Chapter 1: Letters

Chapter Text

“Twilight, Hyrule, and I am on watch tonight right?” Time asked the captain.

After gaining an approving nod from Warriors he looked around the camp. “Anyone know where the Skyloftian ran off too?”

“Ha! Sky running. In that case he’s probably lying on the ground somewhere.” Legend laughed.

Just then the said hero walked through the thicket of trees into the small clearing the Chain managed to find. He let out a long breath and fell to his knees breathing hard.

“M-mails h-here,” he said in between pants. Sky held up a small pile of letters tied together with a thin blue string.

Twilight took the letters from his hands and patted him on the back. He began to pass out the letters to their respective Links.

“Wind is this your Hylian?” Twilight asked the sailor.

“Yep!” His smile beamed as he took the letter from him.

Wind held the letter very carefully and gently opened it. He always treasured the letter his little sister sent him. He couldn’t wait to see her and grandma soon….

Dear Link,
I hope you’re doing well. Aryll wanted me to write this for you; said she wasn’t able to do it herself…
Link, your Grandma died.

Wind froze in shock tears already pooling in his eyes. Tetra had to be joking right? This was just a joke. He forced himself to keep reading in hopes that Tetra would be lying.

He should have known she never would have joked about something like this.

I’m sorry Link. I heard from Aryll that she wasn’t in pain when she died. She passed away over night, most likely from old age. Aryll has been staying with us since then. She’s safe and just wants to see you.
I know you don’t have control over the portals and where they take you, but please try to come see her. She needs you.

-Tetra

A tear slipped from Wind’s eye and fell onto the letter smearing the ink. He didn’t move from his position reading the words over and over thinking that they would somehow sift and it would all be a lie.

She’s really dead.

It didn’t feel real at all. He should have been there! He should have been able to hug Aryll and tell her everything would be okay. But he wasn’t.

All because of so called Goddess. Why bring him on this journey if it would only cause pain!

“Wind you alright?” Time asked. His words heavy with concern.

‘Am I alright?” Wind asked himself. ‘Grandma’s dead and I wasn’t there.’

Time never got his answer because before he did the sailor ran into the forest with the cursed paper still in his hand.

“Wind!” Time called at the running hero.

“Where’s he going?” Legend asked.

“Time did something happen?” Warriors said. The Chain had got silent after the Old Man called after their youngest.

“I don’t know. He just…. Left.” Time admitted.

“I’ll go get him.” Sky out a hand on Time shoulder and have a comforting smile. He quickly went after the sailor afterwards and disappeared into the trees.

“I hope he’s okay.” Hyrule voiced everyone’s thoughts. “What if something happened?”

‘Please be okay, Wind.’ Time thought.

Wind sobbed with his back on the rough bark of a tree. The letter crumbled in his hands and his sleeve soggy and wet from tears and snot.

“No. Please no.” He said again and again. “Come back!”

“Wind?” The familiar voice of Sky echoed around him. The hero sat next to him and put an arm around his shoulder.

Wind melted into the embrace and sobbed into the heroes tunic.

“What happened?” Sky asked rubbing small circles on his back.

“S-she, I can’t, she’s really.” His words were cut off by a new wave of tears.

“Shhhhhh. It’s okay.” Sky hugged his younger brother and held him close making a silent promise to protect him. “It’ll be okay.”

“How can you say that when she really,” Wind tripped over his words and buried his head into his knees.

“You don’t have to say anything. It’s okay. I’ll be here when you’re ready.” Sky smiled at the sailor. “I’ll always be here.”

Wind looked up at him with red eyes and a face smudged with snot and tears. “R-really?”

“Of course.” Sky pressed Wind’s head against his chest and let him cry into the fabric of his tunic.

It didn’t matter right now what happened, Sky decided, all that mattered is that Wind will be alright.
