Chapter Text
Deep in the midst of the crossfire, Neteyam yells out for the small group of Metkayinan villagers he's guiding to stick close to him as he rushes through the battle of opposing Txepkxa armies.
The village along the shores has been destroyed, which has left them rushing through the obstacle course that is the jungle of this island.
The familiarity of the rush and urgency of getting to safety reminds him of about eighteen years ago before his father dragged him away from his home in the forest and out of the war that plagued it.
It's almost hard for him to believe how drastically everything in his life changed just because of that one decision, including himself. He has Aonung to thank for his personal evolving, but drastic and uncontrollable events, and decisions made by adults, did its work in shaping both of them.
It also did its work hurting them cruelly.
The death of the Olo'eyktan, Tonowari, which plunged Aonung into responsibilities that drove him away from home and got him captured by Quaritch. It isn't a good memory, but it did make them reunite with Spider.
He misses his childhood friend, and wonders if he's doing well back in the Omatikayan forest. The boy certainly has to be doing far better than him at the moment.
They've lost many, but saved as much as they could. With Neteyam is his squad of warriors he personally trained just for these missions. They each have villagers of their own to guide through the chaos.
In the past nine months he's seen too many villages burned down, and too many Na'vi scorched alive.
The lands of the Omatikaya are lucky. They're the territory of Nìktun, whose leadership and army are both strong and have deterred the forces of his siblings.
Which has left them to fight amongst each other. Two, specifically have been battling over the many islands of the Metkayina, which they don't classify as such, because the cultures of the Na'vi seem to mean nothing to them.
Hence why many have become nothing more than collateral damage.
Roars, screeches, and many other noises surround them, whilst the heat of the breathed fire sets the grounds aflame and contaminates the air, making the Na'vi cough.
Neteyam had a cloth tied around his face already when he arrived, specifically because of this.
He suddenly slides to a stop because one of the fighting creatures slams into the ground, sliding through the dirt with an injury. The average sized Txepkxa are still around the same size as Leonopteryx, so it could easily have crushed them.
Quickly, Neteyam redirects the villagers. They're all heading to the other side of the island, which isn't that large. There, rafts roped to Ilu are waiting to pull them to safety.
Neteyam and his squad have had to relocate several villages, as Somtra practically begged them to, because the Metkayina population itself has decreased considerably. With villages being combined in safer areas with the few people they have left.
Which made Neteyam train who he would bring with him a bit harshly, but those he chose could definitely handle it.
Maiyu, of course, since she caught on better to his tactics than the rest of his older warriors, who are still home working under Wift, who is his second in command.
He's also brought Niro, a very adaptable and capable young man. Kayola, and Valepi, who have become very skilled in a short time, as well as trustworthy.
Also along with them, on their first mission, are Na'nin and Jye'je, from the village Neteyam and Aonung ended up in when he was injured. They went there asking for help, and Tswayd himself volunteered him and the two orphans that claim him.
The children are also well trained, but that doesn't mean he was actually ready to let them come on such a dangerous mission that has little room for errors.
After making it through the forest, they run out onto the beach, where Tswayd, Maiyu and Valepi's groups are already being loaded on the rafts, and Kayola's group are running across the beach towards the shore.
He fears a little, since he doesn't see the newer additions, but he doesn't let it distract him. He gets the villagers on Ilu, if they're capable of riding on their own, and the rest into a raft.
After they're situated, him and the others turn back towards the forest edge, watching and waiting for the last two groups to show up.
Neteyam- Did you have eyes on them in there?
He turns to Maiyu, and she shakes her head, looking very tense.
Kayola- I'll find them.
Typical of the reckless boy, Kayola nearly rushes back into the forest, but Neteyam grabs onto him.
Neteyam- No.
Kayola- But-
Neteyam- What are the rules?
Kayola- . . . No going back.
Neteyam- Exactly. We were lucky to get out once, don't start playing with that luck.
Kayola exhales deeply in his restraint, and Tswayd appreciates his willingness to go back for them but as an experienced warrior agrees with Neteyam.
Valepi- I see them!
Tswayd's gaze snaps over to where Valepi points, and sees both his kids rushing out of the foliage with just a bit of people with them.
He rushes them, and the instant they get everyone situated, they head out, escaping the battlefield, and going to the nearest safe village.
It's become routine at this point, rescuing, traveling, and returning home until summoned by some other village in danger.
Somtra will get word of the damage, then send for Neteyam, and he'll immediately head out to wherever help is needed. Unfortunately, they don't always make it in time.
Which is why Rotxo and Lo'Kran have made a lifestyle of scouting the waters of the reef people and keeping track of Txepkxa movements; Reporting it straight to Neteyam over the comlink Rotxo has. It helps them predict where help may be needed next.
Chapter Text
After relocating their refugees, not much is said on their journey back home. They're tired, and Neteyam himself still gets deeply disturbed by just how insignificant they are to those large creatures.
When they finally arrive back in Zusawkrr, it's just after dawn, and Neteyam sighs as he walks onto shore with the others in tow.
Though what they had built of their village was important to them, it has all been purposely destroyed. They've been living in their new tree system. It's convenient for avoiding Demon Eaters and staying out the sight of the Txepkxa.
High up in the trees are many woven paths and floors, as well as sturdy dens, similar to the Metkayina village just much higher. The village winds through half forest like a web, and there isn't anywhere on this side of the island they can't reach from above that could be reached from the ground.
Every structure has been covered in foliage to blend in with the surrounding environment and not draw any attention to their home. From above, one can't even tell the structures are there.
