Work Text:
The young boy covered in scales looked around the town, more lost than he was in the wilderness. (Run boy run! This world is not made for you.)
The young boy with a pair of wings and tears running down his face backs away from the townspeople. For the first time, afraid of those around him. (Run boy run! They're trying to catch you.)
The young boy with horns atop his head wanted to fight. He didn't want to run. Didn't want to hide. But what other choice did he have? (Run boy run! Running is a victory.)
If only that young boy with a tail knew he would one day find a home worth dying for. (Run boy run! Beauty lays behind the hills.)
If only that young boy, forever a Son of a Dragon, could see himself now, a shining beacon of safety, leading others to a home. (Run boy run! The sun will be guiding you.)
But he doesn't, and he can't, all he can do is run and run and run until the sun has long since set and he can't hear anyone screaming for his head. (Run boy run! They're dying to stop you.)
He is not the only one, he will not be the last, and it is only just beginning for him. (Run boy run! This race is a prophecy.)
That young boy who looked so otherworldly and monstrous was run from town, and no one looked back to wonder if the demon had only been a little boy, just as scared of them as they were of him. (Run boy run! Break out from society)
The young boy covered in scales is older now only by a few years and is in more control, but no less an outsider. He meets a kind little old man who invites him to see what guild life is like. Hesitantly, slowly, oh so carefully, that boy takes his offered hand. (Tomorrow is another day/And you won't have to hide away/You'll be a man, boy!/But for now it's time to run, it's time to run!)
Running so many times has taught the boy to be wary of those offering help. To always know how to get out if he needs to. (Run boy run! This ride is a journey to.)
He knows he's powerful enough to escape. He also knows that without that power, he probably wouldn't need to escape. (Run boy run! The secret inside of you.)
He won't meet others like him until he's almost an adult. In the quiet moments, where no one else can hear, they'll share with each other those scared vulnerable moments. (Run boy run! This race is a prophecy.)
But until then, he looks up at a ship bigger than he's ever seen, about to go onto the water for the first time, desperately hoping, praying, that he won't have to disappear again. (Run boy run! And disappear in the trees.)
That young little boy covered in scales, with trembling wings and tail tucked close to his body, spends his first night safe since his father left. He's safe at last but it will take him years before he feels at home. Before he becomes a young man, and not a little boy, covered in scales, with wings and tail proudly flared for all to see. (Tomorrow is another day/And you won't have to hide away/You'll be a man, boy!/But for now it's time to run, it's time to run!)
“Natsu! Come on, The Vermillion is waiting for us!”
“I'm coming, Happy, just thinking about how much I owe Fairy Tail.”
The town in the valley below doesn't remember the little boy. And none of them will make the connection between the red scaled child they ran out of town and the kind Dragonborn who saved them from a monster.
(Tomorrow is another day/And when the night fades away/You'll be a man, boy!/But for now it's time to run, it's time to run!)
