No, No, No.
This could not be happening. She saw it, she saw the gold. It was gold. She, they, were so close.
Breathe.
She needed to breathe. But what could she do now? Mira and Zoey knew her secret now. would they be able to keep up the Honmoon? They had to but how?
Finally, Rumi’s feet hit the bottom of the stairs, she could stop running. She only managed a few steps before looking up to see Mira and Zoey.
“What?” She breathed out.
How were they here? Were they faster than her?
“How are you here? You were just on stage?” Rumi said trying to decode the mystery in front of her. “That wasn’t you?” she sighed happily.
They didn’t hate her. They didn’t just publicly humiliate her. They were still her friends.
“Thank goodness.” She said taking a step closer to them but as she did, they both quickly stepped back.
They were scared of her. Why were they scared of her?
She looked down at herself. Her patterns, not only did she still have her patterns, but they were glowing in a way she had never seen before.
“No, no, no.” She chanted holding herself.
“How do you have patterns?” Zoey asked not believing what she was seeing.
“These are supposed to be gone. You where never supposed to see.” Rumi said as if that explained everything.
“You were hiding this from us this whole time?” Mira asked, balling up her fist to hide her hurt voice.
“No! I have a plan to erase them. Juni was supposed to-“ Rumi tried but Zoey interrupted her.
“Juni? You’re working with him?”
“No, no, no!” Rumi said quickly. “I was using him to fix all this, to fix me. So, we could all do our duty.” She said in one breath. “We could all be strong together.”
“How could we be together if we can’t tell your lies from your truths, Rumi!” Zoey said, her voice was ice cold.
Mira sighed “I knew it was too good to be true.” She mumbled.
“Mira no! Didn’t you see? See the gold? We’re so close.” Rumi said unsure if she was trying to convince them or herself.
They didn’t respond, only took a step back, a step away from her.
“No, don’t leave!” she begged. “Don’t leave.” She tried again more forcefully. Again, they stepped away from her. “I can still fix it!” She yelled her voice corrupted.
Her demon side showed as the Honmoon flashed purple, not the brilliant gold it once was.
Mira and Zoey watched the wave wash over them before looking back at Rumi, at the cause of it.
It was Rumi’s turn to step back. The purple wave was her fault. The Honmoon wasn’t gold because of her. Everything Celine, her mother, and all the demon hunters before her. Everything they had worked so hard for, she was corrupting it.
A sudden light pulled her back. Mira was holding her spear ready to strike her. Rumi looked at Zoey. They couldn’t both think this was the end. Could they?
“Zoey. Please.” Rumi begged. She honestly didn’t know what she was begging for. For them to help her fix this or for them to make it as fast and painless as they could.
But Zoey wasn’t looking at her. Her eyes were trained on something, but it wasn’t Rumi, she was looking right through her. A soft light from her hands slowly shifted into her throwing daggers.
Rumi lowered her head. She accepted her fate. If she was going to be killed, she was thankful it was by the two people she loved the most.
Only the attack never came instead she heard the tell, tell, sound of a demon being killed and turned into smoke.
Rumi looked to her side, at the source of the sound, to see two demons puff away. She turned back to Mira and Zoey just in time to see Mira reaching out to her. Rumi didn’t have time to react before Mira pushed her down, jumping behind her and stabbing a demon right in the chest.
Was she so out of it she didn’t even know there were demons behind her? But that would mean Mira and Zoey didn’t pull their weapons on her?
“Your… You’re not mad?” Rumi asked almost too scared to talk, but she needed to know.
Mira turned to her, brows furrowed, and teeth bared. She suddenly grabbed Rumi by her collar. “Mad? I’m absolutely pissed off!” She yelled, pulling Rumi so she was eye level.
Rumi tried to stand tall to balance herself, but Mira was holding on so tight it wouldn’t have mattered.
“You lied to us all this time! All while listening to us spill everything! Our secrets, our deepest thoughts, the ugliest parts of us! My broken family! Zoey’s mental issues! And you couldn’t even be bothered to trust us!?”
“Mira.” Zoey put her hand on Mira’s shoulders trying to calm her down.
“I…I…” Rumi tried.
“No!” Mira snapped cutting her off. Dropping her spear, which faded away before it hit the ground, and grabbing Rumi’s collar with both hands now. “You had your chance to talk, it’s my turn. We’ve fought side by side. Did all that blood, sweat, and tears mean nothing to you!”
“What? No!” Rumi tried but Mira didn’t let her.
“Then why!” She yelled, shaking Rumi. “Why couldn’t you tell us!”
Rumi grabbed Mira’s arms, not trying to pull her off, but trying to stabilize herself. “I didn’t want you to hate me!” She yelled back.
“You absolute Dumbass!” Mira yelled suddenly, pulling Rumi into a kiss.
A stab, a punch, maybe even a headbutt, all the things Rumi was ready for. A kiss? Not so much. She was too surprised to fully enjoy the kiss but as soon as Mira’s lips left hers all she felt was the cold absent.
“Wow.” Zoey gasped.
Mira pushed Rumi back, she stumbled but somehow managed to stay on her feet. “I love you.” Mira said more of a whisper, so quiet that Rumi almost didn’t hear her.
When neither Rumi or Zoey said anything Mira balled up her fists.
“I love you both okay!” She yelled.
“Mira.” Zoey said softly reaching out for Mira’s hand. But Mira pulled away before she touched her.
“No!” Mira snapped. “Not like a family. I love you guys.”
Zoey just smiled and reached up to cup her face between her hands. This time Mira didn’t pull away. Zoey felt like she was going on pointe as she tiptoed to reach Mira’s lips.
Mira tried to push it back but a single tear fell from her eyes.
Zoey dropped back to her normal height and took Mira’s hand in hers. She walked to Rumi leading Mira behind her. With her free hand she reached up and cupped Rumi’s cheek.
Rumi couldn’t help but lean into Zoey’s touch. Again Zoey had to get on tiptoes, not that she minded. Especially when her lips were on Rumi’s. When Zoey pulled away she took Rumi’s hand in hers and put Mira’s hand in Rumi’s
Tears fell from Rumi’s eyes, her lip quivered. “I love you guys!” She yelled wrapping her arms around both of them.
Zoey and Mira didn’t hesitate and wrapped their arms around each other and Rumi.
“Girls stop this fighting!” Bobby yelled running up to them. “Hoo, okay hold on.” He said putting his hands on his knees and sucking in air trying to catch his breath. “Why is this stadium so big?” He asked no one in particular.
The girls let go of each other, wiping their eyes and making sure their lipstick wasn’t smeared.
“Okay. Okay! Girls you can’t fight we have to work this out.” Bobby said ready to stand his ground.
“It’s okay Bobby. Were okay.” Rumi said holding Zoey and Mira’s hands tightly.
“Yeah, we’re good.” Mira sighed almost dreamily.
“More than good.” Zoey said.
Bobby looked between the girls confused but quickly pulled out his phone. “O…Okay. Well then, we need a game plan because Saja Boys are taking advantage of this and having a concert.”
“No! Their…” Rumi said but stopped herself.
“Come on!” Mira said pulling them along.
“Don’t worry we’ve got this Bobby!” Zoey called out to him as they rush passed him.
“Wait girls! We need to figure this out!” He called after them. But they were already down the hall. “Rumi! When did you get tattoos?”