Same goes for viewing out from the far waters. Nothing is visible, which is exactly how Neteyam wanted it.
He may have had a problem with running from danger before, but these days he takes pride in their ability to hide and avoid being targeted by any Txepkxa who are just looking for trouble. As if their overwhelming war wasn't enough.
Still, this way of living has kept them alive and well for the most part.
His squad splits up, heading for their own homes as they make their way up the ladders leading to the paths of their village. The bridges shake just the slightest as they walk along them, but not enough to knock anyone off balance.
Before they even reach their den, Neteyam can already hear the light conversation of the rest of his family.
As he steps into the entrance, a smile finally graces his face at the sight of his mate in such a domestic setting. Aonung is sitting next to the basket their baby boy is in, and on his lap is the four year old girl they took in.
His reminiscing mind suddenly plays back the marine boy's reluctance to even mate before, let alone start a family. Mo'dan scarred him, and to this day, Neteyam, Rotxo, and Lo'Kran are still the only ones who know the boy forced Aonung to mate with him.
Neteyam has been through a lot, and so has the love of his life. He imagines losing one parent would be hard enough, but to lose both . . . He still sometimes feels responsible for letting Ronal be killed, but reminds himself it isn't his fault, but the fault of those rebels they dealt with in the Omatikayan forests.
He knows Aonung thinks about how much his parents would've loved to meet their grandchildren, it showed on the sorrowful smile he wore when they introduced their new additions to Jake and Neytiri.
Just eight months ago, they came across Ninali, who was three years old. It was just after being gifted their son, Tsaelan, from Eywa, and the girl's family and village were lost because of the Txepkxa, so they took her in.
Ninali's home was one of only a few Omatikayan villages that were destroyed right at the start of the battles. She's pure Omatikaya, with her hair worn out, save for a couple of beaded braids in the front.
Aonung holds the girl comfortably on his lap, both focusing solely on the baby.
Ninali- He's still so tiny.
Aonung- It'll take a while for him to get as big and strong as you.
Ninali- I like him small, so I can hold him.
She reaches into the basket, gently feeling the boy's curls.
Ninali- Hi Tsae'tsae. Did you enjoy your nap?
Neteyam chuckles fondly at the cute nickname she gave him, which finally earns Aonung's attention.
Aonung- Look who's back, Nín.
She turns to the entrance and instantly beams at the sight of Neteyam walking in with his arms out to her.
Ninali- Sempul!
She runs up to him, jumping into his arms without caring about the mess of his mission still on him, and he rubs her head.
Ninali- I missed you!
Neteyam- I missed you too, my little Nín-flower.
Ninali- Did you bring me something?
Neteyam- Not this time, sorry. I was in a rush.
Typically, he'll find either a stray tooth or claw of a downed Txepkxa to bring to the girl, since she likes collecting them.
Aonung stands from his spot and crosses his arms with a smirk.
Aonung- You look rough.
Neteyam- Thanks, I've been working on it.
The marine male laughs softly at him as he walks up for a hug that squishes Ninali between them but she loves it. After the hug, and a kiss from his mate, he sets their daughter down.
He turns to close their curtains, but stops once he spots Tswayd walking by with the relatively new additions to his squad.
Neteyam- Jye'je, Na'nin, a word.
The loving tone he used with his family vanishes instantly as he calls out to the teens. Their ears pin back as they acknowledge him and walk up to the entrance. Jye'je looks more annoyed, while Na'nin looks fearful.
Tswayd waits for them at a small distance to listen in.
To not interrupt them, Aonung leads Ninali over to his and Neteyam's hanging bed, lifting her up to put her in it as a distraction.
Neteyam- Why were you both behind, and where did half your rescues go?
Na'nin- We lost them-
Neteyam- Lost them? You mean you let them be killed.
Na'nin- . . . Yes, Sir.
Neteyam- Jye'je, how did that happen?
Jye'je- How do you think it happened? They were burned.
Na'nin keeps her head down, fearing for her "brother" when he decides to open his mouth lately. He didn't want to come to Zusawkrr to help, and it shows.
Though irked by his tone, Neteyam overlooks it, since he expects nothing more than this attitude from him. It's why he didn't want the boy on any mission, but Tswayd and Na'nin convinced him.
Neteyam- And whose fault is that?
Jye'je- Yours.
Tswayd- Jye'je. You're speaking to your Olo'eyktan.
Tswayd steps up behind the boy, but Neteyam holds a hand out, letting it pass. Neteyam's people know he was tricked by a Txepkxa into starting this war; Jye'je is the only one here who blames him for it.
Neteyam- What happened out there, Jye'je? Give a straight answer.
Jye'je- She ignored me. I told her to follow, she went her own way.
Neteyam- What?
He looks to Na'nin, who stares at the floor.
Neteyam- Is that true?
Na'nin- I-I'm sorry. He was acting like he knew everything, and kept bossing me around.
Pitifully, she looks up at him, but his gaze is cold.
Neteyam- Never do that again. You just killed those people.
Na'nin- But, he-
Neteyam- He told you right, and you ignored it. That's on you, not him. I don't care how bossy he gets, you should be used to it by now. Get over it, or get used to staying behind.
Na'nin- Yes, sir.
He scans them both, looking at every scrape and scratch they got from the mission.
Neteyam- (sighs) Go get cleaned up so you can get tended to.
Na'nin nods firmly before leaving, and Jye'je follows her lazily, both heading to the lake.
There's a path that leads right over to it, and a ladder that falls down right to the water, keeping them from being on land. Though it wouldn't matter for them since they aren't hybrids.
