Summary
Later in life, when asked to describe their first meeting as children, Wen Kexing would coyly cover his mouth with his fan and spout poetry about red strings or peerless blooms, carriage awnings and magpie bridges. Zhou Zishu would chuckle and grow quiet. To be honest, he couldn’t quite describe it. The sun-drenched morning he could vaguely still recall, along with the hours he’d spent trudging through the dewy forest hunting for herbs. The puppy in his arms, its wet-fur smell almost but not entirely unpleasant. The last thing Zishu remembered clearly was walking into a shuttered room with his shifu, a woman, and the boy who would become the centre of his life.

Summary
Numb, Zhou Zishu felt like he was sleepwalking as Crown Prince Helian Yi waved him into his private study, stifling yawns. “Zishu, what is it? It’s late.” The Prince was hastily dressed, his rumpled collar pressed unevenly against his throat—he’d likely been asleep when Zishu had asked for an audience.
“It’s… It’s Kexing. My shidi,” Zishu said. “He… he…”
Zishu swayed, rubbing his temple. Alarmed, the Crown Prince grabbed Zishu by the elbow and hauled him to the closest seat. “What happened? Your shidi—dead?”
“Better that he be dead!”
