Most Beautiful

Summary:

"Come on, Damian," Tim pressed. "Just humor us. Who do you think is the most beautiful woman?"

Damian’s posture stiffened. He regarded them with a look that could freeze magma. "The fact that you even require an answer to such an obvious question is…insulting."

A ripple of nervous energy went through the group. Damian's pronouncements were rarely benign.

He took a deep breath, as if preparing for a monumental task. "The most beautiful woman is, without question, my mother, Talia al Ghul."

Work Text:

The sterile, chrome-plated environment of the Justice League Watchtower buzzed with the low hum of advanced technology. The monthly superhero meeting had just concluded, leaving the older, seasoned heroes to debrief and the younger generation to…well, debate the merits of beauty, apparently.

Dick Grayson, ever the charismatic heartthrob, was holding court, gesturing emphatically. "Come on, guys, it's obvious! Starfire is radiant! She's got that otherworldly charm, the beautiful orange skin, the…you know…everything!"

Jason Todd, aka Red Hood, scoffed, leaning back in his chair with an exaggerated eye roll. "Radiant? More like radioactive. Give me someone with a bit more…edge. Like Artemis. Now, that's a woman who can handle herself, and she looks damn good doing it."

Tim Drake, ever the pragmatist, raised an eyebrow. "Artemis is…intense. I'm going with someone a bit more approachable. Maybe Bumblebee? She's smart, funny, and undeniably beautiful."

The debate raged on, each Titan and former Robin championing their chosen female superhero with the fervor of a lawyer defending a client. Wonder Woman was cited for her goddess-like strength and grace. Zatanna for her enchanting aura and captivating wit. Supergirl for her wholesome, girl-next-door charm combined with Kryptonian power.

Meanwhile, in the periphery, the older Leaguers – Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman herself, and Green Lantern – watched with amusement. Superman chuckled. "Remember when we argued about who was the strongest?" he said to Batman. "Simpler times."

Batman grunted, his gaze fixed on his youngest son, Damian Wayne. Damian, Robin, the current Boy Wonder, was conspicuously silent, his arms crossed, his face a mask of barely suppressed disdain.

Finally, Dick, ever the instigator, turned to Damian with a mischievous grin. "Alright, Demon Brat, what about you? Who's your pick for the most beautiful superheroine?"

Damian scoffed, his dark eyes flashing. "This is a ridiculous exercise. A waste of valuable training time."

Silence descended upon the room. It was the kind of silence that followed a particularly shocking plot twist in a soap opera. The older Leaguers exchanged knowing glances, while the younger heroes were…well, speechless.

Dick was the first to find his voice, sputtering, "Talia al Ghul? Your mother? Damian, she's…she's a supervillain! And…your mother!"

Damian's eyes narrowed. "Her alignment is irrelevant. And yes, she is my mother. Are you deaf as well as aesthetically challenged?" He straightened his posture, his voice ringing with conviction. "Anyone who suggests otherwise is either a liar, blind, or both. And I suggest you choose your next words carefully." A subtle threat hung in the air, sharp and dangerous.

Jason, never one to back down from a confrontation, smirked. "Come on, kid, even you can't seriously think your mom is, like, universally considered the most beautiful. She's got that whole…evil mastermind thing going on. Kind of hard to overlook that."

Damian's hand tightened on the hilt of his katana. "My mother is revered. Feared, yes, but also revered. Her beauty is undeniable. Her charisma is legendary. Men of power, influence, and…yes, even good looks, bend over backwards for her attention. They would offer her the world, their very lives. So, do not attempt to diminish her."

Tim, ever the peacemaker, intervened. "Okay, okay, let's just…agree to disagree. Different strokes for different folks, right?"

"There is no 'agreeing to disagree' when truth is at stake," Damian retorted, his gaze unwavering. "And another thing. No man deserves her."

This pronouncement was met with more stunned silence.

Dick, ever the brotherly figure, cautiously asked, "Even…Batman?"

