The plan had not been to visit Tendou during an unprecedented heatwave, but there he was, stepping off the airplane into sweltering conditions. The air was thick and tacky with humidity and his skin stuck to him the moment he stepped out of the air conditioned airplane and onto the tarmac.
He couldn’t even manage to pull in a deep breath due to the conditions.
It was ridiculous.
Tendou was waiting for him at the entrance to the airport, surprisingly standing outside in the ridiculous weather rather than inside where it was cool. “Hey,” Tendou grinned, bumping their shoulders together.
It would have been a better greeting if their sweat hadn’t made a suction noise from their shoulders touching. “Missed you,” Ushijima said, his voice low. Despite the heat and humidity, it would have taken all of heaven and earth to stop him from leading in to kiss Tendou in that moment. It had been a grueling ten months since they’d been in the same country. There had been a brief moment in time two months ago when they almost had the opportunity to see one another since Ushijima’s team was visiting Paris for a tournament, but it happened to coincide with Tendou traveling for a chocolatiers exposition in Canada that he didn’t want to miss.
There was exactly one day where they were going to be in the same city with a mere twelve hours of time overlapping, but there had been a strike with the French Airlines that delayed Ushijima’s arrival by sixteen hours.
They’d both mourned their lost moment in time, but clung to the vacation they’d already planned for later in the year.
“Why are you standing outside? It’s brutal out here,” Ushijima asked while they waited for the train that would bring them into the heart of Paris to the small apartment over the chocolate shop.
Tendou winced slightly before turning an apologetic grin on Ushijima. “My apartment doesn’t have air conditioning, so, it’s brutal inside too. I didn’t want to get too cozy in the A/C then go home.”
“Ah,” Ushijima said, understanding dawning on him slowly as he realized that he would be unable to escape the heat during his two weeks in Paris. Then another thought occurred to him. “Doesn’t the shop have A/C?”
“Well, yeah, otherwise my chocolate would melt. I didn’t install it though and the heat is usually welcome. This is worse than usual. Usually I’m cold when I head upstairs for the night.”
The train rocketed through the station and came to a sliding halt in front of them. They joined the throng of people already crowding the train. “I suppose you don’t have much meat on your bones to keep you warm.”
Tendou snorted and leaned against Ushijima; despite the heat Ushijima welcomed it.
When they walked into the apartment an hour later, the heat was worse inside than it had been outside and it nearly staggered Ushijima. Tendou grabbed the dufflebag he had his clothes in and made his way to the bedroom, his shoes kicked messily off by the door.
Ushijima took his time getting his feet out of his shoes before straightening out Tendou’s and pushing them both against the wall.
It didn’t take him long to realize why it was so much hotter inside the building than it had been outside. One look in the bedroom revealed that while Tendou’s windows were wide open to let in any small amount of breeze that may exist, the curtains were stock still because there was no breeze to come. Ushijima huffed and sat on the edge of the bed, unsurprised when Tendou found his way into his lap moments later, tilting Ushijima’s head up and licking into his mouth despite how stale and gross his breath must taste from traveling.
The heat outside was sweltering, but when you yearn for someone for months and months, does that even matter? Within minutes Ushijima was laid out on the bed, naked as the day he was born, with Tendou’s head between his legs. He knew without a doubt that he was soaking the bedspread with sweat, Tendou’s hand on the underside of his thigh slipping occasionally in it too.
There was no way to avoid just how sweaty and disgusting Ushijima felt.
Every gasp felt wetter than the last, the air inside the room filling with more humidity from their activities.
By the time Tendou collapsed on the bed next to him, they knew that they’d have to do laundry. Tendou’s arm slid around Ushijima’s waist, his chin on Ushijima’s shoulder, his red eyes peering down at him. “Sorry about the heat.”
Ushijima hummed, his eyes stinging from the salt collected on his eyelashes and his bitten lip stinging. “You can’t control the weather, Satori.”
“I know,” he said, tipping his head, “But I probably could have bought an A/C to make you more comfortable.”
Ushijima took a deep breath and let it out, like a cat settling down in its spot for the night. “I’m comfortable as long as you’re here.”
Tendou’s Cheshire grin made an appearance for the first time that night. “You sap.”
Ushijima smiled softly at him, his eyes struggling to open on each blink. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” Tendou said, shifting to get comfortable behind Ushijima, resting his forehead against Ushijima’s back. “Get some rest. I’ll wake you when it’s time to go out for dinner.”
He was met, not with a verbal confirmation of the plans, but with a deep breath in, and a light snore on its way out.
Tendou smiled against Ushijima’s back. He was hot and sweaty, but happy and content.
