Work Text:
Sunny poured Jake a cup of coffee and set it in front of him. “So, it’s your first day off in a few months. What are you going to do with it?”
He hummed and sipped from the coffee, rubbing sleep from his eye. “I was thinking of spending it with you.”
“Awww, babe.” She kissed his cheek. “That’s very sweet, but you know I have to work today.”
“I do know. I still wanna hang out with you. I can make you lunch and keep you company….”
She sighed. “You’re sweet but my job requires a lot of concentration. I don’t think I’ll be much fun.”
Jake pulled her closer by the waist and kissed her. “I don’t need you to be fun. I just wanna be with you.”
She giggled. “Charmer,” she teased, tapping his nose. “If you insist, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
-----------
Jake, as promised, made Sunny a lunch. He may have taken a little longer than necessary to make the stir fry and plate it nicely because, as she warned, Sunny’s day was quite boring. He knew her days guiding Tess around crime scenes and solving murders were more interesting, but that wasn’t every day. Today had been spent sorting socks and checking bananas for ripeness and navigating a doctor’s office. She was very attentive to each user, of course, guiding them along with a bright voice and words of encouragement.
He’d actually spent most of this day just watching her, cataloging her little smiles and eye rolls. He doesn’t think he’ll ever get tired of watching her.
Were there many other productive things he could’ve done with a day off? Certainly. He could’ve got in a work out, gone to the store, called his mother, hung out with some friends, or any number of things.
But he didn’t want that. He just wanted to be with his girl.
“Here we are,” he said softly, mindful of her setup as he placed her plate. A quick glance at the screen showed some kind of museum display about gems. “Huh, this looks fun.”
“Not the word I’d use, but okay.” Sunny took her plate and started eating. “We’re on a date. Chelsea here is having a good time; I think she could do better.”
“Oh? Why don’t we like the date?”
“He showed up 10 minutes late, his hair is a mess, and he didn’t even pay for her entry to the museum. Plus, he’s like a 5 at best.”
Jake hummed and took his seat next to her, resting an arm over the back of her chair. “Definitely poor form. But if she’s having a good time….”
“Don’t worry, I’m keeping my mouth shut. Oh! Chelsea! Veer left to avoid the column at 2 o’clock.”
Jake sat back and resumed watching Sunny work. It wasn’t the most exciting day he could’ve had, but he wouldn’t trade it for the world.