There hasn't been any sign of the demon eaters, and Neteyam thinks they may have been scared off by the Txepkxa, but they still don't want to push their luck.
Chapter Text
Tswayd aims an apologetic look to Neteyam before following the teens. Once they're gone, he runs his hands along his face tiredly before closing the curtains.
He turns around to look at his mate, who comes over from the bed and brings him into a firm embrace, which he returns. He lies head down on his shoulder, and Aonung rubs his head, helping him finally relax.
Aonung- You get more and more exhausted each time.
Neteyam- It doesn't get any easier or harder, it just weighs more heavily each time I see it. It's draining.
Aonung- I'm sorry you keep having to see it then.
Neteyam- Maybe I deserve to.
Aonung- Don't say that.
He pulls Neteyam back to look him in his tired eyes. He hates when Jye'je runs his mouth and gets Neteyam feeling guilty again, as if the man doesn't do that enough without anyone else's help.
Aonung- Nobody deserves to see or experience any of that. Especially not you. Don't let that little shit get to you again.
Neteyam- Don't call him that, he's not actually that bad.
Aonung- He is when he's talking to you. Let me whip him into shape.
Neteyam- I'm not letting you beat him to a pulp, he's a kid.
Aonung- Maybe I'll ask Tswayd for permission instead.
Neteyam- Aonung.
Aonung- Neteyam.
Neteyam rolls his eyes then cuddles him again, nuzzling his face, which makes Aonung chuckle. He missed his mate while he was away, as well as their daughter, and baby boy.
He breaks from the embrace to go over to the basket Tsaelan is currently looking out of while resting on all fours. He does that when he's ready to move around.
Tsaelan is marine with blue stripes, leg fins, a Metkayina tail, golden eyes, and little curly hair. The boy smiles up at him as he walks over and picks him up, kissing his cheek multiple times.
It makes the tiny boy giggle.
Ninali- Can I hold him? Please, please.
Ninali begs from her spot in the middle of their bed, and he smiles at her.
Neteyam- Yes, but be careful.
Ninali- Yes, sir!
She speaks enthusiastically, liking to call him sir for some reason, but since it's not all the time, it doesn't bother him.
He hands Tsaelan over to his big sister, and she takes him carefully into her arms before leaning onto her back, letting him sit on her while she holds his hands.
Ninali- He's so cute.
She giggles as she plays with him while Aonung and Neteyam watch the sight fondly. Neteyam turns to hug his mate as he watches them play, more glad than ever that he convinced him to start their family over again.
He turns to gaze up at Aonung, taking in the happiness on his face and again letting his mind roam through the past.
This always happens when he's been gone on a mission. His mate ends up on his mind heavily, and while he's determined to just return home to him alive and well, he can't help but let their memories together replay in his mind.
He's watched Aonung transform from the shy boy he once was, to this bold, loving man.
There was a time when Aonung was just a secretly sweet boy, looking out for Neteyam's every need, even after losing his father. A time he was just a confused soul, after losing his memory to a Vanisher in the waters of Paltu.
That event hit them both hard, but coming out of it together strengthened them and soon they were Chiefing in Awa'atlu together for two years until Jake forcefully relieved them of the responsibility, keeping them in the forest.
Aonung was, again, put through it, losing his mother, and dealing with Eywa rejecting him during his Iknimaya.
Neteyam will never forget the look on his face at that point. There was so much disappointment and feeling of failure, but that wasn't enough to stop him from making Aonung his.
And that's when reality pulls Neteyam out of his thoughts. Or rather, he pulls himself out of his thoughts, to return to reality, where Aonung has just noticed his lingering golden gaze.
Aonung- What is it, smiley?
Neteyam- Nothing. I've just missed you.
Aonung- Me too.
Aonung leans in to kiss him, and he loves how warm it makes him feel.
His journey down memory lane always ends right before the many years of memories that followed their mating seventeen years ago. As if those years are something he's completely blocked off and has no intention of revisiting, no matter how many good times they hold.
Because they also hold too much pain that he refuses to relive.
Chapter Text
Morning comes all too soon for the exhausted chief, but Aonung knows Neteyam will just let the sun wake him anyway, deciding not to ignore it and his life's duties. He can hear the blue male stirring behind him.
Neteyam leans up with a stretch, then turns to Aonung, who still looks asleep.
Aonung- Morning.
His deep morning voice greets Neteyam but his eyes remain closed. His mate instantly recognizes the behavior, and rubs his head gently.
Neteyam- Head hurting?
Aonung- Mhm.
Neteyam- I'll keep the kids out of the den today then.
After getting a kiss on his head, he opens his eyes and watches Neteyam stand from their bed and check on their son. The boy is still sleeping, so he doesn't bother him, not wanting to make him cry since he hates being woken up before he's ready.
Ninali sleeps in the other section of their den that's separated by an opening with curtains. She claimed it as her own but it's actually there so the children can play in the den even when Neteyam is having a meeting or just needs space.
Sorrow still hits his mate like a brick sometimes, but Neteyam doesn't want the children to see him cry. Aonung knows he doesn't want to ever mention the twins to their current children either, as it would bring up far too many questions that would hurt him to answer.
There isn't another soul alive that he's seen go through as much emotional hurt as his mate, yet still the man remains strong. Fondly, he watches as Neteyam goes to grab some vegetables, thinking of what he'll make for breakfast.
Ninali- Good morning, Sempul!
The small girl runs out from the curtains, giggling in her squeaky voice. She runs up to Neteyam, hugging his legs as tightly as she can, and he rubs her head as a greeting but also shushes her.
