Well, that was embarrassing,” Korra muttered.
“Let’s go watch the fish,” Asami suggested.
But first, they kissed again.
