Bowerbird

Summary:

Gil lingers in Lizel's room at the inn, thinking about what it means to be Lizel's. Lizel wakes up for a chat, and a bit more than that.

Set after Chapter 3 of the manga adaptation.

Notes:

The fanfic title is from the song of the same name by molly ofgeography. It really feels like a Gil song (for Lizel).

I was rereading the manga adaptation while waiting for more chapters and for the anime to come out :3 Hoping we get a novel translation at some point, too.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Starlight fell over Lizel’s body as Gil ran his hands through Lizel’s hair. It was soft and vaguely warm from his skin. The inn was quiet, but for Lizel’s gentle breathing. Despite how warm and focused he could be in day-to-day life, and how powerful he was, he looked particularly vulnerable like this.

“Mmm,” Lizel murmured tiredly while his eyes were shut. “Gil?”

Gil blinked, surprised Lizel had been that awake. He’d been vaguely aware that Lizel wasn’t fully asleep, but… “Sorry to wake you.” That was sort of a lie. He’d wanted to chat, but wasn’t sure how to start the conversation.

“Are you?” Lizel asked as he opened his eyes to gaze up at Gil, knowing more than he should as usual. He was still laying on his side in the bed, and his face showed his weariness from the long day. When he went to bed, he went to bed, and it was difficult to rouse him. But he looked rather sweet now.

Gil pushed that thought down.

“You look pleased about something,” Lizel noted with a smile. “Did you enjoy today, despite everything?”

“I spent time with you,” Gil said as he gazed down at Lizel, feeling a softness in his heart that he wasn’t used to. Ever since he’d first seen the odd noble, he’d been having odd feelings. And now, this man claimed Gil as his own. “It’s never a bad day when I do that.” Considering how uninteresting his life was until he met Lizel, it was the honest truth, even as it felt a bit weird to admit.

Lizel just brought that out of him.

Lizel’s lips widened into a happy smile. “Really?”

Gil sighed and moved forward to sit on the bed in front of Lizel’s chest. He reached out and brushed his hand through Lizel’s hair while the man was watching. Lizel had done this with Studd, in a way, after all, and Studd was pleased.

Lizel’s lips parted slightly, but he didn’t move away from the touch. He even seemed to enjoy it, which only encouraged Gil to keep going.

“Yes, really,” Gil said. “I don’t lie about that sort of thing.”

“What do you lie about, then?” Lizel asked.

Gil scoffed and kept brushing his fingers through Lizel’s hair. “Maybe I’ll tell you someday.”

“Not now?” Lizel asked with a bit of disappointment.

“Not now.”

“That’s mean,” Lizel said before he turned his face so that Gil’s fingers came to rest on his lips. When Gil didn’t move his fingers, Lizel opened his lips and lightly licked the digits.

Gil’s face heated. He hadn’t expected Lizel to do that. The little noble really was so full of intriguing surprises.

“Are you sure you won’t tell me?” Lizel asked before he wrapped his lips around Gil’s pointer finger, lightly mouthing and licking at it.

“I have no idea,” Gil replied as he leaned over Lizel. He pulled his hand away and lowered his face to Lizel’s, until they were face to face. Gil could smell the other man’s breath. It was minty.

Lizel smiled up at him, warmly, almost challenging.

“You were joking about me playing for the other team earlier,” Gil said as he recalled the conversation at the guild. “What did you really mean?”

Lizel winced and said, “Not this, if that’s what you think.”

“And what is this?” Gil asked, still so close, he could feel Lizel’s body heat through the blankets. Gil’s left hand rested behind Lizel’s back.

“What do you want it to be?” Lizel asked, boldly.

Gil frowned before he leaned closer, nearly touching their lips together.

Lizel pushed up the rest of the distance, meeting him, and then Gil pressed down into the kiss.

A bird cried outside the window. Gil could only feel Lizel’s lips on his, the warmth of Lizel against him, the way there were too many layers of clothing between them. Gil moved his right hand to cup Lizel’s left cheek before deepening the kiss. He hadn’t known Lizel all that long, but the gentle noble had quickly burrowed his way into Gil’s heart. inescapably now.

