I, um, I didn’t go anywhere, San Lang. I’m right where I was before. I just – I rubbed the bottle with my sleeve, and it, uh…
Hua Cheng raised his brows. The bottle? Sure enough, when he followed the red string back outside, it led him right back to the pile of scraps, disappearing into the narrow neck of the bottle, which was lying abandoned on the grass.
He carefully picked it up and peered inside. There at the bottom was Xie Lian, looking up at him with a mix of resignation and embarrassment on his face.
And oh, what a small face. Hua Cheng shook himself. This wasn’t the time to get distracted by how cute his tiny gege was.
“I found you,” he said softly, curling both hands protectively around the bottle.

Xie Lian nodded. “Yes. You’ll have to come back to get your book.”
Hua Cheng nodded, too. “I hope I don’t forget it again. Then I’d have to come back a fourth time.”
“Maybe a fifth, if you forget again,” Xie Lian whispered.
Hua Cheng stepped even closer. “Or a sixth,” he said, hand turning to brush his fingers along Xie Lian’s. His fingers slotted gently between them, dipping in and out, tracing over his palm. “Or a seventh, or eighth.”

Summary
"I can't share a fur with someone who isn't my mate, Xie Lian," he said quietly. Xie Lian stared at him. They had slept next to each other a hundred times as children. Sleeping like that had always felt natural and safe. Why did it have to change now? Xie Lian looked at Hua Cheng's face; how angular and severe it had gotten. How strong his jawline was now. His handsomeness was like a punch in the gut. Hua Cheng's gaze was serious. Xie Lian felt his face heat up for some reason and sat up quickly. He was suddenly aware of his shirtlessness, the nakedness of his skin. He had never been aware of his body around Hua Cheng before. What was he doing? Why was he half-naked in bed with another man?! Hua Cheng was right. It wasn't the same anymore. Xie Lian's face was beaming now; he covered it with his hands, his back sweating. He couldn't understand what was going on. He heard the floorboards creak as the other man sat up. He felt the heat radiating off Hua Cheng's body on his bare back. The air between them was very still, very quiet. Too warm. Xie Lian pushed his hair out of his flustered face and cleared his throat delicately.
"San Lang is right, I'm sorry," he mumbled and got up quickly, leaving the room.

Summary
"Mu Qing!" came Dianxia's sweet-sounding voice. "Where are you?" Hua Cheng's pulse sped up. His entire body was screaming for him to bolt down the stairs, flee as fast as he could. He could not be perceived. He would die if he were to be perceived. The soft steps, naked feet on tiles, came closer. Hua Cheng's ears were filled with rushing, his skin prickled all over. It was like tiny hands had grabbed his windpipe and were yanking it up and down. And then the prince came into view, wrapped in a bathrobe. His hair was out of its royal braid, hanging in loose black strands, stark against the white linen. He had the complexion of someone who had just walked out of a steam room, his cheeks and nose pink.
"Mu Qing, I want-" Dianxia said and turned his head, looking up at Hua Cheng and pausing.
Just like that, all the anxiety and fear drained out of Hua Cheng's body.
He could not recall why he had been so terrified. He felt good. Safe. Dianxia smiled and his cheeks dimpled. His smile was so wide it pushed into his eyes, almost making them squint. Hua Cheng realized nobody had ever looked at him like this.
"I know you!" Dianxia said. "You won't run again, will you?"