Neteyam- Not so loud, Nín, Aonung has a headache.
Ninali- Oops.
Aonung smiles tiredly as she runs over to their hanging bed, trying to reach him. He leans his arm down, which she hugs onto and he pulls her up onto the bed with him.
As if the baby could sense his sister getting more attention than him, Tsaelan wakes and starts crying.
He groans a little because of the unexpected noise, and Neteyam quickly goes to take care of the small boy, getting him cleaned so he can be fed.
Meanwhile, Ninali sits right up against his much larger marine figure as she watches. He lets his eyes close again, blocking out the sunlight that's a bit much for him at the moment, but not falling asleep.
Ninali- Sempu.
Neteyam's ears twitch instinctively, but she's in fact talking to Aonung. She calls Neteyam Sempul, but calls Aonung Sempu, which is a rather cute and affectionate form of the word.
The Sully boy believes she's like that with Aonung because he's likely similar to the father she lost, which he doesn't mind a bit. He finds the dynamic very sweet.
Aonung- Hm?
Ninali- Can we have berries for breakfast instead of vegetables?
Aonung- Ask Neteyam.
Ninali- But he'll say no. You ask him, he won't say no to you.
Neteyam- I can hear you, you little sneak.
He speaks with a light warning in his tone despite smiling strongly but she can't see it. His back is turned to her while he's washing the baby boy in the large bowl that was a gift from one of the warriors when they first arrived with him.
Out on the beach, Rotxo has just returned from a long scouting mission with Lo'Kran.
"Make sure you take a real break this time."
Lo'ak speaks to him within their bonds.
Rotxo- I took a real break last time.
"You hardly sat down. Find something relaxing to do."
Rotxo- I don't want to relax. I need to stay busy.
"If you keep doing this you're gonna forget how to have fun. We don't even go on dates anymore."
Rotxo- Because when I'm on your back, we're needed for a mission.
"But we don't have to be. Neteyam said we didn't have to go out all the time, he knows it's a lot."
Rotxo- A lot that I'm willing to endure.
". . . It wasn't your fault, love. You know that right?"
Rotxo- Of course I know that, I just don't get it.
"Don't get what?"
Rotxo- I'm a hybrid, Lo. Why didn't those creatures come after me?
"Only Eywa knows, but you can't keep dwelling on it. You don't even look like what you are, really. Maybe you don't have much human DNA."
Rotxo- I thought the slightest bit could be detected.
"I don't know, Rotxo. Do we really have to have this conversation? I want you to relax."
He sighs, finally deciding to get off Lo'Kran's back.
Rotxo- Want something to eat?
"I'll hunt for myself this time, thanks. Take it easy while I'm gone."
He hums in response before disconnecting their queues and letting Lo'Kran take off to hunt.
Chapter Text
Rotxo quickly makes his way up into the village, thinking of what he'll do with the rest of his day. The first thing that pops into his mind are his niece and nephew, so he heads for Neteyam and Aonung's den.
There's little joy he finds in anything these days, but Ninali and Tsaelan effortlessly make him smile.
He's glad that Neteyam and Aonung decided to start another family, and can tell how much better they've seemed the past eight months. Their happy little family does make him miss his own sometimes though.
Back when Tsalika was small, and getting spoiled by Lo'ak. Before the boy died and returned as an Ikran. Before his only daughter's life was taken away from her.
He wonders if he would be able to have fun, be happier and better if he were to start another family of his own, but he quickly dismisses the thought. It isn't possible. Not while Lo'ak is an Ikran. He'd be forced to do everything himself.
Plus, he knows how much it hurts to want a hug from someone without being able to receive it. He doesn't want a child to go through that, he aches enough on his own.
Missing his mate's embrace, and seeing his face, holding his hands, feeling his skin, kissing his lips, and spooning as they sleep.
He loves Lo'Kran more than anything, but that doesn't stop him from missing Lo'ak.
The Sully boy that brought him out of his shell, and mated him in secret before it was even allowed. The risk of it all was so enticing to him, especially because it was with Lo'ak.
Suddenly, while so deep in his thoughts, he walks right into someone else who was striding strongly out of an intersecting path. Instantly, he falls to the opposite side, but someone grabs his arm, yanking him back up.
Wift- Sorry. Are you alright?
Rotxo- Uh.
Wift helps Rotxo steady himself with a hand secured around his waist. He's perfectly fine, and glad Wift caught him, but being held quite so closely by someone that isn't family has him a little flustered.
Rotxo- No. Yeah, I mean yeah.
He speaks quickly, his mind malfunctioning a little, so he pulls himself out of Wift's hold. The warrior seems a little amused by his response, meanwhile he clears his throat, stepping back awkwardly.
Wift- You must be tired, you seem a little out of it.
Rotxo- Yeah, probably.
Ninali- Little fish!
The small girl saves him from his embarrassment as she runs along the path, and he catches her as she jumps up at him. They hug tightly, then she plays with his braids, which have gotten pretty long. Not as long as Neteyam's though.
Ninali- Welcome back.
Rotxo- Did you miss me?
Ninali- Mhm!
She nods enthusiastically before hugging him again, and Neteyam finally reaches them as he laughs softly. He has Tsaelan in a snug carrier against his chest.
Wift- Aw, look at you. So damn cute with a baby on you.
He speaks a bit teasingly, despite actually finding the sight very cute, and Neteyam playfully rolls his eyes at him.
Neteyam- I'd like to see one on you.