Gil wanted him there. He didn’t let anyone else there, not ever. But Lizel? Gil had room enough to spare.

Lizel reached out his left hand to press against Gil’s chest. Not the push him away, but just to rest there, forming another warm connection between them.

When they broke the kiss, after a moment to breathe, Lizel said, “You can stay in my room tonight… if you want.” The invitation was a little nervous, but there seemed to be a bit of hope to it.

I’m not sure what he did earlier was a signal to me or a joke, Gil thought as he gazed at Lizel. But it’s not a joke now. He gazed down at Lizel for a while longer before standing up to yank his black shirt off, tossing it on the wooden floor with a slight thump. The air in the room wasn’t too chilly, but he still felt bared in a new way before Lizel.

How far do you want to go? Gil wondered, smiling at the noble. Maybe Lizel just meant literal sleeping, but the guy had also been sucking Gil’s fingers. Not just to be playful or to gain information. Lizel clearly wanted something more.

And Gil wanted that, too.

Lizel gazed at him in appreciative curiosity before sitting up a bit. He pulled his own nightshirt up and off and threw it aside, then reached down under the covers towards his legs.

Okay then, Gil thought as he reached down to his pants. They were disposed of quickly, while Lizel was still busy with his. But Gil gave him time to get rid of them.

Lizel pulled up the covers as Gil crawled in over him, before leaning back down to kiss Lizel once more. Their bare bodies pressed against each other, warm under the sheets.

“Have you done this before?” Gil asked, curious. Lizel seemed at once both inexperienced and very experienced. It was just the way he was.

“That’s a secret,” Lizel said with a smile, just like when he’d asked about Gil’s dating history. “Have you?”

“And if I said it’s a secret?” Gil asked as he moved his hand down Lizel’s bare chest, feeling his skin. Lizel’s soft body. He knew Lizel would just say, “That’s fair.”

“That’s fair,” Lizel said, looking unbothered by Gil’s non-response. “We can just do what we want and pretend that’s everything.”

Gil snorted and reached down to grasp Lizel’s cock, gently massaging it. It wasn’t like he really needed to know Lizel’s dating or sexual history. He didn’t care about virginity, and Lizel clearly had people he cared about back home, but he didn’t act like he had a lover. And Lizel didn’t seem like the cheating type.

Lizel shut his eyes in pleasure, but also reached out for Gil.

“I’m fine,” Gil said. He wanted to focus on Lizel, to see what reactions he could draw out of the man.

“Because you want it inside of me?” Lizel asked with another soft smile.

Gil swallowed, again confused by the way Lizel approached every situation. Sure, that’s what Gil wanted, but hearing it said like that…

Lizel kept smiling, and there was a bit of fondness in the look. “I don’t mind.”

“I don’t want you to not mind,” Gil said. It sounded weird. “I…” He just found himself a bit nervous before Lizel. He knew sex could be fun and not the most elegant, and it didn’t quite match what Lizel was. And regardless, given all of Lizel’s hidden depths, Gil wanted to make this good for Lizel.

Lizel smiled softly at him before kissing Gil’s nose. “I want your cock in me, Gil.”

Gil’s heart raced, wondering where Lizel got such a dirty mouth. “Do you have oil or anything?”

“In my bag.”

Searching Lizel’s bag took a while, but Gil found it and came back under the covers for another kiss. He used the moment to push Lizel’s left leg back towards the noble’s head. Then he pulled back and kissed his way down Lizel’s pale thigh.

“Gil…” Lizel murmured hungrily. He was already getting ruffled up just like this.

Gil opened the corked bottle, wondering when Lizel got it and if it was, like most things, from Judge. He then poured the oil onto his fingers. Then he set the bottle aside and pressed his fingers to Lizel’s entrance, feeling the soft bud part before him.

“What did you think about before this?” Gil asked. “When you were alone, pleasuring yourself? Or is that a secret too?” He assumed that’s why Lizel had the oil, anyway, unless he was just waiting for Gil to make a move.

