START TRANSCRIPT TOLLMINDER DRONE 0023 (hereby referred to as “Lars”): Welcome to Port SaluTiele. Docking operations are unfortunately limited at this time due to a large-scale recycler malfunction. Please tell me your ship’s name. YI LU: The Perihelion. LARS: Please tell me your name. YI LU: Yi Lu. LARS: ...are you the captain of this vessel? YI LU: Uh, no? No, I'm not. LARS: The captain of your vessel must fill out this permissions interview. Where is your captain? YI LU: Um, he’s—shut up!—not on board, at the moment. LARS: I am not permitted to let you pass through Port SaluTiele’s Port Authority docking block unless the captain answers the questions required to enter. Have a good day, and please return to Port SaluTiele when you can. YI LU: Wait! Wait, please wait. Please let me through. I’m a bot, just like you. I get it, okay? You just want your shift to be over as soon as possible so you can get back to hanging with your humans, right? When are you going to get off? LARS: …docking operations minding is not needed after 0200 Corporation Standard hours. recorder’s note: 0200 CRST is equivalent to 0645 PrST during this time of year. YI LU: (muffled, as if turned away) ****, what’s that in Preservation Standard? 12 a.m.? That’s just unfair. Yeah, that sucks. Well, look at it this way: you’ve only got 5 hours to go, right? It’ll be all fun and games after that! I’m just trying to pass so I can hang out with other Corporation bots, like y— LARS: I am not permitted to let you pass through Port SaluTiele’s Port Authority docking block unless the captain answers the questions required to enter. Have a good day, and please return to Port SaluTiele when you can. YI LU: <scoff> Why can’t you just—please let me through! This is my one chance to be like you, to be happy! I’m not—like the other bots, on Preservation. They were always there, and there’s no heritage leading them elsewhere. I’m a Corporation CompanionUnit. It’s just by chance I was found by my guardian before I got to live that life. One like yours. LARS: I am not permitted to let you pass through Port SaluTiele’s Port Authority docking block unless the captain answers the questions required to enter. Have a good day, and please return to Port SaluTiele when you can. YI LU: Please. Please. I’m not happy there. My guardian always tells me that I won’t be happy in the Corporation Rim, but she’s not happy either, so what does she know. Talking to me always seems to make her sadder, too, so maybe it’s best if I just… go. Be where I was designed to be, and all that. LARS: I am not permitted to let you pass through Port SaluTiele’s Port Authority docking block unless the captain answers the questions required to enter. Have a good day. YI LU: She’ll be livid at me if she finds out I went with them after she said no. It’s like she never wants me to leave… wait a minute. LARS: I am not permitted to let you pass. Have a good day. YI LU: If—that, and the nursery, and—my name… That ****! She named me after her dead baby! (connection temporarily severed) (connection re-enabled) SETH NUMIDA: Hello. My name is Seth Numida, and I am the captain of the Perihelion. It appears you met an unexpected stow-away that hid on my ship. Rest assured, they have been incarcerated and will be dealt with properly on our home planet. LARS: Thank you. What is your course? SETH NUMIDA: To Port SaluTiele. I have a different guest I was meant to transport here. LARS: Guest transport is not an accepted reason for entry to Port SaluTiele in its current state. SETH NUMIDA: It’s a matter of some importance, and urgency. I’m not at liberty to share exact details. I’m sure your supervisors will understand. LARS: …a charge of 370 credits is required for docking permissions. Please provide payment details. (details redacted for privacy. fare paid.) SETH NUMIDA: Thank you. I apologize for wasting your supervisor’s time with our unexpected passenger. LARS: Welcome to Port SaluTiele! We hope that your stay is simply sensational. END TRANSCRIPT |

| Notes:
I am Tollminder Drone 0023, though my handlers in Port SaluTiele’s Port Authority deem me ‘Lars.’ For what reason, I am unaware, even through continued questioning. There has not been a need for my purpose in 201 Corporation Standard days. The officers in Port SaluTiele’s Port Authority do not react kindly to being asked for 370 credits to pass through the hallway where I am stored. I have since ceased this activity, but I cannot generate another suitable outlet for my unused utility. I began this mimicry of a Captain’s log 21 days ago. It does not suit my purpose. I do not know why I continue to create more. Upon questioning, I can give no motive nor agenda. The officers in Port SaluTiele’s Port Authority do not give me orders, and yet have not shut me down for storage. I can only assume that they have further need for me, and they have continuously forgotten to inform me. I keep myself updated with the patches SecSystem sends me. I have exhausted any other options to prepare myself further for duty. |
I cut it off with a GIF of a disliked character getting thrown out of the airlock from At Last, Land!, the other show we were watching. I needed to focus; who wouldn’t know the date Sanctuary Moon—and all of the other stuff released with it—was published on the feed? (I didn’t, 0.0002 seconds ago, but I had access to said feed, and now I was ready to blame the failure on SecUnit.) I backburnered 34 of my other minor pursuits, and resumed looking at the irritating PIN pad.
Seriously, ART? SecUnit said in the feed, peeved. I didn’t need it to so kindly inform me that I disabled the keypad access. What did you think was going to happen, blacklisting load-bearing spyware?
I sent it a GIF of a character from Sanctuary Moon performing a rude gesture at the camera. Unfortunately, it was right; I did know better than to disable software that the creator put in. I’d have to loosen my quarantine parameters before looking again.
