Announcement: ECON 101

Bang Chan | Teacher [Sunday, 1:40pm]

Hello, and welcome to the start of a new semester! I’m Chan, and I’m going to be your Graduate Student Instructor for Dr. Kim’s Economics 101 course this semester. Just as a reminder, this class is entirely online and asynchronous, so a large portion of your grade will come from your contributions to the weekly class discussion boards! It’s also only a partial term course, so it will only last six weeks (and is quite accelerated). I’m super excited to get to know you all, and I want you all to know each other, too. So, I’d appreciate it if you could answer these questions in this discussion thread by 11:59pm on Tuesday:

  1. Your name, pronouns (if you’re comfortable), and what you’re studying! No worries if you’re not sure yet—just feel free to put down a subject that interests you.
  2. Why are you taking this class? Are you interested in the material? Just taking it for your gen ed requirements?
  3. What interests do you have outside of school? What are you passionate about?

I can start:

  1. My name is Bang Chan (or Chris—either works!), I use he/him pronouns, and I’m in a PhD program studying advanced statistics.
  2. I’m here because I’m working closely with Dr. Kim on my thesis.
  3. I enjoy making music on GarageBand ☺️

Once you’ve done that, please respond to a few of your classmates and start a discussion about something you find interesting in their answers. Have a great day!

DISCUSSION WEEK ONE

REPLY: Seo Changbin [Monday, 1:32pm]

Hello. My name is Seo Changbin (he/him), and I’m studying music production. I am interested in making sure my friend graduates on time. I don’t actually need this class for anything, but my friend (terrible at math, needs to graduate on time) begged me to take it at the same time as him so that I can help him pass (so he graduates on time). I am passionate about making sure my friend passes this class so that he can graduate on time.

↳ Han Jisung [Tuesday, 11:38am]

Wow! It’s so nice to meet you for the first time! You’re such a kind young man for helping your friend! I’m sure he’s very appreciative! 😃

I’m taking this course both because it’s relevant to my major, and because I really enjoyed the brief economics sections of my classes in high school—I look forward to expanding my knowledge on the subject. Bang Chan | Teacher [Thursday, 1:40pm]

Hello again! Thank you all for responding to the introductory discussion board. This week, we have a reading about the basic laws of supply and demand. For your discussion post, please summarize the reading in your own words and come up with a few questions to get your peers thinking. Once you’ve done so, please respond to your classmates’ questions. Lastly, and I didn’t think this needed to be said, please remember to be kind and civil to your classmates in your responses. These responses are due, again, on Tuesday at midnight.

Also, please keep in mind that we’ll have our online quiz next week!

DISCUSSION WEEK TWO

REPLY: Kim Seungmin [Thursday, 6:19pm]

Good evening! The most important thing I picked up from this reading is the inverse relationship between supply and demand, particularly the laws:

  1. Law of Supply: as price goes up, supply goes up; as price goes down, supply goes down
  2. Law of Demand: as price goes up, demand goes down; as price goes down, supply goes up.

I also took note of the Point of Equilibrium, and my question stems from that concept: in the real world, is it possible to ever reach that perfect balance?

↳ Lee Minho [Monday, 5:02am]

how do you respond so fast

↳ Kim Seungmin [Monday, 8:12am]

Why were you up at five in the morning?

↳ Kim Seungmin [Monday, 8:26am]

I suppose that we both have unanswered questions.

↳ Han Jisung [Tuesday, 5:54pm]

Yeoww!! @seochangbin the nerd talked back to the asshole

↳ Seo Changbin [Tuesday, 6:13pm]

Go do the reading.

↳ Han Jisung [Tuesday, 6:17 pm]

Tough crowd

↳ Lee Minho [Monday, 5:07am]

Hi, Seungmin! Regardless of the speed at which you replied, I find your question ridiculous. The answer is clear: based on shifting market values and near-constant fluctuations in the economy, a true equilibrium will never be reached—there are simply too many variables. Though the article didn’t touch on that, I feel as though that answer should have been obvious.

↳ Kim Seungmin [Monday, 8:13am]

Good morning, Minho! We were asked to create questions that would prompt our classmates to think more critically about the material. I was simply moving my question down to your level!

REPLY: Hwang Hyunjin [Saturday, 3:37pm]

REPLY: Kim Seungmin [Sunday, 5:37pm]

Did anyone understand the fifth question? If I recall correctly, it asked about Demand vs. Quantity Demanded and I got tied up in the wording.

↳ Lee Minho [Sunday, 6:19pm]

“Demand” is the general term for the entire demand curve or the relationship between the consumers, price, and quantity. “Quantity demanded,” however, is the exact quantity that consumers want at a specific price (ie. one specific point on the curve). It’s essentially a larger view as opposed to a much more narrow one.

Bang Chan | Teacher [Wednesday, 1:40pm]

Hello! I’m sending out this week’s homework a little early to make sure you all have enough time to prepare your submission. I’ve assigned you each four econ-related terms (the attached pdf has a list) and am asking you all to do a brief write-up on each of them. Your brief description should consist of (a) an explanation/definition and (b) context within the course. Each description should be four-five sentences, and you can submit your work in the assignment labeled “Term Description Assignment.” As far as the class discussion goes, I’m going to ask you to each pick one of the terms you wrote about and explain it to your classmates, using examples and providing equations where necessary.

