Work Text:
Richie had just finished shoveling the snow from the driveway. He was thinking about a nice hot cocoa to warm himself up when a blast of snow hit his ass. He turned to see Eddie primed with another snowball in hand.
Richie smirked "Oh, it's ON!" He barely had time to move before his smug bastard of a boyfriend hit him again but this time right on his mouth.
Thinking fast he hit behind the Escalade, there was a mountain of snow on the lawn beside it so he readied his weapons.
With 5 snowballs primed in his arms, he shot out from behind the car to find the front yard empty. How odd. It was quiet, too quiet.
Just as he opened his mouth to call out Eddie's name, he was hit on the top of the head by Eddie who was now standing on the balcony.
"Oh! That's how you want to play it? Come down here and face me like a man, Eddie baby" he laughed.
"No, I don't think I will." Eddie smirked
"You cheeky shit" Richie threw a ball up to the balcony but missed completely, the snowball landing on the railing instead.
Knowing that he would have no chance at winning from this angle, he ran inside and up the stairs. Snow and water trailing behind him. He knew Eddie would be annoyed but it really was his own fault for not keeping it outside.
When he reached the balcony, he found it empty again. Suddenly he heard running down the stairs so he followed the sound leading him to the backyard.
Richie walked out casually, a snowball in his hand "There's nowhere to run, Eds. Your fate has caught up with you" he smirked.
The snowball he threw hit Eddie right on the nose and Richie let out a loud cheer. Raising his hands in celebration and forgetting about the final three snowballs.
Realising his mistake, he saw Eddie reading his last snowball in hand. Thinking fast, Richie jumped to the left but slipping on his landing foot. He fell on the patio, hitting his head rather hard before briefly passing out.
"Richie!" Eddie yelled, running to his aid. He knelt down and cradled his head in his hand.
Richie was only out for a few seconds but when he awoke he saw Eddie looking down at him, eyes concerned and watery.
"Honey, I'm so sorry" Eddie lamented.
Richie dazedly looked up at him with a drunk looking smile on his face, voice slightly slurring "Isokay baby. Accident happens"
"Fuck, baby. You've got a concussion. We have to get you checked out"
Richie chuckled "I-fiiine baby"
"Absolutely not, no. We are taking you to the hospital to make sure it's just a mild concussion. I'm not taking any chances here Richard"
Oh damn, full name. Okay, this is serious.
Eddie helped him up and got him to the car and off they were to the nearest hospital. Richie's speech was back to normal by the time they got there but that didn't deter Eddie in making sure he got fully checked out.
After a few scans, and Eddie insisting he get the FULL check out, he was fine to go home with the confirmation that it was just a mild concussion and that rest was the best thing for his partner.
Once they got home, Eddie ran a bath for Richie, with the light off and candles lit around the room, he made sure he was comfortable before getting in behind him.
"Stop beating yourself up, I can feel the guilt radiating off you" Richie whispered as he turned in Eddie's arms. He rested his head on Eddie's chest.
"It's my fault that you got hurt, if I hadn't started the stupid snowball fight"
"Then we would've had a regular night of movies and cuddling. Which I'm not opposed to, at all but this adds some excitement to our routine, don't you think?" Richie suggested.
"Too much excitement. Too much anxiety" Eddie mumbled looking away from his boyfriend.
Richie reached up and turned his face towards him "Hey, hey, I'm alright. We went to the hospital and got all the right tests and they said it was mild. No reason to worry anymore about it. I'm here and I'm good, we're good." He said lifting up on his hips and wrapping his arms around Eddie's neck. As Eddie wrapped his arms around Richie's waist, Richie leaned into him and kissed him softly on the mouth. A lingering kiss that was filled with so much love and adoration.
"I love you baby" Richie said against Eddie's lips.
Eddie smiled "I love you too, sweetheart"
Richie and Eddie both knew it would take a day or two for Eddie to really forgive himself for what happened and that was okay. Eddie needed to process at his own pace and Richie completely got that supported it.
It took a few more days for Richie to fully recover from his headache and light sensitivity but he and Eddie had both dealt with far worse physical injuries.
Plus, it gave Richie an excuse to cuddle in bed all day watching movies with Eddie and that was pretty close to paradise for the recovering comedian.
