Summary

There hadn't been an emperor in their lands since the ages of old, long before the cultivation world had become the cultivation world but he intended to be the first. By the time Wangji had been born, the threat of war had been looming over the sects for years. Still, nearly four decades had passed since then with little more than veiled threats and small squabbles. Until now.
A few months ago, Wen Ruohan had named himself Chief Cultivator, it was as good as a declaration of war.

The Cultivation World was no stranger to gossip.
From the minor clans to the major clans, there was an implicit belief that they were superior to ordinary people, even those who ran the country from the Imperial City; some cultivators could attain immortality and become gods; they could fly on swords, subdue living creatures with music, and survive for long periods without food through meditation.
But they were still human. And it was human nature to prosper by meddling in other people’s affairs.
This gossip in particular had the potential to spread and ignite like a broken lantern thrown into a pool of oil: the lucky ones had witnessed the highlights live, the others would complain for a long time that they had missed such a spectacle.

Wen RuoHan raised an eyebrow. Wei Ying had approached him while he was instructing Wen Xu on administrative matters. “What do you want?” he asked bluntly. Though his tone was dry, it wasn’t hostile. In fact, he seemed amused. He probably enjoyed indulging his grandson more than anyone could imagine.
Wei Ying smiled and pulled out letters bearing the Lan seal—the same invitations that had arrived at the Sun Palace every year for over a decade, only to be fed to the goats.