Damian's eyes flashed with an intensity that surprised even Batman himself. "Especially Batman. He is the last one who deserves her. He had her affection, her loyalty, and he squandered it. He betrayed her trust. He is unworthy."

The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a batarang. Batman merely remained silent, his expression unreadable. He knew better than to argue with Damian about Talia. It was a losing battle.

Damian continued, his voice laced with a quiet fury. "I have seen firsthand how my mother is treated. The Al Ghul are considered royalty. My mother is like an Empress, with a long list of…consorts. Men vie for her attention. They bring her gifts, offer her alliances, pledge their undying fealty. I saw it even when I was a toddler. Men and women alike fell for her charms. Some even offered to be my stepfather," he added with a grimace, "or gifted me things in hopes of ingratiating themselves to her." A hint of annoyance flickered across his face. "Some even offered Batman advice on how to win her over when she visited Gotham."

Batman subtly tensed. That was… certainly a difficult period.

"She is the most beautiful, the most powerful, the most charismatic woman I know. And any man who disrespects her, or dares to suggest that she is anything less than extraordinary, will face my wrath."

He surveyed the assembled heroes, his gaze daring them to contradict him. Nobody did.

The older Leaguers, having witnessed the entire exchange, exchanged knowing smiles. Superman clapped Batman on the shoulder. "Well, Bruce, it seems you have a very…protective son."

Batman grunted. "Protective is an understatement. Obsessive is more accurate."

Wonder Woman chuckled. "It's admirable, in a way. He clearly loves his mother very much."

"Yes," Batman said, a hint of resignation in his voice. "Perhaps a little too much."

The discussion, predictably, ground to a halt. Nobody wanted to cross Damian Wayne when he was defending his mother's honor. It was a battle best avoided.

Later that evening, back in the Batcave, Alfred Pennyworth, the ever-observant butler, approached Batman.

"Master Bruce," he said, a twinkle in his eye. "I couldn't help but overhear young Master Damian's…spirited defense of his mother earlier today."

Batman sighed. "Don't remind me, Alfred."

Alfred chuckled. "It was rather…entertaining. He certainly has a unique perspective on things."

"Unique is putting it mildly," Batman muttered.

Alfred paused, a thoughtful expression on his face. "You know, Master Bruce, in a way, he's right. Despite her…questionable choices, Ms. al Ghul is a remarkable woman. And she does possess a certain…allure."

Batman raised an eyebrow. "Alfred, are you saying you find Talia al Ghul attractive?"

Alfred chuckled again, a hearty, genuine sound. "Good heavens, no! I'm far too old for such things. But I can appreciate her…presence. She has a certain…power about her. It's not hard to see why men are drawn to her."

Batman remained silent, considering Alfred's words. He knew Talia was dangerous, manipulative, and ruthless. But he also knew she was intelligent, passionate, and fiercely loyal to those she cared about. He had seen glimpses of the woman Damian described, the woman revered and adored.

He sighed again. "It's complicated, Alfred."

"Indeed, Master Bruce. As is everything when it comes to Ms. al Ghul."

He paused before adding, "Perhaps it's best to simply let Master Damian continue to believe what he believes. It's…comforting to see him so passionate about something. Even if that something is his mother."

Batman nodded slowly. "You're probably right, Alfred. Some battles are not worth fighting. Especially when they involve a teenage assassin and his…complicated family dynamics."

He turned back to his computer, the glow of the screen illuminating his face. The image of Talia al Ghul, beautiful and enigmatic, flickered in his mind. He shook his head, trying to focus on the task at hand. But he couldn't help but wonder…was Damian right? Was Talia truly the most beautiful woman in the world?

He quickly dismissed the thought. He had far more pressing matters to attend to. But deep down, a small part of him, the part that had once been captivated by Talia's charm, couldn't help but wonder. And perhaps, just perhaps, that was exactly what Talia had intended all along.
