The first time it happens, they’re in Wakanda.
“You're bored,” Bucky murmurs, low. Hears how gravelly it comes out, exactly the smoke-filled tone he used to use to achieve a very particular purpose. “Wanna do something dumb?”
“Like what?” Sam asks, flat. Bucky grins, just a little, sharp.
“I can think of a few things,” he says, and steps closer, watches how Sam doesn't step away. They're in each other's space, and Bucky knows goddamn better than this, knows he put himself away in Bucharest for a reason, but fuck, he's tired and he's pissed off and he's reckless, and so is Sam, energy bouncing between them. “For instance,” Bucky says, waits a beat. “I'm pretty dumb,” and hears Sam's breathing speed up.

Sam blinks.
“Yeah, so, he’s been injected with truth serum.”

It’s been seventy years since Bucky took an omega out and he has no idea how to apply modern dating standards to his life. Being in Wakanda has not helped, due to the whole “entirely different culture” thing. Being several thousand miles away from the omega he wants to take out has helped even less.
“You look good, Buck,” Steve says from the tablet screen, and Bucky pretends not to be creeping on the little glimpse of Sam Wilson standing off to the side that he can see. Sam’s talking to Wanda about something. He’s not paying any attention to Steve--or, by extension, him. He looks damn good in those jeans.
“I feel alright,” he says, like an entirely normal alpha who is entirely focused on this conversation.

“Can’t sleep properly alone in the house?” Albert asks, sympathetic, and Bucky knew he was tired, but he wonders if it’s even worse than he thought before Albert can see it. He always figured the serum did a pretty good job of hiding the usual evidence — bloodshot eyes and dark bags a rarity for Bucky.
“A bit,” Bucky admits, doesn’t say that he hasn’t slept a full night through without Sam in the next room. That when he has slept, his dreams have been nightmares. That he’s counting the nights until Sam is back. Only two to go. Maybe Bucky will come back here and pick up some beignets before driving to the airport to fetch him. Sam will complain about getting the sugar all over his truck, but he’ll gladly eat them anyway.
Albert nods like this makes sense. “I can never sleep right when my missus is away, either.”
It seems like everyone around town has gotten the wrong idea about Sam and Bucky's relationship. Sam thinks maybe their use of the term partner is the cause. Bucky might not be so sure about that.