Wift- You and me both. I thought I was mated to my work, but you're making me jealous, Chief.
Rotxo sets Ninali down and greets Tsaelan. He rubs the boy's cheek softly with a finger, which he grabs onto.
Rotxo- Where are you guys off to?
Ninali- The lake!
She bounces around a bit, slowly wandering farther along the path that leads to the lake. Rotxo stands back and watches her for a moment, amused by her enthusiasm, before he looks back at Neteyam.
Rotxo- Without Aonung?
Neteyam- His head's hurting today, so I'm sparing him from the noise. He's earned a break anyway.
Rotxo- Maybe I'll go bother him a little then.
Neteyam- (chuckles) Not too much, please.
Rotxo- No promises.
He walks off, heading towards the head family's den while the others resume what they were doing. He isn't actually planning to bother Aonung too much, just a little, since he knows his head is in a lot of pain.
The curtains are closed when Rotxo walks up to the den, and he invites himself in. Aonung is sitting up in the bed, still eating some of what Neteyam made for breakfast.
Aonung- Welcome back. How was scouting?
Rotxo- Clear on the way back, for once.
Aonung- You look tired.
He walks over to the bed, hopping on the side of it towards the end, letting his legs hang off.
Rotxo- So I've been told.
Aonung frowns at him when he rolls his eyes, knowing he's trying to run himself ragged.
Aonung- Has Lo'Kran not scolded you?
Rotxo- By squawking, or trying to bite my head off?
He responds as if he isn't able to talk to Lo'ak within the Ikran he's become, which speaks volumes to Aonung.
Aonung- You're not slowing down. You've been okay so far, but at some point you're gonna hurt yourself.
Rotxo- I'm fine, Ao, relax.
Aonung- I am relaxing, it's you that needs to.
Rotxo groans, falling backward exaggeratedly, and laying across the bottom of the bed.
Rotxo- There, I'm relaxing. Happy now?
Aonung- Yes.
Aonung chuckles softly as the smaller male huffs in annoyance and pulls his legs up onto the bed as he curls up on his side with his back facing him. Not much longer later and Rotxo is fast asleep, as Aonung figured he would be.
He's glad, since that means he can resume resting as well, finished with his food. He wasn't planning to sleep, and just wanted to think. Not too deeply, but just about how content their lives seem.
Every time there's an attack, it's far from their village, and Neteyam and the others have to venture out to go save them before returning to the safety they've created. Don't get him wrong, he's beyond happy that they're so lucky, but he can't help but feel bad for the people who have lost their homes and don't have the luxury of just relaxing comfortably in bed as they do.
Okay, so maybe he is thinking deeply, but it wasn't his intention at first. He wonders if others in the village feel the same way; Like they're a little wrong for being so unscathed. If that were the case, he'd certainly want to lighten their spirits.
Then an idea comes to him.
They've yet to entertain their people properly, letting warriors and the like loosen up and feel rewarded for surviving as well as saving others; A feast, with music. He'll definitely have to discuss that with Neteyam.
Feeling satisfied with his thinking session, which kept his mind off the pain lingering in his bond, he lets himself fall asleep, escaping the pain altogether.
Chapter Text
Aonung is abruptly startled awake by Ninali hopping into the den, speaking loudly in excitement. With a soft groan he sits up to view his family coming in, surprised they're back so soon, and loudly at that.
Ninali- Sempu! You'll never believe what happened! It was so cool!
Neteyam- It was not cool, Ninali, it was dangerous.
He's instantly concerned for his mate when Neteyam raises his voice a bit, speaking sternly. Ninali's ears droop a little, since her excitement was just scolded, and Neteyam gets Tsaelan out of the carrier to lie him in his basket.
Aonung can see his hands trembling, and his breaths are a bit heavy. He stands up, recognizing the behavior, and Neteyam turns to him with worry and anger all over his face as he starts explaining in a raised voice as he gestures to the small girl.
Neteyam- A yerik could have trampled her, Aonung! It was this close! There was nothing cool about it!
Aonung- Okay, okay, but she's fine.
He grabs Neteyam's hands gently, stopping him from accidentally directing anything at Ninali, then he turns to look down at her while Neteyam exhales sharply.
Ninali- Am I in trouble?
Aonung- No, of course not. Why don't you go wait for me in your room, I'll be there in a minute.
She nods, and aims a timid look at Neteyam before rushing off behind the curtains. Aonung sighs as he turns back to his mate, deciding to now rub the backs of his trembling hands smoothly.
Neteyam is struggling to really calm down, his breaths still quick and heavy as his mind keeps replaying the moment he thought his daughter would be trampled.
In truth, the deer was well aware she was there, which was obvious since it leaped, jumping and landing at a decent distance.
Aonung- It's alright, Tey. She's safe. She's not hurt.
His soothing rubs move from Neteyam's hands, to his forearms, to his biceps, his shoulders, his neck, then his face. Moving slowly as he holds his gaze, which ends up helping his breathing slow down to the pace it should be.
Neteyam visibly relaxes with Aonung's hands cradling his face, and he holds onto them, not wanting them to move.
Aonung- Better?
Neteyam- Mhm.
Aonung- Now, what happened?
Neteyam- I was in the lake with Tsaelan while Ninali was exploring nearby. Then a stray yerik showed up. It was probably amazing to see it jump from where she was, but I just . . . I panicked.
His voice has turned into a whisper, already feeling guilt eat at him for the way he reacted to Ninali who was just excited. Aonung presses a comforting kiss on his head before pressing their foreheads together and Neteyam closes his eyes.