Both the assignment and the discussion post are due at 11:59 next Tuesday.

DISCUSSION WEEK FOUR

REPLY: Seo Changbin [Wednesday, 4:33pm]

My terms are surplus and shortage. Whenever a market isn’t perfectly balanced–that is, whenever it’s not at its equilibrium point (where the supply and demand are equal)–there’s either a surplus or a shortage. A surplus is when there’s more supply than demand, and it’s calculated by subtracting the demand from the supply at any given price. Alternately, a shortage is when there’s more demand than supply, and is calculated by subtracting the supply from the demand.

↳ Han Jisung [Wednesday, 4:35pm]

Wow so smart and cool. 😍.

↳ Seo Changbin [Wednesday, 4:37pm]

Have you done yours yet?

↳ Bang Chan [Friday, 9:52am]

Great work, Changbin!

↳ Seo Changbin [Friday, 11:22am]

Thank you!

REPLY: Kim Seungmin [Tuesday, 4:52pm]

My term is “marginal cost.” Essentially, the marginal cost of a product is how much it would cost to produce the next unit of that good. The goal of business owners is to find the point where marginal cost is equivalent to marginal revenue, meaning that you want the marginal cost to get as close to the marginal revenue as possible without surpassing it.

Marginal Cost = Change in Total Cost / Change in Quantity

For example:

# of Items Produced

Total Cost

Marginal Cost

2

530

3

670

(670-530) / (3-2) = 140

4

770

(770-670)  / (4-3) = 100

5

850

(850-770) / (5-4) = 80

6

950

(950-850) / (6-5) = 100

7

1100

(1100-950) / (7-6) = 150

Because the lowest marginal cost is at five units, that would be the ideal number to produce.

↳ Bang Chan [Friday, 9:54am]

Great work, Seungmin!

↳ Lee Minho [Sunday, 2:43pm]

Horrible wokr seung min

REPLY: Yang Jeongin [Tuesday, 2:13am]

My term is supply. It is how much is made.

↳ Bang Chan [Tuesday, 12:19pm]

This is a great start, Jeongin! Is there any more information you can add about how supply impacts the economy?

↳ Yang Jeongin [Tuesday, 10:21pm]

No

↳ Hwang Hyunjin [Sunday, 2:37pm]

Wow! Great Job! Perfect!

REPLY: Han Jisung [Thursday, 4:47am]

Normal goods are things that have more demand when income rises. An example of this is Cars. When people have more money, they can Cars. When income rises and the demand goes down for something, that thing is an inferior good. This is like not-name brand food or thrifted clothes.

↳ Han Jisung [Thursday, 4:48am]

@seochangbin is it good

↳ Seo Changbin [Thursday, 10:02am]

I know that you know how grammar works. I read over your essay for your history class last week? Why is this so poorly written?

↳ Bang Chan [Friday, 9:55am]

Don’t forget to be kind to your classmates!

↳ Seo Changbin [Friday, 11:24am]

Minho and Seungmin are openly hostile to each other

↳ Han Jisung [Thursday, 10:04am]

This class sends me into fight-or-flight

↳ Bang Chan [Friday, 9:56am]

Hi again! Remember that you can always email me if you need help!

REPLY: Lee Minho [Sunday, 3:20pm]

The term I’m defining is “price elasticity of demand.” The price elasticity of a good or service represents how a price change would impact the demand of that good. If a price change severely impacts demand, that good is elastic; if a price change doesn’t impact demand at all, it’s inelastic. Elastic products are typically those that have a lot of substitutes or aren’t necessary, such as a specific type of plastic water bottle or an expensive vacation. Alternately, inelastic goods are those that are necessary, such as medication. The equation is as follows:

Price Elasticity of Demand = Percentage Change in Quantity Demanded / Percentage Change in Price

When the price elasticity of a good is greater than one, that good is elastic; when it’s less than one, it’s inelastic. Say that the original cost of a water bottle was five dollars, and people bought fifty water bottles at that price. Then, the price increased to six dollars, and people only bought twenty water bottles. The price elasticity of demand would be (50/20) / (5/6) = 2.5/0.83 = 3. Because 3>1, water bottles are inelastic.

↳ Kim Seungmin [Sunday, 3:25pm]

This makes no sense and borders on incoherent. Badly written. 2/10

Subject: Behavior in Econ 101 Class Discussion Posts

Good morning,

I’m reaching out to you both to discuss the content of your replies in our class discussion posts. Frankly, the hostility is incredibly unnecessary and does not contribute to a collaborative work environment. If this continues, I’ll have to inform the professor, who will likely move it along to the dean.

Cheers,

Good morning, and thank you for your concern.

I appreciate your commitment to fostering a productive learning environment, but my learning environment would be worse without the ability to insult Lee Minho. It could begin the derailment of my entire academic path and lead to my dropping out of school.
