Tokens of Love

Summary:

'I saved you, and in the saving, I marked you.'

Notes:

Happy Winter Solstice and New Year! 🎉
I hope this year will be a better one for all of us 🥂

This isn't the happiest of stories, but well, I keep thinking about this moment a lot, and this basically wrote itself.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

‘Why do you not want to see him?’

The one lying before him back turned, hunched further, curling inward.

‘He saved me.’

‘I’m sorry. We should have. We wanted to… we… no, I didn’t think… didn’t believe… you still lived. He demanded the impossible... the sea did not suffer us.’

‘He saved me.’

‘Yes, and I will ever be grateful.’

‘He severed my hand.’

‘He did... I am sorry.’

‘I felt every beat of it.’

‘I am sorry

‘I begged him for death.’

‘I am sorry’

‘I craved release; he…’

‘He?’

‘He refused to grant it.... rejected my pleas... inflected pain... condemned me to more suffering… a prolonged bitter ending.’

‘I think… only… he loves you…’

‘Yes… and I will ever bear the tokens of that love.’
