Summary
Finally, finally the coughing subsides, and a blossoming flower comes tumbling from his bloody lips. It lands on the floor in front of him. It’s a green stem with several small, yellow blooms on it, the yellow of the flowers speckled with shiny, wet, red spots. It’s not a plant Ryuji recognizes. He wouldn’t care, even if it was. It just makes him mad, in a pathetic sort of way. This is the plant that’s been causing him so much grief? It’s not even all that pretty.
---
Ryuji is coughing up flower petals. It is certainly NOT hanahaki disease and it is DEFINITELY not for Akira. Nope. No way.Series

Still, it’s hard to sit with these feelings bouncing around inside him - they feel enormous, like he can’t keep them contained. He’s just one teenager, how is he supposed to hold feelings this huge?

Summary
Mrs. Sakamoto gives a huge, bright smile. It’s the same smile Ryuji gives, like someone copied the warm, sunny look from her face and pasted it onto Ryuji’s. She wraps Akira in a mighty hug, before stepping back a pace and surveying him.
“It’s so nice to finally meet you."

Summary
Ryuji could make a list a mile long of things he admires about Akira, and ‘pretty’ would be the least important, least impressive thing on that list. But right now, bathed in the gold light of the evening, Ryuji thinks Akira looks downright beautiful. Angelic, maybe, if Ryuji had the wits to string together a thought that poetic. He doesn’t have the wits, though. He just gets caught up in how this moment - here with Akira, in the warm glow of sunset, the tide at their feet - makes him feel.
It makes him feel free.

Summary
He drops his school bag on the floor and stuffs his hands in his pockets. “I… I dunno, man.” He wishes he was better at saying how he feels. Sometimes, especially when it comes to Akira, it seems like his feelings are too big and too complex for him to put into words. “I knew you’d be okay, but it’s hard not to worry, anyway.”
Yeah, that’s not even scratching the surface of how he feels.
---

Summary
“I don’t want to be the angry guy who hits shit. I already know I’m the tough guy who wacks things, and I’m short-tempered, too. It… it doesn’t seem like a real big jump from ‘angry and hits things’ to ‘hits things when he’s angry,’ you know?”
Akira’s not sure where this is coming from. Has someone said something to make Ryuji feel this way? He’s about to ask what brought this on, but Ryuji starts to speak again before he can.
“My dad was like that. I never wanna be like him.”
---
Ryuji worries he's too much like his father. He confides in Akira about this fear.Series
