    part of that is just the narrative structure, I guess? like...you need the overview at the beginning. but part of it is to imply that Xichen's memory of the experiences is colored by the circumstances around him. his emotional life is richer at the end of the story, and bleaker at the beginning.

    I didn't make a big thing about it but xichen is always very careful of wangji's touch issues. the only time he's NOT careful is when he hugs wangji after he apologizes for not writing. otherwise, he lets wangji signal.