Aonung- It's okay.
Neteyam- She thinks she's in trouble.
Aonung- You couldn't help it, alright?
Neteyam- I'm gonna mess up our kids, Aonung.
Aonung- Hey.
Neteyam opens his eyes to look at him.
Aonung- The kids will be fine, and so will you. They'll both understand at some point.
Neteyam- I don't want them to have to understand. I don't want them having to tiptoe around me like I'm fragile. I'm supposed to be the protector.
Aonung- And you are, but nobody's perfect. I taught you that a long time ago.
He speaks sternly, but there's a certain softness in his eyes that eases Neteyam, keeping him from panicking about something else. The Sully boy nods softly against Aonung, who grants him a short kiss.
Aonung- Wait here.
Neteyam sighs as he stands next to the bed, only noticing Rotxo's snores once Aonung has left. He's surprised to see him actually resting like he said he would and not out doing anything else. He's also surprised he fell asleep in their bed, he's never done that before.
Chapter Text
In the other room, Aonung sits next to Ninali, who was waiting on her bed which is really just a bunch of blankets and other soft things on the floor that she sleeps on; a little nest.
She looks weary as she gazes up at him, and he rubs her head softly to comfort her.
Aonung- So you saw something pretty cool earlier.
Her face lights up a bit and she nods eagerly.
Ninali- A yerik jumped right over me. It looked like it was flying.
Her expression suddenly falters and she frowns a bit.
Ninali- I don't think Sempul liked it though.
Aonung- No, he did, it's just . . . Well, he was worried for you.
Ninali- Worried of what?
Aonung- That it would step on you.
Ninali- Oh. But I didn't get stepped on . . . and he still yelled at me.
She looks down to the floor. Neteyam has never raised his voice at her since she got there, always remaining calm even when she does need a little scolding.
Aonung sighs softly before picking her up into his lap, and she lies her head on his chest.
Aonung- I know. He didn't mean to yell at you, but he was scared.
Ninali- Scared? Of the yerik?
Aonung- No, of seeing you get hurt.
Ninali- But I didn't get hurt.
She lifts her head up to look at him as she reassures that she's not harmed.
Aonung- I know. But, you know how you cry at night sometimes because you fear something might happen to us while everyone's asleep?
Her village was destroyed in the middle of eclipse, waking her from a blissful dream with destruction. It makes her paranoid at night, and occasionally she cries because of it. She used to cry every night when she first got there, until she started feeling safer.
Ninali- Yeah.
Aonung- He's experienced some bad things too, and thinking of it happening again scares him, then he gets like that.
Ninali- Did a yerik step on someone close to him?
Aonung- No, but he's seen people close to him get hurt, and he doesn't want that to happen to you.
Her ears perk up as she hums at him, seeming to understand better.
Ninali- I see.
Aonung- Just try to bare with him when he's like that. Telling him you're okay and unharmed might help.
Ninali- And giving him a hug?
Aonung- Yes, that would definitely work. You should give him one now, to make him feel better.
Ninali- Okay!
With her usual smile back on her face, she hops up and runs into the other room, and Aonung follows.
When Neteyam sees Ninali running over to him with her arms out, he kneels down to catch her tight hug. Aonung comes out and watches them, feeling proud of Ninali.
Neteyam- Sorry for yelling at you.
Ninali- It's okay, Sempul. I promise not to get hurt and scare you.
Neteyam glances up at Aonung's proud face, and chuckles softly at her bold promise.
Neteyam- Thank you.
Ninali- Do you feel better?
Neteyam- Yes, my flower.
Ninali- Yay!
She squeezes him, making her parents laugh fondly, then Rotxo's snores reach their ears again. Ninali pulls back and looks over to the bed, giggling at the noise.
Ninali- Why is little fish in your bed?
Aonung- He was tired.
Neteyam- Now that I think of it, I haven't seen Lo'Kran.
Aonung- Nín, let us talk for a bit.
She nods and goes to craft something in the other room while Neteyam stands, observing Aonung's concerned face.
Neteyam- What is it?
Aonung- You know, I think sometimes his mate being an Ikran and not a person kinda gets to him.
Aonung speaks quietly, to not wake Rotxo and have him overhear.
Neteyam- He loves Lo'ak either way though.
Aonung- Yes, but think about it. We can hold each other, and talk openly, kiss, and I can make all the love to you I want, but . . . he doesn't get any of that anymore.
Neteyam frowns a bit, since he hadn't really thought about that before. When they choose someone to mate, it's their heart and personality that draws them in the most, more so than anything that ties to the physical side of things.
But that's only because he naturally took that for granted.
If he suddenly wasn't able to feel Aonung's arms around him, or his comforting hands holding his face, that would bother him too. But what could they possibly do for Rotxo? He's already mated to Lo'ak, and it isn't like he can just leave him for someone else.
Neteyam knows he wouldn't want to either, since he truly loves Lo'ak.
Neteyam- So, what do we do?
Aonung- I'll talk to Lo'Kran about it.
Neteyam- What is he supposed to do about that? No. It'll only make him feel bad.
Aonung- But-
Neteyam- No, Aonung. I'm sorry for Rotxo, really, but I'm not about to have my brother feeling bad for letting down his mate when it's out of his control.
Aonung- But we can't just-
The smaller marine male groans softly as he wakes, making them halt their conversation.
With a tired look he sits up, realizing he fell asleep, then he turns around, seeing Neteyam and Aonung.
Rotxo- Shit.
Immediately, he moves to get out of their bed, scrambling to his feet and wiping the sleep from his face.
