“The Commander’s Promise”
The fire crackled softly in Lexa’s chambers, casting flickering shadows against the stone walls. The night air carried the distant hum of Polis, but in this moment, it felt like the whole world had quieted.
Clarke lay on her side, facing Lexa, her fingers lazily tracing patterns against the Commander’s arm. “You never told me if you had bedtime stories as a kid,” she murmured.
Lexa’s lips quirked in the smallest smile. “Bedtime stories?”
Clarke nodded, propping herself up on her elbow. “You know, something to make you feel safe before you fell asleep.”
Lexa exhaled, thoughtful. “I don’t think I ever felt safe enough for bedtime stories.” There was no sadness in her voice, just honesty. But then, after a pause, she added, “There was one thing… my mother used to tell me that the stars held the spirits of the greatest warriors. That if I was strong enough, I would join them one day.”
Clarke frowned slightly, her hand tightening around Lexa’s. “Sounds more like pressure than comfort.”
Lexa turned her head on the pillow, meeting Clarke’s gaze. “It was both,” she admitted. “But now… I think I would rather stay here.”
Clarke’s heart ached at the quiet confession. She shifted closer, resting her forehead against Lexa’s. “You will,” she whispered. “You don’t have to be strong all the time. Just… stay.”
Lexa closed her eyes briefly, allowing herself to believe those words. “Then tell me a story, Clarke kom Skaikru.”
Clarke smiled. “Alright.” She took a breath, her voice soft. “Once upon a time, there was a fearless commander, burdened with the weight of her people. She thought she had to carry it alone. But then, one day, a stubborn, reckless girl fell from the sky.”
Lexa chuckled, her fingers ghosting over Clarke’s side. “Reckless indeed.”
Clarke continued, her voice dropping to a whisper. “And together, they learned that strength wasn’t just about sacrifice… it was also about love.”
Lexa let out a slow breath, pressing a gentle kiss to Clarke’s forehead. “That is a good story.”
Clarke smiled against her skin. “It’s not over yet.”
Lexa’s arms tightened around her, and for once, she allowed herself to believe that.
As the fire crackled and the stars continued their silent watch, the Commander of the Grounders drifted to sleep—wrapped in warmth, in safety, and in the quiet promise that, for tonight at least, she was not alone.
