Work Text:

The salt spray kissed Warren's face as he surveyed his ship, 'The Red Winter'. A revered pirate, known as Ren to his crew, he was a figure of both fear and admiration. His blood red and gold coat billowed in the wind, a stark contrast to the deep blue of the ocean. Long, brunette hair was pulled back, revealing dark glasses that always hid his eyes, rumored to be as turbulent and mysterious as the ocean itself.

"Captain, all is secure!" boomed a voice. It was Bdubs his first mate, a comic of a man with a booming laugh and unwavering loyalty.

"Good," Ren replied, his voice a low rumble. "Set course for Isla Hermiton. There's treasure waiting for us."

The journey was smooth for several days. The crew was efficient, the ship was fast, and Ren was content. That is, until Bdubs found a stowaway.

"Captain, we found him hiding in the supply hold," Bdubs announced, dragging a smaller figure before Ren.

The stowaway was a young man, barely reaching Ren's shoulder. He had blonde hair tied back with a black bandana and was dressed in simple green and white traveler's clothes. His eyes, however, were sharp and intelligent, not at all like the usual trembling stowaways they found.

"Name?" Ren asked, his voice devoid of emotion.

"Martyn," the young man replied, his voice surprisingly steady. "Martyn Littlwood."

"And why," Ren continued, "should I not throw you overboard, Littlwood?"

Martyn met Ren's gaze unflinchingly. "Because, Captain, I can be useful. I have a sharp mind, a quick wit, and I'm not afraid of hard work. Besides," he added with a smirk, "who's going to tell you stories if I'm fish food?"

Ren was taken aback. Most stowaways begged for mercy, but this one offered wit. A flicker of amusement touched his lips.

"Very well, Martyn," Ren said. "You will work for your passage. Bdubs, see that he's put to work."

Martyn proved to be as good as his word. He was a hard worker, always ready to lend a hand. He learned the ropes quickly, both literally and figuratively. He also possessed a remarkable talent for storytelling, captivating the crew with tales of faraway lands and daring adventures. Ren found himself drawn to Martyn's stories, often listening from the shadows, hidden behind his dark glasses.

Days turned into weeks, and a strange camaraderie developed between the pirate captain and the stowaway. Martyn wasn't afraid to speak his mind, often challenging Ren's decisions with a surprising amount of tact. Ren, in turn, found himself listening, considering Martyn's opinions with more weight than he would admit.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple, Ren found Martyn on deck, gazing out at the sea.

"Beautiful, isn't it? " Martyn said, noticing Ren's presence.

"It is," Ren agreed, a rare moment of vulnerability.

"You know, Captain," Martyn said, turning to face Ren, "they say you're a fearsome pirate. But I see something else in you."

Ren tensed, his hand instinctively moving towards the sword at his side. "And what is that?"

"Kindness," Martyn said softly. "And a great deal of loneliness apon your loyalty."

Ren was silent for a moment, his face unreadable behind his glasses. Then, he let out a dry laugh. "Don't let it get around. It'll ruin my reputation."

Martyn smiles at the noticeable lack of disagreement. "Your secret's safe with me."

As they continued their journey, they docked at a small port town to resupply. While there, they met a group of travelers, merchants and explorers, eager to exchange stories and information. It was during this encounter that Martyn and Ren realized the depth of their bond.

One of the travelers, a gruff merchant with a wandering eye, made a rude comment about Martyn, suggesting he was nothing more than Ren's pity project. Before Martyn could react, Ren stepped forward, his dominant left hand resting on the hilt of his sword. His voice, usually a low rumble, was now a dangerous growl.

"Watch your tongue," Ren warned, his ocean eyes, usually hidden, glinting dangerously behind his glasses. "Martyn is under my protection. Insult him again, and you'll regret it. "

The merchant, sensing the danger, quickly backed down, muttering apologies. Martyn was stunned. He had never seen Ren so protective, so openly possessive. It was a side of the pirate captain he had never imagined existed.

Later that evening, as they sat by the fire at the camp near the doc, Martyn turned to Ren. "Why did you do that? " he asked, his voice soft.

Ren shrugged, avoiding Martyn's gaze. "He was being disrespectful. "

"But you've never reacted like that before," Martyn pressed.

Ren sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I don't know," he admitted. "You're. . . different. You're not afraid of me, you challenge me, you make me laugh. I won't let anyone disrespect you."

Martyn smiled, reaching out to take Ren's hand. "Thank you," he said. "That means a lot to me."

The travelers also noticed the subtle changes in Ren's behavior towards Martyn. The fearsome pirate, known for his cold demeanor and ruthless efficiency, was now more relaxed, more approachable. He would often be seen laughing with Martyn, sharing stories, and even, on occasion, offering a rare, toothy smile.

They also observed how Martyn seemed to effortlessly break down Ren's walls. He was the only one who could tease the captain without fear of retribution, the only one who could coax him into sharing his past, his fears, and his dreams. He had a way of seeing through Ren's tough exterior, of reaching the vulnerable man beneath.

One of the travelers, a wise woman named Cleo, approached Martyn one day. "You have a gift, young man," she said. "You see the good in people, even when they try to hide it."

"I just try to be honest," Martyn replied, shrugging. "And I try to find something to like in everyone."

Cleo smiled. "And in doing so, you bring out the best in them. Ren is a good man, but he's been hurt. You're helping him heal."

Martyn looked out at the sea, where Ren was overseeing the loading of supplies. He knew that Cleo was right. Ren was a good man, but he was also a man with secrets, with scars. Inside and out. And Martyn was determined to help him heal, to break down the walls he had built around himself, one story, one laugh, one touch at a time.

The journey continued, and the bond between Ren and Martyn deepened. They faced storms, battled rival pirates, and discovered hidden treasures. Through it all, their connection remained strong, a beacon of hope in the often dark and dangerous world of piracy.

One day, as they sailed towards the horizon, Martyn stood beside Ren at the helm of 'The Red Winter'. The sun was setting, casting a golden glow on the water.

"What do you see in the future, Ren?" Martyn asked, his voice filled with curiosity.

Ren looked at Martyn, his ocean eyes, now visible without his glasses, reflecting the warm light. "I see adventure," he said. "I see treasure. And I see you, by my side."

Martyn smiled, meeting the only eyes he ever wanted to see. "Then I see a future worth fighting for."

As 'The Red Winter' sailed into the sunset, Ren knew that he had found something more valuable than any treasure, something more precious than any adventure. He had found love, acceptance, and a reason to believe in a brighter future. And it was all thanks to a stowaway with a sharp wit, a kind heart, and a way of seeing through the walls that Ren had built so high.

Notes:

Sooo, I was listening to the music that Vinny Marchi (highly recommend) has put out and got inspired to make at least a oneshot based around a fantasy and pirate world

And what better characters to star other than Martyn and Ren

If you liked this and want to see an actual story about this, feel free to ask as I might just feel inspired to fill out the story