Rotxo- Sorry, I didn't-
Neteyam- It's fine. You're practically Aonung's brother after all.
Aonung- Sleep well?
Rotxo- Um, I think so. I feel rested.
Aonung- Good, I need to lie down.
Aonung goes over to their bed and lies in the middle of it in no particular way. He sighs heavily in relief, since laying down helped his head.
Neteyam had forgotten it was even hurting, since he was up and handling everything as if he wasn't in any pain at all.
Neteyam- Sorry, Ao. I'll make your favorite meal for dinner this evening.
Aonung- Mm, can I get a massage too?
Neteyam- (chuckles) Of course.
Tsaelan suddenly starts crying, which lets Neteyam know it's just past noon, and he needs to be fed again.
Neteyam- I'll also give you some silence. Rotxo, after I feed him, could you-
Rotxo- I'll do it.
Rotxo goes over to the basket while Neteyam goes to retrieve Ninali. Once he gets the crying boy in his arms, Neteyam returns with Ninali in tow and grabs his food, handing it to Rotxo.
Rotxo- I'll bring them back for dinner.
Neteyam- Thank you.
The smaller male hums in response before leaving while Ninali tells him about the creature they encountered on their visit to the lake.
Chapter Text
At the peak of noon, Neteyam stands on the beach with his arms crossed, his second in command standing at a short distance behind him. The Tsahík is next to him, watching as his brother returns on his Skimwing, followed by three young recruits he got on his visit to Awa'atlu.
The younger ones are most often more adaptable, plus their lack of experience makes them very eager and willing to follow orders. Unless, of course, they're just defiant and difficult by nature.
Wari leads two boys and a girl up onto shore, they all look around his age. In the lead, he gives his respectful gesture before Aonung brings him into a short hug.
During the short exchange, Neteyam notices the very large boy looking at him excitedly, his tail swaying effortlessly. Wari pulls back from his brother and gestures to each of their new warriors as he introduces them.
Wari- This is Ketan, she's nineteen, and highly praised by her trainer.
She gestures respectfully, looking through the bangs of her unbraided curls.
Wari- This is her brother, Ka'oti, twenty, and equally as skilled as her.
Ka'oti does the same gesture, a bit lazily, but Neteyam suspects it's just because he's tired.
Wari- And this giant is Zafunaki, he's-
Zafunaki- Nineteen, top warrior in my group, and feel free to call me Zafu, Chief.
Eagerly, he offers his respectful gesture before smiling widely at Neteyam, who has to look up at him.
Wari- Heads up, he's a fan.
Aonung- Oh brother.
Aonung's ears pin back in annoyance as he watches the boy making doe eyes at his mate. Wift snickers behind them.
Neteyam- Right, well, we'll see who's really the best once I'm through with you.
Zafunaki- Of course, sir. Ready when you are.
Neteyam- Not tired?
Zafunaki- Not at all, sir.
Ka'oti- Is he serious?
Ketan- Suck up.
Neteyam- Rest for today. At first light I want you all to meet me in the arena.
Ketan- Arena?
Neteyam- Wift will show you where. He'll also show you to suitable dens. Welcome to Zusawkrr.
Wift gestures for them to follow him, and leads them up the ladders and into the village. Each of them takes in the sight of the unusual village.
Wift- We'll be having a feast in a few days, so you three joined at a good time.
Ka'oti- I don't see many people.
Wift- That's because there aren't many here. Twenty-four I believe, now that you guys are here. Oh, and Lo'Kran makes twenty-five.
Ketan- Wow, you know the exact number.
Wift- Families, names, ages, and homes. It's my job really. Even if there were hundreds to keep track of.
Zafunaki- So you're the Chief's right hand.
Wift- Mhm.
Zafunaki- What's he like?
Wift- Scary, so don't test him.
Ka'oti- Psh. The Tsahík looks scarier than him.
Wift- Yet Neteyam is the one who's actually a warrior. Looks can be deceiving, you know.
Ketan- Is there anyone else here that's our age? Other than that asshole that led us here.
Wift- (chuckles) Wari is the Tsahík's brother, so you might want to mind what you say about him.
Her mouth shuts instantly, making her brother laugh at the slight fear on her face. It amuses Wift as well.
Wift- This village is very tightknit. More so than one average sized, so I encourage you to try to get along as best you can with people.
He turns to them, earning nods, and soon they reach two empty dens built next to each other.
Wift- Here are your new homes. I know you must be tired, so I'll give you some time to rest before your tour. If you need anything, my den is that way. Or just ask anyone where you can find me.
Ketan- Okay. It's Wift, right?
Wift- That's me. I'll catch you guys later.
They each watch the man walk off before going into their dens. Before Ketan steps in after her brother, though, she spots two of the Setkalina residents. Having never seen Na'vi like that before, she accidentally stares.
Ka'oti- Ket, what are you looking at?
He steps back out of the den, and the large greenish boy walking along the paths followed by a similar looking girl also catches his attention until they're out of sight.
Ka'oti- What kind of Na'vi was that?
Ketan- I don't know.
Zafunaki- Setkalina.
Their heads turn to where Zafunaki is peeking out of his den, and they give him an odd look.
Zafunaki- What? My parents told me about them.
Ketan- Did they also tell you about our new chief? Filling your head with heroic stories.
Zafunaki- Yes, actually. Neteyam Sully is an actual hero.
Ka'oti- Doesn't mean you have to fanboy over him.
Ketan- Yeah, nobody likes a teacher's pet.
Zafunaki- Except for the teacher.
