Chapter Text
Mu Qing was always precise, sharp, and efficient—the ideal bodyguard. He didn’t speak unless necessary, didn’t show emotion unless required, and certainly didn’t let personal feelings interfere with his job. And yet, the moment Feng Xin entered the car, his tie undone and his expression stormy, Mu Qing knew he was about to hear something reckless
“Drive,” Feng Xin ordered, tossing his phone into the cup holder. The screen lit up with missed calls, an entire line of unread messages from the board of directors.
Mu Qing sighed but started the car. “Where to?”
“Anywhere but here.”
For someone who ran one of the most powerful business empires in the city, Feng Xin had a terrible habit of running away from his problems. It wasn’t that he was weak—far from it. His presence alone could silence a room, and his fists had done more damage than most knew. But when it came to facing the vulture-like businessmen clawing at his company, he had a tendency to avoid confrontation in the worst ways.
“Do you think I’m cut out for this?” Feng Xin asked, his voice lower now, quieter.
Mu Qing kept his eyes on the road. “It doesn’t matter what I think.”
A scoff. “That’s a ‘no,’ then.”
Mu Qing exhaled, gripping the wheel a little tighter. “You’re still running the company, aren’t you?”
Feng Xin chuckled, leaning his head back against the seat. “Barely.”
The weight in his voice made something in Mu Qing’s chest tighten. He glanced at him for a brief moment, then looked away. “You’ve never lost before.”
“First time for everything.”
The city lights blurred past as they drove in silence. The roads stretched endlessly ahead, an escape that neither of them would acknowledge but both desperately needed. Mu Qing didn’t tell him to turn around. Didn’t tell him to face his problems. Instead, he simply kept driving.
Because if Feng Xin needed to run, then Mu Qing would make sure no one could follow.