“A mix of things,” Lizel replied as Gil’s finger pressed inside him, thrusting in and out. Lizel breathed heavily, clearly trying to calm himself. “But you, sometimes.” He smiled softly. “Maybe more recently. I felt a bit bad about it.”

Gil’s heart sped up, imagining Lizel thinking of Gil while getting himself off. “Me doing anything specific?” Though he wondered if it was something from Lizel’s home that Gil couldn’t manage. He’d try all the same. He didn’t want to constantly be compared to whoever – if anyone – Lizel had been with before other than positively.

“No,” Lizel said as Gil pressed a second finger inside Lizel’s body. “This is better.” He was honest, then, not just faking it.

Gil snorted and kept working Lizel open, trying not to show he was pleased. The noble murmured pleasantly and pushed back against Gil’s fingers, even when Gil added a third finger.

“Gil,” Lizel begged. “Please.” He squirmed a little, pushing back even more on Gil, clearly desperate.

Gil pulled his hand out and then moved his body up and forward, pushing his cock inside Lizel’s entrance. It was a bit tight, but Gil moved slowly deeper, watching it disappear into Lizel’s body with more than a little pleasure.

Lizel groaned and put his hand on his own cock, pumping it just like Gil had.

Of course he noticed that, Gil thought. Lizel was always so put together, and seeing him come apart like this was beautiful, even as he kept with Gil’s pacing.

Gil hadn’t had time for people in his life. They were boring or distracting or corrupt. Lizel was different: he was a handsome mystery wrapped up in this pretty package. Speared on Gil’s cock with his left ankle hanging up over his head, he was even better.

Gil moved deeper inside Lizel. It was still somewhat tight but increasingly comfortable, and very warm.

“Gil,” Lizel begged sweetly. Not that serious voice from before when he’d been telling off that B-ranker annoyance. Gil almost wanted him to use that voice. But he didn’t need to be reminded of that chaff here.

“If you want something,” Gil said as he leaned forward, moving his right hand up Lizel’s left thigh to feel Lizel’s shivers, “you’re going to have to say it, Lizel.”

“I want you to do what you want,” Lizel said with a soft smile. “I want everything you can give me.”

“It’ll cost you,” Gil said as he pulled out, making Lizel look a bit hurt, like he’d been rejected. Then Gil shoved back inside, making Lizel moan loudly and arch his head back. His hand on his cock squeezed hard. He wasn’t afraid though: just ready for whatever Gil could give him.

“Imagining my hands on you?” Gil asked as he pressed his knees down on the creaky inn mattress, feeing the blanket press on his back. “Imagining me holding you? Wrapping my mouth around you?”

Lizel bit his lip with want.

Gil placed his left hand on Lizel’s, and he could feel how much Lizel was shaking. Later, he’d wrap his mouth around Lizel, tasting his release.

For now, he thrust in and out and watched and listened as Lizel’s moans grew louder. Maybe they’d even bother their neighbors, but it wasn’t like no one else got up to anything in this inn.

“What makes me yours?” Gil asked.

“I…” Lizel had to breathe deeply. “What?”

“What makes me yours?” Gil repeated. “That you paid for me?” He thrust a bit harder, knowing it was making Lizel more frenzied and distracted.

“You’re…” Lizel breathed in deeply as his eyes glazed over a bit. “The money maybe but… you found me. You help me. You stay with me.” He squeezed Gil’s shirt, “Need you, Gil.” He was so beautifully desperate now.

Gil grunted as he came hard inside Lizel, and was a bit annoyed at himself, especially since he hadn’t given a warning or asked if Lizel was okay with that in advance. “Sorry, I—“

Lizel cried out as he spilled in their hands. Both of them shook around their release.

Gil's hand moved carefully off Lizel's, to let him have more freedom of movement.

Lizel pulled Gil down for another kiss. Afterward, when they parted for air, Lizel murmured, “Mine.” He smiled dreamily up at Gil, clearly not upset about anything.

Gil found himself smiling. Liking that. “Yours.” He leaned down for another kiss.