He retreats to his den after leaving them with that casually spoken comment. They retreat into their den as well, to relax after their long trip.
Chapter Text
After leaving the newcomers, Wift heads to Rotxo's den to see how he's doing with the Sully kids. He greets Queto and Maiyu as they pass him by with their youngest son, Eyto, running around.
Eyto's the only kid his age, and his parents or older siblings are the ones that have to keep him entertained.
As he walks up to Rotxo's den, he looks in, since the curtains are up, and sees Rotxo preparing something at the pit. Ninali is asleep in a spot next to her baby brother.
They always seem calm when they're with him, which is impressive to Wift. The smaller male seems to have a way with kids.
Rotxo- Did Neteyam send you?
Rotxo's gaze travels over to him, since he was lingering there. Checking in on him when he has the small ones is a task Neteyam expects him to do without having to be told at this point, so he does.
Wift- Yeah.
Rotxo- He says he trusts me with the kids but he sure doesn't act like it sometimes.
Rotxo refocuses on the food he's roasting, looking a little offended.
Wift- I think it's actually you I'm checking in on.
Rotxo- Oh.
Their eyes meet again as he leans against the archway.
Rotxo- Well, I'm fine.
He hums, but still remains there.
Wift- I bet you say that even when you aren't.
Rotxo- What makes you think that?
Wift- I've seen you do it.
Rotxo- Have you now?
Wift- And you get away with it because Lo'Kran can't really tell on you.
Rotxo pauses, then looks up at him with annoyance on his face.
Rotxo- Is there a point to this?
Wift- I'm supposed to be checking on you, so I figured I'd let you know I can tell when you're lying.
Rotxo- And how can you tell that?
Wift- My whole job is to be perceptive, and I'm really good at it.
Rotxo- Learn to get really good at being able to tell when you're prying then.
Wift- Oh I know I am. Aonung told me to.
Rotxo- What does he want me to do? Tell you I'm not fine?
Wift- Maybe.
Rotxo- It would be lying.
Wift- Would it though?
Rotxo squints at him before standing and strolling up to him casually. He stands off the archway, looking down at the glare on Rotxo's face.
Rotxo- You have five seconds to walk away before I start trying to stab you.
Wift- You'd do that to your chief's right hand?
Rotxo- Or I could just tell Lo'Kran you've been bothering me. He's been waiting for an excuse to scare someone in their sleep.
Wift- Jokes on you, I barely sleep.
Rotxo- He wouldn't mind crashing your daydreams too.
Wift- Don't get much time for that either.
Rotxo- Get the fuck away from my den.
Wift laughs a bit, keeping his casual demeanor while Rotxo gets more angered by the second.
Wift- Relax. They said if I could rile you up then you're fine.
Rotxo- What?
Wift- Aonung tipped me off on how to really tell.
Rotxo- . . . You can't actually even tell when I'm lying can you?
Wift- Not really, unless it's obvious, since I don't know you personally.
Rotxo sighs heavily, now wishing he could chase Aonung with his blade. He knew he didn't remember Wift being quite so annoying, despite never interacting much.
Wift- Your food's burning.
Rotxo- Shit!
He rushes back over to the pit, unable to save the burned crustaceans he made for him and Ninali. Just as he's about to dispose of them, Tsaelan wakes, beginning to cry. He was trying to get their food done before that.
Feeling a little guilty for distracting him, Wift walks in, going over to the little basket of fish.
Rotxo- What are you-
Wift- To make up for this, I'll cook. You just focus on the little guy.
Rotxo- Thanks.
Now that is how he remembers Wift. Effortlessly helpful, which is why he's so good at what he does. While he cares for Tsaelan, Ninali wakes and starts talking to Wift while he cooks.
The busy man doesn't stay to enjoy the food, however, since he has other things to handle. Specifically speaking, Lu'sevin shows up talking about her brother, who got his leg stuck in a tree after slipping.
After getting the boy free, Wift helps him walk since he has a cut along his leg, and Lu'sevin trails behind them.
Wift- You're a fish, Xon, stop trying to climb trees.
Xon- Chief says if I can't climb then I can't be on his squad.
Wift- So you'll tear yourself apart trying to do something you can't? Climbing isn't for everyone, and aren't you supposed to be a hunter?
Xon- But-
Wift- I get that you want to help, and I'm glad, but you're needed here anyway. If everyone leaves to help others, who's gonna defend us?
Xon- . . . So, no more climbing trees?
Wift- No more climbing trees.
Xon- Fine.
Lu'sevin- Thank Eywa it'll end.
Wift takes them to the infirmary. Aonung didn't want to be patching up bloody bodies in his own home, so of course an infirmary was made.
Luckily, the Tsahík is in, and the moment he sees Xon he already knows what happened. Aonung almost rolls his eyes, but refrains, settling for an annoyed expression instead.
Aonung- Again?
Wift- He agreed to stop after this.
Aonung- Come on then.
Wift helps the boy sit and Aonung grabs the bucket of fresh water and starts cleaning the wound before working to mend it. He isn't gentle at all, so Xon hisses in pain quite a bit while he's tended to, but every wound Aonung patches up heals faster than expected, so no one complains.
Which is one of the many things Wift explains while giving a tour to their three new residents later, around evening. He also shows them the arena. It took months to build, but it is the largest woven floor in the village, but also the sturdiest place.
The floor doesn't bend when walked on, half because of the tight woven layers and half because of the wood supporting it underneath. There are many branches and other foliage that hang over it in the massive trees, which keeps it mostly hidden from the skies above.
